Question about backup software
Hi All: They both allow me to create an image of my HD and even boot it up from a USB external drive. This is absolutely fantastic!I have played with both Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner. Can any of you comment on what you like about either program? I notice that CCC seems to be a free program, whereas, Super Duper is $27.95 to unlock the full program. Is there any reason I might want to pay for Super Duper, or, will CCC pretty much do much of the same thing? Thanks for any help. Joseph, According to this article, it would appear that Sendmail is part of OS X. Unfortunately, this article is completely irrelevant for what I want to know. I'm looking for a tutorial on using Sendmail via the Mac. I suppose I can just dig up a Unix one and mess around with it if I can't find a Mac one. At any rate here's the article I was looking at. http://oreilly.com/pub/ct/51 I'll try and see if I can dig up some more info later, as I'm interested in this subject due to my own curiosities. New ipad user, need some app suggestions
Hi all. I ordered an iPad to myself for my birthday and it is a iPad 1, didn't see anything in the ipad 2 that I need at the moment. Ok, I loaded it with a lot of apps and to my surprise the apps that works on the iPhone isn't accessible at all with the iPad version. One example is tweetter app wich is useable on iPhone but completely inaccessible on iPad. I thought that if a software works on one ios device it would work on another also with the specific app for the device. but I learned it the hard way that isn't so. So I need some suggestions here for a couple of apps. Twitter, what is the best app for that on ipad. Rss, I use feeds for iphone at the moment but any other tips for apps that syncs with google reader on ipad is welcome. Is it worth it to get pages for iPad? I think it's all for now. Maybe I'll be back again with more ipad questions later when I get more used to the device. I'd go with CCC. No sense paying 27 bucks for super duper, just to enable you to do full backups when you can get CCC and get the same functionality for free. Also, if you ned hourly backups, time machine has you covered. So, time machine and CCC both mean you're good to go. On Mar 10, 2011, at 10:52 AM, Thomas Byskov Dalgaard wrote: Hi! Re: Question about backup software
Yes, with time machine you must use a Mac OS X install disk to restore from a time machine backup. On Mar 10, 2011, at 12:31 PM, Esther wrote: Hi, One more comment on Carbon Copy Cloner and SuperDuper!. Mary's correct that CCC is shareware, and the suggestion is that if you find this useful, you send in $15 to help support continued development, but Mike Bombich, who wrote CCC, has previously, and repeatedly stated: CCC is considered donation-ware (uncrippled shareware). I worked hard developing CCC and its methodology and documenting it on the internet for the rest of the Mac OS X community. If you find CCC indispensable, please consider making a donation. Please note that if you are using CCC for an educational institution, you should NOT donate to Bombich Software. My heart is in Education and all software that I write shall always be free to Education. The trial download for SuperDuper! that does a full clone backup also support usage in this mode (non-incremental backups) without a purchased license. CCC also supports incremental backups. Most new users will probably prefer to use SuperDuper!, because the manual that comes with it goes into more details about what is involved in backups (in general) and how the program works. It also has a chattier interface in terms of telling you what it is doing at any point. People coming in from a linux or unix background may prefer the CCC style, while other new users may be more anxious to know more details about what the program is doing, and prefer SuperDuper! Both these programs allow you to make bootable clones of your current hard drive (which means that in case of complete drive failure, you can connect the drive to your machine, power up your Mac while pressing the Option button, then, when the device is booting, even though VoiceOver is not speaking, you can press your right or left arrow key followed by the return key to boot up your Mac. Note that this capability is different from the sort of backup capability you get with Time Machine). HTH. Re: Question about MAC OS X
Hi Rose and Joseph, FIrst of all, yes, this is the unix Sendmail command. You'd probably get a better and more complete answer to this from the mac-access list, where there's been more discussion about various kinds of Terminal usage, and Travis Siegel, in particular, has posted about set up configurations for Terminal. I'm not sure what you want to do, but if you want to get a mail system up and running, you might take a look at the web pages of Cutedge Systems: http://www.cutedgesystems.com/ Some background: this developer's software is aimed at users who have Mac minis that they use for small businesses. That is, people who want to take advantage of the server functions built into their computers, but without necessarily spending a great deal of time acquiring the technical background to run these processes. Their MailServe package is $25, for example, and you might want to take a look at the linked owner's manual for step by step instructions on setting one up. I originally found this in a web search for a source of information on Domain Name Server configuration that could be used for the mac-access list's server transition from Windows to Macs a few years ago. (This was because some of the server version tools weren't completely ready at the time, and the person doing the work did not have a linux/unix background to draw upon). So these tools are not meant to be used if you are, for example, running mail servers for a living, and really need to keep up with network security, but they can probably get a basic system up if you're starting from scratch and need to get a working system without huge expenditure of cash and time. Please note that I do not use these products myself (nor have I ever had a Mini or other desktop Mac), so this assessment is based upon reading the Versiontracker reviews of products like DNS Enabler from a few years back. Rose, I'll send you a PDF version of the mail man page offlist. You can configure your bash shell in Terminal to print out a PostScript version of the man page that the operating system will convert to PDF. (This is described in the Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal guide, I believe, if you bought this through the arrangement on the mac-access list.) Joseph, probably the best quick summary of the differences between Mac and linux is the old O'Reilly page on Top Ten Mac OS X Tips for Unix Geeks: http://macdevcenter.com/lpt/a/2792 Some things, as they note, have changed, such as the use of crontab being superseded by launchd quite some time ago. For more detailed coverage, you can find the O'Reilly book, Mac OS X for Unix Geeks (Leopard) by Ernest E. Rothman, Brian Jepson, and Rick Rothman on Bookshare. (That's the latest edition; there have been several queries to the publisher about whether there will be a Snow Leopard version, but one hasn't come out, and we're soon to move up to Lion.) If you're interested in joining the Mac-Access list, see their web site: http://www.mac-access.net/ and look under the links describing their E-mail forums pages. (I think this is the first time I've used their new domain address.) HTH. safari update and I'm absolutely unglued
