 Hi all.
So i'm thinking of selling my macbook pro.
The only reason i want to sell it is because i want a lighter laptop for
 at college.
I will be commuting for several hours a day and will need a lighter
 computer.
My question is, since i purchased the upgrade for the laptop, will i have
to transfer the mountain lion upgrade?
If somebody were to ever restore it.
Also, if anybody is interested please feel free to contact me.

 Thanks.

For Cheryl. if you have any problems with the converted books, simply
just write .txt after the convert command. A few other output formats
is htm, rtf, and pdf. And prolly others.
As i told Annie yesterday i do one at the time. It works adoringly,
and runs as i would expect. My only problems so far is my medical

Hi Karen:

If he is using Safari to download the files from GMail, all he has to do is go
into the general preferences in Safari and uncheck the box that says, "open
safe files after downloading". This will stop safari's automatic unzipping.

Its a backpack with wheels. Many prefer this over placing a heavy bag on their

Re: Calibres ebook-converter

2012-09-28 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

What I really like about it is that you can make a file with the commands and
copy them into terminal and you are running. Even you can add the command
string to textexpander, and it will be easy to get it whenever you need the
command. I have read on the internet that it should be possible to convert a
folder containing more files, but they do not write the command out there.

It ought to be possible to make a script or a service, but I do not know how to
do that.

Best regards Annie.

Re: Onscreen Keyboard with iPad 3 and iOS 6

2012-09-28 Thread Garth Humphreys
Hi

When I updated my 3rd Gen iPad to iOS 6, I had this issue. I changed my typing
feedback from words only to words and characters under the VO settings and the
problem was than resolved. However, I am not saying that this resolved the
problem, it may have been purely coincidental. I have since kept the typing
feedback on words and characters for software keyboards and not had the problem
again. I have tested swapping the typing feedback back to words only and the
problem did not reappear. The change may have helped or as I said it may have
been just a coincidence. In any case it is certainly worth a try.

Re: Calibres ebook-converter

2012-09-28 Thread Cheryl Homiak
The only problem I see is that while in the menus there is an option to add
plugins there doesn't seem to be a way for us to do this, so calibre can't
convert some of my files. Being an avid linux user, I have absolutely no
problem about using terminal though it would be nicer with braille.

inaccessible to me. Am I missing something here or can somebody tell me
what to do? I do have the posts giving the terminal commands to use to
convert a book. Also where can I find a list of what file types it will
 convert.

 Thanks.

Hi guys
I looked up this application, since I have it on my computer, even though it's
partially inaccessible on my Mac. However, for a big $4.99, I think I will take
a chance and see how it works. Then I'll write them another letter, and they
can say, all know, one of those voiceover user did it again, and downloaded our

Re: PDFPen for iPhone Now Available

2012-09-28 Thread Cheree Heppe
Cheree Heppe here:

Since the upgrade to IOS 6, the App store is confusing and difficult to
navigate with an IOS device, which I use all the time.

The ratings for apps are buried so that they are not easily discerned. The
listings of apps is different now and gives an app or two with a button to see
more. The main thing one sees is the dollar amount for the apps and no easy
way to see descriptions of said apps.

Whoever re-designed this layout had no input from an accessibility standpoint.

I would like to try this PDF Pen, but am finding that the app store layouts are
now pdd, meaning pretty dashed difficult to use.

RE: PDFPen for iPhone Now Available

2012-09-28 Thread Daniel Miller
Hi,

It's not difficult to use at all. Each app is it's own separate page, with a
picker item to go to the next app. You simply tap on the app name that's
labeled as heading level 1 to get more info. This is on an iPhone, mind you.

Last Pass on Safari

2012-09-28 Thread Steve Holmes
Hey, I downloaded the last pass plug-in for Safari and installed it by pressing
Command-O but I can't figure out how to access anything in it. I looked
through all the Safari menus and the only thing I found was lastpass menu bar
in the View menu; I checked it but still nothing changed.

