AirPlay

2012-05-24 Thread Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith
Hello everybody

I've just bought Gordon and I an airplay-enabled Panasonic desktop audio system
which I'm hoping we can use to play audio on our iPhone and third generation
iPod Touch. Just to confirm, what steps are necessary to set up an airplay
device on the iOS end?

Thank you.

Hello, the voice-over sounds are available, but the speech is disappearing
entirely. So even if I tried with my iPhone to our place something, then back
would automatically try to default and apply when switched on.

Perhaps under system settings in the sounds pain check to see where the default
output is being sent. Sounds like it's being routed to airplay.

Receiver and I play music from I Tunes from both my iPhone and my
computer. I'm not aware of other devices.

Sure or an audio receiver that has optical audio out. If you go the
audio only route you are not able to watch netflix as netflix does
complain there is no TV connected.

I thought air play was only from an ios device to a device, not from a device

Re: AirPlay

2012-05-24 Thread chris hallsworth
I understand by playing with Airfoil and its Speaker application that
both devices need to be connected to the same wifi network before they
can be seen by music and other audio applications. So say in the music
app you select one or more tracks, double tap the airplay button, then
double tap the option corresponding to your Airplay device.

Re: AirPlay

Hi Chris

OK, I'm hoping that we can do this without AirFoil now, although if need be I
do have a license for it. I guess that the first thing I need to do is break
my usual number 1 golden rule, consult the user guide for the Panasonic system
we just bought! ;-)

Thanks for your input.

Re: AirPlay

2012-05-24 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi Sarah

I'll have to look at this because my understanding is that iOS5.1.1 now
supports Airplay devices natively. So, for instance, we can set up our
Panasonic device and it should appear in the AirPlay list. I could, of course,
be totally wrong as I've never paid much attention to AirPlay until now. But
given the fact that we have an AppleTV as well, maybe it's time I did.

Yes you can providing the speakers are Airplay compatible. Or you could
install Airfoil Speakers at the very minimum on your PC or mac and
transmit audio wirelessly that way.

2012-05-24 Thread Gordon Smith
As long as you have compatible devices. There are a lot of them now which
sport AirPlay and the one Lynne and I bought today is excellent. I'll discuss
it on our other list, Techno Chat. On that subject, if anybody wants to join
that group where you can discuss anything technology, including Windows, the
address to write to is:
techno-chat-requ...@techno-chat.net
oh and while I'm on, the Windows equivalent of this list is at:
windows-access-requ...@techno-chat.net

In both cases put the word "subscribe", (no quotes) in the subject line of the
message.

It still comes in very handy if, for example you want to broadcast from an

Re: AirPlay

Hi Geoff

Yes, please don't misunderstand me. I'm sure there are scenarios where AirFoil
will be of great help. I'm not familiar enough with Airplay as a whole to
comment in detail. The only thing I can say is that it works. :)

As for the review, we think it would be better posted to our sister group.
However, I'll post a link when I get it done. Lynne is working on another
project at the moment, as am I. So the review may have to wait a while. But
the more I play with this machine, the more I like it.

I'll keep you advised if I discover anything else. But the iPod and iPhone
dock is truly superb. The LCD display panel slides off to the side of the
machine which exposes the dock. My iPhone 4S fits perfectly in the dock and,
when you press the button to slide the display back into the centre of the
machine, the dock moves backward, taking your iOS device with it, and then it's
hidden by the display. You can since the iOS device's contents so that all of
the info is displayed on your main screen, and you can control the device fully
by way of a remote control or top-mounted buttons. The iOS device is really
well supported. The Panasonic picks up your bookmarks in, for instance, audio
books and lets you start playing from there if you wish. There are so many
other things I haven't yet discovered. But hey, I'm off to bed now so I'd
better stop there. :)

Oh, absolutely! Gordon should probably have qualified his comments regarding
AirFoil by saying that "We", rather than the more generic "You" no longer need
AirFoil. All of our devices are AirPlay compatible; as all but one is an iOS
device or a Mac. The Panasonic he mentioned last night is the exception but it

Pushing audio from an IOS device to an AIr Play compatible device has been
supported for quite some time. However, I believe that if you want to do it the
oother way, that is push audio from an airplay device to an IOS device the
Airfoil Speakers app still needs to be installed on the IOS device.

Yes, for example if you have a speaker called "kitchen" in your kitchen, you
would tap the airplay button on the IPad and select the kitchen link and tap.

airPlay and OSX Mavericks

2014-01-08 Thread Dane Trethowan
Always something to discover or something I've missed long ago it seems .

