Scott MacIntyre's book

2012-08-12 Thread Rahul Bajaj
 Hi all,

I realize that this question probably does not strictly follow the
guidelines of the list, but I think it's worth giving a try as some of you
might be able to help me.
So, I wish to read the book called By Faith, not By sight, the autobiography
of Scott MacIntyre, who has accomplished many great feats, like being the
first visually impaired American Idol finalist.
I wish to read the book on my Mac in any format which is accessible with
 VoiceOver.
So, please let me know if you are aware of any website from where I can
purchase the book in an accessible format.

Your help would be much appreciated.

 Cheers,
 Rahul

Yes u can each have your own iCloud accounts If you have created separate apple

Re: voiceover isn't working anymore on my macbook air (part 2) help pls!

2012-08-12 Thread William Windels
Hello Joseph,
Thx for the information, I didn't know that this was the place of the
prefferences of voiceover.

And idd, i can do what you suggest but, 2 remarks about this:
Since this seems a bug for me , I woulud like to see any errors/warnings about
the loading of my userprofile.
Where could I find this information?
And also, Is it possible to delete the prefferences of user william with
administrator rights while I am logged in as guest?
Or , can I simply enter the user William and the corresponding password to do
this?

Or, I could do it from the recovery partition with the terminal?
kind regards and thx for the remarks

Just a thought, and, sorry if someone has already mentioned it before, but,
if you look in your user account's Library/Preferences folder, (from what I
can tell, it would be /Users/william/Library/Preferences), you can find the
VoiceOver configuration files. The file names start with
com.apple.VoiceOver. If you delete those files and start VoiceOver anew,
 that might fix the problem.

It will get rid of your speech settings and voiceover preferences, but, since
VO isn't working for you right now, that may not be a problem. Just keep
 that in mind.

 Dear Listers,

Since the news of Mountain Lion - I still run Lion - I've been reading a lot
about how to make sure I install it as well as possible. Jo Kissell in his
Take Control of upgrading to Mountain Lion strongly recommends verifying
one's disk for possible errors because if an error is present, this might
cause problems during and after the installation. At first I was a bit
reluctant to do this because my macbook air is relatively new (end of 2010),
and has a solid drive, and I thought, oh no, it is surely fine. But today I
actually did perform the verification, and an error was found on my drive
and repaired. I therefore thought I'd share the steps I took to accomplish
this in view of the fact that questions have been asked on the list with
regard to the installation and people have been reporting weird behaviour of
 Mountain Lion.

 1. Start your mac from the recovery partition of your Lion OS. This is
accomplished by pressing and holding for a few seconds command+r key
combination immediately after the startup chime is heard. It took a few
minutes for my macbook air to boot up so do not worry. Remember, Voiceover
will not start automatically when booting from recovery partition or any
 other media.

 2. Start Voiceover with command+f5 (add fn key if the former doesn't work).
Now this is a bit tricky because if you are on your own without any sight,
you don't quite know when the booting process has finished. I kept trying to
start Voiceover a few times unsuccessfully because the booting process was
still going on. Actually, my macbook air while booting was quite hot so the
fan was going, and when the booting was accomplished, the fan stopped too
and I was able to activate Voiceover immediately.

 3. You will now find yourself on a list applications which are arranged in a
table. Interact with the table, and you will see 4 applications here (if I
remember correctly). Restore from time machine, reinstall OS, erase or
repair disk, and disk utility. Press the button which says disk utility.

 4. The disk utility will look exactly like the disk utility application
window you are familiar with. Arrow right past the toolbar and interact with
the table of available disks. Place Voiceover on your mackintosh hd and
stop interacting with the table. Move right to the list of available tabs.
Choose first aid' which is usually already highlighted. Move further to the
right and choose repair disk permissions (which you might just as well do
to start with to be sure). Permissions will be repaired (you can watch
results in the table of results which Voiceover announces clearly as you
move around the window. After permissions repair, choose verify disk, and
again you can see the results in the table. At the very bottom of the table
once the process is complete, you will be told whether any problems have
been found and if the repair was successful.

 5. Quit disk utility and restart your computer as normal.

 Hope this will help.

 Andrew

IPod Touch for sale for unbeatable price

2012-08-12 Thread Christopher-Mark gilland

HI
I realize it's a bit old, but I have an IPod Touch 3GS 32 gig model which I
am absolutely just aching! to either sell or trade.

I will trade for any Android tablet *I, said, tablet, not? phone!* which is
running at least Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwitch.

Also am willing to trade for an IPad 1st or second generation, preferably
2nd, although will take what I can get. i'm not pushy.

