Re: Safari frusterations!

Do you use Dom or Groups Mode? I use Dom. I interact, but I'm sure I'm doing
something wrong because I see a list of questions, and then the radio buttons,
after them. I use Vo/left and right arrows. I do remember one that did work
correctly for some reason, www.jobdango.com. It's our local job search site.
It's been about the only one I've had luck with. thanks.

cannot get the functionality that I find necearry to complete my work and
university assignments. For example last night I was searching for
information on a pelit stove that I am working on. I found a good and very
informative site, however the mouse over functions were completely crazy.
Nothing was folloing a sequence that I could replicate, finally just by
clicking on every mouse over on the page all of the information was
displayed. I went into windows and discovered that the site was solid.
This is only one event. I very frequently find that this is occurring even
in google of all places. Many times the heading hot key does not function
properly. Can you tell me if you guys are running into similar
frustrations? I find similar troubles with the need for a good word
processor and spreadsheet application. I will not go into details right

I'm having no problems thus far. There is a long jpeg labeled button you need
to hit after you hit the zipcode or address. That's as far as I got but

Re: java in safari on or off for different sites

2010-10-03 Thread Mike Arrigo
You should not have to disable java for pages to work, this could indicate a
problem with something else. Are you talking about java itself or java script,
they are 2 different things. Many pages use java script, but very few pages
that I know of actually use java, as in a java application.

Re: #ot configuring network settings with D-Link Extreme?

You need to find out what the default ip address is fr the router, different
routers have different default ip addresses. Google should be able to help
here. Once you know the address, enter that in your browser and it should work.

Re: help with navigation in html tables

2010-10-03 Thread Mike Arrigo
Usually, once in the table, you use the VO left, right, up and down keys to
move in the expected direction. There is a voice over setting that determines
whether you need to interact with a table, usually you would want that disabled.

Re: jumping to next line of text with voiceover?

2010-10-03 Thread Mike Arrigo
There is no way to move forward and back a line at a time when doing a
continuous read. I thought you meant that when you stop reading, your cursor is
close to the last thing spoken. That wrks in a word processor if you interact
with the text first. On the web, there really is no concept of lines the way
the windows screen readers think of them, you move by item.

Re: voiceover manual for IOS4?

2010-10-03 Thread Esther

Hi Erik,

There are two places to check for a manual on the iPod Touch. First,
there should be an iPod Touch User's Guide listed under the Safari
bookmarks of your iPod Touch. If you synched your bookmarks and
overrode the default definitions you can add the URL:

http://help.apple.com/ipodtouch/
to your bookmarked locations (you only need to type in "help.apple.com/
ipodtouch/" and this address only works from an iPhone or iPod Touch.
Anywhere else (on an iPad, or on your computer), you'll be taken to
the Apple Support pages where you can find some link to a PDF version
of the user guides.

The more useful accessible HTML version of the iPhone User Guide (that
you can access from anywhere) is at:

http://help.apple.com/iphone/4/voiceover/
(There's no special accessible HTML version for just the parts that
works for the iPod Touch)

Also, note the AppleVis web site for more information:
http://applevis.com/

A nice summary of the iOS 4 Apple Keyboard shortcuts may be found at:
http://www.hllf.net/70
if you use a Bluetooth keyboard with your iPod Touch.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

java in safari on or off for different sites

2010-10-03 Thread Claus Thøgersen

Hi,

I have a strange problem with Java in Safari.
On some pages I need to have java enabled in order to use the page.
However if Java is enabled I have other pages that will not work, Safari
just seems to try to load the page without success.

the problem on these pages is solved by disabling java.
Is there a java setting I can change to make java work on all sites, or a
way to enable java on specific sites?

I have no English language pages where I have the problem with java enabled,
and other Danish users have no problems on the pages that I cannot access
with java enabled, very strange!

Washington Post articles?

2010-10-03 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I am currently having problems in both webkit and Safari with the Washington
Post web site.

from http://washingtonpost.com
I click on "Metro" and then "Virginia POlitics"

The site which I believe is
voices.washingtonpost.com/VirginiaPolitics never fully load. Before reporting
this to Apple and/or Washington Post, could somebody else see if this site
works for them?

I had no issues earlier this week, but I have changed a couple of settings
within my Post login. So I am curious if it is the site in general or my
changes.