I like the idea of being able to specify an airPlay device as your sound output
device in System Preferences, that's a nifty feature that will save me a whole
heap of time in the future.

What I've also found is that you cannot set individual airPlay devices for
output as far as I know from other Apps.

For example if you set your Airport Express as your airPlay output device in
Sound Output Devices then that's the only one you can use from other Apps.

I was hoping to be able to set a different airPlay device for Skype say, if I
was in the kitchen I could set Skype to ring on my airPlay device I have out
there thus guaranteeing I'd hear the phone ring whilst preparing meals etc.

As I say its unfortunate the airPlay feature isn't more flexible but perhaps
that may come in time.

Anyway a nice start at least and it does mean that I don't have to use Airfoil
to stream audio from audio sources - other than iTunes - to airPlay devices any
longer from the Mac.

A Cheap AirPlay System

2014-02-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

I've just ordered a cheap AirPlay system made by Tompson which seems to offer a
lot of bang for the buck, one of the things that attracted me to this system
was its versatile connectivity functionality, is the first I've seen that can
either use AirPlay or Bluetooth for streaming, the unit also boasts a USB
connection for either an IOS device or a standard drive.

The specs for the audio seem pretty good, 60 Watts RMS, - 15 per channel and 30
for the sub-woofer.

The test will be when the unit arrives next week and I can put it through its
paces, will write more about it then.

Re: A Cheap AirPlay System

2014-02-25 Thread Dane Trethowan
The good thing about all this is that AirPlay devices of reasonable quality for
acceptable prices are now starting to make their appearance in the market place
and we're also seeing some innovation.

It wasn't all that long ago when portable AirPlay devices were totally unheard
of, I bought a Bose Soundlink Air AirPlay device for its portability, it can
run from mains and battery power.

Since that time I've seen a couple of other portable AirPlay systems come onto
the market though I don't know how good they are, Pioneer for example make one.

Exciting news regarding Apple Airplay

2011-07-29 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Apologies for those of you who will find this old hack.

An article appeared in one of our local newspapers yesterday, the article
discussed Apple's Airplay facilities available through IOS devices and iTunes
running on Mac or Windows PC's, Airplay allows the user to stream audio/video
from say an iPad to a compatible device such as an Apple TV, Airport express
and now! a whole new range of surround-sound receivers and similar devices from
Pioneer.

Other company's such as Denon and JBL have signed up with Apple to use the
Airplay technology so we're going to see some exciting products in the not to
distant future I'm sure.

Pioneer have just released 2 new surround-sound receivers equipped with Airplay
functionality, the first model retails for $1099.00 Australian which isn't a
bad price for a surround-sound receiver though the next question will be how
accessible the receiver is?

I take heart here because the receiver can be controlled by an iPad app
according to the article so those without vision are in with a good chance of
being able to control the receiver.

I've been saving for a new surround-sound receiver for quite some time and I've
had my eye on one of the Denon receivers and why? Because I know it to be fully
accessible, every function and setting can be controlled through a HTML
interface and I'll leave that for a different thread on a different list
though now I know Denon to have signed up with Apple to use the Airplay
technology? Well I don't mind waiting to see what sort of product Denon will
release.

[Mac-access]: Apple TV and airplay

2014-11-29 Thread Mark
Went through my old emails, as I thought someone mentioned how you would use
your MacBook air, or other to play through to Apple TV.
Spent most of the afternoon, trying to find airplay. Could not find it.
Closest I could find was AirDrop, this is not the same thing.
Tried a Bluetooth option as well
Could someone please tell me, how I can take my Mac air and get it alignedto
play videos from the Internet.
Or other
Thanks
Mark

Snow Leopard: Airplay and multiple speakers

2011-07-28 Thread Gordon Keen
Hi

As I am hanging on a while to upgrade ( I'll be the lonely bloke waiting for
the bugs to be fixed in Lion before buying a mac book air ) can I ask has
anybody had problems getting airplay to work nicely with multi room set ups?

I keep having problems when I have itunes set up to play through both my
computer and the airport express attached to my hi-fi in the dining room and I
have to reboot the router to get wireless back to the remote speakers.

BTW it works perfectly if I select only the dining room airport express in
airplay. shrug

Hi all.
And I also want to tell you about a program that will let you stream
audio from any application to any device on your network, even
non-airplay supported devices. Airfoil from Rogue Amoeba software, along
with the free Airfoil Speakers (included), will do just what Apple's
Airplay technology does, but is more flexible. You can download a free
fully functional trial that inserts noise on transmissions longer than
ten minutes from www.rogueamoeba.com. Although I do not own a mac, I
hear Airfoil and possibly Airfoil speakers is fully accessible with
VoiceOver. The price of Airfoil is $25, and is a single user, unlimited
machine license.

