Re: voiceover web item rotor not displaying m.facebook.com page refreshes

2011-07-07 Thread Eric Oyen
thats not entirely correct. it did it on other parts of the site (not just
search). it took finally terminating webkit/safari and restarting just to get
things working again. it seems that once this problem started, it affected
operations on other open tabs as well.

That wasn't the only part of the rotor affected. links wouldn't display. In
fact, all rotors under web items (page controls, tables, links, headers, even
images all stated zero items. yet, if I manually sifted through the page, there
were like 100 or so links, 2 dozen images and a number of headers. until today,
this had never happened before and the only website it happened on initially
was m.facebook.com (and quickly affected the rest of the browser requiring a
restart). so, its either a never before seen bug, or a breakage in Facebook
causing corruption of the browser communications with the voiceover API.
Unfortunately, this is not my area of expertise and I can only make gross
assumptions at this point.

Hi,

to each there own of course but, I'm not sure why waiting seems so
attractive. If you don't like it, just pop back in your snow leopard DVD
and re install that. IDK. If you know your going to by it regardless, why
wait? I'm fairly confident Apple wouldn't release it if it had some
catastrophic flaw. And like i said, if its just a case of not liking it, you
can just go back to SL. Reviews can only take you so far.

Hello Christopher,

For some reason, I always thought one could completely reset all

Now keep in mind that I came by this idea back when OS 8 was the big

So, in no way am I suggesting that you do this but I'm hoping that more
experienced users on the list will either confirm or correct this notion.

I use a program called Superduper to keep a complete clone of all the

Wouldn't a braille keyboard be nice?

2011-07-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I was just thinking...

I wonder if there is a way to somehow type on my macbook as if it were a
braille keyboard. for example, the letters f d and s would be dots 1, 2, and
3, and j k and l be dots 4, 5, and 6. So if I wanted to type, say the letter
d, I'd hit the letters f, j and k all together. If I wanted say an h, I'd hit
the letters f, d, and k all together, etc.

Obviously, I'd want it to be global where I could do this regardless what
window had fovus while still being able to maintain normal voiceover navigation.

Do you all see this as something I should write apple some feedback about? I
think this would be a really full-on feature, provided that there isn't
already, even with a 3rd party app or keyboard layout to do this.

I think it would be lots more practicle to have a cute little USB or bluetooth
Braille keyboard. If there were such a device,
assuming it was affordible, I would buy it in a heartbeat. I just can't imagine
pressing multiple typing keys to make the
braille letters. My hands wouldn't do that. But a USB or bluetooth braille
keyboard would probably be super tiny and
portible. I wonder if any adaptive tech companies have thought to come up with
a device like that.

would this accomplish? Is typing on a braille keyboard generally faster

Hmm. Maybe they do, but how expensive is it? Also, I thought it only worked
with the Ios devices: the ITouch and the IPhone.
I could be wrong, though. It certainly wouldn't be the first time.

You can find that in the Preference Network pane on your Mac. The Status

Over a network you can mount Mac file shares on your PC. On the Mac
you'll need to turn on File Sharing in the Sharing Preference and go to
Options to turn on Share files and folders using SMB and then enable
which accounts on your mac are allowed in from Windows. Once all that is
done from your windows side you can just connect a new network drive
with your Mac's address. So on the PC you would connect to something
like 192.168.xx.yy\username and then chose to connect using a different
user name and it will prompt you for the mac username/password. So my
username is just cblouch so I connect to //192.168.xx.yy/cblouch where
xx and yy are my actual IP address and the username is cblouch with
whatever the password is I use on the Mac. After that you should have a
new drive letter and be able to access all the files and folders in your

Are you sure of this? I think I perhaps you missunderstood what Mike is
going to do. I think he's going to burn the .pkg installer of Lion directly to
his own blandk DVD as we found could be done; and then, run his Mac off the DVD
and go from there.

  Is that right Mike?

