Re: I wonder how Im going to execute this project

2013-10-31 Thread Sean Murphy
Hi,

I would write it up in draft mode and not worry about the formatting until the
end. Use your own coding system if necessary to identify where the different
formatting is required. Then See if the tools you have can replace text with
formatting. Otherwise manually do it.

I would use word, but that doesn't appear to be an option.

Re: Question: Reading Webpages

2013-10-31 Thread Parham Doustdar

Hi Travis,

I'm aware of highlighting and the page markup being in different bits.

However, I have to reiterate here: I'm not trying to find what problems
Voiceover has, I'm just trying to see if they are possible to
circumvent. That is, I'm trying to see how I can get an experience like
that of Windows/Linux screen readers so that it would fall into my
comfort zone.

David kindly mentioned that every screen reader has its own quirks and
advantages, and that I shouldn't expect Voiceover to deliver the same
experience, Google highlighting the results or not. From that message, I
extracted the following answer to my question:

For _any_ reason, to read Google search results, you have to move to
the next object several times. There is no way to lower the number of
keystrokes (I.E. switching to read by line and then headings and back
takes as many, or even more, keystrokes than going through the website
address and the highlighted words in the website description).

Hope that recap helps someone else in the future :)
On 10/30/2013 5:27 PM, Travis Siegel wrote:
One thing to keep in mind about search results from google is that
google has the habbit of highlighting any search terms in the search
results. This has the unfortunate result of sometimes putting breaks
where they really shouldn't be, and vo acts accordingly. It is a bit
irritating, but you get used to it.
It's not a problem with voiceover, it's how the results are displayed,
vo has no control over that.

OCR Solutions for The Mac

Hi!

This is a subject I haven’t considered for some time, I’ve been using Abbey
Fine Reader Express with my Mac for some time and have found it to be very good
on the whole, what other OCR solutions are other people using?

I’m very impressed with Docuscan for Windows, how does one go about using that
on the Mac?

Editing a website

2013-10-31 Thread Andy Collins
Hi all -

I have two questions about trying to edit a website.

After logging in with my admin details, there are two things I want to do. The
first is to add more information to an existing text area. I kcan interact with
the text area, but when I try to add my new text to what is already there, it
begins to insert it at the beginning of the current text. How or what do I need
to do to have the cursor positioned after the last character, so as to add new
text that just follows on?

The other issue and this may well be the way the website has been designed, but
there are 3 buttons on the page. I want to select the third of these, but
trying to pass by the first 2 using the arrow keys doesn't work, no matter how
quickly I down arrow, the first button always gets activated. It's like when
the cursor goes over it, it opens what lies underneath, without me beening able
to pass it by, or use the usual VO space to select it.

I tried uisng the web rotor to get to the desired button, but it didn't see any
buttons! I'm still using Mountain Lion by the way.

Anybody help please? -

Andy

setting up an email account

2013-10-31 Thread Shannon Reece
Good morning,
Last week I purchased a Mac and have been doing rather well learning how to
operate it. However, I am confused about setting up an email account that is
not preconfigured as it were.
I got my gmail account set up in six seconds, it was easy. But I'd like to
set up my cox account and the email account for my domain. While I see the
new account option in mail, it seems to me that my only choices are
google, exchange and a couple of seemingly preconfigured choices.
Any ideas?
I am a very quick study but I find myself confused here.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

safari

2013-10-31 Thread Shannon Reece
Greetings, it's Shannon again, the new Mac user. Smile.
I have heard there is no way of going through links on a safari page, as
there is in, say, JFW's links list in Windows. Firstly, is this true?
and if so, what is the best way to handle a Safari page? I tend to use the
track pad or flick through using VO right or left arrows.
An exampel of my struggle happened today on the New York Times Page. I saw a
link that said single page, which puts the whole article on one page, and
this is how I like to read my articles inWindows because you avoid all the
junk.
But in Safari, I could not stop VoiceOver in time and there seemed to be no
quick way to get back to the single page link. Any ideas? I turned on
keyboard navigation so now if I press h for example I get to headings, but
is there anything else I can do?
And if I may, I also have a question about the reader command. In plowing
through Safari preferences, I saw that the reader command was hidden. SoI
showed it. So far none of the pages I visit have a reader option. Does VO
speak that reader is available like it does on the iPhone?
There is much I like about Safari, how it comes up and instantaneously plays
a video or audio, but navigating through a page gives me a headache. Smile.
Also my Mac is new, so it's got OS10 and all the latest updates.
thanks for any help.
I have been a quiet lurker here over the past month, trying to learn before
I made my purchase, and you all are very helpful.

Re: safari

2013-10-31 Thread Zachary Kline
Shannon,
You might want to look into an item called the web rotor. The command you want
is the O-u. This enables you to navigate by links, headings, or whatever, just
as in more familiar programs. With this particular case, I might also suggest
these Safari reader, command-shift-R. This declutters a lot of pages, and was
intended for news articles in particular. :-)
All the best,
Zack.

Blackboard Collaborate.

2013-10-31 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi folks,

Just wondering if anyone has managed to get this working on either Mac or IOS?
I tried logging onto a meeting with it this morning and it just hung. However
a machine running *cough* that other operating system, logged on fine.

I note that Collaborate is a Java based application and I’ve never really had
much joy with those on Mac. Anywho, thoughts welcome.

Re: setting up an email account

2013-10-31 Thread Zachary Kline
Hi Shanon,
I’m presuming you’re in the Mail preferences, Accounts section, when you try to
add another account. If you click the new account button, you’ll find radio
buttons for preconfigured types, and a final “Other Account,” button. This
should help.
Best,
Zack.