What may I be missing here? if things are that difficult, I may give up on last
pass and try One Password instead.

Its a backpack with wheels. Many prefer this over placing a heavy bag on

Re: selling my mac

2012-09-28 Thread Damashe Thomas
Thanks for that clarification Ester. I was just about post asking that
question, as I was fairly certain the 2012 macbook pros, minus the retna,
were upgradable.

You are always a great provider of information, so thanks again.

Hi Chris, Alex, Pam, and Others,

Just a small correction: the 2012 models of the MacBook Pro in 13"
size are upgradable in the same way that the 20122 MacBook Pros are.
It is only the 15" MacBook Pros with Retina graphics that can't be
upgraded among the 2012 MacBook Pro line. Like the MacBook Air,the
memory on these units is soldered onto the logic board, so you need to
decide how much memory you want when you purchase your system. The
15" Retina models also use proprietary SSD drives, and are hard to
open up. While the Unibody MacBook Pros use small screws, and are not
as easy to open and upgrade as the earlier models, there are standard
kits for this available from Other World Computing and other sources,
and you can upgrade both memory and hard drives.

Anne's correct that the MacBook Air models are very nice to use, and I
don't miss the lack of an optical drive in the MBA, but I can use the
optical drive of another Mac if I need this. I will point out that
you can use the SD slot on the MacBook Air (or on the MacBook Pro, for
that matter), to add some additional storage capacity. There's a
Kickstarter project called "The Nifty Mini-Drive" that has designed a
MicroSD card adapter for the SD card slot in these devices. The idea
is that it would sit flush with the side of your laptop, and you could
insert micro SD cards that you purchase into the adapter to use as
additional storage. This is more significant if you have a MacBook Air
with an SSD drive that is only 128 GB or 256 GB than if you have a
MacBook Pro, because being able to add a 64 GB (or larger, in future)
micro SD card has more of an impact for storage, even if it's not
giving you the SSD drive access speeds.

Here's the Kickstarter link:
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1342319572/the-nifty-minidrive

The estimated delivery date is November.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I am with you Gigi, I will take the plunge and see what happens. Then as you

I looked up this application, since I have it on my computer, even though
it's partially inaccessible on my Mac. However, for a big $4.99, I think I
will take a chance and see how it works. Then I'll write them another
letter, and they can say, all know, one of those voiceover user did it
again, and downloaded our app. What can I say. You know guys, if we don't
keep doing this, nobody is ever going to write an app that will read and

I agree with you fully.I aggree with you fully. I don't know if it is
this difficult with all mailing lists with ML Mail or if just this
one. One thing I have done to reply to the current message is to do a
reply to all (Command-Shift-R I believe) and then edit the To: and Cc:
fields so that only the address of the original sender is present. I
know, this is a lot of work. I still feel that mutt is the best all
around email client if you don't mind working in the command-line
environments like Linux and the Mac's Terminal. But anything is better
than being stuck on a web interface like I'm having to use right now

Article on Apple Maps

2012-09-28 Thread Chris
Note the following below I do not have a link for so sending the
complete article.

Apple CEO 'extremely sorry' for Maps flap

Tim Cook says the company fell short on its commitment to its customers,
and suggests using alternatives.

by Roger Cheng
September 28, 2012 6:07 AM PDT

Apple CEO Tim Cook to the most drastic step yet to address the growing
furor over its map application, saying he was "extremely sorry" for the
frustration and vowing to improve the program.

"With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this
commitment," Cook said in a statement, which was first reported on by
TechCrunch.

An apology from Apple is a rare thing, but the company has stumbled from
time to time, including its recent Antennagate issue with the iPhone 4,
and has been forced to address the problem. The maps flap has allowed
competitors such as Motorola Mobility take a swipe at the smartphone
giant, and left it vulnerable to criticism.

