Re: Selecting a block of text from a website on Lion
Hi there, One useful feature in Lion is the ability to use VO to select things. I've managed to select text in pages and Preview using the following method. I don't to pretend to have tested it thoroughly, and I might be wrong about some details, so don't shoot the messenger. :-) 1. find the block of text on the page and then interact. 2. Now, use vo-Enter to start the selection process. 3. Move along with vo-rightarrow until you hit the end of the text you want, then press vo-enter again. 4. Now hit cmd-c, and go to the textedit window you want to copy the text to. As I said, may be useful, may not. Dónal On 24 Jul 2011, at 20:38, John Panarese wrote: The service is still there. On Snow Leopard I used to press command+A to select all the text in the Safari window, then use the Safari service new textedit window containing selection which would copy the Safari text into a TextEdit window, and then copy the required text from the textedit window. Alas the service option new TextEdit window containing selection seems to have been removed in Lion. On Snow Leopard I was sometimes able to simply interact with the Safari page and use the arrow keys to select the desired text in the normal way. That does not seem to work on Lion either. So I tried the attached approach (which I had never used on Snow Leopard) and that does not seem to work on Lion either! I can manually create an empty textedit window and copy the Safari page into that and then select the desired text from there but that is hard work! I feel there should be an easier approach. Many thanks for any ideas. Here is my situation more specifically: I bought my Mac when I visited my parents in the United States. When Snow Leopard came out, I had friends send me the DVD from the U.S. I currently live in Vienna, Austria, and I do not plan to visit the States for at least three months. When I go to the App Store here in Austria, will it be possible for me to purchase an English version of Lion? Sometimes, companies automatically assume that if an order originates in a certain country, that particular language will be the default language when the product is purchased. While I don't mind speaking German in the least, I still prefer to work with my operating systems in English. Re: Xcode 4.1
Thanks Brian, I'm very very familiar with the Renaissance project (as you know from other lists), but good to know work is stil ongoing. Plus, even full accessibility wouldn't help a blind person come up with good layout, sizing, font and color selections, etc. No matter. You don't need Apple's dev tools to make a UI for your app. I ported Renaissance from NextStep. You can use it to build your app's interface from a description in an XML file. The XML file describes the types of controls that should be in a window, along with their proportional and logical relationships. Based on that info, controls are automatically arranged and sized for you. If you don't like part of the automatic behavior, you can include an attribute for one of the controls to force it to a specific position, size, font, style, etc. Specify every detail, or describe the basics and let layout happen automatically. It is a bit like WX Widgets, but even more help for layout. My last release was over 6 months ago. The current release works, but has limited documentation. If you have a coding background, you should be able to figure it out. If you're just starting out, then you'll be quite confused. I'm working a bit on updating it with additional docs and examples when I can, but the hobby portion of my coding life has recently been consumed with some VoIP and scripting projects. http://blog.bryansmart.com/2010/10/25/renaissancex-2010-02-28/ Bryan On Jul 20, 2011, at 6:37 PM, Dónal Fitzpatrick wrote: Hi Nick, At this stage just your general impressions will do fine. Re: possible bug in iTunes 10.4 and some Mail bugs too
HI Chris, Again you beat me to it! I was just going to post about the option-up/downarrow problem. Previously in SL Mail I used to be able to scroll to the bottom and the top of the message list by holding down option + either the up or down arrow. This no longer works, has this keystroke changed? Mail now reads out spelling mistakes in a senders email too, this is quite annoying. I am not really interested in other people's typos as it is distracting. I am only really interested in my own spelling. When opening a conversation (previously known as thread) I hit enter to open all the messages (I know some used to prefer to expand the thread/conversation instead), previously the first message in the thread would be shown first, and then I would press back space to delete and close the message to get to the next one in the thread. Now Mail has this in reverse order, the newest message pops up first and the message that should have been first now appears at the back. So you end up reading the conversation back to front. Alex sounds very scary when you backspace too, but I am quite liking the new iCal though. Hi all, One feature of Lion that some of you may not be aware of is the fact that the state of your applications is maintained when you exit. So, for example, if you go to: www.mac-access.net and exit safari with cmd-q, the next time you launch Safari you'll be taken back there. This is similar to the behaviour of Safari on IOS devices. Now to prevent this, you have two choices. You can disable this behaviour globally in system preferences|General. Alternatively, you can exit the app using CMD-Option-q. cheers, Dónal Dónal Fitzpatrick dfitz...@computing.dcu.ie --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find a monthly formatted archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at the following URL: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html The Mac-Access mailing list is guaranteed malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and worm-free! Been using this for quite some time so was most interested when a comprehensive update for the World Clock app for Ipad was released and the developer has overwhelmed his customer base with some new and impressive features. One of my favorites is the ability to set alarms for your world clocks. For example suppose you're talking to someone in New York on Skype and they ask you to ring back at 4 there time in the afternoon, you know how New Yorkers believe the world revolves around them smile, all you have to do is select New York from the World Clocks and set an alarm for 4 PM so you don't even have to worry about how many hours behind your time zone New York just happens to be. Talk about some really nifty features in this app, bring up multiple world clocks on the screen and do a compare between each, bring up maps to show your location in relation to another world clock - don't know how this would work as I obviously can't see the map smile - and a whole host of background themes to boot. You'll find the World Clock app in the obvious place, at the Itunes store and its about $02.00.
