This depends, of course, on the sensitivity of the data. Dropbox isn't
secure enough for just about anything. SpiderOak seems to take an
approach---if you read their corporate descriptions---in which they
have no access whatsoever to your data. In this sense, everything is
being scrambled since the moment it leaves your computer and you're
the only one holding the key to decrypt the data. The obverse is also
true: lose your password, and you lose access to your data
permanently. This said, I understand your concerns.

I do not trust patient related data or important data onto a server
I do not have control over.

My MacMinis at the practice and at home each have Time Machine
running and talk to each other with Unison.

My MacBookAir talks to the one at home with Unison, anytime I open
or close it, and before and after I travel with it I run Time
Machine on the little HD I take with.

For automatic (and very frequent) backups I use SpiderOak, although
many people are happy with Dropbox. The diff is automatically backed

Hi el,

Thanks for your advice. I will definitely need to use some sort of backup
for my coming thesis.

I do all important stuff with Version Control, synchronize with Unison
to at least two other machines, and all have Time Machine running, the
Airbook however not as frequently as the other two.

Similar mechanisms exist for Windoze and Linux.

If the problem repeats itself please warn us. We take the file format
integrity seriously.

As Richard said this is quite unusual and so the suspect is a corruption
by other methods. Regardless I will take your file to dissect it in
order to find the real culprit.

The file is corrupted. Possibly some disk problem, or who knows. That's
the only cause of this. Try opening it in notepad or something of the
sort. That ought to allow you to copy and paste a lot of the text.

more familiar with the file format will chip in.

Re: LyX: Document Format Failure

2011-09-17 Thread VNK
Hi Liviu,

I have no idea why there is a missing \end_layout. I have never edited the
source of the lyx file before, how can that line be missing?
This afternoon I managed to open the lyx file in my way (described in the
previous messages) and re-composed the report. Really time consuming and
frustrated, but it's done by now.
I do not dare to try the solution you provided. Anyway, thanks for your
help.

Best regards,
VNK

They're not needed to check how it opens in LyX. This is what I get
when opening from a terminal on Linux:

liv@liv-laptop:/tmp$ lyx-svn Lab1.lyx
Paragraph ended in line 5187
Missing \end_layout.
Paragraph ended in line 5306
Missing \end_layout.
Error: Document format failure

/tmp/Lab1.lyx ended unexpectedly, which means that it is probably corrupted.

I'm no expert in the LyX file format so couldn't help you further. Regards

Re: LyX: Document Format Failure

2011-09-17 Thread VNK
Hi,

Sorry, that's my fault. It's LyX-2.0.0-3-Installer.exe
Please take a look at the file http://imghost.ucoz.org/upload2/Lab1.rar
Right now I cannot upload the inserted images because the wifi signal is
very weak.

I suspect the problem is related to the inserted figures because when I open
the lyx file with notepad++ and delete most of the sections containing
figures, I can open it without error.

Best regards,
VNK

I suppose you come from the future, since the last LyX stable is
2.0.1. Nevertheless, if your document is not confidential it might
help if you posted it somewhere so that we could try to open it on our
