I tried walking her through disabling DHCP and
manually
setting an IP to disable BootP. I think she got
DHCP turned off but might still have BootP going on
the JetDirect.

BootP works pretty much like DHCP, except for if you
have a BootP server you can manually assign IPs to
devices by MAC address. Then you can sit at one
console and change all IPs on your network. DHCP
assigns IPs on a first come, first served basis.

Could download and install Web JetAdmin and do the
configuration in a friendly GUI environment, but
IIRC, you have to setup at least one print queue
and do some other things, so it's actually more
work than using Telnet.

Telnet is very useful. You can run the Telnet server
that comes with Windows XP (in XP Pro, dunno about
Home) then with a Telnet client on the Mac you can
run things on the PC.

'Course you can also do that with VNC (Virtual Network
Computing). That's freeware which puts the other
system's desktop in a window and you can use the mouse
and keyboard remotely. VNC runs on many platforms and
is fully cross-operational amongst most of them.

I think Gretchen may have more luck with static
addresses than dhcp. So much easier for all the
reasons I've explained before.

Thanks for the run down on the Marknet pro, good to
know they both do appletalk.

Re: Yet another Windows/Mac printing problem!

2004-02-15 Thread Michael Clarke
Nah, no waste!

Yeah, the information on that link is incorrect. Both the Marknet Pro 1 & 3
support AppleTalk.

I have the Marknet set up with a static IP address and an AppleTalk address.
I use the MarkVision software on the PC (Win XP) to connect to the printer,
and AppleTalk on the Mac (OS 9.2.2).

I've never worked with AppleTalk before, so that's where the "relatively"
easy part came in. At first, I couldn't connect to the print server via the
Mac, but I went into the AppleTalk control panel and changed the network
portion of the AppleTalk address to match the network number that the
Marknet was configured with. I was then able to add the LaserJet printer to
my desktop using the Chooser and the LaserWriter 8 driver.

Gretchen, sorry I can't be of more assistance with the PC part of this.
I'll look at how we're connecting to the print servers at work to see if I
can come back with any helpful info. Don't give up yet!

Mike

No proprietary software is *required* to setup a
JetDirect, just knowing how to reset the defaults
then it can be configured with nothing more than a
telnet client. However, for Windows there is the
Network Printer Install Wizard to automatically set
your network printer settings and Web JetAdmin for
configuring the JetDirect. It can even provide much
of the same internet printing abilities that newer
JetDirects with a built in web server have, for the
older ones like the EX Plus series. 'Course to do
that you need to use a PC with internet access on your
LAN as the internet printing gateway.

For the Mac side, if the printer and JetDirect are
setup properly and the Mac drivers for the printer
are installed, the printer should show up in the
Chooser or whatever OSX has instead of the Chooser.

I don't know what kind of setup HP has with the JetDirect, but the Lexmark
uses proprietary software to connect to the print server via tcp/ip. I'm
sure you can also connect by creating a tcp/ip printer port on the PC, but I
didn't have much luck with that option. I hate having to install 3rd party
software to do something that should be native to the OS, but like you, I
was tired of messing around with it.

Which isn't really a problem since your using tcp?

How have you set it up? a static address or it all works fine in with
a dhcp setup? Interesting thing about appletalk is it will go places
badly configured tcp wont and also through half rate firewalls. ;)

I'll stick to my nix box for use as a print-server. I've almost made
enough mistakes to know what I'm doing.
File and printer sharing is a administrators job, with that in mind
simple and (relatively) quick is good enough for mine.

Gretchen should only need tcp, once filesharing is working both ways
the printer (atleast one) will follow, samba only requires a few ports
open accross the lan to do both. These ports are blocked by default by
most nix and need to be opened manually, I'd guess OS X does a better

Hi
Not much help here I'm afraid.
I only have NT4 but I will hook a printer up to it using Services for
mac if no better answer comes your way.

Are you using the Laserwriter 8 extension or similar? Sorry this may
not be helpful, my knowledge of printers is limited to the few I have.
In this case I can setup a printer server using Pcmaclan and
ghostscript so I can use share the HP 850c Deskjet. I imagine any
other would be the same under Win2k3.

If the HP 850 is something like what you have I will try to share it
from the Alpha (x8 the HDD space and happily running SFM under NT4,
thanks for the tip Gregg!) which still has the noisiest and largest
cooling fan I have ever found. The one in the bathroom looks like it

Ghostscript is yet another way to share printers to the classic macOS
and I imagine the new world MacOS? Who knows?

As you can share files I'd guess you are half way there.

The file sharing part works fine. My Mac is a Wallstreet running OS 9.2.2,
but that¹s not even an issue yet, because I can¹t get the LaserJet to
magically turn into an AppleTalk print device!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
