iPlayer Automator works on Lion!

2011-09-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello,
I have been playing with the free app "Get iPlayer Automator" on Lion 10.7.1
and have successfully downloaded and played both radio and TV content from the
BBC. Google "iPlayer Automator" to download it.

There is very little documentation but the following works

First you must change the default preferences. Under General Preferences set
Proxy to None and choose a download path rather than use the default path. YOu
might also want to change the types of content which can be downloaded by
checking the desired boxes for example to add BBC Radio.

Now type a program name into the search string. I tried it with "Horizon" (TV)
which resulted in several episodes of Horizon being displayed in the search
results. I chose one of these and then pressed the "Add to queue" button. I
also tried "Today" (Radio) with similar results.

next go to the Toolbar and press the "Start" button. The requested episode of
Horizon and Today will start downloading into the folder you specified when you
chose the download path.

YOu can then locate the desired episode and press Command+DownArrow to open it
and presto the episode starts playing!

I have only spent a couple of hours on this and there are several other options
to be explored. It is all accessible. The provided proxy probably allows users
outside the UK to download content. Other options suggest you can add a program
you have located via Safari (for example a program with Audio Description) to
the download queue. Other options suggest you can arrange to automatically
download episodes of your favourite programs as they become available. Note
that I have not tried any of these which might or might not do what their
titles imply.

Have fun and keep us posted on anything you learn

You get the same number of channels. 127.
There are some that you don't get like live sports.

I also will put my vote in for Music Doc.

Re: Apple TV Second Generation [USB-Micro Interface]

2011-09-09 Thread Kevin Chao
Micro USB slot on Apple TV 2 is not meant to be used by users, but by
technicians or developers. It can be used to obtain device logs,
install betas, and a few other things (none of which most users will
ever do).

Re: Dropbox App

2011-09-09 Thread Kevin Chao
Yes, back a few weeks ago, Dropbox made an update available that works
with OS X Lion. Please obtain it from http://Dropbox.com

It adds:
* Dropbox shortcut menus (available when right clicking or VO-SHIFT-M
on folders/files in Dropbox)
* Voiceover speaks folder/file changes, IE: if a file was added, EG:
test.rtf was added.

If you need to work with text documents, .txt, no more, and or less;
Plain Text is a wonderful, intuitive, simple, and great app that has
Dropbox integration. There's an aad-supported and paid version of this

I don't know about Lion specifically, but there are a number of other
pdf readers.

softcon pdf viewer (http://mac.softcon.com/softconpdfviewer.dmg)
This was written for tiger, because the tiger pdf viewer couldn't do
a continuous page view, I.E. tell vo to read continuously, and have
it do so w/o having to change pages at the end of each one, so the
softcon pdf viewer was released to allow this capability. However,
it hasn't been updated since, so no clue if it will work on lion or not.

Skim (http://skim-app.sourceforge.net/)
It not only works on later versions of osx (including leopard), but
is fully vo accessible. It also comes with source (if you so desire)
so that you can see how it works, and change it if you see fit).

Adobe reader can be had at: http://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/

I've not used it, but I hear it's not as accessible as preview, but
supposedly handles pdfs preview doesn't, though I've never run across
a pdf preview didn't handle that wasn't an image of real pages, so in
my personal opinion, this one isn't necessary, but there it is for
those who want to try it.

Pdf clerk is in the app store, you can find a version for download
at: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27168/pdfclerk-pro

You can hit the developer's site at: http://sintraworks.com/
I have no idea if this app is accessible or not, so someone else will
need to try this one.
Then there's pdfpen which has both a regular and a pro version. It
can edit pdf files as well as read them. It's not very accessible,
but your mileage may vary.
You can find a version of pdfpen at: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/
13829/pdfpen

There's more, but some are pre tiger, and others are definitely not
accessible, but if you really need them, a quick search on google
should turn up a few more with minimal effort.

Hi Christine,

I'm not an expert on Networking, it's something i need to get a handle on, but
have you checked the Trash on both machines. I could be wrong, but I think
Networks on OS X act like bootable volumes, therefore, any files that are
"deleted" should be safe until the Trash is empty.

If this fails, there is a hidden dot Trashes folder that may contain the files,
but I'll send another message on how to access this as I want to be sure I tell
you correctly.

