Re: [Mac-access]: Listing the information about the HD volume
Well you can do it one of 3 ways. 1. Highlight the drive when you hit cmd shift c from the finder and press cmd I. 2. navigate to the drive in the cmd shift c (I'll call it the computers and volumes list) and press cmd option I to get that info 3. Launch the terminal, cd to your drive and type df -H You will get a lot of info about that drive there. Re: [Mac-access]: FLUCTUATING VOLUME WITH VO
I have never personally had this problem but I do not use airplay. There are only 2 features I can think of which may be causing this. 1. audio Ducking. This is the feature where VO reduces the sound level of any program if the Voiceover synth is active. I enjoy this feature but you can turn it off in VO Utility to see if that helps. 2. Positional audio. This is the feature where Voiceover balance alters according to cursor positioning on the screen, I believe this is on by default but I turn it off. It is probably neither of these things but I thought I would mention them. You should both setting in VO Utility. Re: [Mac-access]: FLUCTUATING VOLUME WITH VO
Hi, David Thank you for pointing me at these possibilities as it has allowed me to fix the problem! As you say, it’s unlikely to be these but, when I was double-checking, I noticed that a few things were not as they had once been…for example, the attributes volume was set higher than other volumes and, in addition, somehow the verbosity option had changed to speak changes when attributes changed rather than do nothing! I have now, yet again, reset all volume levels to my choice and updated the verbosity settings and will keep an eye on how things go from now on. Thanks again. I do not have to use the option key to change volume. Re: Radio Volume and VO Volume
One way to control sound is to pipe the audio through audio hijack. I regularly use audio hijack from Rogue Amoeba to provide me mute capabilities on apps that otherwise don't have them. For instance, although the mlb.com does have mute capabilities, I much prefer to use the one provided by audio hijack, because it means I don't have to go hunting for the mute button again after it gets pressed, since vo cursor doesn't always stay in one place on that page. Simply hijack the audio, but don't begin recording, and all of the functions of hijack audio are at your fingertips, the most often used of course which is the mute button. I use it a lot when watching flash content online, since vo can't talk to flash itself, it's real hard to mute audio for something, especially on those pages that insist you really want to hear what they have to say regardless of what you might think. Unfortunately, this method can't contro volume, but I thought it might be helpful anyhow. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Re: Is there a way to stop voice over not to turn down the sound volume while you are listening to streaming radio??
I'm thinking the one you baught from the store is running mountain lion. go to about in the apple menu and vo right. if you hear anything other then 10.9.1 or 10.9.0 you are running either mountain lion or lion. I had a phone do that with me. I had to get a new one and it was running ios6.0.4 which was about 2 years go if I recall. they do not update the new phones when they get them. they assume you will. Re: Is there a way to stop voice over not to turn down the sound volume while you are listening to streaming radio??
The best way I know to do this is to hit control option command and right or left arrow until you get to Voiceover volume you can then hit the same three keys and down to lower or up to raise the volume ov voiceover. Re: VO Volume problem on the 5S
I had this problem initially. The volume was loud initially, but once I turned it down below 35% it would not go above that. I reverted to factory settings and among other things, that restored my VO volume. I then removed the volume slider from my rotor and its been fine ever since. I'm afraid to test this on IOS 7.04 because of what one must go through to restore the volume on a 5S once its been reduced. The down side of course is that VO blasts while on calls. I hope VO doesn't become the orphan child of IOS as has happened in the MACOSX world. Best regards. Someone on a different list that I am on pointed out that the iPad mini has the same issue with the volume for VO. So perhaps it has to do with the new a seven chip. I'm sure they've got lots of reports on it, and I trust it will get fixed. Re: volume
