[Mac-access]: Apple TV and airplay
Went through my old emails, as I thought someone mentioned how you would use your MacBook air, or other to play through to Apple TV. Spent most of the afternoon, trying to find airplay. Could not find it. Closest I could find was AirDrop, this is not the same thing. Tried a Bluetooth option as well Could someone please tell me, how I can take my Mac air and get it alignedto play videos from the Internet. Yes you can play from your Mac to an Apple TV using AirPlay, by default you’ll find what you want in iTunes, select “AirPlay” and you’ll see your Apple TV listed in the available devices, select this and everything you play with iTunes will be streamed to your Apple TV. Thanks, and I would've never considered iTunes for a place to look for airplay. Can I also, go to the Internet and play from there as well? I'm not sure, how I would go to Safari from iTunes? Okay, if you want to do that sort of thing then you’ll need a third party package such as Airfoil. The Speaker is mains powered so it would be at home on a kitchen counter or in a small room given its size and the space will be well filled with sound. I'll detail the model later after I've had more of a play with the unit but to be honest, I don't think there's much more for me to do with the Tompson Bluetooth AirPlay speaker except to sit back and enjoy the music. Bowers And Wilkins A5 AirPlay Speaker System
Ordered one of these and I should have it tomorrow, I was going to buy the Bowers Wilkins Z2 dock but to be honest, I'm not a great fan of docks, how long will it be before the dock standard changes again smile, at least with AirPlay things will still work. Someone asked about the Bowers Wilkins Controller App and its Accessibility? Well the App is accessible to a point but you really need sight to use the App, for example you have to press the buttons on the IOS screen corresponding to the colour of the light showing on the front of the A5, you can label the buttons in the App easily enough but what's the point if you can't see the lights. A Cheap AirPlay System

I've just ordered a cheap AirPlay system made by Tompson which seems to offer a lot of bang for the buck, one of the things that attracted me to this system was its versatile connectivity functionality, is the first I've seen that can either use AirPlay or Bluetooth for streaming, the unit also boasts a USB connection for either an IOS device or a standard drive. The specs for the audio seem pretty good, 60 Watts RMS, - 15 per channel and 30 for the sub-woofer. The good thing about all this is that AirPlay devices of reasonable quality for acceptable prices are now starting to make their appearance in the market place and we're also seeing some innovation. It wasn't all that long ago when portable AirPlay devices were totally unheard of, I bought a Bose Soundlink Air AirPlay device for its portability, it can run from mains and battery power. Since that time I've seen a couple of other portable AirPlay systems come onto the market though I don't know how good they are, Pioneer for example make one. airPlay and OSX Mavericks
Always something to discover or something I've missed long ago it seems smile. I like the idea of being able to specify an airPlay device as your sound output device in System Preferences, that's a nifty feature that will save me a whole heap of time in the future. What I've also found is that you cannot set individual airPlay devices for output as far as I know from other Apps. For example if you set your Airport Express as your airPlay output device in Sound Output Devices then that's the only one you can use from other Apps. I was hoping to be able to set a different airPlay device for Skype say, if I was in the kitchen I could set Skype to ring on my airPlay device I have out there thus guaranteeing I'd hear the phone ring whilst preparing meals etc. As I say its unfortunate the airPlay feature isn't more flexible but perhaps that may come in time. airPlay And Plenty Of Time On My Hands
Hi! Its Melbourne Cup Day here folks, means that just about everyone's on Holiday just for a horse race, in other words its the most boring day of the year so thought I'd do some testing and amuse myself by seeing just how robust airPlay can be and if it would fall over as I added devices and streams. So what do we have going here? Let's see if I can remember everything smile. iTunes on the Mac is streaming to my older Airport Express which is connected to the Yamaha RXV520 in the den, been streaming for 7 hours now and still going strong. iPhone 5 is streaming to the Denon AVR2113 in the lounge, has been streaming for an hour and a quarter and still going strong. Mac Mini is streaming iTunes to my Bose Soundlink Air portable speaker system, has been streaming for 2 hours and still going strong though battery of the Soundlink's likely to go flat at any time. my iPad 4th Generation is streaming to my Second Generation Airport Express which is in the bedroom, has been streaming for 2 hours and still going strong. And last but not least, my iPod touch is streaming to my JBL onAir system on top of the fridge in my kitchen, has been streaming for the last 9 hours and still going. Thinking About Airplay Systems for IOS and OSX
Hi! If you're thinking about an Airplay device right now then the world may be your oyster. Many Airplay devices come with iPhone dock connectors, unfortunately these connectors in the main are the older 30 pin connecters and not the newer Lightning type connecter which is a lot smaller. The older models with the older style connector it seems are going quite cheap right now, picked up another JBL Onbeat Air system for $75.00 which is around a quarter of the money I paid for the system nearly 2 years ago. I don't need the dock connector given that I don't have any devices to fit it any longer but I can however use the Airplay functionality and the line-in socket but even better than that! I'm getting a very nice sound system for a fraction of what its really worth, all because of an old dock connector. Naturally, those of you who own older generations of IOS products - everything up to iPhone 4S, all iPads up to the Third Generation and iPods up to the Forth generation of iPod Touch can take full advantage of the dock - and even if your IOS device is later than those specified you can still use Airplay. Hello, the voice-over sounds are available, but the speech is disappearing entirely. So even if I tried with my iPhone to our place something, then back would automatically try to default and apply when switched on. So How Many Airplay Devices Do You Want?