We should be able to install it without sighted help, it can be
installed as an upgrade, though I plan to make an install disk, erase my hard
drive and install from scratch, installing a version of an operating system
over the top of another is a recipe for problems.

Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-07 Thread Dan
Hello List,
JUst some thoughts on prepairing for Lion.
I set up CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and I really love it. It's extremely easy to
use and it's 100% accessible for VO users.

Not only is it easy to make a complete clone, or a incremental backup, it's
also really easy to boot from and use it on the external drive.
The log details are well written andeasy to understand.
Restoring the original drive is also really easy to do.

CCC is produced on a shareware kind of concept and it uses a donation request
field. This is available within CCC as well as on the site.

http://www.bombich.com/

So, why am I posting this?
In light of Lion's upcoming launch, I just wanted to really be prepared. No
matter what you use as a backup utility, CCC or Super Duper or any other backup
package, I strongly suggest that you cover all bases and be completely ready
for the new exciting move to Lion!

I was unaware that Auto tune even was accessible or not, compatible with the
Mac platform. That is totally! cool! I very! very! heavily rely on it with
my windows audio production machine in sonar. If I could get something that
would basically automatically with no configuration act as a VST and do the
same thing, that would be incredible!

So, I'm right with you, bud, if anyone! knows anything at all, do let us

Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-07 Thread Dan
Hello Christopher,
Have fun getting CCC to work for you, I think you'll love it.

Here's a little hint for all us VoiceOver users.

Once you've set up CCC and have entered your password to start what ever
process you are using, for example, a complete clone, here's a way to make sure
you are able to track what's going on.

After the process has started, just toggle VO off then back on. Then you will
be in the actual results window. I've tried using the keyboard to switch to the
actual activity window, but for some reason, I cant get it to work.

So again, just toggle VO off and then back on to be where the action is.

Then just VO right or left to examine the different parts of the activity as
it's taking place.

In the past, I've used Super Duper and Time MAchine. So I decided to take a
really close look at CCC. In my humble opinion, CCC tops them all. Again, just
how I see it.

HTH!

Frankly, I'd say Syrinx. I use the other one, but I'm probably gonna switch
and go back to Syrinx. I find that Syrinx has a few more features and
frankly, is ever, ever! so slightly easier to set up and configure.

Best of luck. I know how wonderful the feeling was when I got my Mac last
April, so believe me, if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
that's what we're all here for. We're a real loving opened family of users,

just how awesome the Mac world for a blind person can truely be.

2011-07-07 Thread Missy Hoppe
Thanks for this. I installed CCC a couple of weeks ago, but haven't actually
tried to use it yet. I'm sure I'll be checking
it out before Lion happens; am especially hoping that using something like CCC
will preserve my app preferences for Adium and
things of that nature. I have a little external hard drive that I just got for
the mac. I've used it for time machine
backups; can I use that same drive with CCCas well? I still don't understand
everything about the mac, so will probably still
ask stupid questions from time to time.

Hello List,
JUst some thoughts on prepairing for Lion.
I set up CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and I really love it. It's extremely easy to
use and it's 100% accessible for VO users.

Not only is it easy to make a complete clone, or a incremental backup, it's
also really easy to boot from and use it on the
external drive.
The log details are well written andeasy to understand.
Restoring the original drive is also really easy to do.

CCC is produced on a shareware kind of concept and it uses a donation request
field. This is available within CCC as well as
on the site.

So, why am I posting this?
In light of Lion's upcoming launch, I just wanted to really be prepared. No
matter what you use as a backup utility, CCC or
Super Duper or any other backup package, I strongly suggest that you cover all
bases and be completely ready for the new
exciting move to Lion!

Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-07 Thread Dan
Hello,
You can make different backups. Generally speaking, CCC completely copies your
drive from one drive to another. Not just one file, the actual clone.
Of course you can also backup to dmg files as well and restore as well, this
would give your single file inclosure.
The documentation is concise and really clearly lays out all the scenarios for
backup and restore.

 Hello Christopher,
Have fun getting CCC to work for you, I think you'll love it.