Best regards,

Jon

Re: searching a hard drive

2010-10-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
command-space can mean a few things:

1. Do a general search in spotlight. (this is what you are thinking of)
2. Switch keyboard internationalization
3. run launcher app if present.
For this reason, and also because one can not directly navigate to
options to customize the search I recommended the finder method.

I thought that cmd option space also brings up the search but I could be mixing

Re: searching a hard drive

2010-10-03 Thread Esther

Hi Louie,

Jonathan's answer works (sorry, I was interrupted in typing my answer;
I checked there wasn't a reply before I started). The only thing I
would add is that you might want to navigate to the hard drive (or
folder on the hard drive) that you want to limit your search to
between steps 2 and 3. If you start at a specific location before you
do your search with Command+F (which works as does Command+Option+F),
one of the options to refine the search will let you select just that
location. HTH.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: searching a hard drive

2010-10-03 Thread Esther

Hi Louie,

How do you want to do the search? You could do it in Terminal with
the "find" command after moving to the a particular hard drive's
folder (or the top level) with the "cd" command, or you could do this
in Finder through the GUI. As I recall, you asked about searching a
specific folder for a file with a particular extension once before.
You can handle searches of a specific hard drive the same way: just
start by navigating to either the top level of a hard drive or a
specific folder of that hard drive in Finder. You can do that by
selecting the hard drive under "Devices" in the Finder sidebar, or
using the Command+Shift+G "Go to Folder" shortcut and typing in the
path to the mounted hard drive or specific folder under that drive
(e.g. "/Volumes/"), or by navigating down to a
specific attached drive from your finder window (starting from the
shortcut to go to the top level for your computer, Command+Shift+C).
To check whether your Finder preferences are set up to display
external disks in your sidebar; bring up your preferences in Finder
with Command+comma and navigate to "Sidebar". There will be a list of
items under "Show these items in the Sidebar" with check boxes. If
"External Disks" is checked under the list of devices, you'll be able
to select and navigate to your external hard drive from the Finder
sidebar. VO+Space on the check box entry if you want to check (or
uncheck) this option. Even if you don't choose the convenience of
displaying the drives in your Finder sidebar, you can always navigate
down to a hard drive, or to a specific folder under the hard drive, by
starting with Command+Shift+C.

Once you've selected the hard drive you want to search, use Command
+Option+F to move to the search field and type in your search terms.
Then VO+Right Arrow to refine your search results (e.g., whether
matches are to "This Mac" or to your selected folder/hard drive) and
add in any other search criteria (file type, extension, etc.) I'm
being sketchy here, but you can go back and read the archived post
answer to your earlier question here for the details:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg05636.html
(Re: searching)

Or, if you wanted to do the search from terminal, you could first
change to the folder you want and then use the find command with
regular expression wild cards. For example:

cd /Volumes/Crucial/Documents
find . -name \*.doc > temp && open -e temp

The first command changes your directory to a folder named "Documents"
on an external drive (this is on my Crucial USB memory stick). The
second command finds all files with a name ending in ".doc" in that
directory or any subdirectories of that directory, and writes the
result to a file named "temp" that I'm using as a temporary file.
The two ampersands separate that command on the line with the second
command that only gets executed when the first command successfully
completes. The "open -e temp" displays matches to my search by
opening the file named "temp" in my default editor (TextEdit). So a
TextEdit window pops up listing the pathnames to matching files from
my search.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Sarah,
So far here is what I have received from apple about drag & droping.
It works in Leopard I know this because I use it every day on my G5.
On my Mac Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 It is currently broken.
But I have heard of some people on the list using it in various
applications.

 i think.
as of now for my needs its whacked out!!!

Let them know @ apple about this and may be it will get fixed
quicker.

Below is the response from apple about drag & drop.

Good morning Chuck,

I heard back from engineering this morning and they are currently
aware of some issues when trying to drag and drop items while using
VoiceOver, including the behavior you described. They are currently
looking into how the behavior can be fixed and improved, but
unfortunately we can not provide an ETA for when the changes will be
available. It will be released as a software update to the operating
system once it is complete. If I hear anything further or get an ETA
I will be sure to pass that along to you.

Quick and simple.

In finder:
1. command-N (new window)
2. command-shift-C (View computer)
3. command-F (search)

Once you put some search items into the search screen you will find
check box options on how to search. One of these should be to limit
the search to the selected item.

Note: there is a good chance that step #1 above is not necessary.