Hi! Just taken a look on eBay, I searched for Airplay and was amazed at just how many different Airplay capable docks, systems and portable units are out there. I found 264 different items which ranged from small nice sounding portables to surround-sound systems to digital radios which contained the Airplay functionality. I'm looking to purchase a new Airplay compatible system and as it stands I'm favoring the Bose Sound Link Airplay system, I have a Bose Wave II radio in the house so I guess I have something to go on with regard to what the Soundlink Air will sound like - if people haven't heard Bose then I would suggest that perhaps they take some time to hear some Bose equipment for themselves,the smaller Wave systems etc sound incredible but I'm rambling -. 2 nice things struck me about the Bose Soundlin Air, price is very competitive and the unit can be run on either AC or optional rechargeable batteries, the Bose is the first Airplay compatible unit I've heard of which offers portable battery operation. I'll keep the list informed of my final purchase of Airplay equipment but before I do close this message I would like to heap praise on the former Airplay system I had which was a JBL Onbeat Air. I really would rather forget the Airport Express. :) Apple could, and should have put a lot more thought into the design of their Airport and Time Capsule products I think. Hello everybody I've just bought Gordon and I an airplay-enabled Panasonic desktop audio system which I'm hoping we can use to play audio on our iPhone and third generation iPod Touch. I thought air play was only from an ios device to a device, not from a device to an ios device. I could be wrong though as I don't have any air play compatible stuff yet. I understand by playing with Airfoil and its Speaker application that both devices need to be connected to the same wifi network before they can be seen by music and other audio applications. So say in the music app you select one or more tracks, double tap the airplay button, then double tap the option corresponding to your Airplay device. Hi Sarah I'll have to look at this because my understanding is that iOS5.1.1 now supports Airplay devices natively. So, for instance, we can set up our Panasonic device and it should appear in the AirPlay list. I could, of course, be totally wrong as I've never paid much attention to AirPlay until now. But given the fact that we have an AppleTV as well, maybe it's time I did. Yes you can providing the speakers are Airplay compatible. Or you could install Airfoil Speakers at the very minimum on your PC or mac and transmit audio wirelessly that way. It still comes in very handy if, for example you want to broadcast from an IOS5.1 device to multiple AirPlay devices simultaneously. Hi Geoff Yes, please don't misunderstand me. I'm sure there are scenarios where AirFoil will be of great help. I'm not familiar enough with Airplay as a whole to comment in detail. The only thing I can say is that it works. :) As for the review, we think it would be better posted to our sister group. However, I'll post a link when I get it done. Lynne is working on another project at the moment, as am I. So the review may have to wait a while. But the more I play with this machine, the more I like it. I'll keep you advised if I discover anything else. But the iPod and iPhone dock is truly superb. The LCD display panel slides off to the side of the machine which exposes the dock. My iPhone 4S fits perfectly in the dock and, when you press the button to slide the display back into the centre of the machine, the dock moves backward, taking your iOS device with it, and then it's hidden by the display. You can since the iOS device's contents so that all of the info is displayed on your main screen, and you can control the device fully by way of a remote control or top-mounted buttons. The iOS device is really well supported. The Panasonic picks up your bookmarks in, for instance, audio books and lets you start playing from there if you wish. There are so many other things I haven't yet discovered. Hi All, I just got today's MacUpdate promo app, AirServer. This is an interesting app because it lets you use iOS apps that support AirPlay and direct the output to your Mac. With the iOS 5 update that splits off the sound of VoiceOver, and also improves the responsiveness of streaming, this capability has become more interesting. One of the intriguing comments on the MacUpdate web site was from someone who was using this app to stream to on an old G4 PowerPC running OS X 10.4 Tiger, and getting high quality of sound. If this feature sounds like Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil Speakers, it's because it is similar; both applications use Apple's underlying AirPlay and AirTunes design. AirFoil had more features than earlier versions of AirServer, but this was recently re-written, and for $5.59 seemed worth a try. So far, I like this. Instances where this is useful include when you'd like to use better speakers on the content. Also, AirPlay streams video and images, so I used this to have someone check my image-taking with the camera for OCR by sending shots from the camera roll to a Mac on the same network. I haven't played very long with this, so there may still be some hiccups. One thing is that this program doesn't have a trial demo. On the other hand, the price was low enough and the review comments sufficiently positive to warrant a trial. I think the $5.59 price is only good for about five and a half more hours. (Sorry, I've been interrupted numerous times in composing this post.) Full price is $7.99, and after today there will still be a partial discount of $6.79 for the new two weeks. Sure or an audio receiver that has optical audio out. If you go the audio only route you are not able to watch netflix as netflix does complain there is no TV connected. It is hooked to a Stereo Receiver and I play music from I Tunes from both my iPhone and my computer. I'm not aware of other devices. No I think it's the same, airfoil works for me too. Airplay seems to work to remote speakers singlely so if I choose the dining room airport express in that room I can listen there but when i try the multi speaker setting it just comes out of the computer. Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba software, along with the free Airfoil Speakers (included), will do just what Apple's Airplay technology does, but is more flexible. You can download a free fully functional trial that inserts noise on transmissions longer than ten minutes from www.rogueamoeba.com.
