I was quite surprised but happy with the voice for the ipod 16gig 4th gen

Hello Søren and Pierre,

Yes, you're right. No one has a choice of voice at login. I tried all
possibilities this morning on a computer which I set up from scratch in
French and the voice was still Alex.

This would change if Apple provided a basic voice in every language into
which VoiceOver is localised.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Scott and Pierre,

I remember that with the Leopard upgrade the default voice (until you
actually finished the upgrade) was Fred. I've only used the different voice
options earlier with VisioVoice (in French) and Tiger, and I don't run my
Leopard account with a different language localization. Tiger's support was
more restrictive. I thought that you could boot up your system in Leopard
starting with another voice, but I haven't tried this myself. I guess my
question to Pierre would first be whether the computer was set up with a
default localization in German (for the system, not just his account)?

Anne would probably know whether a startup from scratch works with a voice
other than Alex based on her experience with the French VoiceOver mailing
list that she moderates. Other than that, David Niemeijer at Assistiveware
could probably tell you whether this is possible for a German login voice.
You could send a query to:

supp...@assistiveware.com

or else send a post to the Assistiveware forums. David reads this list, but
a direct email will be faster.

List topic reminders (revision) Please read!…

2009-04-09 Thread Cara Quinn

Hey All, happy THU / FRI! I've made a few slight revisions to the
on / off topic list for MacVisionaries, so I thought I'd post it here
for your reading pleasure. Please do take just a minute or
two to read through this as I believe a couple of points needed
clarifying.

My apologies for being a bit incommunicado for the last few days,
but I've been extremely busy. I'll plan on updating the
MacVisionaries GoogleGroups site by the weekend and when I do I'll let
you all know.

Thanks for reading the below and as usual, if you have any
questions, do feel free to write me at:

caraqu...@caraquinn.com

Have a great day / night, wherever you may be!…

Smiles,

Cara :)

What is Off-topic for MacVisionaries?

• Non-Mac-related postings

• For Sale postings. We're working on a site area(s) for this, so for
the moment, please do keep this sort of thing off the list and email
me privately if you have items for sale.

• One line responses such as 'thank you' 'I agree' or 'Me too.'

• Notes asking for people to follow you on Twitter or be your friend
on FaceBook or other social Networking sites. Including your
Twitter / Facebook etc info in your signatures is fine and even
encouraged.

• Notes asking people to contact you on Skype or asking if you can
contact someone on Skype. If someone needs assistance, please write
them off list or have them write you. We're working on a Skype
directory of users willing to help people, so for now, please keep
this off the list. As in the above, do feel free, however, to include
your Skype / chat info in your signature files if you so choose.

• Notes with no answers in them. I.E. If you're really not sure how
you can help someone with a question they've asked, then simply don't
post. Let someone who does know, or has a good idea help that
person. there's no harm in letting a question rest for a while if
there's no immediate answer.

• Posts asking about list policy, posts asking if your post got
through, or test messages. Do not post these sorts of things to the
list. Write me off-list instead.

What is On-Topic for MacVisionaries?

• Anything Mac-related! :)

• Any questions from new / experienced users regarding anything at all
on their Macs or Apple products.

• Any actual answers to such above questions. If you have a guess,
try it yourself first. If it works, then by all means, post it as an
answer to the list! :)

• Any warnings, or things to avoid doing which cause VO to not speak
or crash. (or cause problems with a user's access tech) Preferably,
it would also be nice to post a work-around for a problem if you know
it.

• Any news articles, Web Sites, or blog entries which are Mac / Apple
related, or that have some 'real' involvement with such. I.E. is
there a real honest connection between the two? Is the item you're
posting really going to interest or impact a Mac / VO user?

• Your own Mac / VO / Apple experiences! Feel free to post anything
that you've experienced or are experiencing (good or bad) having to do
with your Mac use, (with or without VO) your use of Apple products, or
your experiences with Apple or at an Apple store.

• Questions or concerns about a future Mac or Apple purchase. Feel
free to ask anything you like about Apple / Mac before you buy! :)

Re_preview

2009-04-09 Thread Mike

Hi Esther:

Not sure if you got my reply or no but incase not,
Didn't think of the PDF display menu, followed your tips and it
worked, thanks.
Now to another question for the list.
Is there a way of funneling playing audio through a USB snd card while
having VO use the internal snd card?
I'm quite frequently asked to provide music for small gatherings and
I'm thinking how nice it would be to use a usb card for the music
while having VO use the internal with my headset connected.
Of course I'm always asked for requests and I don't think they would
like to hear VO speaking my searches while the music is playing. LOL

THanks again list:

For users who are blind, the built-in VoiceOver screen review software offers a whole new way to use the Mac.This powerful tool offers features such as refreshable Braille support, an extensive help system and reliable access to many popular Macintosh applications. Yeah, I got it work. All you do is interact with the events table, and
go to the add button. After you need to check each box that says speak
event. Hth,

thanks to mark and now alex for replying to me. I did try using vuscan

saying busy when it was running or crashed on me a lot. I tried a few
other programs that i discovered from my search for ocr on
macupdate.com. I have ordered readiris version 11.0 through amazon of
all places so I will be trying that app sometime next week.