Hi Linda, If your wired keyboard is the Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad, then the Fn key is the top leftmost key in the six-pack of keys to the right of the delete key.Someone on another list described this as the location of the Insert key on a Windows keyboard. You should be able to verify this by turning on keyboard help mode (Control+Option+K) and pressing that key, which is to the right of the delete key and under the F13 key. Press the escape key in the top left corner of the keyboard to exit VoiceOver's Keyboard help mode. I also use Mac laptops, but I used the iKeyboard app that lets me pair my laptop to an iPhone or iPad, and use it as a Bluetooth keyboard for that device. Although I normally would just type on my keyboard, I can also navigate through an extended keyboard GUI window to access additional keys, and I checked the position of the Fn key this way. (For those list members familiar with the Type2Phone app that has a similar function, this is different from the way that app Type2 just records your keystrokes when you type.) HTH. Does anybody have a strategy of increasing the volume of Youtube pages. Even at maximum volume on the iMac the playback is too quiet. Re: Increase volume in Youtube
Well, I guess I owe some people an apology. I cannot seem to find it on the website. But has anyone ever thought about using a program such as Mactubes, Which I know has a dedicated slider? I personally do not use this often as I use apps on my phone, but it can work. It may not appear accessible at first but if you enable help tags and all that stuff it can be made usable. Re: renaming a volume
Simply hit enter on a volume to rename it. For example if a volume on the list when you hit cmd shift c comes up as {adc4afe2!a2untiled} or something like that just hit enter, rename it and hit enter. Take care. Re: Volume when using Skype on iPhone 3GS
Please keep in mind that Mac-Access is an iOS OS X group; Windows Discussion is strictly off topic and will no longer be tolerated. Granted, I have never tried Skype on a 3 anything, only on a 4, 4s, and 5, I never once have had the issue that you described. ok, this is gonna sound like an incredibly stupid question, shoot me with a pistil for asking, LOL! but seriously, you do! realize, don't you, that the audio is getting rerouted to your earpiece that you hold up to your ear, and not through the loud speaker. So, if you're holding the phone away from your ear after placing a call, then, no wonder it's so quiet. Yeah, you can toggle it once in a call to the loud speaker, but by default, it won't be set there. Aside from this question, I have no idea. Is Skype even fully compatible with the 3GS phones? Re: Volume when using Skype on iPhone 3GS
Please keep in mind that Mac-Access is an iOS OS X group; Windows Discussion is strictly off topic and will no longer be tolerated. As for the video part of it with the camera, down at the very bottom of the screen when you're in an active call are a few buttons. One of them will say something like start video. If you double tap this, it'll turn on the front facing camera. I'm not sure if you can flip it to the back facing. I don't think you can, but don't quote me. I don't normally use the video part of Skype when on my phone. NOw, on the mac itself, that's a different sotry. I use the web cam eye sight all the time, that is, unless I'm not fully dressed. LOL, which is very rare if ever. As for getting it to the speaker phone, same principle. Down at the bottom with all the buttons going across the screen while in the call, you'll see a handset button. If you double tap on this, then directly virtically above this button will be a fwew options that will pop up. So if you then just move your finger directly above, as I don't think you can flick to them until you've landed pon one of them, you should see handset, speaker, then bluetooth handset, provided you have one pared and connected. If you don't, then you won't see the BT option at all. Just double tap on speaker, and there you go. Keep in mind that once the call ends, it's gonna go back to earpiece regardless. There's no way that I know to set it to always default to speaker. Chris Gilland. Please keep in mind that Mac-Access is an iOS OS X group; Windows Discussion is strictly off topic and will no longer be tolerated. Paul, I wrote a more descriptive response a second ago, but basically look at the bottom of the screen. There is a button down there that will say hand set. If you double tap it, then look directly above that icon, you'll see an option to then toggle it to speaker. Just know that as soon as the call ends, it's gonna go back to the ear piece. On another note Paul, you say you have hearing aides. I have possibly two options for you regarding that. Actually 3 options. First of all, do your aides have the T-Coil switch on them? If so, flip that on and see if that helps when putting the phone to your ear. Are your hearing aides bluetooth compatible as some are? If so, try paring them to the phone as then you definitely! won't have to worry about volume issues. Finally, on the phone, go under settings, general, accessibility, then double tap on hearing aides. I'm not totally sure what that option does being I'm still waiting to get my aides, as the states gonna be funding them for me, but anyway... it may be worth looking in there just in case there is something that may help you out. It's just a thought. Chris Gilland. Re: Volume when using Skype on iPhone 3GS
