shurely That's a pretty good solution to read table structured documents that
are already produced. But what about any self made ones? To edit and read such
data using Microsoft word is a peace of cake. I think, today it's simply needed
for the visual impaired to get any kind of information like sighted people
does. Appl's accessibility aids for the visual impaired hav brought high
quality reading capabilitys concerning nearly all kinds of HTML based content.
So it simply makes me wonder how they could forget to work on similar
capabilitys to get the same results within offline documents, particularly
if those documents are produced with Works 9, the office suite that was
developed by Apple. I'm from Germany, and some members of the local comunity of
blind and visual impaired Mac users plans to make an inquiry to apple's
accessibility department. Of course it's a well known fact taht apple have to
care for lots of different reviews and feedbacc the company recieves every day
from all around the world. So why they should care 'bout the needs of only a
couple of blind users? But axactly that individuals often works very hard to
earnt their money. And that's the reason they need reliable productivity tools,
not only talking computers that reads tons of mails but not any table
structured syllabus.

Re: Any chance to get plain text with embedded tables announced by Vo correctly?

2010-11-11 Thread Justin Ekis
No, pages doesn't do any better about reading tables with voiceover. This is a
constant annoyance and until recently, it caused me to start fusion much more
than I anticipated.

For several of my classes, the syllabus is provided in a word document.
Everything reads fine except for the schedule of assignments. I can open the
document in textedit, bean, or pages but voiceover doesn't correctly speak the
table with the schedule. So I was booting the virtual machine just to check the
schedule twice a week with jaws. Finally I realized a simple solution. I let
textedit save the files as web pages. Voiceover reads most of these tables just
fine in safari.

I still have a couple documents that this didn't help, but I only have to look
at those monthly. Still, I join Martin in expressing great interest in a
solution to this issue.

Re: switching from 64 to 32 bit version of OS

2010-11-11 Thread Braille
First of all, if you have not done anything, again, osx is all 32 bit mode.
That being said,

1. Open about this mac, by vo plus m
2. Open more info. This is the same as the system profiler.
3. Go down to the software section.
4. take a look at the software overview and it will tell you Kernel and ext 64
bit mode or 32 bit mode. By default, it is 32 bit.

Now, I have used on 64 bit mode for the last several months. I have not noticed
any incompatibility issue. With some system speed tools, I can observe about 7
percent of speed gain but it is not that noticeable.
More information about how to change the default into 64 bit can be found here:

Hi:
Yes!
I did all of that, received no errors. I was listening to Teresa's mp3 file,
and reading the document. The terminal says press command shift 4, not 3. When
I run the ./solona.sh script, it says no directory exists. If I put a space
between the ./ solona.sh its says the Solona directory has been found. I've
gotten through the hard part. LOL It's the screen shot and running the script
that is difficult.

Re: [Bulk] solona help

2010-11-11 Thread Ray Foret Jr
First of all, the hot key to take an image of your screen is actually
command+shift+3, not 4. the next thing is this. When you unziped the Solona
folder, did you direct Terminal.app to go to the directlry in to which you put
the folder? I'd suggest that you put it in to your Documents folder off the
home folder. Here's what you type to get there:
 cd Users/Sarai/Documents/Solona

then press return. Now, the next thing you want to do is type:

chmod +x*

This tells Terminal.app that the Solona Setup.sh can be run as an exicutable.
Now, type:

setup.sh

this will cause the setup ruteen to ask you for your Solona username, which you
type in. Then press return. Now, it will ask you for your password, which you
type then press return. Next, it will tell you the directory from which the
screen shot will be taken. Go ahead and just press return here to accept the
default. Now, finally, the setup will ask you if you want to be informed about
the screen shot it's about to send off. Say yes or no to this by typeing y for
yes and n for no. Press return and you're done.

Tell you what, here's a link to the web page where you can find out even more.

Re: Solona app installation question

2010-11-11 Thread Sarah Alawami
at the time I hated and still hate using the terminal no spaces unless the
script has them but hopefully someone who remembers how to do this more then me
can help. I use a script called clisk and so my syntax would be

./clisk

followed by enter and with luck it should start up.

keep in mind you might need to change to the dir solona is in so

cd ~/home/solona

then run the script.

