mac and iPhone syncing over the air through google calendars

2011-02-16 Thread Marlaina Lieberg
Hi all.

I use to have this working perfectly. I'd enter an appointment on my mac and
it would appear on my iPhone within a few minutes as well. The reverse was
also true.

Something has happened and I don't know if it is an iPhone problem or a MacBook
Air problem, but things on the computer are not reaching the phone. I can do
an appointent on the phone and it will reach the computer. My husband can do
an appointment on his mac and it will reach my mac, but they never reach my
phone.

In iTunes, as always, sync calendars is not checked. On the phone, push is
turned on. Does anybody have any other thoughts as to what I should do? ICal
is looking at the 2 calendars it needs to look at and that it has been looking
at for a year now. This is very frustrating, since I am on the road right now
and need this thing to work. I really do not know if this is an iCal, iPhone
or iTunes setting issue, though I doubt it is the latter. Thanks for any
assistance.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread Antonio M. Guimaraes Jr.
iPal is now working in conjunction with K-1000.

If you are okay with buying yet another expensive software solution, check
directly with the ipal people as I believe they are soon anouncing a pricing
deal for K-1000 users.

Re: Itunes beginner's questions.

2011-02-16 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Importing content is very easy. Just press command O and the file browser will
open. Just press return on the file or folder you wish to add.

Moving content around playlists is pretty easy too. You have a few options
here. For your audiobooks. You can just select them from your music playlist,
press command C to copy, and paste them in the books playlist with command V.

I don't recommend this for audiobooks though. I suggest going to the
audiobooks you have in your music playlist and selecting them and pressing
command I to bring up the get info dialog. Then select the option tab. here
you will find a pop up menu for media kind. Choose audiobook. You can also
set that iTunes remembers the place you left of in the book. Just press return
when thats done. This won't work for descriptive movies because they are in a
music format. You will need to do the before mention copy and paste to bring
them to the Movies playlist. At least That I'm aware of. I don't deal much
with movies with iTunes.

Re: Itunes beginner's questions.

2011-02-16 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Sounds like you've got a add to library question. Sure. Just press command+o
and a standard file browse dialog will pop up. In which dialog, you can add
either individual files or folders as you wish from anywhere on your drive.
Personally, I don't use ITunes all that much at all. For playing my media and
most streams, I use Cog player. Just google and it will come right up. For
burning CD's just use Simply Burns. Again, google should find that for you
also.

Itunes beginner's questions.

2011-02-16 Thread Phantom.Vader
Hi again everyone!

These are some questions I've been meaning to ask for a while now,
because I haven't yet been able to figure them out on my own yet.
Excuse me if they're dumb! Relative Mac newby. What can I say?
Anyway, my questions are as follows:

1. How do you import a song into Itunes using the keyboard? Right now
I just click it in its location in the finder (or my external drive)
and let Itunes play it, which seems to import it automatically.
Needless to say, though, this can get laborious!

2. Is it possible to import entire folders, say of a whole album or
audio-book, from the finder or my external drive into Itunes? Also,
is there anything analogous to the ability you have in Winamp to open
and play an entire folder?

3. Is it possible to add songs to an already created playlist?

4. Can you move files to a different playlist-folder? For example, I
have a couple of descriptive movies and audio-books in my library, but
because of the way I imported them, see question 1, they've ended up
in my "music" folder. But I want them to go in my "movies" and
"books" folders respectively. Can I move them there, and if so how?

Anyway, those are all my questions so far. Any and all help is
greatly appreciated!

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread Mary Otten
There is no solution for the Mac equal to K1000 if you use things like the
bookmark and other features of that application. The k3000 for Mac is old and
not vo-compatible and not appropriate for blind folks. Stick with k1000 and
never mind native Mac solutions if you're a power user, which it sounds like
you are. You won't be happy with other solutions that don't offer features
you're use to and don't offer anything like the convenience of the K1000
application. I have K1000 running on a Windows machine with a bookedge scanner
by Plustek. Bootcamp or a vm may work for you. Good luck.