Please keep in mind that Mac-Access is an iOS OS X group; Windows Discussion is strictly off topic and will no longer be tolerated. As for me as I don't use hearing aids but Im starting to loose the sharpness of sounds, is there anything I can do besides volume to adjust the eq of skype to make it not sound like mumbling? So your explanation of why the sound volume is so low is probably correct. You say that I can toggle the sound of the phone call to use the phone speaker. How to I do that? Many thanks. Re: volume in safari
As far as I know, the only way to change the volume in Safari is to change system volume. You can do this by pressing fn f11 to decrease and fn f12 to increase. This will change the voice over volume however so by pressing vo command left or right arrow, you can get to the voice over volume which will say Volume and then press vo command up or down arrow to increase or decrease the voice over volume independent of the system volume. Increasing volume on Podcasts
I have Changed subject line. Just for information the Mac version of Mp3Gain is free, and completely accessible with Voiceover under Lion at least. Someone who has ML could test it I guess. I routinely run Mp3Gain on mp3 files that I need to increase the volume of. In particular I find Calibre audio books often too quiet as well as Podcasts. It is better if the original is not too quiet I agree but it is an option. I also use if I have made a recording and I have not been able to get that close to the person talking for example. Occasionally there will just be certain words that aren't in it's dictionary, and you will have to slowly type and add these in. Or certain long, and complicated words will better be entered if you carefully find the first few letters, then revert to just guessing the positions of the other letters. I think the current version is not really optimized for the iPad, and you'll find if you explore the keyboard that the layout of the Fleksy keyboard occupies a much larger portion of the screen than you're used to using, so you have to exaggerate the placement of the keys in your touch gestures to use this at present. HTH. Cheers, Esther On Jul 28, 2012, at 11:42 AM, Dennis Freedman wrote: Hi Gordon I hope you got my text message about the Podcast that David Bridgewood did, but I'm sure you'll find it if not. Thanks to all, their replies were concise and should give you everything you need. But, having been there myself, perhaps a bit more explanation is needed, with apologies to others on the list. I think it's the concept that is strange until you actually use it. After pressing the Home button three times to turn VoiceOver off, you have to imagine the blank screen is an invisible keyboard. Place your fingers where you think the qwerty keys home row should be, and, if you're a touch typist, go from there using all your fingers. I find it easier in Landscape mode so lock Fleksy in Landscape via the Fleksy Settings dialog in the main Settings app. But I know people who use Fleksy with only one or two fingers, 'guessing' roughly where the qwerty keys would be. So you've turned VoiceOver off, got Fleksy in either Portrait or Landscape mode according to your preference. You can check you've got it right using the fact that a left flick will tell you there's no text to delete. (If the keyboard's the wrong way round, turn it round till a left flick boings at you to show no more text to delete). Decide on whether you're going to actually touch type or use one or two fingers. Use a word like 'bananas' as it's a good pattern to start with. With the bottom edge of the IPhone near you, imagine the Home row a little way up. So the B A N A N A s will be easy for you to imagine. Just press where you think the B will be (bottom row, nearly at the halfway point on the left side of the row), then tap the place as on a typewriter keyboard and immediately lift your finger off the key. You won't get feedback but should here a slight keyclick. (I do find I have to have volume turned up when typing in a noisy environment). Now type the other keys - quicker I find is better. So A over to the left but a little higher as it would be on the Home row. N back on where

I also have a 90% hearing loss so and - through these headphones - my iPhone/iPod can barely be heard by me at normal volume levels given out by these devices. I paid $25.00 for this amplifier and that to me is well worth the money. For Australian customers you can find the amp at http://www.warcom.com.au/products/20124_fiio_e1_earphone_volume_booster_amp lifier_for_iphone_white For those living outside Australia? I'm not sure whether the online shop at the above link wil ship internationally but give them a try, I've found Warcom pretty good to deal with. Possibly Dane misheard my reference to RNID, that is , Royal National Institute for the Deaf and thought I was talking about than RNIB - Royal National Institute of blind People. I find it hard to hear the difference with a Screenreader myself. I know RNID have changed their name to something like Action on Hearing but I could not remember what it was. This is why I used their old name and possibly confused people. Re: Earphone Volume Booster Amplifier For iPhone