Here's a little hint for all us VoiceOver users.

Once you've set up CCC and have entered your password to start what ever
process you are using, for example, a complete clone, here's a way to make
sure you are able to track what's going on.

After the process has started, just toggle VO off then back on. Then you
will be in the actual results window. I've tried using the keyboard to
switch to the actual activity window, but for some reason, I cant get it to
 work.

Again,
 just how I see it.

not an expert in using it, but I tried Syrinx for about half an hour, and was

Oh Wow! I must have really missed something when I tried playing with syrinx.
It made absolutely no sense to me. The other
one, once you're in the right table, couldn't be simpler. You use plain arrow

if you could please explain its basic command

I know that, but I was saying without CCC in the equasion. I meant more or

where in my finder do I navigate, what file/folders do I need to back up,
and later, how would I reimport 'em? Again, I know CCC will back this up,

Re: Looking for the most accessible twitter client

2011-07-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
The thing about Syrinx you gotta understand which throws a lot of people is,
yeah, if you go to the top of the screen then vo+right arrow, you'll get an
edit box, and yeah you can then interact with the next and vo+down arrow to
see all the tweets from your followers, but you can't do much with that text
area. what you actually wanna do, is instead of interacting with that text
area as most people unknowingly try doing, if you don't, but instead just
keep hitting vo+right arrow, you'll get to an actual table with all your
tweets. Now, if you interact with this, that's! where the magic is.

Oh Wow! I must have really missed something when I tried playing with
syrinx. It made absolutely no sense to me. The other
one, once you're in the right table, couldn't be simpler. You use plain
arrow keys to scroll through tweets and command left
and right arrow to change tabs. I'd be open to trying syrinx again, but
especially as a newbie, it made absolutely no sense
to me. I really wish it would have, because I do like the name a lot
better, so if you could please explain its basic command

structure, I'd really appreciate it a bunch!

Hmm. Perhaps I'll have to give Syrinx another try at some point, but over all,
the other 1 makes perfect sense and does
exactly what I want it to, and whatever features it doesn't have, I haven't
missed them yet. I still prefer to use Qwitter
for the most part, but am using my macbook as a backup until qwitter is updated
to work with twitter's new authorization
scheme. So yeah, the client that isn't syrinx is meeting my needs just fine,
but I might be brave and try it again at some
point.
Once I got to that table you spoke of, how would I switch between buffers in
syrinx, and what about sending tweets and stuff?
I guess it just wasn't intuitive enough for my state of mac newbieness. LOL!

Re: Looking for the most accessible twitter client

2011-07-07 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I think command+N is for a new tweet. It's either that're command+T. It's
been a while since I've used Syrinx, so I'm a little rusty on the command
shortcut keys, but they're all in the menu bar, I promise you. As for
switching buffers, I think if I understand correctly, the latest, most
recent version has checkboxes you can check if you wanna only view DM's,
mentions, etc. Then to view everything again all in one unified table, just
make sure all the boxes are unchecked.

I know my friend Ben uses Syrinx and absolutely loves it. And he likes it
mainly for that reason that switching buffers was so easy. Ben, if you
could chime in here, and give Missy a hand with this, I'm sure she'd really
appreciate it.

Re: Is This Possible And How?

2011-07-07 Thread Chris Blouch
Usually you can only format local drives. Why do you need to format it
if you can already access it? You can format a drive on the Mac but it
only does FAT and exFAT, not NTFS. I guess I missed that last part in
your original email that you wanted to access the drive on your Mac from
your PC to format it, not to access the files. I know with laptops you
could boot up in Target mode by holding down the T key which turned the
laptop into a very expensive external firewire hard drive. You could
then hook it up to a PC's firewire port and do whatever you want to the
internal drive. Generally formatting will always require local hard
wired access to the hard drive for the machine that is doing the formatting.

