Re: iOS 4.3 VoiceOver change log

2011-03-10 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
I am not impressed by the tabs button in Safari being relabled as pages, since
a web-site has multiple pages, but tabs is a different thing altogether, it is
misleading to have a pages button.

iOS 4.3: VoiceOver Feature, Changes, Fixes and Bugs
One more thing, our feature request.

Feature
* with VoiceOver sounds, on power off screen, touch slide to power
off, and will hear drilling sound.

Changes
* In Safari, tabs button is relabeled as pages.
* four-finger swipe up or down gesture (to move to first or previous
element) is now four-finger tap top-half or bottom-half of touch
screen.

Fixed:
* in slider, three-finger swipe up/down will move in units of 8.
* While performing a read-all, slide ring/silent switch will not
interrupt read all.
* If speech is turned off, adjusting volume doesn't turn speech back
on anymore.
* when composing/replying to messages in messages, Skype, TweetList,
IMPlus, and other apps; virtual keyboard is always present and
bluetooth keyboard text entry always works.
* replying to an email, adding recipient(s), VoiceOver focus can be
placed in message body and text can be entered.
* Forwarding an email, adding recipient(s), VoiceOver focus can be
placed in message body and text can be entered.
* On an active call, receive second call, buttons are labeled properly
* With hints off, opening/closing folder gives only tone, no longer
provide VO message about opening/closing folder.

Bugs
* Safari: when tab browsing, switching to different tabs, VoiceOver
will display old tab, not new, must toggle VoiceOver. (old)
* Safari: loading pages, using bluetooth keyboard to go to next
element, will report not found; must return to top and move to next
element. (old)
* Safari: multiple tabs, check tab count, clear out a few tabs, tab
count will still report tab count as if it was never cleared out; must
clear out Safari from app switcher for it to be updated properly.
(new)
* Mail and safari: when HTML content has loaded, says web site
loaded; should not be this verbose with hints off and sounds on.
Loaded sound is more than sufficient. (old)
* Any app/screen, when is loaded/refresh, VO focus is always in top
left; should be position in content area (preferably in last spot,
where one had VO focus). (old)
* Push alert auto-reads time, not message content. (old))
* US TTS set to 100% will partially cut off X and H, partial words,
but still understandable and can tell what letters they are. (partial)
* UK or Australian VoiceOver at 70-100% has speech cut off with a
variety of characters,unusable. (old)
bluetooth keyboard/virtual,
A. keyboard getting stuck
B. reviewing by lines/words/characters. truncates lines, reads entire
paragraph then individual lines, and switching to word doesn't pick
up but instead starts at top of paragraph. Same occurs for when
navigating by lines and switching to words, focus is forced to top.
C. at times, can't toggle quick nab. may have to restart VoiceOver or iPhone
D. no iOS word wrapping, but it exist for iBooks.

Feature Request
* iOS word-wrapping
* iOS shortcut menu: dictionary, Google, etc.
* App switcher: kill all apps
* VoiceOver find
* Text selection and copy in read-only areas
* VoiceOver being smart about where focus is placed
* Option to auto-read push or not at all (not read time)
* Option to route VoiceOver to a different audio output
* Independent VoiceOver volume control without bluetooth keyboard.
* Pitch control
* punctuation control

different positions to reconstruct the full image of the bill. Further, if
this is U.S. currency, you can take advantage of similarity of the bill

are distinct enough to identify the currency uniquely. This could be a
corner that has the denomination amount, the picture of the president in
the front center (Washington for $1, Lincoln for $5, etc.) or the image on
the back center of the same bill (sorry, don't know what these are off the

accessible, alas!) that's running the same way -- the camera has to be on
continuously for a bit to get a match. Looktel really does run fast. At
least on an iPhone 4. I can't speak for the other options, but this app is
certainly working for the iPhone 3GS. It is definitely faster and easier
to use than oMoby. (On that note, I once had a result that identified a $1
bill that was very creased with the amount, but also came up with Google

Try it yourself, and see what you think. I'd say this program is worth it.

Cheree Heppe here:

Having the app vibrate makes sense for deaf blind users or for when quiet ID of
money may be helpful.

