This should open the inspector. From there there are a few tabs like

 Hope this helps.

Re: SPSS for Mac?

2012-06-07 Thread Claus Thøgersen

Hi,

Spss especially version 19 on Windows did not work at all until IBM
released a hotfix.
It seems that version 20 works fine out of the box on Windows as long as
you follow the guide to copy one file to get the java access bridge to work.
Of course you need to know that there are special instructions to get
the access bridge to work.

I am looking into the Mac version now, and will report back when I have
it installed.
From what IBM says Voiceover is supposed to work out of the box, since
there are no access bridge needed to get java to work on the Mac.

Re: interacting was question for all voice over trainers: trouble interacting with items

2012-06-07 Thread David Griffith
I think sometimes we get hung up on the word interaction.
I have entered this thread late but actually with screen readers on \Windows
systems we often have to interact. It is not called interaction so we do not
recognise it as such.
For example in a Windows save as dialogue you have to tab to get to container
panes where it is possible to navigate folder structures.
This is interaction by another name.
On web pages even with Jaws or NVDA it is often necessary to interact with an
edit box before you can type into it. This is done with the enter key or
space but it still interaction. Jaws has an auto mode but this will not work
if you are using single letter navigation to jump between edit boxes and you
will have to interact to enter text.
I am glad that I use interaction with Tab key on the Mac which makes things
easier and numpad commander 7 and 9 keys also makes life easier.
I agree the concept needs more formal understanding on the Mac but it is
present in some form on all screen reading PC Platforms I think. so I think
people need to relax into the concept and recognise that it is not completely
alien when you analyse it.

VO getting stuck on certain webpages?

2012-06-07 Thread Will Cummings
Hi all,

Over the weekend I picked up a MacBook Pro, thanks in large part to the
words of wisdom and advice coming from this listserv. A big thanks to
everyone for just being here to help us Mac-Noobs when we're trying to
figure everything out.

And now for an insanely frustrating problem I'm encountering. Not sure how
many (if any) of you guys are in Canada, but the CNIB has a digital library
which I use regularly for reading the newspaper, and so far I've only
experienced this problem on their website - not sure if the website would
have anything to do with this. I've been trying to learn and use VO to get
a feel for how it works and sounds, and when I went to use it to read the
paper this morning, after I got to a certain section of the site - right
where you choose what newspaper and everything after that I've tried - I
can't get the VO cursor off of the toolbar. It will tell me I'm on the
toolbar, I can try to move to the html content, but when I try to interact
with the html content and/or navigate into the html content I get bounced
back onto the toolbar. I also can't seem to get it out of full screen
mode, so I only have about six elements (back, forward, address, google
search, and downloads). I've tried everything I could think of that might
be causing the problem, like playing with the web rotor, restarting VO,
checking the settings, restarting Safari, but it seems that nothing has
worked.

Has this or anything like this happened to anyone? Is it something I'm
doing or not doing (correctly or incorrectly)? Any help would be greatly
appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Will

Re: Renaming Files

2012-06-07 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Eric,

I realized that my question wasn't clear enough. I have a document called
training report that I use to create my reports. I have a template with
various headings, I fill in the text I wish, and then want to save it under a
different name. If I rename the original document in Finder, that won't help
me here, as I want to retain the original training report, and with each report
I prepare, I want to assign the client's name to the filename. Hope this makes
more sense.

Re: Renaming Files

2012-06-07 Thread Steve Holmes
I think this is where the Duplicate file command comes in.
Unfortunately, they don't have a hot key assigned to this yet but you
can get there from the File submenu. When you choose that option, you
should be prompted for a new file name. As a side note, I heard a
lengthy conversation about Save as and duplicate on a podcast the
other day. I think a lot of people miss the Save as function in Lion
but instead the file is automatically saved and updated and you have
to revert to get back to older versions of that file. As I understand
it, this duplicate function will copy your file that you're presently
editing and allow you to rename the duplicated file. I heard in this
same podcast that Mountain Lion will offer a hot key (Shift-Command-S
and you will be automatically placed in the title area where you can
change the file name.

Re: Renaming Files

2012-06-07 Thread Steve Holmes
I wasn't sure if you could automatically rename the file right after
duplicating or not; haven't used this feature much yet. I think this
concept is harder to get used to when we had it the other way on other
platforms for so long. You might also try dup/renaming the file in
finder first and then go into the editor of your choice on the newly
named file. That would protect the original file for sure.