Take care.

Re: Mac Mini and lack of display

2010-11-11 Thread Mike Arrigo
Unless something has changed, connecting a display will make a difference, it
doesn't have to be turned on, just connected. The 2008 model could be fooled in
to thinking there was a monitor connected by connecting an adapter that would
allow it to be connected to a TV, it was the DVI to Video adapter. However, on
newer models, the analog connection was removed from the DVI port removing this
option, and the current mini only has hdmi and mini display ports I think.

Re: Trying to update firm wear in a APH device, but....

you need an archiver that will open self extractor files. These may be an exe
but it's just a self extracting file meaning there's a bit of decompression
code then a big chunk of actual data.

If it's a real exe and not a compressed archive then you have different issues
but I think that's what's going on.

Braille for other languages

2010-11-11 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

The latest update to Mac OS X removes Braille for other languages. You can
download a compatible version of the Braille tables from:

This package also includes beta versions of Dutch and Icelandic Braille should
anyone be interested.

Cheers,

How can you tell in which mode you are in?

RE: Mac Mini and lack of display

2010-11-11 Thread Rich Ring
Unfortunately, with the new Mac Minis, you have to have a display in order
to get rid of the sluggish behavior in Safari. You will read archived
messages that might say different, but it's not true. If you want to have
Safari perform as it should, you'll need a display.

Subject: Mac Mini and lack of display

Hello all,
I have a mid-2010 Mac Mini, and recently upgraded it to 8GB of ram.
However, I had a few questions about using it without a display.
First, I've heard from several users that using the mini without a display
causes sluggish performance. I've only noticed sluggish behavior in Safari
and Garage band so far, will adding a display really make a difference?
Second, is there a way to trick the mini in to thinking a display is
connected? According to the archives, this seemed to be possible last year
with a display adapter, but I haven't been able to determine if this method
still works with the latest revision of the mini.
Thank you for any help with this issue.
Best regards,
Matt

Re: feature suggestion for braille key assignments.

2010-11-11 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Alison, This is my entire thing, you can't use the display to perform
standard keyboard commands. Multitudenous voiceover commands yes, but no
standard mac os keyboard commands.

Unfortunately, I don't have a braillino to test on here, so I can't see what
you are seeing.

If you go to voiceover utility then braille then displays tab, you can press
the assign commands button and see all the ones that are predefined for your
braille display. You can also add more by pressing command B and then pressing
the button combination you want to add. Press space bar on it in the table and
you can choose from literally hundreds of functions. That display should also
allow you to write braille on your mac since it has an input keyboard.

I wish I could give you better info, but as I said, I don't have one here for
demo. Unfortunately they aren't funded here and no one sells them, or I would
have access to one.

Re: accessibility of MacBook Air

2010-11-11 Thread Austin Seraphin
I just wanted to chime in on this thread. I went from using a netbook to a
MacBook Air, and definitely notice the difference. Admittedly, for me, my
netbook had a rather nonstandard configuration. It came with a Windows XP
partition, and a second blank partition presumably for media files and the
like. I just installed Arch Linux on the second partition and made a sweet dual
boot setup with a minimum of fuss. I could even access the Windows partition
from Linux, from which I did most of my work. I put together a good enough
environment, but Mac just kills it! For me, it feels like owning two computers
in one, since I can do a lot of cool Unix stuff on it as well, including using
ssh to control my other linux servers. Just so cool!

That won't matter to most. Most will care about the hardware differences. The
macBook feels a lot more solid because of its unibody frame. You can tell. You
get what you pay for. The Air also uses flash for everything. When they say
"Instant On," they mean it! It also sounds better. The netbook, at least the
Asus I have, has its speakers on the bottom, whereas the Air has them under the
keyboard. I think the unibody frame also acts as a sort of resonance chamber or
something, it seems to help the sound instead of hindering it. Oh and of
course, unlike a Windows or Linux netbook, you can actually use the trackpad!
Don't get me wrong, I loved the setup I created, and still have to find some
ways of doing some things on the Mac, but for me the Air just seemed like a
no-brainer!