Chat soon.

Re: Airport & Time Capsule, [Was AirPlay]

2012-05-28 Thread Gordon Smith
I really would rather forget the Airport Express. :) Apple could, and should
have put a lot more thought into the design of their Airport and Time Capsule
products I think. But this is just my personal opinion. We own one time
capsule and, to be honest, if it fails on us in the future, I really can't see
us going the same route, (pardon the awful pun), again.

Bowers And Wilkins A5 AirPlay Speaker System

2014-03-03 Thread Dane Trethowan
Ordered one of these and I should have it tomorrow, I was going to buy the
Bowers & Wilkins Z2 dock but to be honest, I'm not a great fan of docks, how
long will it be before the dock standard changes again , at least with
AirPlay things will still work.

Someone asked about the Bowers & Wilkins Controller App and its Accessibility?
Well the App is accessible to a point but you really need sight to use the App,
for example you have to press the buttons on the IOS screen corresponding to
the colour of the light showing on the front of the A5, you can label the
buttons in the App easily enough but what's the point if you can't see the
lights.

Thankfully there's an alternate way to set up the A5, plug it into your
network, access the built-in HTML Interface and set up the A5 to join your
Wi-Fi network from there, this seems to be pretty standard procedure these days
for most Wi-Fi compatible players and products.

Yes you can play from your Mac to an Apple TV using AirPlay, by default you’ll
find what you want in iTunes, select “AirPlay” and you’ll see your Apple TV
listed in the available devices, select this and everything you play with
iTunes will be streamed to your Apple TV.

Re: Snow Leopard: Airplay and multiple speakers

2011-07-29 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Gordon,
I didn't see any replies to your question about airplay on SL to multiple
output sources. I'm also running SL. And Airplay was working for me, outputting
to an airport express, an apple tv and the computer all at the same time. and
now it does not work, and I have no idea why. Indeed, whenever I try to change
my output from the computer, or go into the multiple speakers dialogue with
table, I am unable to activate any other options. I can press vo space on them
or do the up and down arrows with QN engaged, and the only thing that happens
is that the volume turns down to 0. It is as if I have focus set on the mute
button instead of one of the speaker selections. I know my network is not the
problem, because I have airfoil, and it still works perfectly. I guess that's
different from your problem, but I thought I'd post about it, since it is
related to sl and airplay.

Re: Snow Leopard: Airplay and multiple speakers

2011-07-30 Thread Gordon Keen
No I think it's the same, airfoil works for me too.

Airplay seems to work to remote speakers singlely so if I choose the dining
room airport express in that room I can listen there but when i try the multi
speaker setting it just comes out of the computer.

Thinking About Airplay Systems for IOS and OSX

2013-10-28 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

If you're thinking about an Airplay device right now then the world may be your
oyster.

Many Airplay devices come with iPhone dock connectors, unfortunately these
connectors in the main are the older 30 pin connecters and not the newer
Lightning type connecter which is a lot smaller.

The older models with the older style connector it seems are going quite cheap
right now, picked up another JBL Onbeat Air system for $75.00 which is around a
quarter of the money I paid for the system nearly 2 years ago.

I don't need the dock connector given that I don't have any devices to fit it
any longer but I can however use the "Airplay" functionality and the line-in
socket but even better than that! I'm getting a very nice sound system for a
fraction of what its really worth, all because of an old dock connector.

Naturally, those of you who own older generations of IOS products - everything
up to iPhone 4S, all iPads up to the Third Generation and iPods up to the Forth
generation of iPod Touch can take full advantage of the dock - and even if your
IOS device is later than those specified you can still use "Airplay".

"Airplay" can be used from your computer - Mac or Windows - with iTunes or you
can use Airfoil to "Hijack" an application such as Winamp or an audio device on
your computer, the audio from that source is then streamed to your "Airplay"
device, multiple devices can be supported at any one time and the whole system
can be controlled from either your computer or an IOS App.

airPlay And Plenty Of Time On My Hands

2013-11-04 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Its "Melbourne Cup" Day here folks, means that just about everyone's on Holiday
just for a horse race, in other words its the most boring day of the year so
thought I'd do some testing and amuse myself by seeing just how robust airPlay
can be and if it would fall over as I added devices and streams.