Hi,

What you describe of a template file, is supported. You should find
a stationary check box in the get info field. Stationary, lets you
open up a template document and will force you to save it under a new
name without altering the original. I do not run Lion, but I am
fairly certain this is supported still. Please check it out and give
it a try.

Get Info dialog is saying things the wrong way round with Voiceover on Mac OSX Lion version 7.4 how to fix it?

2012-06-07 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all, running Lion V7.4 I have noticed Voiceover is saying stuff the wrong
way round. For example.
If I command I on my Macintosh HD, and go to the latest version it will say it
in the following way. 10.7.4 Version. Previously when I brought my Mac, the
correct way it would say it is, Version, 10.7.4
So as you can see unless its the new way of doing things in the Get info dialog
box that came out in this update, Voiceover is saying it the wrong way round.
This also applys when looking at a song in iTunes.

Has anyone else incounted this issue and if you fixed it what did you do?

Thanks Much

Daniel

Re: Renaming Files

2012-06-07 Thread erik burggraaf
Hi Les, I have the same issue with as a trainer required to generate reports
and invoices to account for every hour with every client. I started out by
opening the form, filling it out, pressing command shift S and using the save
as dialog to rename the form to a new name containing the invoice or report
number and the client's name. The problem I ran into was that Occasionally I'd
forget and press command S, saving my new invoice overtop of my blank form and
forcing me to generate a new blank form. I'm not really a dope, smile. I just
hate paperwork like the dickins and would fill out several at a time on
autopilot instead of doing them as I went.

After pooching 10 or 20 forms this way I finally got fed up and started a new
system. I go into finder.
When I hit on my invoice form I do a command C and a command v just like that,
slap slap.
That forces finder to paste a new copy of the form slightly renamed right
beside the original.
I then arrow to the copy, rename it with the invoice number and name, then fill
out the form.

Hope this helps,

Erik Burggraaf

Re: Get Info dialog is saying things the wrong way round with Voiceover on Mac OSX Lion version 7.4 how to fix it?

Sure, example, the way it is saying it now is: Rockschool Artist use to be
Artist Rockschool.
Another example is the year of the track. Use to be Year 2001 now it says 2001
year.
So its reading the tags the wrong way round. This is happening for me in any
get info command I do it on. In iTunes on Macintosh HD any app etc.
Hope this makes sense.

I had a similar problem earlier this month with the PDF files I

 Hi Donna,

What's likely is that the file you're trying to download doesn't have
a file name extension (for example, it could be a PDF file which does
not have the .pdf extension as part of its name), or perhaps the
server from which you are retrieving the file has not set this up for
automatic download. If the files you are trying to retrieve are zip-
compressed or otherwise use some archived format, then they almost
always download. However, depending on how the server machine from
which you retrieve the files is set up, if the file extension type is
not present, or is one for which a default download action is not set
up, it's likely to be treated as a text file, and simply displayed
in the browaser. This is not something that you control by any
settings at your end (called the client side); it is a server side
setting. If the source web page was designed by someone who is not
aware of these issues, then whether the file is downloaded or
displayed depends on default settings of the browser version/operating
 system being used.

Could you download the file (that was being displayed as code in
Safari), by pressing Command-L to highlight the address of the
downloaded file, and then pressing Return? That usually works for
me if I don't want to fiddle with the link options and Control-click
 on the link.

The best bet, I think, is to write software to calculate whatever stats
one needs (or to have someone else do so, if one does not know how to
code). The Python programming language appears to be a good candidate for
this purpose. Your student might get some pointers as to how to go about

MBA keeps locking up/VoiceOVer static

2012-06-07 Thread Lindsay Yazzolino
Hi Everybody,

I am using one of the newest generation models of the MacBook Air, and have
been encountering a rather worrisome problem. The Air has begun to constantly
overheat and lock up, necessitating a system restart each time. In addition,
VoiceOVer will sometimes become highly distorted, such that it creates
ear-splitting, screeching static. THis has been happening even when I have been
running only one or two applications, such as Safari, and the Air is almost
brand-new. Has anyone here experienced such issues, and know of any potential
solutions. i'm thinking this may warrant a trip to the Apple Store, but thought
I'd ask in the meantime. THanks in advance!

Re: VO getting stuck on certain webpages?