Re: Accessible Mac compatible printers: was: Re: Abyy Fine-Reader again

2010-10-03 Thread Scott Howell
Hi Mary,

Just saw your note, but yes, this is a monster. Well what makes it a monster is
the weight and size. The size in height is partially the result of the scanner
sitting on top of the printer. Think of the scanner as being suspended over the
output tray for the printer so you could put your hand all the way through from
front to back. In other words, the scanner forms a bridge over the printer
output tray. So, this adds a good six or eight inches to the height of the
printer. It is a nice looking device. The scanner has a feeder and the control
panel sits in front of the scanner. Below you have the printer, which is at
least 12 inches tall and the whole unit probably weighs in at about 40 to 50
pounds. I cannot recall the exact specs, but the toner cartridges sit in a
slide-out drawer above the paper drawer. There are four cartridges, which make
up the colors and one nice feature is the drum and toner are all in one unit.
So, when it comes time to replace the toner, you pull the cartridge unit and
recycle the entire thing. So, you get the new drum and toner in one
self-contained unit. The printer is pretty good on consuming little power from
what I understand and it does print very nice pictures etc. Yes, this machine
is not cheap, but it is considered a commercial unit such as would be found in
a business. I want to say it is rated for 3,000 pages per month or something
along those lines. There is the 1320 I believe, which is similar, but lower
capacity. It turns out that after a lot of consideration and checking specs, I
would pay more for the CM2320 up front, but the cost per page would be much
less and I would get a bit better machine for the dollar.
If I can provide any other info, let me know.

Hmm, once interacting with the second table in that document, I can move up and
down within a given column using control option up and control option down.
(I'm using Snow Leopard and Safari 5.0.2)

Note that in this case, the table actually falls into two row groups. The first
row group has two columns - one indicating the thread is a sticky announcement,
the other indicating the announcement title. The second row group consists of
normal threads, with the thread title in the third column. If you navigate
straight down from the "Topic" column header, you end up in the sticky
announcement column before eventually hitting the "read" indicator in the
second row group.

Re: help with navigation in html tables

2010-10-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Tables on web pages are most easily navigated when in-group navigation
mode. When you are in group navigation mode and are in a table, then
the arrow / swipe movements move you as you would expect within the
table. You would then have to use the interact function to work more
closely within the contents. There are also a couple of functions on
if you want to specifically have to interact with a table to "see" its
contents.

Best wishes,

Jon

#ot configuring network settings with D-Link Extreme?

2010-10-03 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

Our linksys router broke this week, so we just replaced it with a D-Link
extreme. But we're having a problem in that our network settings don't seem to
be sticking. How does one go into the network settings for a D-link router,
the old httP;//192.168.1.1 doesn't seem to work in this case.
Thanks,
Donna

I am not sure how new the device is. Based on the DVDS that shipped with the

Re: Printing envelopes from the Address Book [was Re: Using Drag and Drop in VoiceOver]

2010-10-03 Thread Esther

Hi Sarah, Paul, and Others,

Anne's instructions in the linked archive post also tell you how to
customize the printing for envelope size with the "layout" tab in the
print options dialog. So Sarah, if your printer can print the mini
envelopes, the print option can be set up to print envelopes for that
size. It can also customize the size and alignment of the printing
area for the address. And using options which Anne didn't describe,
you can customize the font type or include a graphic instead (if, for
example, someone has designed a logo type address as an image). If
your printer can't handle mini envelopes then you wouldn't be using
the envelope template in Pages to print these addresses anyway, and
you could switch your option from printing envelopes to printing
labels in the print dialogue. To read more about the label option,
read down the Mail Archive thread with Control+N in Safari to my
later post about printing labels. (People using other browsers can
substitute "Control" with the appropriate access key for their web
browser -- e.g., for Internet Explorer you would use Alt+N to read the
next post in the Mail Archive thread, and Alt+P to read the previous
post).