You can find that in the Preference Network pane on your Mac. The Status

Original message:

Over a network you can mount Mac file shares on your PC. On the Mac
you'll need to turn on File Sharing in the Sharing Preference and
go to

Options to turn on Share files and folders using SMB and then enable
which accounts on your mac are allowed in from Windows. Once all
that is

done from your windows side you can just connect a new network drive
with your Mac's address. So on the PC you would connect to something
like 192.168.xx.yy\username and then chose to connect using a
different

user name and it will prompt you for the mac username/password. So my
username is just cblouch so I connect to //192.168.xx.yy/cblouch where
xx and yy are my actual IP address and the username is cblouch with
whatever the password is I use on the Mac. After that you should
have a
new drive letter and be able to access all the files and folders in
your

username folder on your Mac.

Hello Dan,

Thank you for some really great info.

Just curious, you wrote that you believe Carbon Copy to be better than

carbon copy application.

Please do not interpret my question as being provocative; I just wanted your

Thank you.

 Hello Christopher,

Here's a little hint for all us VoiceOver users.

Once you've set up CCC and have entered your password to start what ever
process you are using, for example, a complete clone, here's a way to make
sure you are able to track what's going on.

After the process has started, just toggle VO off then back on. Then you will
be in the actual results window. I've tried using the keyboard to switch to
the actual activity window, but for some reason, I cant get it to work.

Again,
 just how I see it.

 Hello List,
JUst some thoughts on prepairing for Lion.
I set up CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and I really love it. It's extremely easy
to use and it's 100% accessible for VO users.

Not only is it easy to make a complete clone, or a incremental backup, it's
also really easy to boot from and use it on the external drive.
The log details are well written andeasy to understand.
Restoring the original drive is also really easy to do.

CCC is produced on a shareware kind of concept and it uses a donation
request field. This is available within CCC as well as on the site.

 http://www.bombich.com/

So, why am I posting this?
In light of Lion's upcoming launch, I just wanted to really be prepared. No
matter what you use as a backup utility, CCC or Super Duper or any other
backup package, I strongly suggest that you cover all bases and be
completely ready for the new exciting move to Lion!

Re: Adium, Was: Re: Just my thoughts regarding CCC Carbon Copy Cloner

2011-07-07 Thread Dan
Hello,
After you start CCC and have everything set up for your incremental backup You
would probably have to examine the table that contains everything to be backed
up and just select what you want. It's a really involved table and you should
really know what you want.
Sorry I'm not more help than this.

later, how would I reimport 'em? Again, I know CCC will back this up, but
I[m getting at more specifically with Adium itself, how do I do this? that's

 Hello,
Generally speaking, CCC will truly make a clone of your drive, so all
 settings will be preserved.
You can then boot from your machines hard drive or the bootable external
 drive.

Thanks for this. I installed CCC a couple of weeks ago, but haven't
actually tried to use it yet. I'm sure I'll be checking
it out before Lion happens; am especially hoping that using something like
CCC will preserve my app preferences for Adium and
things of that nature. I have a little external hard drive that I just got
for the mac. I've used it for time machine
backups; can I use that same drive with CCCas well? I still don't
understand everything about the mac, so will probably still
ask stupid questions from time to time.

JUst some thoughts on prepairing for Lion.
I set up CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and I really love it. It's extremely easy
to use and it's 100% accessible for VO users.

Not only is it easy to make a complete clone, or a incremental backup, it's
also really easy to boot from and use it on the
 external drive.
The log details are well written andeasy to understand.
Restoring the original drive is also really easy to do.

CCC is produced on a shareware kind of concept and it uses a donation

2011-07-07 Thread Dan
Hello,
No problem at all.
While I know that many people really love Super Duper, that wasn't my
experience.
I had some really funky things go drastically wrong with Super Duper a few
years back and so I shied away from it. Plus I like the completely uncluttered
screen in CCC.
I don't know that this really has anything to do with it or not, but over the
years, I've done a lot within the Unix and Linux environments, as well as
really getting in to the terminal in OS X.
HTH!

I've tried using the keyboard to
switch to the actual activity window, but for some reason, I cant get it to
 work.