As for comparing the Air to notetakers, I never really got into reading braille
displays, so it didn't really bother me. I just got a sweet case and now have
the whole notetaking thing covered too. I just have to find the best ways to
take the notes! I like MacJournal for journaling and blogging. TextEdit works
for quick things. I know little of Pages, but will want to. Either way, for me,
the MacBook Air seems like the perfect computer and notetaker. I still have a
place in my heart for the Braille 'n Speak though.

Hi Erik,

I understand what you mean now. The only thing I'm still confused about is how
you assign commands. I cannot find a command for skimming through a message by
paratraphs. I have the next and previous commands, pan left and right commands.
But I don't see a command to go next and previous paragraphs. I'm sure I'm
missing something. I apologize for my ignorance on this matter. I never
realized that you could use the Braille display to also perform keyboard
functions on the Mac. I hope you are having a wonderful day. Thanks again for
answering all my questions.

Happily,

My thought is that you won't be able to open this file as it is a windows
executible file. I've been looking for a way to run these files natively on
OSX, but can't seem to find a clean solution other than using a virtual machine.

using the app called the unarchiver to unzip this file rbd_upd.exe yields a
message that says that it cannot open this file. Does anyone know of an app

Mac Mini and lack of display

2010-11-11 Thread Matt McCubbin

Hello all,
I have a mid-2010 Mac Mini, and recently upgraded it to 8GB of ram.
However, I had a few questions about using it without a display.
First, I've heard from several users that using the mini without a
display causes sluggish performance. I've only noticed sluggish behavior
in Safari and Garage band so far, will adding a display really make a
difference?
Second, is there a way to trick the mini in to thinking a display is
connected? According to the archives, this seemed to be possible last
year with a display adapter, but I haven't been able to determine if
this method still works with the latest revision of the mini.

Thank you for any help with this issue.
Best regards,
Matt

longshot help with odsagent error

2010-11-11 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi guys, my windows xp virtual machine is throwing up this spurious
error.

DNSAgent.exe failed to load component.
The application failed to start because DNSSD.dll could not be found.

Has any one encountered this?
I'm running vmFusion 3 with the current vmware tools installed. My guest OS is
windows xp pro sp3.

I've tried re-installing the network driver. That didn't work. I've tried
re-installing vmware tools, nothing doing. I've tried crying but this computer
never has been known for a sympathetic bent. I've tried google searching, and
it seems that ODSAgent is some apple cd and dvd sharing business.
Unfortunately that was the most useful thing I got. Everything else was
registry cleaners and dll download sites, most of which looked even sketchier
than trying to muddle along without dns support on windows.

Just to see what would happen, I pinged google on the mack side and got the
current IP address for www.google.com. When I put the ip address into firefox
in my windows vm it gives me the google homepage, so I have internet access,
but apparently DNSSD.dll is part of something windows uses to resolve dns and
so as long as I have the website's IP address I can connect, but if I just type
in a www, it doesn't go.

If any one has suggestions on how to fix this, my appreciation would know no
bounds.
Thanks,

Re: feature suggestion for braille key assignments.

2010-11-11 Thread erik burggraaf
Hum, well you're right I'm super confused, but I think I can clarify.

Actually, I was wrong in my original post which merks things up even more.

To understand what I'm doing, I'll give you a brief description of the braille
connect.

The front edge is cut out on a slant and has the following controls left to
right.
function keys 1 and 2, left space, joystick, right space, and function keys 3
and 4. The function keys are called f1 through f4 on the mac.
on the top face the braille display and it's router keys are at the front. On
each side of the braille display are three round keys running front to back
along the ends of the display. The mac calls these d1 through d6.
behind the router keys is a set of 8 braille input keys which are square and
laid out in an ergonomic braille keyboard style. Mac calls these dot1 through
dot8.When I was talking about d1+d2+d3, I actually meant dot1+dot2+dot3.

What I eventualy hope to accomplish is to force my mac to emulate the
conventions of a standard note taker, such as the braille note, braille sense,
or packmate.