Beeping would seem to be redundant, since the app speaks the denominations of
the bills.

It is always better to keepit simple.

Question about backup software

2011-03-10 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi All:

They both allow me to create an image of my HD and even boot it up from a USB
external drive. This is absolutely fantastic!I have played with both Super
Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner.

Can any of you comment on what you like about either program?

I notice that CCC seems to be a free program, whereas, Super Duper is $27.95 to
unlock the full program.

Is there any reason I might want to pay for Super Duper, or, will CCC pretty
much do much of the same thing?

Thanks for any help.

Question about MAC OS X

2011-03-10 Thread Joseph Norton
Hi list:

I'm sorry to be such a bother, but, I am curious about something.

I found the terminal window and was playing around in there. Just for the heck
of it, I typed mail and got the what looked like the standard Unix mail
program.

I tried sending a message, but, of course, it didn't work.

I did get a message back from mailer-daemon.

Does this mean I've got sendmail on here?

Could I set up a domain and use this thing as a small server?

Haven't tried any other terminal stuff yet. Makes me wonder what else if
hidden in each Mac that many of their users don't know a thing about.

Take care!

Re: Question about MAC OS X

2011-03-10 Thread Rose Morales
Joseph,
According to this article, it would appear that Sendmail is part of OS X.
Unfortunately, this article is completely irrelevant for what I want to know.
I'm looking for a tutorial on using Sendmail via the Mac. I suppose I can just
dig up a Unix one and mess around with it if I can't find a Mac one. At any
rate here's the article I was looking at.

http://oreilly.com/pub/ct/51

I'll try and see if I can dig up some more info later, as I'm interested in
this subject due to my own curiosities.

New ipad user, need some app suggestions

2011-03-10 Thread Tony Bernedal
Hi all.
I ordered an iPad to myself for my birthday and it is a iPad 1, didn't see
anything in the ipad 2 that I need at the moment.
Ok, I loaded it with a lot of apps and to my surprise the apps that works on
the iPhone isn't accessible at all with the iPad version. One example is
tweetter app wich is useable on iPhone but completely inaccessible on iPad. I
thought that if a software works on one ios device it would work on another
also with the specific app for the device. but I learned it the hard way that
isn't so.
So I need some suggestions here for a couple of apps.
Twitter, what is the best app for that on ipad.
Rss, I use feeds for iphone at the moment but any other tips for apps that
syncs with google reader on ipad is welcome.
Is it worth it to get pages for iPad?
I think it's all for now. Maybe I'll be back again with more ipad questions
later when I get more used to the device.

Re: Question about backup software

I'd go with CCC. No sense paying 27 bucks for super duper, just to enable you
to do full backups when you can get CCC and get the same functionality for
free. Also, if you ned hourly backups, time machine has you covered. So, time
machine and CCC both mean you're good to go.

A question about Skype 5 and the Mac

2011-03-10 Thread Jes Smith
Hi all,
In previous versions of Skype, I used to be able to hilight a contact and press
enter to call them. Now, in Skype 5, when I press enter Skype brings up a chat
window. How can I change this so that when I press enter, the contact is called
on their Skype account?
Thanks.
Jes

Re: Question about backup software

2011-03-10 Thread Jes Smith
Yes, with time machine you must use a Mac OS X install disk to restore from a
time machine backup.

The trial download for SuperDuper! that does a full clone backup also support
usage in this mode (non-incremental backups) without a purchased license.
CCC also supports incremental backups. Most new users will probably prefer
to use SuperDuper!, because the manual that comes with it goes into more
details about what is involved in backups (in general) and how the program
works. It also has a chattier interface in terms of telling you what it is
doing at any point. People coming in from a linux or unix background may
prefer the CCC style, while other new users may be more anxious to know more
details about what the program is doing, and prefer SuperDuper! Both these
programs allow you to make bootable clones of your current hard drive (which
means that in case of complete drive failure, you can connect the drive to
your machine, power up your Mac while pressing the Option button, then,
when the device is booting, even though VoiceOver is not speaking, you can
press your right or left arrow key followed by the return key to boot up your
Mac. Note that this capability is different from the sort of backup
capability you get with Time Machine).