LOL Thanks! That'll save me a lot of keystrokes! Still wondering
what's with the loop though. As I said above, it's actually reading
as re-sized. I'm just not hearing the new size in playback. What
gives? I copied and pasted my loop from the loop-browser into my
arrange lay-out area, but now I'm wondering if maybe I did that wrong?

Help! I'd really love to get this up and working!

Thanks.

RE: Is there some way one can accidentally block a website?

2011-02-16 Thread Jonathan Cohn
There are quite a few things that could occur.
1 general routing issues. The easiest way to check this is with
traceroute. This can be run from the terminal, but the network utility
in the utilities folder has a tab for this. If you run this with ahost
name like maps.google.com then a line is produced for each router
between your computer and the closest point in the internet to the
webserver. If all you get is lines with stars, then there is something
close to your system that is blocking your requests.

If i were the owner of the web site i would have asked you what ip
address you were connected to, and also asked you to try connectting
with a ip address instead of aname to verify that name service was not

Re: [Bulk] Re: [Mac-cessibility News] Twitterific for Mac 4.0 Is Released Sans VoiceOver Accessibility

2011-02-16 Thread Laura M
I guess my problem whenever this topic comes up--and it comes up kind
of a lot--is that Josh and the other mods don't owe us anything. If
they feel their services aren't appreciated enough, they're perfectly
within their rights to stop providing them. If we feel we aren't
getting enough out of what they provide, on the other hand--well, we
aren't putting anything into it, you know? Why should we be entitled
to get a return on it? Getting anything at all out of what people do
in their free time, at no cost to anyone but themselves, is a bonus,
IMO. If people don't want to go to the website to read the story, then
no one's making them, and the snippets are always long enough to allow
decisions to be made about whether the story is interesting enough to
warrant that extra click.

I'm not having a go at you, or the message you sent, which seemed
reasonable. It's just the general tone the topic takes on always seems
pretty entitled, to me.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread erik burggraaf
Yes this is true I've strongly discouraged this since I work for a fair few
deaf-blind, but I suspect it's a done deal. On the other hand, I've been told
that a true voiceover compatible mac solution is in the works. In that case,
braille support will be leaps and bounds ahead of where eyepal was on it's own
anyway.

I'm really worried that those who have paid may not receive their screen

pretty much a one-man show.

So, I hope you will be able to contact someone who knows something.

Hi,

tried to get expedited shipping. However, I've not heard a word from them yet,
and it's been at least two weeks or more. I even tried contacting them through
their form, and have not gotten any responses.

I know there's been discussion of them not being online for their captcha
service, but I thought at least they would process orders. Also, I had seen an
operator online with the captcha service for at least a few minutes the night
when I ordered, so I thought they were back online.

I know it's been discussed here, which is why I'm posting about it. I'm not
sure what to do. I've heard the guy is sick, so I don't want to do a
chargeback, but it really should have been shipped and arrived here already.
Has anyone else ordered recently?

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

I understand it so far that braille support will stop in both zoom-ex and
eyepal, is that correct. To me it is not an option to have a scanning solution
that can not be used with braille. If eyepal/zoom-ex will run in a way so it
could work together with voiceOver it would be great, easy to use, good quality
of scanning, but still not as good as finereader 10.

I have worked with both readiris and finereader for the mac, to me it is not
good enough.

It is one of the last things I still use my windows for. But I hope that there
will be a solution in the future, so I also can scan with my mac.
Best regards Annie.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi, the only real viable solution I've seen is the Eyepal. While I'm not
overwhelmed with the product it's fast and accurate, supports braille at least
for now, batch scans, saves to mp3, and otherwise does more or less what the
literature says it does.

Many people have gotten off the shelf programs to work for them which is great,
but so far no one has proven it to me.

Is there some way one can accidentally block a website?