You have some experience with these, so just nod along here.
In the notetaker convention, space+1 = previous letter, space+4 = next letter.
space+2 = previous word, space+5 = next word.
Space+3 = previous sentence, space+6 = next sentence.
Space+2+3 equals previous paragraph, space+5+6 = next paragraph.
Space+1+2+3 = go to top, space+4+5+6 = go to end.
add the word dot before all those numbers if you want to be mackish about it.

OK, so with the braille connect, we're breaking the convention already, because
next and previous letter are joystick left and right, but that's OK.

Here's what I'd like to do for the bc. I'll make a nice little table here.
Function, mac OS command, braille connect command,
Previous word, option left arrow, space+dot1,
next word, option right arrow, space+dot4,
Previous paragraph, option up arrow, space+dot2,
next paragraph, option down arrow, space+dot5,
beginning of line, control right arrow, space+dot3,
end of line, control right arrow, space+dot6,
go to top, command up arrow, space+1+2+3,
go to bottom, command down arrow, space+dot4+dot5+dot6.

I don't know anything about the brailleno control surface, but it wouldn't be
hard to put previous and next letter on dots 1 and 4, then move everything else
outward and put next and previous paragraph on dots 23 and 56.

If you don't normally use these commands, make yourself a reply to this
message, type some text and then practice going word by word, paragraph by
paragraph, top and bottom. Watch what happens on your brailleno as you
navigate with mac OS10 keyboard shortcuts. It shows you the information you
need without having to interact. Here I am at the bottom of a message I typed,
and if I want to go to the top I press command up arrow. The braille display
says hum, because that's the first word I typed. To get back here and continue
typing I skim the message paragraraph by paragraph til I get beck to my
signature.

I'm not interacting with the edit box that I'm using to type this message. The
reason is that I don't have a need to interact. I can edit without, but while
I'm not interacting, I can also decide to quickly jump over to the cc field and
copy this message to apple accessibility. Or, I can be monitoring two parts of
the screen at once, making a change in one area and observing how that change
effects another area.

As I look around for ways to add more features to my braille controller, it
strikes me that there are no provisions for mac OS10 commands. There are
hundreds of voiceover commands to choose from, including the ability to run
scrips from braille keys and all sorts of business, but if voiceover doesn't do
it, neither does the braille display. I think this is a serious oversight that
needs to be corrected, because mac OS itself has a lot to offer in terms of
keyboard functionality.

Of course, I'm still screaming for grade two braille input and some other
things. It will be interesting to see what OS10.7 offers us in terms of
braille functionality.

Getting additional information from the Airport status menu

2010-11-11 Thread Esther

Hi Geoff,

You wrote in another thread on WiFi stability:

As you probably discovered from ascertaining the ip address, under
system prefferences -> network, there's a box labeled "Show AirPort
status in menu bar". When checked, you can see information by either
via trackpad commander by double tapping the top with two fingers and
locating "airport" a little right of center near the top, or via the
keyboard by pressing vo-m-m and vo-arrow to thae airport menu (yet
another illistration why I almost always use trackpad commander, but I
digress).

Anyway, I read documentation indicating that one can press option-
click in order to expose a menu that shows information such as
throughput and channel number. I tried routing the mouse pointer,
disabling trackpad commander and pressing option-click, however it
only brought focus to the application. Perhaps there's another way to
simulate an option-click in vo so as to expose this menu?

Like many things, this is in the archives . See Barry Hadder's
tip on extra status menus in SL, which I've pasted in below.

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg08864.html

"I found an interesting way to get extra airport status information. I
wanted to post this because I believe that it is new to sl. Open the
status menu with vo-m twice. Hold down the option key as you left or
right arrow over the airport menu icon. Now release the option key and
arrow down through the menu. This can be done on many of the other
menus such as volume, mobileme, etc."

In fact, this was not new to Snow Leopard; it also works in Leopard,
but is a neat feature. And you can navigate to the status menu bar any
way you like, but you should have the Option key pressed before you
right or left arrow to the AirPort status menu if you want the
additional information displayed. Let us know whether this works for
you.