And if, for some reason, you want to customize your label and/or
address print outs from Address Book (e.g., include or leave out extra
fields that are in Address Book), you can write yourself an Automator
workflow that will handle this.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Paul and Sarah,

Is there any reason why you don't want to just use the print dialog

from my address book (or, if you want to print multiple envelopes,
either select a group in your Address Book or do a general set of
non-contiguous selections and create a group from the "File" menu
options of Address Book's menu bar), then bring up the print dialog
with Command+P and set the "Style" pop up button to "Envelopes".
Anne Robertson gave step by step instructions on how to do this in
an archived list post:

(Re: Addressing envelopes with Voiceover)

You can also change the pop up button to print "Mailing Labels"
instead. I know this isn't an answer to how to use VoiceOver's
drag and drop, but since I wouldn't use this to print envelopes
unless the default method of printing envelopes were inadequate
I've simply pointed you to instructions on how to print envelope
addresses in general. Note that if you want to choose specific
fonts that you can also do that from the controls in the print
dialog, so unless there is a very specific envelope template that
you have to use in Pages, or you have custom designed envelope
logos, etc. that can only be used in Pages I don't see why you are
making more work for yourself. I've changed the subject line (from
using drag and drop to printing envelopes from address book) to
reflect the content of this answer. If you have another question
that requires using VoiceOver's drag and drop, we can return to
that subject.

help with navigation in html tables

2010-10-03 Thread Claus Thøgersen

Hi,

I am trying to use some of my favorit webforums with voiceover.

On the forums I read, each forum and the threads are in a table. This means
that I need a way to move around in a table both horizontally and
vertically. the manual is not very specific on how to do this, so I need
some more information.
I have tried interacting with the table but I cannot
see any advantages by doing it.

For an example of a forum see
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1076

Here it would be nice to be able to move down in the collum with each new
topic.

Re: any way to certufy mail using Apple Mail?

2010-10-03 Thread Jonathan Cohn
I am not sure of the entire process, but Apple Mail does support
S/MIME for encryption and certification. It looks like the first step
is to import a certificate from a signing authority into keychain. It
sounds like once that is done, Mail automatically has "sign" and
"crept" functions. There are some discussions here:

http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090914071159766

One thing I did notice is that PGP is not compliant with the Apple mail program.

Best wishes,

JOn

Re: jumping to next line of text with voiceover?

2010-10-03 Thread Mary Otten
Mike,
I just tried what I understood you to say would work with voice over and it did
not. That is, while interacting with a block of text I did a vo plus a to start
reading, then I hit first the right arrow key, which stopped speech, then the
restart of the continuous read followed by down arrow, which also stopped
speech. So I am apparently not understanding what it is you say you can do with
VO while interacting with a block of text, that resembles the results you get
while doing a continuous read with aWindows screen reader, where it is possible
to move forward or back a line and not have to restart the continuous reading.

Re: prizmo?

2010-10-03 Thread erik burggraaf
Thanks, That's reassuring. I've only done one scan, it took my clumsy fingers
over an hour. How do you figure out when the focus is set properly?

Have you ever found a way to buy the acapella voices for it from a computer?
Right now it seems they want me to go through the app on my ipod which isn't
currently connected to WIfi, and may never be.

Thanks for any advice.

Accessible Mac compatible printers: was: Re: Abyy Fine-Reader again

So, is this
CM2320NF
very costly? I'm sort of in need of a new printer, and, I'd like an all in

There is a demo and yes the Express is the version you would demo and purchase.
You can use Image Capture to grab the image from the scanner and ABBYY to
convert the image into something useful. Some scanners are supported directly
by ABBYY, but it must be one with a twain interface as I recall. I just
purchased ABBYY and it works very nicely with my HP Laser printer that is an
all-in-one, CM2320NF.

When doing continuous read in a word processor or similar application, you need
to interact with the text first, then it will do what you want. On a web page,
when doing a continuous read, it will move to the item that is being read.

Re: jumping to next line of text with voiceover?

2010-10-03 Thread Mike Arrigo
Voice over doesn't really move through lines the way a windows screen reader
does, here is one of those times where voice over works differently, and it's
good to set aside what you were used to in windows. Voice over moves item by
item through a web page, with links and controls, it's very similar, but for
text, it usually ends up moving by paragraph. Of course, if you want to read a
block of text more closely, you can interact with it nd read it word by word or
even character by character.

I remember in 10.5, voice over would work that way. You would interact with the

voiceover manual for IOS4?

2010-10-03 Thread erik burggraaf
OK guys, I've got my first ipod touch here. I can navigate around the screen,
open apps and folders, sort of type on the slide type keyboard and so on. Not
bad for an hour or two fiddling, but I need a manual or something, even if it
stinks like the voiceover manual for Mac OS 10.6. Anybody know where I can get
this?