If you rather would just buy it, I am asking $250.00. That is a savings
seeing that it was $360 when I bought it in Christmas of 2009. Nothing is
wrong with it, in fact, it's hardly even been used. I got the thing
thinking I'd use it back in the days, and don't get me wrong, I did to a
small degree, but at the time, I couldn't seem to get the hang of it. Now,
I'm a happy IPhone 4S user, and wouldn't turn back to Windows Mobile with
Code Craptory Mobile Speak if you shot me dead! I have the original Apple
Ear buds, the original Apple USB data cable, and even a electrical wall
charger which I am willing to throw in free of charge. For an additional
$10, I'll even be willing to jailbreak the thing for you ahead of time if
you'd like me to.

Currently, it is not jailbroken, and won't be upon receipt, unless you
specifically request it and pay the extra $10, and that's just a maintanence
fee for the time it will take me to get all the tools etc. together to do
it. Again, this device is in excellent condition, not a single thing what
so ever is wrong with it. I just never really used it.

Would like to get rid of it as quickly as possible.

If interested, you can write me off list at:

chris28...@me.com

Thanks tremendously.

Chris.

This is a plain crazy price in my opinion.
You can get the latest model for $272, also 32GB.
http://www.amazon.com/Apple-iPod-touch-32GB-Generation/dp/B001FA1O18

Price starts at $117 for a used 3rd generation, and that is through Amazon.

Sorry pal, but you might have to revise your offer.

Help with Selecting Text in Safari

2012-08-12 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Trying to copy some text in safari and have run in to some issues, not
sure what I am doing wrong, and it is probably a setting, so wanted to
see if anyone knew. It is weird as at first this was working, but it
doesn't seem like the cursor is following VO and I have checked my
settings in F8 and have toggled them all on and off, but nothing
changed. When I go down in to the middle of a paragraph and wanted to
select a certain line, the cursor doesn't seem to follow voiceover and
seems to be selecting a few lines earlier. Here is what I am doing. I
first interact with the text, then read it word by word with VO right
arrow. I get to the insertion point where I want to start selecting
text, and click Command shift right arrow, but it starts selecting
text somewhere else on the page, not sure what I am doing wrong here,
or if I have a setting set incorrectly. I have tried this selecting
text with Quick Nav on and off, and even tried using the trackpad to
select text, but again it was selecting the wrong area. Any help would
be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Re: Help with Selecting Text in Safari

2012-08-12 Thread Brian Fischler
Well, forget about my last post and this selecting and copying working
so well. Yet another bug in ML, and yes, I will report it to Apple.
Selecting the text on a web page works fine the first time, but if you
want to select another part of the text from the same,Voiceover will
not regain its focus or insertion point, as it still wants to start
selecting text from the first place you selected the text. The only
work around I found for this was to toggle VO off and on, which of
course than takes you back to the start of the document, than you get
to find the area you want to select and copy again, and VO will allow
you to select the new area. Here is another example of how a blind
person has no shot at being as productive of our sighted peers. Quiet
frustrating as this took me forever to accomplish

Re: iCloud account question

2012-08-12 Thread Christina C.
Hmmm, we did not use separate apple ID's. We just had our e-mail addresses's
verified through our main iTunes account because those e-mails are used for
iMessage and FaceTime. I don't know if we can log in with those since we did
not actually create a new apple ID with a password and such. I'm really
confused about this iCloud thing. I want to use iCloud for a few apps that
will sync across a couple of my computers. My kids are using mavis beacon to

Re: Help with Selecting Text in Safari

2012-08-12 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Actually, my comment had nothing to do with a criticism of Apple. it was your
social comment, Here is another example of how a blind

person has no shot at being as productive of our sighted peers. That
comment doesn't really sound like it has anything to do with Apple
specifically does it? And I certainly don't think my comment was a personal
attack. Personal? yes. Of course it was personal, I'm talking to you
specifically after all. haha. That was definitely no attack though. When
you post your opinions, and people disagree, it doesn't always mean they are
attacking you. Maybe your views, but not you. I don't know, when you make a
comment like that, is it suppose to warm our hearts. lol. And, I don't know
what adding that comment does to fix your problem either. I say is
pessimism, you say its realism. I guess we will just agree to disagree.
But, I disagree because, if you look at access to technology blind people had
just 10 years ago compared to now, I think we have become way more
productive. As much as our sighted piers? Probably not. But I believe the
gap has close a bit. Now, If someone respond to this post saying,
optimistic much? They would be within there rights to do so. And I
wouldn't feel offended by it either.