Again,
 just how I see it.

 HTH!

Site to check app compatibility with Lion

2011-07-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

Here's a site where you can check an app's compatibility with Lion.
 http://roaringapps.com

You have to click on View as grid to be able to see the status. The apps then
appear as level 4 headings so you can find the app you want in the Web Rotor.

I checked on ABBYY FineReader and it's listed as not being compatible. Gr!

Cheers,

Anne

possibly getting back to the mac

2011-07-07 Thread anouk radix
Hi everyone, I have been away from the mac community since april 2010
(although i did buy an iphone in september'. I am thinking of getting
back into it when the new macbook air is released and if it fullfills
the hopes that I have for it. I have heard rumors that it will be
released nearly immediately with mac osx lion, has anyone heard
confirmation about this= I was also wondering if all the standard apple
apps will still be accessible within lion and if anyone knows if there
will also be a new iwork version soon.

Furthermore there were a few programs that I wanted to use on the mac
but were not accessible or not all THAt accessible at the time. For
example at that time there was no really good usenet client or a client
to play online game swith )muds'. I was wondering if this has changed
now. I was also wondering if garageband is now accessible and if the
seem is true for protools=
Vuze )for torrents' didnt really work back then, i was wondering if this
is still the case.
I know we had just gotten finereader when I stopped using hte mac but
that it only was a light version and a version 9 at that, i was
wondering if there are now any more ocr offerings on the mac platform=
A lot of questions I know but it might help me to decide wether or not
to get back onto the mac wagon.

Thanks in advance for any information,
Greetings, Anouk,

From what I've read, you only need to have Snow Leopard in order to
download Lion from the Mac App Store. It doesn't actually need Snow
Leopard to run the installer and you can apparently boot it from either a
DVD or a USB drive.

I've tried to find official confirmation of this though and haven't been

App Store and tell us what it says.

export PATH=./:$PATH

That adds the ./ location plus all the existing path settings. Now you should
be able to just run foo from wherever you are without putting the ./ in
front.

This is not recommended, however. All you need is some nasty script or
whatever to plonk something in your working directory that has the same
name as a standard system program (e.g. ls) and you could find yourself
running their nasty program instead of the program you meant to run.

Of course, if you used:

echo PATH=$PATH:.

instead, at least it would search in the standard search path before
finding your local binary. But personally I prefer just to type ./
before whatever it is I want to run. At least I'm meaning to run the
program.

We don't have XCode for our mac so I couldn't try it there. I did try it

it worked fine.

I'd be interested to know what caused your issue if you ever manage to

audio recording software

instead of lectures. I also want the ability to be able to edit the
recordings, including splicing in content or parts of content and
removing old content and updating it, without having to do a re-
recording of the entire presentation. What software would you
recommend for this task? I have the latest Macbook Air, 4gb ram,
2.1ghz processor and 256gb ss drive.

I am fairly new to the mac, so please feel free to give me even the
most obvious solutions.

Take care,

I really like the one that is hard to spell and pronounce. The English
translation of that word is Night Owl. It's quite easy to use.

I used Syrinx for a little while, but found it a little clunky. I do know that

You might try one, and then the other, just to see which you like better.
That's what I ended up doing.

I've tried using the keyboard to
switch to the actual activity window, but for some reason, I cant get it to
 work.

Again,
 just how I see it.

 HTH!

 Hello List,
JUst some thoughts on prepairing for Lion.
I set up CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner) and I really love it. It's extremely
easy to use and it's 100% accessible for VO users.

Not only is it easy to make a complete clone, or a incremental backup,
it's also really easy to boot from and use it on the external drive.

No matter what you use as a backup utility, CCC or Super Duper or any other
backup package, I strongly suggest that you cover all bases and be
completely ready for the new exciting move to Lion!

Dear all,

I am a university lecturer, and I want to record podcasts for students
instead of lectures.

Take care,

hit command I. Interact with this scroll area and all the information you will