Hey guys: I did the latest update to Safari let night. For some reason it has rendered Google search unusable. I'm hoping someone can either reproduce this, or tell me how to fix it. David Pogue Missing Manual Series (50% off) are today's O'Reilly eBook Deal of the Day
Hi All, The O'Reilly site has an entry for David Pogue's Missing Manual series at 50% as an addition to their regular eBook Deal of the Day: http://oreilly.com/store/dd-pogue.html This is in celebration of David Pogue's birthday (which I think was actually yesterday, but the announcement was late, and the web site is still up). So, for a limited time (possibly through today), you can get any of the David Pogue Missing Manual series books as eBook bundles for 50% off. That would include his Switching to the Mac (Snow Leopard) ($11.99), Mac OS X Snow Leopard ($13.99), and others (on the iPhone, Windows 7, etc.) These books (along with the Take Control books) are also available through iBooks (but only at full price.) When you buy the ebook bundles directly from O'Reilly, you get multiple versions that are all DRM-free, and that you can download at any time from your account. Furthermore, if there are minor revisions and updates, or new formats become available, you automatically get these. My copy of the Missing Manual for Mac OS X Snow Leopard comes in versions for iPhone (ePub), Android, Mobi (other PDA devices), PDF, and Daisy, as an exampl e. Not all formats are available for all books, but you can check on the formats that are available, and this range is pretty typical for the slightly older books, where they started making Daisy format available by working with Bookshare. In order to purchase O'Reilly books, you will need to create an account, and that requires a one-time negotiation of a CAPTCHA. If you purchase from the linked Deal of the Day page, the Coupon code should automatically be entered (or you can copy it and try to apply it manually on checkout). When the final purchase page is updated, before you make the actual purchase, you should see the discounted price. In general, the main eBook page is: http://oreilly.com/ebooks/epub/ After you make your purchase, you'll be pointed to two possible links, that you can revisit at any later time by logging into your account: If you're on your computer go to: https://members.oreilly.com/account/emedia and login with your user name and password to access any of the formats you use: ePub, PDF, etc.) From your iPhone or other mobile device, you can use the mobile emedia site to download to your device and enter your login: https://members.oreilly.com/mobile/account/emedia For US and International Bookshare subscribers, these books are available to you as part of the service, but not in the multiple DRM-free formats sold here, and not with the permanent updates. So this could be useful if you want to read these books on other platforms. I'd say that for Mac users the best references are the David Pogue Missing Manual Series (for Mac OS X Snow Leopard, or the guide to Switching to the Mac (Snow Leopard editions), and the Take Control series guides. They're different in scope -- the Missing Manual is a single, large guide. The Take Control guides are focused and topical, and have a lot of very good and specific pieces of information about backups, mail, the command line, 8.0211n wireless networks, etc. HTH. 50 lashes for me/dom vs group mode
Hi guys: Ok, So, when someone needs humble pie, like, does someone get to throw it at them? Who cuts it and decides the portion size? My issue is that I believe Melissa, my apple trainer may have turned my VO to groups mode. So, when I went to search last evening, I assumed my difficulties had to do with the update. So, now, I have a far better understanding of doom vs group mode. And at this point in my mac life, I think I find Dom a lot easier to work with; at least, on my home page. Moderator note - posting about beta / prerelease software and one-liners
Hi All; Just a couple of quick reminders to let you know that posting anything about beta or prerelease software here on either VIPhone or MacVisionaries is not appropriate. Furthermore, to those who may not know, this is technically illegal and breaks NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) that Apple developers and beta testers must agree to when testing such software. Please do not post change logs or any other such material (or links to such materials) from beta releases of an OS here on either of these lists. Obviously, you're more than welcome to discuss comments you come across on the web concerning an OS before its release, such as those found on legit review sites, however any specific bug reports or material which can only be found by way of access to a developer or beta copy of an OS is strictly forbidden here. So just don't do it! K? You're also more than welcome obviously, to discuss issues and bugs from a released version of an OS but as in the above, keep any specific info which can only be gotten through a beta or developer copy of said OS off both VIPhone and MacVisionaries… Thanks muchly! :) Now as for one-liners (posts with only one line or word in them) or such posts that really have no real Mac / Apple / iOS content in them, once again, just don't do it! :) This is email, not chat. Take the time to put together a note that is worth people's time who don't know you or may not have been following a thread. :) What I mean is explain yourself as if you're talking to someone who just came into the room where you are and hasn't been following what you've been saying or chatting about. This will greatly assist all the listers we have here on VIPhone and MacVisionaries. We're really lucky enough to be developing into quite the large and active communities here so just bare this in mind as you send along your comments to share. You're comments are really important and they are what make these lists great, so take just a couple of minutes to really make them understandable and helpful to as many people as you can.