RE: safari

2013-10-31 Thread David Griffith
It is not true that there is no way of going through links.
There are multiple ways of navigating pages.
Use the web rota and quick nav to achieve a lot of this.
If you have quick nav turned on. Left and right keys together, you can cycle
through different presentations of link headings etc. by pressing left and
up key to cycle left and right and down cursor key to cycle right.
Pressing the up and down arrow will now navigate you through the last list
you called up.
In addition you might use item chooser which is my favourite way of finding
anything on a page.

Item chooser will provide a list of all the page elements and typing for
example single will narrow the list to any elements with that text in it.
This is a lot better than the JFW equivalent as it does not rely on you
finding the first letter of a link or heading or text. The item chooser will
preserve any element with, in this example, single in it,, wherever it
appears within that element, so it could be at the end of a line which says
for example Its great to be single.

and if so, what is the best way to handle a Safari page? I tend to use the

An exampel of my struggle happened today on the New York Times Page. I saw a

link that said single page, which puts the whole article on one page, and
this is how I like to read my articles inWindows because you avoid all the

But in Safari, I could not stop VoiceOver in time and there seemed to be no
quick way to get back to the single page link. Any ideas? I turned on
keyboard navigation so now if I press h for example I get to headings, but
is there anything else I can do?
And if I may, I also have a question about the reader command. In plowing
through Safari preferences, I saw that the reader command was hidden. SoI
showed it. So far none of the pages I visit have a reader option. Does VO

That is, I'm trying to see how I can get an experience like that of
Windows/Linux screen readers so that it would fall into my comfort zone.

David kindly mentioned that every screen reader has its own quirks and
advantages, and that I shouldn't expect Voiceover to deliver the same
experience, Google highlighting the results or not. From that message, I
extracted the following answer to my question:

For _any_ reason, to read Google search results, you have to move to the
next object several times. There is no way to lower the number of keystrokes
(I.E. switching to read by line and then headings and back takes as many, or
even more, keystrokes than going through the website address and the
highlighted words in the website description).

Hope that recap helps someone else in the future :)

It's not a problem with voiceover, it's how the results are displayed, vo

Hi Shanon,
The reader doesn’t work on every page, sadly. It will work on most articles and
similar content, and when it does is a huge timesaver. :) It’s also available
on iOS, if you have an iPhone or similar.
About the web rotor, all I can say is keep fiddling with it. Takes some getting
used to at first, but it really is the equivalent to insert-f7 and friends.
Best,

Re: OCR Solutions for The Mac

2013-10-31 Thread Leo Bissonnette
Hi,

DocuScan costs $299.00. It’s a good program and being able to access files
while on the move through iCloud is a good thing. I scan files at home and when
needed I can get to them from my iPhone.

Hope that helps clarify things for you.

Hi Isaac,
I found the other account choice--it would help if I tried all 3, or is it
4, smile, ways of moving around the menus. It is done, though now it does
not like my domain's certificate, but again, this could be user
error--entering something in the wrong place, etc. Time to tripple check
what I just did.

iPad

2013-10-31 Thread Chris H

Good evening all again.
Well finally had chance to look at an iPad today at the group!
A member of staff has one, an iPad 4 3G model.
All I can say is wow! I like the bigger screen very much! I was able to
tap around with two hands, something I can't do with an iPhone.
She is not a VoiceOver user so couldn't really get to play with it. But
least I now have an idea and can see myself using one in the future.

Just got to look at an iPad mini now for comparison.
Kind regards
Chris.

However, I am now able to instead perform this jump using the

I'm not sure whether this applies to Docuscan+ for the Mac, you could at one
time take out a Rental on the product for want of a better description, that
is you paid per month for as long as you required the use of the software so
perhaps that may be worth investigating.

As it happens - whilst I agree that the payment for a lifetime licence is a lot
out of the bank at one time - its a one off payment so therefore works out
cheaper in the long run, no additional charges for software updates over time
for example.

Many of the professional Off-The-Shelf solutions sell for around this amount
and will require you to pay upgrade charges down the track most likely as new
versions and updates come out.

I also like the fact that Docuscan+ has been designed for those who are in
similar situations as to what most of us are, that is to say the software has
been designed for those with a visual impairment for those users who have a
visual impairment.

2013-10-31 Thread Dane Trethowan
Sorry, I don't think I'm understanding your question, a PDF file is scanned in
a continual process, you tell Docuscan+ you want to scan a PDF file and then
the software presents you with a typical Open File dialogue box as found with
most applications on the Mac, you choose the file you wish to scan from here
and your Mac uploads it for recognition, Docuscan alerts you when recognition
is complete allowing you to edit the document, export it to another format and
so on.

I've not tried selecting more PDF documents at a time other than one.

RE: Retaining formatting from a PDF when the text is pasted into pages

2013-10-31 Thread David Griffith
I have not upgraded to Maverick yet but in terms of your PDF question can
answer some issues I think based on ML and Lion.
Copying PDF text is viable but personally I would paste it into TextEdit
rather than Pages. It may be that the new pages is different but in the
old version I found it impossible to use the VO A read all command to read
more than a page at a time. TextEdit does not have this limitation.

In terms of getting rid of hyphenation the easiest way to do this is to use
a global find and replace. Just search for each instance of a hyphen and
replace it with nothing. .
A word of caution though is that I found copying large PDF documents using
this message made my iNac unstable and it struggled to complete the task. I
had a relatively high powered machine with 16 GB of ram so if that struggles
it is probably not a recommended route.
With any large PDF I would use a conversion method. The failsafe is to send
it as an attachment to conv...@robobraille.org and get a text version back.
Alternatively if you want an ePub book then send the PDF to
e...@robobraille.org.

The text results can then be edited in TextEdit or Pages but of course you
lose formatting.