2011-02-16 Thread Donna Goodin
I am trying to access a website, and I keep getting an error message that my
Mac can't connect to the server. The owner of the site says the server's been
up all day, and a friend from another location has been able to connect to the
site. Also, I can connect to other sites, so I know my connection is OK. If
anyone has any ideas about what's going on, I'd really appreciate any help.
thanks in advance,

Re: configuring outgoing mail server

2011-02-16 Thread Esther
Hi Donna,

I'm not Jonathan, but if I understand, you are in Mail, and you brought up the
Preferences pane with Command+Comma, then navigated to the "Accounts" pane and
selected it with VO-Space. On the Accounts pane, you went to the "Accounts"
Table, interacted, and selected the account you wanted to edit (e.g. MobileMe,
Gmail, etc.) or you used the "Add" button (VO-Space) to set up a new account
and select it. You then chose the "Account Information" tab (VO-Space)
(selected tab 1 of 3). On the "Account Information" tab, navigate to the entry
near the bottom for "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)". There's a pop up button
just after this entry. Use VO-Space, and arrow down to "Edit SMTP Server
List…" Selecting this will bring up a new dialog window.

I haven't been following the previous discussion, but I believe that is the
entry that Jonathan was describing.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Under the accounts pane there is a menu box for outgoign mail server. The
bottom item of this menu is an edit SMTP servers.

This will bring up a new window and from there I think you will find what you

Re: request for people in the UK using Voiceover

2011-02-16 Thread Esther
Hello Liam,

May I suggest that you might want to join the mac-access list? The list owners
are UK based, and as for "using Mac and VoiceOver for practically everything"
they migrated their entire server system over to the Mac about a year and a
half ago, removing the last of their Windows-based machines from the business
end, as well as from their personal use. You'd also consequently find a large
number of knowledgeable UK-based list members there, and their servers also
host Anne Robertson's French CeciMac.org group. Of course, there are also a
number of US list members, too.

For more information about this list, visit their mac-access.net web page and
read the links about their E-mail forums:

RE: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread Caitlyn and Nickels
Hi Dane,

As long as Ihad something which I could scan a book into the computer
accurately, get it recognized, and do what needed done, yes, I wouldn't see
any problems with using an off the shelf product, as long as it worked with
vo. I just use the book mark features, for example that are in k1000
whilest studying, for example, for marking important bits of text so I can
find them later on and obviously want something similar or close and I just
don't know what's out there.

It seems like the I work package comes close to what I have with office, if
not better, as long as it works with vo(apple says it does), so the only
thing that is holding me off from taking the apple plunge all the way is
this k1000 thing. The kurzweil people said we could upgrade to the 3000
version which is made for the mac, but they forgot to tell my husband and me
that it doesn't talk! We don't know if it works with vo, but the upgrade
would not cost us that much, if we did it that way, since we already own
k1000 v. 12.something.

Would you be prepared to consider an off the shelf scanning system for
your Mac? Meaning something like Abey Fine Reader?

No, its not self voicing but you can get around it with Voiceover so
some knowledge of how Voiceover works will be a must before you use it
but that will come anyway if you plan to use Voiceover with your Mac
.

Running a dual boot system or a virtual machine just to run Kurzweil
seems to be going to one hell of a lot of trouble to me , I know
where you're coming from with Kurzweil though as I've used it here on my
Windows PC and no one can deny its a great package - even though its
massively overpriced in my humble opinion - but as I said before, you a
little knowledge of Voicoever will go a long way and save you a lot of time.

Re: [Bulk] Re: [Bulk] Re: [Mac-cessibility News] Twitterific for Mac 4.0 Is Released Sans VoiceOver Accessibility

2011-02-16 Thread Ray Foret Jr
For my part, I'm going only to say this. I suspect that what we're dealing
with here is a fundamental misunderstanding. Seems to me to be the case that,
if we had this explanation earlier, (perhaps at the point of first criticism),
it would never have gone to this level. I myself have found the site to be of
use especially in my beginning Mac days. I think there's sometimes a gap
between what developers put in and what people get out. This gap could, I
think, be eliminated by better explanations on both parts as to when problems
arise. Developers feel that the would be recipients of a piece of information
or site is not being appreciated by the would be recipients. The recipients
feel that not enough is being done. I suspect that it might be useful if we
all kind of stepped back from the edge a bit and asked ourselves how we can
better communicate with one another about things going on. I'm not suggesting
we all become experts at this; but, I think if we let this gap go on to long,
it would not be healthy for either side.