Re: Help with Selecting Text in Safari

2012-08-12 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi Kawal,

I think assuming someone disagrees with a persons views because they think they
are better are smarter is pretty far out there. I'm sure if you were on a jaws
list, windows list, etc, you would find similar opposition to comments
criticizing the subject matter the list was meant to cover. Even fair,
accurate criticism. for example, the main subject of this thread, the
selection of text in Safari. The original poster made a valid point, and
shined light on a bug. That is not what I questioned. And I honestly can't
recall attacking anyone on this list. If there is something I don't like, or
a bug I've found, I'll post about that just as quickly probably more so than, a
feature I like and that works perfectly. But if I disagree with a personal
opinion someone posts by their own free will, I don't see why I should just
keep my thoughts to myself and hit my delete key.

For me at least, its not a question of thinking I'm smarter. Its me
disagreeing and making my opinion known, just like the poster I replied to made
their feelings known. I think if someone doesn't want there opinion
challenged, they shouldn't post opinions. Just stick to facts and they
wouldn't have such issues on forums like this.

Thanks.

Re: Help with Selecting Text in Safari

2012-08-12 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey guys, healthy disagreement here. And yes, Ricardo I do agree with
you that technology has come a very very long way in ten years, and I
think Apple is one of the companies at the fore front of this. I was
just adding that every time I have posted something on this list that
goes against the norm, someone comes at me saying I must be a Windows
user, or pessimistic, or something else. I post here oftenly since I
have discovered the list, and am grateful to all those who have been
very helpful. I additionally try and help people out as much as I can
when I have an answer to their question. The point I was making for
example, if someone writes how much they absolutely love the great new
way to select text in safari, I wouldn't start calling them crazy or
that they are oblivious or must work for Apple, so why when I post
opinion that criticizes something I get blasted. You did not blast me,
I am talking about the other instances of this

suggest a hosting plan that does work well with the voice over program.?

 Thank you,

Macbook

2012-08-12 Thread Chris

Hello all.
Here is some good news for you.
I have a friend coming over on the weekend of 31 August to 2 September.
During this weekend I will have the opportunity to play with his 13 inch
Macbook, which will be running Os 10.7 Lion.
Keep you posted on how I go, but let me just say that if I get on well
enough, I will be switching very likely from the Windows platform.

Again keep you posted.
Chris.

I go to the Mail program and go over to the horizontal bar and interact. I

Three running applications?

2012-08-12 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi everyone!
When I'm sitting on my desktop, in the finder and I type VO-F1, it used
to say two applications running. Then I'd go into the application
chooser and the finder would be there. Well, now suddenly I have it
saying three applications running. I'm wondering what in the world that
third application could be or how I could find out. As far as I know, I
haven't changed anything.
I did go into my user account and look at the log in tab to see what was
checked. The only thing checked in there is iTunes helper. I think this
has always been the case. I'm really puzzled. Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Re: Nisus Writer

2012-08-12 Thread Esther
Hi Rod,

According to the developer's site description, the Express version
does not have support for features such as Table of Contents,
Indexing, Cross References, Bookmarks, Track Changes, Comments,
Watermarks, Export to ePub, and Export to .docx (though it can
import .docx format Office documents). You can download a 15-day trial
version of Nisus Writer Express, too, and make your own comparisons.
As for buying options, it can be more convenient to purchase from the
Mac App Store, if you have more than one machine, since you can
download and install to your account on any other Mac, and you can
easily check for updates. On the other hand, the web site offers
options such as the ability to buy an upgrade to Nisus Writer Pro at a
later time, without having to buy and pay for an entire new app. It
also offers an academic discounted price of $39 for the Pro version
(without upgrade eligibility) for students and teachers at educational
facilities (generally requiring you to supply a valid academic email
address and possibly supplying them with a scan of your ID card if you
don't have a valid email ending in .edu, .uni, .ac, etc.

You'll have to weigh the options, and check whether any of the above
might factor into your decision.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Easiest Way to Read Bookshare Books in Mountain Lion

2012-08-12 Thread Christine Grassman
I don't know whether this is only true of the newest additions to bookshare
(over the last year or so) but lately when I download bookshare books, no
unzipping is required. I just seek out the title and the .xml extension, and it
opens in Safari when I hit enter. Is no one else experiencing this?
Harry, I know in your case, you are dealing with previously downloaded books
which you desire to open. A workaround, if you simply cannot get the unarchiver
to work, is to redownload the book you wish to read from your book history.
Hopefully, what I discussed above will then apply, and you will have your xml
file all ready to go. Obviously, depending on the number of books you have,
this may not be desirable as far as redownloading all of your book history, but
you could do it one by one, as needed.