So what do we have going here? Let's see if I can remember everything .

iTunes on the Mac is streaming to my older Airport Express which is connected
to the Yamaha RXV520 in the den, been streaming for 7 hours now and still going
strong.

iPhone 5 is streaming to the Denon AVR2113 in the lounge, has been streaming
for an hour and a quarter and still going strong.

Mac Mini is streaming iTunes to my Bose Soundlink Air portable speaker system,
has been streaming for 2 hours and still going strong though battery of the
Soundlink's likely to go flat at any time.

my iPad 4th Generation is streaming to my Second Generation Airport Express
which is in the bedroom, has been streaming for 2 hours and still going strong.

And last but not least, my iPod touch is streaming to my JBL onAir system on
top of the fridge in my kitchen, has been streaming for the last 9 hours and
still going.

Now all this to me seems quite impressive, II'm sure that other Wireless
routers may have a bit of trouble with all this data flowing this way and that,
certainly one of the routers I had not so long ago in the past wouldn't have
stood all this - not to mention me playing about on the Internet and sending
eMail from the iMac into the bargain -, I'm using an Asus RTN56U router and if
anyone wants specific details on that then move the message to techno-chat and
ask me there .

So How Many Airplay Devices Do You Want?

2013-07-11 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

Just taken a look on eBay, I searched for "Airplay" and was amazed at just how
many different Airplay capable docks, systems and portable units are out there.

I found 264 different items which ranged from small nice sounding portables to
surround-sound systems to digital radios which contained the Airplay
functionality.

I'm looking to purchase a new "Airplay" compatible system and as it stands I'm
favoring the Bose Sound Link Airplay system, I have a Bose Wave II radio in the
house so I guess I have something to go on with regard to what the Soundlink
Air will sound like - if people haven't heard Bose then I would suggest that
perhaps they take some time to hear some Bose equipment for themselves, the
smaller Wave systems etc sound incredible but I'm rambling -.

2 nice things struck me about the Bose Soundlin Air, price is very competitive
and the unit can be run on either AC or optional rechargeable batteries, the
Bose is the first Airplay compatible unit I've heard of which offers portable
battery operation.

I'll keep the list informed of my final purchase of Airplay equipment but
before I do close this message I would like to heap praise on the former
Airplay system I had which was a JBL Onbeat Air. This unit isn't avaialble any
longer it seems, the system had heaps to offer such as an adjustable iPod dock,
easy to setup Airplay function, good sound and small size which meant it could
be fitted just about anywhere, if you're looking for something which is easy to
use and small - and if you can purchase a JBL Onbeat Air - then grab it!

Today's mupromo app, AirServer ($5.59), lets you use AirPlay streaming from iOS device to Mac

2011-10-28 Thread Esther
Hi All,

I just got today's MacUpdate promo app, AirServer. This is an interesting app
because it lets you use iOS apps that support AirPlay and direct the output to
your Mac. With the iOS 5 update that splits off the sound of VoiceOver, and
also improves the responsiveness of streaming, this capability has become more
interesting. One of the intriguing comments on the MacUpdate web site was from
someone who was using this app to stream to on an old G4 PowerPC running OS X
10.4 Tiger, and getting high quality of sound. If this feature sounds like
Rogue Amoeba's AirFoil Speakers, it's because it is similar; both applications
use Apple's underlying AirPlay and AirTunes design. AirFoil had more features
than earlier versions of AirServer, but this was recently re-written, and for
$5.59 seemed worth a try. So far, I like this. Instances where this is useful
include when you'd like to use better speakers on the content. Also, AirPlay
streams video and images, so I used this to have
someone check my image-taking with the camera for OCR by sending shots from
the camera roll to a Mac on the same network.

I haven't played very long with this, so there may still be some hiccups. One
thing is that this program doesn't have a trial demo. On the other hand, the
price was low enough and the review comments sufficiently positive to warrant a
trial. I think the $5.59 price is only good for about five and a half more
hours. (Sorry, I've been interrupted numerous times in composing this post.)
Full price is $7.99, and after today there will still be a partial discount of
$6.79 for the new two weeks.

Here's the link to the mupromo page:

Once again, for new users, there is a one-time CAPTCHA to negotiate in setting
up your MacUpdate account for the first time. After that, you can just access
the account for records of your purchases, serial numbers and receipts. If
someone else tries this app, it would be good to hear some more feedback.
Don't try streaming pre-iOS 5 if you want to have VoiceOver cleanly separated.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Today's mupromo app, AirServer ($5.59), lets you use AirPlay streaming from iOS device to Mac

2011-10-28 Thread Sarah Alawami
sounds neet. I take it a wilreless network is required though? but this does
sound neat.