Re: Question about MAC OS X

2011-03-10 Thread Esther
Hi Rose and Joseph,

FIrst of all, yes, this is the unix Sendmail command. You'd probably get a
better and more complete answer to this from the mac-access list, where there's
been more discussion about various kinds of Terminal usage, and Travis Siegel,
in particular, has posted about set up configurations for Terminal. I'm not
sure what you want to do, but if you want to get a mail system up and running,
you might take a look at the web pages of Cutedge Systems:

http://www.cutedgesystems.com/

Some background: this developer's software is aimed at users who have Mac
minis that they use for small businesses. That is, people who want to take
advantage of the server functions built into their computers, but without
necessarily spending a great deal of time acquiring the technical background to
run these processes. Their MailServe package is $25, for example, and you
might want to take a look at the linked owner's manual for step by step
instructions on setting one up. I originally found this in a web search for a
source of information on Domain Name Server configuration that could be used
for the mac-access list's server transition from Windows to Macs a few years
ago. (This was because some of the server version tools weren't completely
ready at the time, and the person doing the work did not have a linux/unix
background to draw upon). So these tools are not meant to be used if you are,
for example, running mail servers for a living, and really need to keep up with
network security, but they can probably get a basic system up if you're
starting from scratch and need to get a working system without huge expenditure
of cash and time. Please note that I do not use these products myself (nor
have I ever had a Mini or other desktop Mac), so this assessment is based upon
reading the Versiontracker reviews of products like DNS Enabler from a few
years back.

Rose, I'll send you a PDF version of the mail man page offlist. You can
configure your bash shell in Terminal to print out a PostScript version of the
man page that the operating system will convert to PDF. (This is described in
the Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal guide, I believe, if
you bought this through the arrangement on the mac-access list.)

Joseph, probably the best quick summary of the differences between Mac and
linux is the old O'Reilly page on Top Ten Mac OS X Tips for Unix Geeks:
http://macdevcenter.com/lpt/a/2792
Some things, as they note, have changed, such as the use of crontab being
superseded by launchd quite some time ago. For more detailed coverage, you can
find the O'Reilly book, Mac OS X for Unix Geeks (Leopard) by Ernest E.
Rothman, Brian Jepson, and Rick Rothman on Bookshare. (That's the latest
edition; there have been several queries to the publisher about whether there
will be a Snow Leopard version, but one hasn't come out, and we're soon to move
up to Lion.)

If you're interested in joining the Mac-Access list, see their web site:
http://www.mac-access.net/
and look under the links describing their E-mail forums pages. (I think this
is the first time I've used their new domain address.)

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

safari update and I'm absolutely unglued

I did the latest update to Safari let night. For some reason it has rendered
Google search unusable. I'm hoping someone can either reproduce this, or tell

items. Then if I stop interacting with the html content, I can find the search
field. When results come up, there are multiple little groupings to interact

Can anyone give me any insight as to what might be happening here?

David Pogue Missing Manual Series (50% off) are today's O'Reilly eBook Deal of the Day

2011-03-10 Thread Esther
Hi All,

The O'Reilly site has an entry for David Pogue's Missing Manual series at 50%
as an addition to their regular eBook Deal of the Day:

http://oreilly.com/store/dd-pogue.html

This is in celebration of David Pogue's birthday (which I think was actually
yesterday, but the announcement was late, and the web site is still up). So,
for a limited time (possibly through today), you can get any of the David Pogue
Missing Manual series books as eBook bundles for 50% off. That would include
his Switching to the Mac (Snow Leopard) ($11.99), Mac OS X Snow Leopard
($13.99), and others (on the iPhone, Windows 7, etc.) These books (along with
the Take Control books) are also available through iBooks (but only at full
price.) When you buy the ebook bundles directly from O'Reilly, you get
multiple versions that are all DRM-free, and that you can download at any time
from your account. Furthermore, if there are minor revisions and updates, or
new formats become available, you automatically get these. My copy of the
Missing Manual for Mac OS X Snow Leopard comes in versions for iPhone (ePub),
Android, Mobi (other PDA devices), PDF, and Daisy, as an exampl
e. Not all formats are available for all books, but you can check on the
formats that are available, and this range is pretty typical for the slightly
older books, where they started making Daisy format available by working with
Bookshare.