Re: iPod has gone corrupted

2009-04-09 Thread Dave Wright
Unfortunately, a reset did not do the job. I would try to reboot the device and
then go in to the restore setting on the iPod with no luck. When I plugged in
the device, I still got the same thing. I could see the device with iTunes,
however, I couldn't readily access the settings area.

Oh, I have an idea of what may be happening.

Do you have the nano? YOu can put it into a restore mode by doing
the following. Without sighted assistance this may be a bit of a challenge.

  1. Hold the select (center of the wheel) and the menu (top of the
wheel) down together for about 10 seconds. Release and hold again if the iPod
does nothing. You should hear a pop in your headphones, or the music your
playing should suddenly cut off. While I'm writing this, that may be the best
way to do it, play something so you know when you have a successful reboot.
  2. Immediately release your command and press instead select and
play/pause together. If you're successful, the resotre screen will show up. In
your case, the best way to know if you've got it right is to wait and see after
about two minutes if running your finger around the click wheel makes clicks.
If it does, you need to start over again, it booted and missed the opportunity
to get into restore mode.
  3. Once in restore mode, connect your iPod to your computer.

Now, your iPod should show up as normal. Restore it from the
settings pane. If not, it for sure will show up in Disk Utility where a restore
can be performed after formatting the internal disk.

You didn't answer one of my questions, got an Apple Store near
where you live? If you're not sure, visit http://www.apple.com/retail and run
through the store listings. There is a quick pop-up where you choose your state
and then choose a store. I don't know where you live, but I'm assuming the
United States. If not, there is a full store listing that includes world wide
locations as well.

 Hello,

Got iTunes 8.1.1? Try that out. Also, you could reformat the iPod
which will force it into recovery mode and really force a
restore. I've done that one once, but it was a last resort
thought right before running out to get a new one. Also, Genius
bar could probably help if you bring the computer and the iPod.
Got a Genius bar newar you?

Accessibility issue for Restore [was Re: iPod has gone corrupted]

2009-04-09 Thread Esther
Hi Dave and Ryan,

I think we may have come across an accessibility issue. Basically,
when you force the iPod into the restore condition the pane where the
iPods Setting scroll area appears becomes inaccessible to VoiceOver.
That's why Dave couldn't VO-Right arrow or tab there. I just managed
to inadvertently get my iPod Nano 4G into this mode when I tried to
find out whether I could reset the Nano 4G just pressing with my
fingers (turns out that I can, but I did this while the Nano was
connected to the USB port, and it had the unexpected result of forcing
my iPod into recovery mode, even though it was trouble-free!). Due to
the VoiceOver feature of copying last phrase to the clipboard (VO-
Shift-C) I have a record of what happened. More importantly, I
couldn't get to the "Restore" button except by turning Mouse Keys On
and moving down from the Cover Flow View Switcher Radio Button until
the Restore button was under my mouse when I checked with VO-F5. On
my MacBook that took 340 down presses, I think.

So when I reset my Nano while it was connected I got a got a dialog
window:

iTunes needs to download the recovery software for your iPod. Please
leave your iPod connected. Your iPod will restart automatically after
the recovery software has been downloaded.

Then:

iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode. You must restore this
iPod before it can be used with iTunes.

A newer version of the iPod software has been downloaded (version
1.0.3). Would you like to restore with the newest version?
You may also choose to restore with the same version as your iPod has
now (version 1.0.2).

(This last was very strange, since I had version 1.0.3 on my iPod --
that was the version that finally allowed us to turn off Cover Flow.)

Button options were Cancel, Use Same Version, or Use Newest Version.
I chose to Use Newest Version.

At this point I got the dialog:

Are you sure you want to restore the iPod “iPod” to its factory
settings? All of your media and other data will be erased.

So, I said OK here, since all of my files and playlists are backed up.

At this point I get a new dialog window where I have to authorize this
with my password:

iTunes requires that you type your password. Authentication Secure
Edit Text

I type in my password, and I get the message:

Your iPod has been restored to factory settings, and is restarting.
Please leave your iPod connected. It will appear in the iTunes window
after it restarts. This message will be dismissed in 10 seconds.