Hello Glenn Whilst others may or may not agree with your comments, it really is to each their own. Also, let's try to stay on topic. We're now at risk of debating the wisdom or otherwise of headphones which really isn't what this list is intended to be used for. Dane's perfectly entitled to his views and so are you. But his intention was, I think, merely to inform those interested that an iPhone amplifier exists. :) Please don't consider this in any way a repremand; merely an attempt to keep us on topic. Re: Earphone Volume Booster Amplifier For iPhone
Yep, you're speculating there, its not that loud smile, the idea of the amp is for those headphones which aren't designed for use with an IOS device. For example take a pair of good quality hi-fi headphones, as a rule they're not sensitive given the fact the hi-fi amps usually have a lot of grunt when it comes to the headphone output whereas IOS devices do not. onot On 19/04/2012, at 12:20 PM, Glenn wrote: I've often speculated that such amplifiers contribute to yet even further hearing loss, like loud headphones can damage the hearing of someone with normal hearing, it seems to me that it would do similar damage to someone with hearing loss. Boosting Volume on an IOS device using headphones
Hi everyone! I have to admit to being in Suspense Mode today. I'm receiving a Headphone amp in the mail which I ordered. This device plugs into the dock of your IOS device and you then plug a pair of headphones into the amp. Why would anyone need such a device? Well the advert states that many good quality headphones and earbuds are not too sensitive thus some amplification may be required. I can certainly understand where the company who make this amp are coming from here though it also fell to my knowledge that this amp may help those who have a hearing impairment? We'll see later on today, I'll get back to the list with a summary of what the device does etc. I'm didn't waste too much money in the purchase of this amp, it was a Clearance item at an online shop I regularly visit, total cost was $25.00 Australian. Adjusting VoiceOver speaker volume [was Re: Using the iPhone 4S without earphones_]
Hi Mike and Ian, Mike responded before I could, but his statement is correct: the volume of VoiceOver through the speaker and the volume for other audio sources playing through the speaker are set separately on the iPhone. If it happens that for some reason the volume for VoiceOver has dropped through the speakers, just start VoiceOver speaking -- for example, by doing a two finger flick up to read all the contents of the current screen -- and use the volume up controls at the side of the iPhone to increase VoiceOver's volume through the speaker while VoiceOver is speaking. You don't need to reset or turn off and then power up your phone to do this. You simply need to make sure that VoiceOver is speaking when you perform the volume up adjustments. HTH. Finally, while holding the volume up key, after unplugging the earphones, I just started randomly touching the screen to make VO talk. All of a sudden, I started hearing the speaker. This leads me to conclude that the external speaker volume is independent from the earphone volume. Perhaps this will help someone else, too. Re: Adjusting VoiceOver speaker volume [was Re: Using the iPhone 4Swithout earphones_]
You'll find that the volume will randomly drop -- some times the change is probably attributable to an inadvertent holding of the volume down key. Still, I suspect there may be a bug somewhere. For example, when I pull my phone out of a dock, the speaker volume may be all the way down. If the remedy you discovered does not work, and no sound other than ringtones is emitted from your speaker, there may be a dust particle caught in the headphone jack. This would cause the microswitch to remain open and consequently your hardware behaves as though headphones are connected regardless. When this occurs, you can usually dislodge the obstruction by inserting and withdrawing headphones into your jack about ten times quickly. A vacuum or canned air would also do the trick. I have not yet experienced this problem on my 4S, but assume the hardware is unchanged and hence that possibility still exists, so its something to bare in mind. Best regards. Re: 4s VO volume
Hi Roger! As far as I know you cannot do that! Apple in there wisdom have decided to make vo that way on the Iphones! The best suggestion is to use headphones and you'll be able to hear vo ok! Yes I know you might not want to use headphones all the time but that is your best bet! Re: 4s VO volume
It's a bug actually. I know some connections up there at hq and they are very aware of it and hopefully will have it fixed. That's all I can say on the matter. Take care. How do you adjust latest Chromevox volume?
Hi all, I have installed the latest version of the Chromevox extension in Google Chrome. I haven't been able to figure out how to adjust the speech volume. I am using a full-sized Apple keyboard with a numpad running an iMac with Lion. Thanks.