Re: Pdf2rtf service

2010-10-03 Thread Justin Ekis
Hi Scott,

In my original post I mentioned my first experience with this. Yes I have used
it and it works very well. You wouldn't even know that there was something
going on in the background, it just feels like textedit supports pdf files
directly. It's very impressive. The reason the reviews are dated is because the
service hasn't been updated since 2007. It's functionality is complete and
there is no need to update it, unless a future version of OSX happens to change
the API that it uses.

Re: Use of external keypad, particularly with Fusion?

2010-10-03 Thread Esther

Hi Garry,

Try the Lenovo 33L3225 USB Numeric keypad. This worked for me when I
wanted to get a numeric keypad that I could use for learning the
Numpad Commander sequences in Leopard on my Macbook, and also checked
out correctly for my previous 12" PowerBook, and under Linux on a
ThinkPad as well as under Windows XP on the Windows side of that dual-
boot machine. See this archived post on: "Re: external numpad for the
Mac"

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg25812.html
It links to the original post I made about the USB numeric keypad, and
gives a direct link for purchasing this product that still works.
(That post was made just after this list moved to Google Groups, and
before archiving at the secondary Mail Archive site was turned on, so
it doesn't come up easily in a search; using the Mail Archive search
facilities typically works about 10 times faster for me than trying to
search on the Google Groups page for this list.)

I'll also point you to Erik Burggraaf's post from a month ago on the
KeyRemap4MacBook software linked on:

http://pqrs.org/

me getting frustrated during long sessions. So I'm wondering if
anyone has used any USB or Bluetooth numeric keypads with a Mac?

Several are Mac compatible and though I'm pretty sure they'll work
fine for numeric entry I do wonder how well the key codes will be
interpreted if I'm simultaneously using the insert on the keypad as a
modifier along with keys on the keyboard. Even more exciting when
considering this being passed to a VM.

Or do I just say screw it and buy a wireless keyboard that includes a

Abyy Fine-Reader again

Hi all,

Sorry if I'm rehashing old stuff, but I'm looking at having to replace my
scanner, so am also revisiting the question of scanning alternatives for the
Mac.

My memory is that there is no demo for Abbyy find-reader, which is one of the
reasons I never gave it a try. Am I mis-remembering this? I see on their site
that their is a demo for the Express version, is that one accessible? Also can
I do both the scanning and recognition in Fine-reader? I was just looking at
an older post where Anne talks about using VueScan with Read Iris, and that
looks like a headache and a half.

Re: facebook chat

Facebook chat is usable but tricky, its fine if you are only chatting to one
person, but becomes a bit of a nightmare when chatting to more than one person.

iChat can be configured to work with Facebook and works very well, or you can
take the no hassle option and use adium, AOL Instant Messenger or Yahoo
Messenger etc

Re: growl

2010-10-03 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello Krister,

This is exactly what I plan to do. :) Well, or look at how to do it, anyway,
and I hope to devote more time to this unless someone else is going to look at
it. But it doesn't look that way.

Keep in mind that speech just changes the way the application displays
messages, but it does not change them. I'm not sure how to make Speech do more
than speak just yet, as I'm not exactly sure if VoiceOver can even see the
Growl notifications when using other display styles. I don't even believe
VoiceOVer can, currently. Perhaps the ability to assign a hotkey might be in
order, and given the language Growl uses, that should be possible. I am not
quite certain on Growl's limitations, although I would assume that, even though
there is no visuals to click it may still be possible to make Growl perform the
action anyway.

As for changing the message you get, that isn't going to happen as they are
application-specific and not optimized for the style you are using.

I'm not sure how much time I'll get, or even if I'll be able to get further
with this. Hopefully, someone can pick up this project and take another, much
closer and thorough look than I can at the moment. Growl is certainly very
complex and requires some time.

Nic

Re: growl

2010-10-03 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi Eric

The thing with VoiceOver is that the screenreader interrupts itself when new
information is displayed. THis is extremely handy, in fact, but not in
applications such as text-based environments like Terminal.

Growl will work with Skype. When you start Growl, you may have to relaunch for
Skype to show up in the "Applications" tab. This is because the application
needs to register itself with Growl, and if no registration is received, it
will simply not work. That's in a nutshell. I could go much more in-depth here
as to why, but that's not that important.

You can find the Speech style in the "Display" tab. When setting this style, it
will become your default. This means that, if you select an application to use
with Growl in the "Application" tab and click "Configure", every time you tell
a particular application to use the "Default style" it will do just that
(Speech being default in this case). Default is also the standardized option
for all applications unless you change this.