2012-06-07 Thread Will Cummings
Hi Daniel,

I think that more or less solved the problem. I've at least got a way
to move into the page where I want to read and/or work and can then
start moving around again. One thing I noticed with this fix at
least this time was that when I first tabbed into the page I had to
use tab and enter to interact with the links I wanted - the VO
commands didn't want to kick in. Going forward a page and then back
seemed to fix that problem. Weird. Ah, the fun of playing with new
computers and OS's.

Much thanks for your help!

Will

On 07/06/2012, Daniel McGee danielmcgee...@googlemail.com wrote:
Hi Will, have you tried the tab key?
Sometimes, I have had times where VO doesn't automatically interact with the
document so I have to go to the HTML content area interact with it and its
working again. Or like I said I use the tab key to just get me into the area
and then use VO navigation keys that are needed whatever I'm doing.
To get this tab key working go into safari preps with command comma, go to
the toolbar go to the last tab which is called advanced, make sure you
interact with the toolbar 1st though select the advance tab stop
interacting. Finally, VO right to you hear, press tab to highlight each item
on a webpage. If this is not already checked then check it with VO space
bar. Then close the window with command W. This will then save the change
you made. Try your problem again and see if it resolves it.
Just so you know though that what I have suggested is more of a suggestion
than a fix. It works for me and I hope it does for you!

 Good Luck

And now for an insanely frustrating problem I'm encountering. Not sure
how many (if any) of you guys are in Canada, but the CNIB has a digital
library which I use regularly for reading the newspaper, and so far I've
only experienced this problem on their website - not sure if the website
would have anything to do with this. I've been trying to learn and use VO
to get a feel for how it works and sounds, and when I went to use it to
read the paper this morning, after I got to a certain section of the site
 - right where you choose what newspaper and everything after that I've
tried - I can't get the VO cursor off of the toolbar. It will tell me I'm
on the toolbar, I can try to move to the html content, but when I try to
interact with the html content and/or navigate into the html content I get
bounced back onto the toolbar. I also can't seem to get it out of full
screen mode, so I only have about six elements (back, forward, address,
google search, and downloads). I've tried everything I could think of
that might be causing the problem, like playing with the web rotor,
restarting VO, checking the settings, restarting Safari, but it seems that
 nothing has worked.

Has this or anything like this happened to anyone? Is it something I'm
doing or not doing (correctly or incorrectly)? Any help would be greatly
 appreciated!

 Thanks in advance,

 Will

Syncing Google contacts

2012-06-07 Thread Lindsay Yazzolino
Hi All,

I just set up an MS Exchange account on my iPhone 4 running iOS 5, with the
intent to sync my Google contacts with those on my iPHone. I enabled both
calendar and contacts in my account settings, yet when I checked my Exchange
contacts group, I noticed that only some of my contacts had appeared to sync. I
checked this again after restarting my phone and nothing changed. Is there a
reason why some of my contacts might sync, but not others. Is it possible that
some of my contacts may be flagged differently within Google itself, preventing
them from being synced? In particular, some of my newer contacts do not appear
to have made it to my iPHone. My iphone is set up with iCloud, and
I also have two Macs, both of which are set up to sync with iCloud and Google.
I know that syncing configurations can be a bit complicated to explain, so
please feel free to ask for clarification. Thanks in advance for any
suggestions!

Hello everyone. You can save a clean form as a template and stamp new ones
out all day long. I do this in Numbers and I see no reason why this wouldn't
work in pages as well, you just save the form as a template and create new

each report I prepare, I want to assign the client's name to the filename.
Hope this makes more sense.

To

finding other sources for GarageBand loops and importing them into GarageBand

2012-06-07 Thread Jessica Carter
Hello Everyone,

Been playing with GarageBand over the past few months, and have been enjoying
it quite a bit.

I am interested in obtaining more loops/samples for GarageBand.
Recently I tried a program that had lots of loops in it, but the application
was not VoiceOver accessible.

Any help with accessible apps, or info on obtaining loops and samples would be
greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

How to make a word a URL

2012-06-07 Thread Blinkin
Hey all,
So I have a blog and learned how to format a word and assign a URL to
it so people can click the word instead of having an entire URL there.
Well I tried to put a link to my YouTube and Twitter accounts and for some
reason when I click on those links it puts my website and the website I am
trying to link to in the URL together.
I checked when I formatted these and I know I just put the Twitter and
YOuTube links but my blog is automatically inserting it's URL first.
Any ideas on how to fix this?
Thank you all!

Hi,

If you check amazon, you can probably still find some copies of Jam Packs for
Garageband. They are no longer being made or sold by Apple but, they are still
out there.