Re: Question about pages latest update on Mac and Time machine backups

2012-08-12 Thread Steve Holmes
Can't answer your question about Pages but as for TimeMachine nothing should
change. It should just perk along like no change. After all, the file formats
didn't change and your data files like documents and music should continue to
be available like always. I would think however, that system files like
library components and other app related stuff might not be relevant anymore.
Humm, I wonder if there is a way to sort of clean out old dead wood from prior
backups. Since backups are incremental in nature, that might be a real
challenge though.

Lastly, I have been backing up using Time Machine under Lion. When I go

I erase the external drive after installing Mountain Lion or will time

Or you might use terminal to batch rename all the files to .zip. After
all, they are really just zip files with the extension changed, so
maybe something like:
cd ~/books
rename *.bks *.zip

Harry, I know in your case, you are dealing with previously downloaded books
which you desire to open. A workaround, if you simply cannot get the
unarchiver to work, is to redownload the book you wish to read from your
book history. Hopefully, what I discussed above will then apply, and you
will have your xml file all ready to go. Obviously, depending on the number
of books you have, this may not be desirable as far as redownloading all of
your book history, but you could do it one by one, as needed.

Re: update for speakable items less enthused but working on it

2012-08-12 Thread Eric Caron

Hi Iona and others,

I'm so glad you posted this update about speakable items randomly
turning off. I had a play with it today and other then it randomly stopping
for no apparent reason I was pretty happy with what it was doing for me.
I thought I was doing something wrong but I also have to turn it off
and on again to get it to work.

If others find ways to keep it on and listening for the key word I'd
love to know. holding down a key seems to defeat the purpose for me. If I'm
going to have my hand on the keyboard I might as well just navigate that way.

Please keep sharing your Speakable items experiences and discoveries.

Hi Brian,

Keep on posting please. Like you, I'm a big believer in Apple and what they've
done, but Apple currently cannot handle all of our needs. Examples would be
reading of tables and reading of pdf documents. I use my Mac virtually all of
the time but still use Windows on occasion for the formentioned tasks, and I'm

select text, but again it was selecting the wrong area. Any help would

Re: Saving Files in TextEdit

2012-08-12 Thread Veronica Elsea
This is one of two things that drive me crazy using Text Edit in
Mountain Lion. Frankly, I'm going to look at a different text editor. I
don't have any intention of saving my documents in icloud and since I
can't change that default, it's now a royal pain in the you know what.
I also don't like this new wizard or whatever it's called that appears
when you open text edit. I tended to use this program for things like
grocery lists and such and I just hate all the extra fussing around.

 Hi Harry,

I'll paste in here my instructions I posted in a different thread with the
steps you can use to get rid of the Preview Pane in Mountain Lion Mail.

 1. Removing the Preview Pane in Classic layout:

 • Navigate to the Horizontal Splitter that is to the right of the Messages
 table.
 • Press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if needed). This will bring the mouse to the VO
cursor and announce where the mouse is and it should read Horizontal
 Splitter.
 • Double-click on your Trackpad or alternatively, you can press near the
top of the Trackpad and drag to the bottom. Make sure in this case that
you actually make the Trackpad button depress so that the drag action will
 work.

 2. Removing the Preview Pane for non-Classic layout:

 • Navigate to the Vertical Splitter just to the right of the Messages
 Column Group.
 • Press VO-cmd-f5 (add FN if necessary) to bring the mouse to the VO
cursor. It will announce Vertical Splitter if it did what it was supposed
 to do.
 • Double-click on the Trackpad or alternatively, put your finger near the
left hand side of the Trackpad, then drag to the far right and release. As
in the first case, make sure that you depress the Trackpad button so that
 the dragging process will occur.

Note that in the Classic layout, you are dealing with a Horizontal Splitter
and in the non-Classic layout, you are dealing with a Vertical Splitter.
Each case requires a different dragging direction if you choose that option.

There are a couple of ways of determining if it worked. Firstly, you can
navigate around the Mail screen and if you don't hear anything about
Message Content Area, life is good.

The second method is a little more complicated but tells you for sure. In
Classic layout, navigate to the Horizontal Splitter to the right of the
New Mailbox Action menu. You'll notice two Horizontal splitters, one
after the Messages Table and this one that I'm talking about. Once you've
located this Horizontal Splitter, Interact with it and press VO-down. Vo
will announce Collapsed which is what you want to hear. In non-Classic
layout, navigate to the Vertical Splitter just to the right of the Messages
Column Group and Interact with it. Press VO-right and VO will announce
Collapsed if the Preview pane is gone.

 HTH.