  Subject: Drop Box question

  Hello,
I am trying to instal the latest version of drop box on Lion 10.7.1. I opened
the DMG file and copied the drop box app into my applications folder and opened
it. That resulted in the message "Drop Box has no windows". I suspect this may
be because some time ago I had tried an earlier version of drop box which was
not Lion compatible and that earlier version has probably left some files
around.

If I run the drop box app in the drop box installer folder (without copying
it into my applications folder) I get a dialogue asking if I had a drop box
account followed by drop box set up. This created a drop box folder but when I
copied a file into that folder and opened the context menu for that file I did
not get the expected extra options related t drop box.

Using VoiceOver how can I tell whether drop box is properly installed and
working? If I first need to get rid of the old drop box and all its files how
do I do that?

  Many thanks for any tips.

Re: Apple TV isn't accessible for blind people

2011-09-09 Thread Travis Siegel

Well.
I didn't see anything in the message that would indicate he was
telling lies. Everything he said was as straightforward as he could
make it. I agree that some of the points probably weren't completely
accurate (I.E. you must use an apple provided hdmi cable) but he did
state that he was working with both apple and his own tv manufacturer
to get things working. It's likely apple had him use the usb port to
do one of those functions most users don't need to perform. It
wasn't spelled out in the message of course, but he didn't actually
state any falsehoods, merely his experiences, and although some of
those statements could be taken out of context, and interpreted to be
bad press, or lies against the apple tv, I see nothing directly
quoted that actually states any barefaced lies.

If anyone else sees any, please point them out.
This guy didn't have a compatible tv, and also didn't give the entire
backstory, which leads to some incorrect interpretations of his
statements, but I didn't see anywhere where he categorically denyed
that the apple tv didn't work, period end of story, only that he said
his experience with the apple tv didn't work for him at all.
Certainly, some of his statements weren't the best thought out, and
some aren't entirely accurate (such as the hdmi cable and the mini
usb cable) but I didn't see anything directly stating apple tv
overall was useless, only that blind users needed to be aware that
they may be in a similar situation, and as such, they are probably
better off using something else.
Sure, his timelines are off (tv newer than the last year and so on)
but again, nothing outright stating it doesn't work as a whole.
He even went out of his way to state that the apple folks were
extremely helpful.
Everyone here knows, that sometimes, identical hardware/software
behaves differently for different people/situations, and therefore,
it's likely his particular combination of tv/cables/apple tv/
everything else, simply didn't work, that happens, and when it does,
folks are bound to be upset about it.
He made no disparaging remarks about any of the hardware, merely
stated his experience, I see nothing wrong with that. A little
misleading in parts, sure, but again, I see nothing to backup the
huge claims I've been reading on the list here. Folks, he had a bad
experience, folks who have bad experiences are going to vent, and
sometimes the venting isn't the most well thought-out rebuttle of
items. That's no reason to flame the guy for writing a bunch of
lies, when he clearly did nothing of the sort.
Will this review cause others not to buy an apple tv? Maybe, but
there's loads of sighted folks who have had similar experiences, and
I don't see them quoted here claiming they're telling lies about apple.
Leave it alone and let it rest. There's nothing in this post to
raise the ire I've been seeing as a result.

Re: Confused about pictures

2011-09-09 Thread Travis Siegel
jpg and jpeg (for those vo users who love vo's acronym expansion,
read those two letter-by-letter to see the difference) are the same
file format, just different extensions. You can rename a JPG file to
JPEG or vice versa, and there will be no difference. On the other
hand, png is a completely different format than jpg files, as Lynne
pointed out in a different message. :)

So, the short answer is:
yes, jpg and jpeg are the same, and you can rename them to match.
png is another story, but conversion of formats is possible with

Re: copying audio cd's

2011-09-09 Thread Travis Siegel

Multiple methods of doing this.
First, you can use itunes to import the cd, which will (hopefully)
label the songs, author, and such all for you.
Secondly, you can just copy the aiff files onto a folder on your hd,
then use a utility like switch to change them to another format.
You can use quicktime (if you have the pro version) to do the
conversion as well, and I'm sure other utilities exist to do the same
thing as well. Lots of options.