At this point I hit Dave's problem: There's no settings window to
navigate to with VoiceOver. Tabbing, VO-Right arrow, VO-Down arrow,
doesn't get me anywhere. It turns out that there is a window with a
Restore button, but there's no way to navigate there. But, it turns
out that someone with sighted access to the page can tell you that the
restore button is almost directly below the Cover Flow View Switcher
Radio Button. So I go to that button with VoiceOver, move my mouse
cursor to that button (VO-Command-F5), read it's position with VO-F5,
turn on MouseKeys in the Universal Access Window so I can move the
mouse with key presses (without using VoiceOver), turn off cursor
tracking with VO-Shift-F3 and arrow down by tapping the "K" key on my
MacBook. It takes about 340 down presses while I periodically check
with VO-F5 until I hear that the Restore button is under my mouse. I
press it (with the trackpad of my MacBook), turn cursor tracking back
on (VO-Shift-F3) and turn MouseKeys off. VO-F5 pressed once tells me
what is under the mouse, pressed twice tells me the x and y screen
pixel location of my cursor, and pressed three times (which I don't
use), tells me the x and y pixel location of my cursor relative to the
window origin. So when I reach the "Restore" button I'll hear that it
is under the Mouse with VO-F5.

I get the "Set Up Your iPod" window, and proceed as though this were a
new setup.

The iPod is not identified (even though it's still connected) in the
sources table until I manage to press the "Restore" button. I think
it's rare that you'll need to get to restore where the device isn't
recognized in iTunes, but we've just seen this can happen.

In Dave's case, maybe the reset will work. If the device is seen in
iTunes (or if he can open if by using VO-backslash in the sources
table and navigate the contents), it should be OK.

HTH. I now also find that the sync status window (VO-Up Arrow twice
from the iPod Settings window after you
stop interacting) has a "stop" button so I don't need to let this try
to sync everything in my library. I can just stop it and point it to
my own transfer playlist.

Cheers,

Esther

Oh, I have an idea of what may be happening.

Do you have the nano? YOu can put it into a restore mode by doing the
following.

Restore it from the settings
pane. If not, it for sure will show up in Disk Utility where a restore can be
performed after formatting the internal disk.

You didn't answer one of my questions, got an Apple Store near where
you live? If you're not sure, visit http://www.apple.com/retail and run through
the store listings. There is a quick pop-up where you choose your state and
then choose a store. I don't know where you live, but I'm assuming the United
States. If not, there is a full store listing that includes world wide
locations as well.

  Hello,

Got iTunes 8.1.1? Try that out. Also, you could reformat the iPod
which will force it into recovery mode and really force a restore. I've done
that one once, but it was a last resort thought right before running out to get

Hi Peggy,

It's actually the top and center of the wheel that you need to press
simultaneously. This is somewhat unintuitive, so I had to check the
manual again:

To reset iPod nano:
1 Toggle the Hold switch on and off (slide it to HOLD and then back
again).
2 Press and hold the Menu and Center buttons for at least 6 seconds,
until the
Apple logo appears.

The menu button is at the top of the wheel. I'm glad you got things
working. Did the instructions I sent off list of using VO-Up arrow
twice to get to the sync field information work for you?

Cheers,

Esther

In the nano fourth gen. you press down on the top and the bottom of
the wheel simultaniously for six seconds then wait about ten seconds
counting slowly and press the middle of the wheel. There is no audio
feedback for this. My husband did it last night when my Ipod crashed

Yes, you're right. No one has a choice of voice at login. I tried all

This would change if Apple provided a basic voice in every language into

  Hi Scott and Pierre,

I remember that with the Leopard upgrade the default voice (until you
actually finished the upgrade) was Fred. I've only used the different voice
options earlier with VisioVoice (in French) and Tiger, and I don't run my
Leopard account with a different language localization. Tiger's support was
more restrictive. I thought that you could boot up your system in Leopard
starting with another voice, but I haven't tried this myself. I guess my
question to Pierre would first be whether the computer was set up with a
default localization in German (for the system, not just his account)?

Anne would probably know whether a startup from scratch works with a
voice other than Alex based on her experience with the French VoiceOver mailing
list that she moderates. Other than that, David Niemeijer at Assistiveware
could probably tell you whether this is possible for a German login voice. You
could send a query to:

  supp...@assistiveware.com

or else send a post to the Assistiveware forums. David reads this
list, but a direct email will be faster.

Oh, I have an idea of what may be happening.

Do you have the nano? YOu can put it into a restore mode by doing the
following. Without sighted assistance this may be a bit of a challenge.

  1. Hold the select (center of the wheel) and the menu (top of the wheel)
down together for about 10 seconds. Release and hold again if the iPod does
nothing. You should hear a pop in your headphones, or the music your playing
should suddenly cut off. While I'm writing this, that may be the best way to do
it, play something so you know when you have a successful reboot.

Restore it from the settings
pane. If not, it for sure will show up in Disk Utility where a restore can be
performed after formatting the internal disk.