In order to purchase O'Reilly books, you will need to create an account, and
that requires a one-time negotiation of a CAPTCHA. If you purchase from the
linked Deal of the Day page, the Coupon code should automatically be entered
(or you can copy it and try to apply it manually on checkout). When the final
purchase page is updated, before you make the actual purchase, you should see
the discounted price.

In general, the main eBook page is:
http://oreilly.com/ebooks/epub/

After you make your purchase, you'll be pointed to two possible links, that you
can revisit at any later time by logging into your account:

If you're on your computer go to:

https://members.oreilly.com/account/emedia

and login with your user name and password to access any of the formats you
use: ePub, PDF, etc.)

From your iPhone or other mobile device, you can use the mobile emedia site to
download to your device and enter your login:
https://members.oreilly.com/mobile/account/emedia

For US and International Bookshare subscribers, these books are available to
you as part of the service, but not in the multiple DRM-free formats sold here,
and not with the permanent updates. So this could be useful if you want to
read these books on other platforms. I'd say that for Mac users the best
references are the David Pogue Missing Manual Series (for Mac OS X Snow
Leopard, or the guide to Switching to the Mac (Snow Leopard editions), and the
Take Control series guides. They're different in scope -- the Missing Manual
is a single, large guide. The Take Control guides are focused and topical, and
have a lot of very good and specific pieces of information about backups, mail,
the command line, 8.0211n wireless networks, etc.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

50 lashes for me/dom vs group mode

2011-03-10 Thread carolyn Haas

My issue is that I believe Melissa, my apple trainer may have turned my VO to
groups mode. So, when I went to search last evening, I assumed my difficulties
had to do with the update. So, now, I have a far better understanding of doom
vs group mode. And at this point in my mac life, I think I find Dom a lot
easier to work with; at least, on my home page.

I hope perhaps someone reading this will benefit from my learning experience.
And, thanks for all of your suggestions.

Take care

restarting apps

2011-03-10 Thread Chris Snyder
A post on another list made me think of this. I truly hope that in the
development of OS10 Lion, Apple will take into consideration that while being
able to pick up where you left off in an app is often very nice, it is
sometimes necessary and desirable to make a fresh start with an app. I really
hope they will give us the option of starting fresh with all apps. What say you

Boom

2011-03-10 Thread Robert Carter
Hi,

There is a $5 app for the Mac called Boom. It greatly increases the volume of
the Mac's built-in speakers. Has anybody else tried this application? I am in
discussion with the developer trying to figure out to what extent the app is
accessible with VoiceOver. If anybody is working successfully with Boom and
VoiceOver, please get in touch with me.

Moderator note - posting about beta / prerelease software and one-liners

2011-03-10 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All;

Just a couple of quick reminders to let you know that posting anything about
beta or prerelease software here on either VIPhone or MacVisionaries is not
appropriate. Furthermore, to those who may not know, this is technically
illegal and breaks NDAs (non-disclosure agreements) that Apple developers and
beta testers must agree to when testing such software.

Please do not post change logs or any other such material (or links to such
materials) from beta releases of an OS here on either of these lists.

Obviously, you're more than welcome to discuss comments you come across on the
web concerning an OS before its release, such as those found on legit review
sites, however any specific bug reports or material which can only be found by
way of access to a developer or beta copy of an OS is strictly forbidden here.
So just don't do it! K?

You're also more than welcome obviously, to discuss issues and bugs from a
released version of an OS but as in the above, keep any specific info which can
only be gotten through a beta or developer copy of said OS off both VIPhone and
MacVisionaries… Thanks muchly! :)

Now as for one-liners (posts with only one line or word in them) or such posts
that really have no real Mac / Apple / iOS content in them, once again, just
don't do it! :)

This is email, not chat. Take the time to put together a note that is worth
people's time who don't know you or may not have been following a thread. :)
What I mean is explain yourself as if you're talking to someone who just came
into the room where you are and hasn't been following what you've been saying
or chatting about.

This will greatly assist all the listers we have here on VIPhone and
MacVisionaries.