Re: any pdf reading apps out there

2011-09-09 Thread Esther
Hi Kevin,

To add to the summary Travis gave, you might want to check out Skim. Skim is
an open source program that has been described as "Preview on steroids".
Here's the description on Macupdate:

Skim is a PDF reader and note-taker for OS X. It is designed to help you read
and annotate scientific papers in PDF, but is also great for viewing any PDF
file.

Features:

Viewing PDFs
Adding and editing notes
Highlighting important text, including one-swipe highlight modes
Making "snapshots" for easy reference
Navigation using table of contents or thumbnails, with visual history
View all your notes and highlights
Convenient reading in full screen
Giving powerful presentations, with built-in transitions
Handy preview of internal links
Focus using a reading bar
Magnification tool
Smart cropping tools
Extensive AppleScript support
Bookmarks
Saving passwords in Keychain
Export notes as text
Automatic download of remote PDFs
Support for Apple Remote Control
Interaction with LaTeX, SyncTeX, and PDFSync
Integration with BibDesk and other third party applications
Spotlight support
Highly customizable
And much more...

In practice, useful features of this app that have been discussed on this list
at earlier times include: (1) using it to present PDF format version of
PowerPoint or Keynote presentations -- you can set the View options to
"Presentation" either from the Menu bar or via shortcut (Command-Option-p), and
you can set up the transition options, again from the Menu bar Presentation
Options or via shortcut (Command-Option-t) and (2) using it to make
annotations, that can be separately printed out. The most complete description
of its operation was in a discussion on this list before archiving was set up.
However, I excerpted that post in a reply to Dónal about Skim on the
Macvisionaries list, so its possible to find that old post's contents in the
Mail Archive. It's feature rich, so that you may not need all the
functionality (for example, manipulating images includes some options that are
only usable with vision), and it is similar to Preview in layout, but adds a
second side-bar for the annotation features. Item 1) is useful for some
conferences where they request that the presentation be exported into PDF
format, which gets out of the problems caused by possible font incompatibility
in the various versions of PowerPoint, or in Keynote. Also, in earlier
versions of Skim, I would find some functions (such as using "Find" to search)
more stable for VoiceOver than in Preview.

There is also Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat Professional which can be used
with PDFs -- but these are really clunky to use with VoiceOver, so you'd only
do this if you had a protected PDF file that could not be read in any other
way.

Then, as you mention, there is Adobe Digital Editions Preview that will read
ePubs and PDFs with ADE DRM protection on your Desktop, but currently only in
English. And there is OverDrive on iOS devices. These both require you to
authorize your device or computer with Adobe.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

HI Geoff,
Many thanks for your reply. What do you mean by "restarting your MBP"? What is
the "MBP"?
Many thanks.

Re: Can anyone help with Iplayer Downloader?

2011-09-09 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hi Eleanor,
I suggest you try "Get iPlayer Automator" instead. Look for it on Google to
find it. It is a free download and it does work on Lion 10.7.1 for downloading
both radio and TV programs from the BBC iPlayer. See my post earlier today
about iPlayer Automator on how to use it. It is pretty accessible via
VoiceOver.

Can you search the contents of another computer's hard drive on the network

audiohijack pro major update for lion users

2011-09-09 Thread Courtney Curran
Hi,
I just wanted to let everyone know that's there's a major update to audiohijack
pro. What's so major about it is now the instant on feature now works with
lion, so the app you want to hijack doesn't have to relaunch before hijacking.
Hope this helps someone,
Courtney

Re: program that can backup specific folders

2011-09-09 Thread Travis Siegel

You can easily do this using a crontab entry, and a simple shell script.
Write your script to zip, tar, gzip, or some combination thereof that
compresses the folders in question, then copies the file to a
location of your choice. Then, after that, create a crontab entry
that will simply execute the script as often as you like.
Cron is part of unix, so it exists on every mac running osx, whether
it's a server version or not, so anyone can use it.
I'm actually (slightly) surprised it isn't mentioned more when folks
ask these kinds of questions. Even on the osx forums and other
discussion groups that turn up when you google for answers, cron is
rarely mentioned as a scheduling option.

Odd, but there it is. :)
Anyhow, You already have a solution, but this one is just another
option for those who are on a budget, or don't want to use funds to
backup a single file/folder/drive/some combination thereto. :)