RE: Printing envelopes from the Address Book [was Re: Using Drag and Drop in VoiceOver]

2010-10-03 Thread Paul Hunt
Thanks Esther. I'll try this. I was actually working with my Onetoone
trainer at the Apple Store and thought I would try from the template. Mail
Merge works very nicely with groups of addresses. I'll look at Anne's post.

Subject: Printing envelopes from the Address Book [was Re: Using Drag and
Drop in VoiceOver]

Hi Paul and Sarah,

Is there any reason why you don't want to just use the print dialog from
Address Book to print envelopes? Unless you need to match a specific format
template for Pages, I would just select an entry from my address book (or,
if you want to print multiple envelopes, either select a group in your
Address Book or do a general set of non-contiguous selections and create a
group from the "File" menu options of Address Book's menu bar), then bring
up the print dialog with Command+P and set the "Style" pop up button to
"Envelopes". Anne Robertson gave step by step instructions on how to do
this in an archived list post:

http://www.mail-archive.com/discuss%40macvisionaries.com/msg45300.html

(Re: Addressing envelopes with Voiceover)

You can also change the pop up button to print "Mailing Labels" instead. I
know this isn't an answer to how to use VoiceOver's drag and drop, but since
I wouldn't use this to print envelopes unless the default method of printing
envelopes were inadequate I've simply pointed you to instructions on how to
print envelope addresses in general. Note that if you want to choose
specific fonts that you can also do that from the controls in the print
dialog, so unless there is a very specific envelope template that you have
to use in Pages, or you have custom designed envelope logos, etc. that can
only be used in Pages I don't see why you are making more work for yourself.
I've changed the subject line (from using drag and drop to printing
envelopes from address book) to reflect the content of this answer. If you
have another question that requires using VoiceOver's drag and drop, we can
return to that subject.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Hi Sarah,

So far here is what I have received from apple about drag & droping.

It works in Leopard I know this because I use it every day on my G5.

On my Mac Pro running Snow Leopard 10.6.4 It is currently broken. But I have
heard of some people on the list using it in various applications.

 i think.

as of now for my needs its whacked out!!!

Let them know @ apple about this and may be it will get fixed quicker.

Below is the response from apple about drag & drop.

Good morning Chuck,

I heard back from engineering this morning and they are currently aware of
some issues when trying to drag and drop items while using VoiceOver,
including the behavior you described. They are currently looking into how
the behavior can be fixed and improved, but unfortunately we can not provide
an ETA for when the changes will be available. It will be released as a
software update to the operating system once it is complete. If I hear
anything further or get an ETA I will be sure to pass that along to you.

Sincerely,

Rhonda Hess-Beavers

Unless someone on this can guide you on how to fix your problem, you need to

This is not an Apple site!

Re: growl

2010-10-03 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
the main disadvantage with having Growl set to speech is that when a message
comes that requires interaction, such as a growl update or an added or removed
file from dropbox, you can't interact with the message, or can you?
if something should be done about the speech style, it would be the possibility
to interact with messages that require interaction, a queue of spoken events so
that not everything is spoken at once and a possibility to silence the speech
with a key.

Re: growl

2010-10-03 Thread Eric Oyen
Nicolai,
I only just discovered growl today. I am still learning what a mac can do for
the blind. I didn't see a speech option on the control panel configuration for
growl.

I haven't figured out how to get it to work with skype either. I do like the
fact that it does work nicely with Adium (an all-in-one sms/im client)

I wouldn't mind an ability to read irc chats automatically. I am just not sure
voiceover can handle that as designed.

Re: growl

2010-10-03 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hello Rafaela!

Growl is very much accessible. Simply switch the display style to speech and
you're good to go. You can do this from with in System Preferences>Growl.

The way Growl handles speech is slightly odd, though, as it speaks everything
at once. That means that, if you get Skype chats and three to four people
typing at once, it will announce all of this as soon as it happens. This means
that occasionally, more events will speak at the same time. Growl is highly
customizable, however, so you can change which events you want to speak for
applications that implement Growl. Skype doesn't really need Growl, though, as
Skype supports its own application events except automatically speaking chats.

I'm currently looking at the source for Growl, so any suggestions for the
Speech style would be welcome. I took it upon myself to look at this
development, as not a lot of people besides visually impaired users utilize
this style and no one seemed interested to develop it much further.