We're really lucky enough to be developing into quite the large and active
communities here so just bare this in mind as you send along your comments to
share. You're comments are really important and they are what make these lists
great, so take just a couple of minutes to really make them understandable and
helpful to as many people as you can. K? the list will love you for it! :)

thanks All and have a wonderful day / evening, wherever you may be!…

Smiles,

Cara :)

Re: NY Times Technology Coverage on the LookTel Money Reader App

2011-03-10 Thread Cara Quinn
My apologies for the cross-post, All… I felt this was important for people on
both lists to see. I'd encourage peeps to read down to Esther's note after
mine. -Thanks!…

Esther;

thanks so much for sending this along!

I posted a comment at:

http://community.nytimes.com/comments/bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/an-iphone-app-helps-the-blind-identify-currency/?permid=25#comment25

-And I thankfully also saw some familiar screen names adding their voices there
as well.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to edit my comment after it was submitted, to add
that the Mac also comes with VO (as the post was talking about iOS exclusively)
but I think the appropriate points were still made. :) I'd love to see more of
our iOS-using listers from VIPhone and MacVisionaries alike adding their voices
as well. Responding to high-profile blogs and such, like this one can be an
excellent opportunity to positively educate and impact the general public as
well as professionals in areas that can likely have a positive effect for all
of us in the future.

Thanks again and do have a wonderful day!…

Smiles,

Cara :)

Currency by Nick Bolton:

http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/an-iphone-app-helps-the-blind-identify-currency/

Could some of our articulate list members get on the blog and post a comment?
The current comments are all of the nature:
How do blind people use a touchscreen? and How would a blind person know the
camera was pointed at the money? The technology is nice but I doubt this will
help the blind very much. and uh… can someone explain to me how a blind
person can operate the iPhone without sight?

You have to register to post. I have to dash, so I can't answer this myself,
but it would be nice if somebody brought this to mainstream attention -- like
the fact that the various iPhone lists probably have over a thousand unique
subscribers.

Re: Question about backup software

2011-03-10 Thread Tyler wood
I bought super duper. Best $30 I ever spent.

I used CCC and the drive currupted itself, but that might have been just me.

Nonetheless, I love this program - the smart update is totally swell.

Keep in mind that, while CCC is free to try, it is shareware, which means you
should pay for it if you use it. Freeloading off of developers who are kind
enough to let one try an app prior to paying is bad all the way around. If
everybody did that, those developers who offer applications this way would
have to stop. Anybody who can afford to buy a Mac can afford to pay $10 or so
for CCC once you try and like it.

Re: Boom

2011-03-10 Thread Tyler wood
Hmm.

Um, how much louder is this? My mac speakers are sufficiently loud for the
things I do with it.
Not sure how this could increase the volume without blowing the speakers.

I use carbon copy cloner, I did also purchase super duper since that's also a
great program, they both work equally well.

Can any of you comment on what you like about either program?

I notice that CCC seems to be a free program, whereas, Super Duper is $27.95
 to unlock the full program.

Is there any reason I might want to pay for Super Duper, or, will CCC pretty
much do much of the same thing?

 Thanks for any help.

adium not working with facebook chat?

2011-03-10 Thread johns.kary
Hi list.
It's more then possible I've missed discussions on this, but I'm way! behind on
email.

Using adium with Facebook chat, I'm receiving friends initial
messages, but nothing after that.
There not getting any replies I send, and I don't get all there messages either.

One friend told me I kept going on and off line, although on my end it still
said I was online.

MSN still seams to work with adium although occasionally a message will go
astray.
Does anyone no what might be going on hear?

Thanks for any thoughts.

Kari.

moving iTunes library

2011-03-10 Thread Chris Snyder
Hi all,
I have recently realized that my iTunes library is taking up way too much space
on my primary hard drive. I'd like to move all of the content to my portable
hard drive and have iTunes access the files from there. Is there an easy way to
do this without losing all my playlists and such?
Friendly,
Chris

Re: moving iTunes library

2011-03-10 Thread Ricardo Walker
Yeah,

Just move your entire iTunes folder to your external harddrive. Then in iTunes
preferences, pick advanced from the toolbar. Now press the change button and
select the iTunes media folder located inside the iTunes folder you just copied
to your external drive in the file browser that will open up.