Cheers,

Esther

You can read word by word or character by character in

Re: editing cells in numbers

2010-11-11 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Greg,

To edit a cell in Numbers, you have to interact with the cell then bring the
mouse cursor to the VO cursor and double click either with the physical mouse
or VO-Shift-Space bar. You can then edit as normal.

When trying to read the contents of a cell letter by letter, I get the same
jumping by two letters at a time.

Cheers,

Anne

Skype 5 beta and the call window

2010-11-11 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hi,
I'm on a skype call and it seems like i've got a couple of interesting problems
here.
1, i can't recieve more than one file, because it seems that Skype displays a
conversation that i have closed, even though it's closed.
2, When i am in a call, i can only see the chat box and some images and a html
content and a tool bar, no source list or contact list or possibility to
manipulate conferences, like calling individual people etc.Looks like the
window needs resizing, only i do not know how.
In need of some advise here.
/Krister

Fwd: Reading word by word or character by character

2010-11-11 Thread Colin M
Hi Frank!
Me again, just in case that vo+space does not work in the vo help menu at all!
If you vo+space on something in the help menu like for example label item it
will execute that command!
I think you do not use braille like me because I presume they can feel how a
word is spelt in that menu :]

editing cells in numbers

2010-11-11 Thread Greg Aikens
Hi all,
Is there a way to edit the contents of a cell in numbers without overwriting
the whole cell? I have tried interacting and moving the cursor to the point in
the cell I want to edit, but whenever I start typing it deletes everything that
was there. Also, the VO cursor curiously moves two words or letters at a time
instead of one.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Greg

Hello Frank,

When you have Quick Nav on, you change the rotor setting by pressing the
left and up arrows or right and up arrows together. It will cycle
through Navigation, Words, and Characters. These settings control the
function of the up and down arrows in Quick Nav.

Cheers,

Re: feature suggestion for braille key assignments.

2010-11-11 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Isaac,

Actually the joystick on the bc emulates movement of the voiceover keys by
default which is not the same thing.

If you want to change it so that the joystick emulates the arrows, do the
following.
Press control option f8.
Press b, or arrow down to braille.
VO right to the displays tab and press vo space on it.
Tab to the assign commands button and press space bar.
Arrow down the table until you get one of the joystick commands. My first one
is joystick left so I'll use that one. On yours it tells you joystick left is
the move left command.
Press space bar and a menu will pop up.
Arrow down to braille and press right arrow.
Arrow down to map braille key to left arrow key and press enter.
Repeat until you have all of the left, right, up, and down joysick positions
set to map braille key left, right, up, and down arrows respectively.

Hope this helps,

Re: Reading word by word or character by character

2010-11-11 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Frank,

When you have Quick Nav on, you change the rotor setting by pressing the left
and up arrows or right and up arrows together. It will cycle through
Navigation, Words, and Characters. These settings control the function of the
up and down arrows in Quick Nav.

Cheers,

Anne

Hi Ann, thanks for the reply. I am a little unclear though. How do I set
the rotor to read by words or characters?
Thanks

Hello Frank,

You can read word by word or character by character in menus by turning
Quick Nav on and setting the rotor to either words or characters. You
then use the up and down arrows to read the difficult item.

This also works for filenames and other pieces of information where the
usual VO reading commands won't work.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Victor Stream with Windows 7 under vmware.

2010-11-11 Thread Eric Oyen
Kevin,
what version of vmware you looking at here?
some versions had problems with supporting USB devices from the host system
(especially on the old server platforms). I haven't used any of the new vmware
products so, I am not exactly qualified on them.

The problem I see here is that if you get the streams on another machine and
try to play them on yours, you don't have the DRM key on that machine, hence a
failure of the files to play. I haven't messed with audible streams/files yet.
I am still fighting a linux laptop to find why it has a memory leak in a system
service.

still, if you have itunes on both windows and OS X, it shouldn't be hard to
stream them from one to the other (itunes can do streaming servers, though I
have never set up one).

come to think of it, I might try that here just to see if I can do it.