You didn't answer one of my questions, got an Apple Store near where you
live? If you're not sure, visit http://www.apple.com/retail and run through the
store listings. There is a quick pop-up where you choose your state and then
choose a store. I don't know where you live, but I'm assuming the United
States. If not, there is a full store listing that includes world wide
locations as well.

  Hello,

Got iTunes 8.1.1? Try that out. Also, you could reformat the iPod
which will force it into recovery mode and really force a restore. I've done
that one once, but it was a last resort thought right before running out to get
a new one. Also, Genius bar could probably help if you bring the computer and
the iPod. Got a Genius bar newar you?

Re: iPod has gone corrupted

2009-04-09 Thread Dave Wright
Good morning ester,
Thank you for your advice thus far. I've currently got the Nano 4G. As for the
settings, I really don't understand it. I've tried VO arrowing to the right of
the vertical splitter and cannot see any area to interact with for settings, so
I can't even access the restore button. I'll attempt to use the steps you
mentioned for performing a reset to see if that works. Thus far, I've tried
rebooting the device with no results. I really don't want to take this to the
genius bar if I don't have to.

  Hi Dave,

Reformatting is done in iTunes. I've never had my iPod settings window
completely disappear, but I'd guess this is like setting up the new Nano 4G
from scratch -- the area is reached by doing a VO-Right arrow from the sources
table past the splitter to an area that originally shows up as "unknown", and
you have to interact with it in order to see things. When the settings menu
doesn't disappear there is a button to restore or reformat the iPod that you
press (VO-Space). What model iPod do you have? The other thing that I've done
(with my Nano 4G) was look at it when connected in Finder. The files are
normally hidden, but I had changed this with one of my maintenance facility
tools. (I wanted to see where the spoken menu snippets were stored, and found
I could QuickLook them). You could also try resetting your iPod before
reconnecting. Exactly how you do this will depend on your iPod model, but it
usually involves toggling the hold switch on and off (on the Nano this means
you push it to the right, away from the left edge of the iPod to the locked
position, and then back to the left to the unlocked position), and then
pressing the menu (12-o'clock position on the wheel) and select (center of the
wheel) buttons simultaneously. This is hard to do with your fingers on
something as small as the Nano; I had to put it on a flat surface and use
either a small screwdriver or a pen or pencil to press down on each point and
hold it down for several seconds to reset. There's nothing audible about this.
(I had to do this on the older 1G model Nano; I've never had to reset my 4G
Nano.)

Once again, the reformatting is handled in iTunes, not in Disk Utility.

  Cheers,

  Esther

Re: Preview Question...

2009-04-09 Thread Esther

Hi Mike,

I haven't seen this problem before in Preview. What happens if you
set the PDF Display mode to single page? VO-M to the menu bar, press
"v" to go to the View menu, arrow down and press "p" to go to PDF
Display, then right arrow to the PDF Display submenu and select
"Single Page" instead of the default "Single Page Continous"? This
basically reverts you to reading one page at a time, and using
Commmand-right arrow to go to the next page when you reach the end
(e.g., the same way Preview worked in Tiger). I'm curious about
whether this mis-positioning still happens when you force Preview to
read page by page.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Preview Question...

2009-04-09 Thread Jesper Holten

Hi Mike.
I am not aware of a solution on the mac. but the same problem can occur in
windows sometimes. Especially if you convert the pdf file directly to text
format from adobe reader.
Not to say hereby, that there is no solution on the mac, but just to say
that I have seen the same thing on windows machines.

Best regards, Jesper.

I've upgraded to the latest version of iTunes and still cannot see the settings
area. How would I go about getting my iPod to show up in disc utilities in
order to perform a reformat? I'm guessing that when you performed a reformat,
everything worked out ok? Did you just do a quick erase, or did you zero out

  Hello,

Got iTunes 8.1.1? Try that out. Also, you could reformat the iPod which will
force it into recovery mode and really force a restore. I've done that one
once, but it was a last resort thought right before running out to get a new
one. Also, Genius bar could probably help if you bring the computer and the
iPod. Got a Genius bar newar you?

Preview Question...

2009-04-09 Thread Mike

Hi all:

I'm in the process of reading a 500 plus page book in PDF format.
I'm using preview for this but I'm encountering a slight prob.
When moving from page to page, VO is announcing the bottom half of the
previously read page before reading the next page I want to hear.
I have set in my preferences to use logical page #s and so on plus
scaling. I have attempted to turn vo tracking off to see if that
helped and it didn't.
Bringing thepage to full screen doesn't help either.

TNX:

Re: Changing voice of login window

2009-04-09 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Søren and Pierre,

Yes, you're right. No one has a choice of voice at login. I tried all
possibilities this morning on a computer which I set up from scratch
in French and the voice was still Alex.

This would change if Apple provided a basic voice in every language
into which VoiceOver is localised.

Cheers,

Anne

This is weird. It doesn't work for me either. I think this is because