Just my two cents.

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread Earle M. Harrison
Hello,

My company is a Apple value add reseller and not only do we sell Apple
computers, but we custom configure them for no additional charge. This means
if you want a VMWare fusion set-up we will install the version of Windows that
you want and custom configure using some tricks that we've learned in house
that help with smoothly switching back and forth between the Apple and
Microsoft environments. Everybody who purchase a Mac from us also gets a free
copy of the Mac Academy Workbook and Study Guide along with 17 audio learning
modules in MP3 format.

There are a couple ways to go about setting-up a scan and read system using off
the shelf mainstream technology, but given what you said about your reliance on
K1000 as a student, perhaps it would be prudent to install K1000 on the Windows
side, and then perhaps purchasing the Eye-Pal camera which can be used either
on the Mac or the Windows Side. Although Eye-Pal was eventually ported into an
X11 Application using something called WINE and is not coded in the native
Apple environment but recognition is good and fast.

Feel free to contact me directly off list if you have any questions whatsoever.

Best,

1. These messages are auto generated by the site. It provides an excerpt, the
length of which I cannot control. It isn't a human copying and pasting the
message into an email.

2. As the main author of the written content for the site, I'm very sorry to
hear you feel our content is so poorly written. I take a great deal of time and
put a great deal of effort into the site, and am transitioning to devoting more
resources to providing news and content. Tutorials, more podcasts, and more
written features are planned. I hope you will find some of it useful. I also
find it a little disheartening that you feel it appropriate to attack someone's
work and don't even take the time to proof read/correct an email you're sending
out to hundreds of others, which serves no purpose but to put down someone else.

3. We've gone over and over the reasons for the moderation choices we make on
these lists. We can't please everyone. We really do try to provide a good forum
and a good web site that is useful for as many people as possible.

Myself, the mods of these lists, and those of us who work on the web site are
not these terrible evil ogres some of you seem to believe we are. We all
volunteer our time for free to provide these things. We try to make them
valuable.

Re: scanning and the mac

2011-02-16 Thread Josh de Lioncourt
I agree with Dane. I recently started using Abby FineReader, and have found it
to be an excellent solution on the Mac. It's not tailored to the visually
impaired specifically, but it does work quite well. The US retail price of Abby
FineReader is $99, and there is a trial available from their web site.

HTH.

Hi,

We have been kicking around the idea of getting a couple of new macs for a

The main thing that is holding us back is our heavy reliance on Kurzweil. I

solona.net — tactile screen protectors

2011-02-16 Thread Brandon Olivares
Hi,

I recently came across solona.net. I had heard of their tactile screen
protectors. My fiance just got an iPhone and is having some trouble texting and
such, so I thought it'd be useful for her, so I ordered us both one. I even
tried to get expedited shipping.

Thanks,
Brandon

Re: Send/Receipt requests in Mail

2011-02-16 Thread Michael Busboom
This is very helpful, Jim, and I will certainly read the documents to which you
referred. However, in order to not make waves here at work, I will use
Outlook. Most definitely not what I would have wanted, but it's probably for
the best, politically.

Thanks to everyone,

Mike

 Hi Jim:
If I remember right there is a setting in Outlook express, and possibly in
Outlook that automatically requests a return receipt. I personally always
thought it was useless, but I've also gotten the "return Receipt requested

I wonder if there's anything in Google server settings for this.

Re: Shazam for ipad is free

2011-02-16 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Ed,

Just FYI, Shazam does not work well with Voiceover. Not sure if it's available
for the iPad, but better options would be MusicID or SoundHound. I've used
the former not the latter, and can say MusicID works quite well on my iphone.
Cheers,
Donna