Cook also takes the unusual step of recommending alternatives such as
the Bing, MapQuest, or Waze apps, or using Google or Nokia's map Web
sites while the company works to improve its app.

The issue began when Apple opted to boot Google Maps from iOS6,
essentially forcing customers to use its own native app, which many
complain lacks details, is filled with distorted images, and provides
the wrong directions.

Here's the full letter:

To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best
experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps
last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for
the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing
everything we can to make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time
progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps
including features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration,
Flyover and vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a
new version of Maps from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple
Maps, with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS
users with the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion
locations. The more our customers use our Maps the better it will get
and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map
apps from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or
Nokia maps by going to their websites and creating an icon on your home
screen to their web app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in
the world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep
working non-stop until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Re: PDFPen for iPhone Now Available

2012-09-28 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
Well, after downloading it, I have just one problem so far. Every time I want
to call up a document, where says the name of the document and the word button
after it, the iPhone wants me to rename the file. It won't let me in the thing.
I don't really have much time to work on it at this time, especially since I
just bought a brand-new braille display for the Mac and my iPhone. I bought the
braille age 40. I even got it for less money than I thought it was.
I work on Mesimore, because my business is going to be a little slow in October
and part of November. I also am going to get my sided husband to download
PDFpen for the iPhone and see what he thinks. He's a computer geek, so maybe he
can figure out some stuff for us as well.
GG, who is working on all this good stuff for a while.

hint: Apple Earpods work on macs, too

2012-09-28 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Here's another newbie hint. The new Apple Earpods, and presumably the older
headphones with remote and microphone as well, work with the mac, not just iOS.
In fact, though I did type the first part of this message I am now dictating
using the microphone built into the earpods.

Have a great day,

The earpods and also the earlier earphones work I believe with the newer mac
minis; I think i remember reading that. I don't think the microphone or remote
control works with the macbook pros though the earphones themselves do of
course work. The microphone and remote control also do not work with the older
mac minis, for instance my mid-2007 model.

Windows7 bootcamp and JAWS

2012-09-28 Thread Phil Halton
Skirting towards off-topic here, but I just got off the phone with
FreedomScientific sales and was told that JAWS doesn't work with Mac. Did I get
one of their famously clueless reps, or will I have a problem running Jaws 12
64-bit on a bootcamp installation of windows 7 64-bit home premium?

If so, what screen reader works well with bootcamped versions of windows7 home
premium?

Finally, will someone who has done the bootcamp thing PLEASE tell me if I'll
need a wired mouse for the windows install? I have a wired apple keyboard, and
a wireless trackpad but no mouse, neither wired or wireless, but I'll get one
if needed.

thanks

Hello. Yes, the information you received was incorrect. The official line
may be that JAWS doesn't work on the Mac. Freedom Scientific has told me
that JAWS is not supported in VM Fusion. However, JAWS works in both Fusion

Time will tell whether the earpods are better than the old IPhone earphones.
After a few months of use, the old earphones lose volume and frequency
response. Have any of you found a remedy to this?

Hopefully Apple has remedied this with the Earbuds.

Apple CEO 'extremely sorry' for Maps flap

Tim Cook says the company fell short on its commitment to its customers, and
suggests using alternatives.
by Roger Cheng
September 28, 2012 6:07 AM PDT

Apple CEO Tim Cook to the most drastic step yet to address the growing furor
over its map application, saying he was "extremely sorry" for the frustration
and vowing to improve the program.

"With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment,"
Cook said in a statement, which was first reported on by TechCrunch.

An apology from Apple is a rare thing, but the company has stumbled from time
to time, including its recent Antennagate issue with the iPhone 4, and has been
forced to address the problem. The maps flap has allowed competitors such as
Motorola Mobility take a swipe at the smartphone giant, and left it vulnerable
to criticism.

Cook also takes the unusual step of recommending alternatives such as the Bing,
MapQuest, or Waze apps, or using Google or Nokia's map Web sites while the
company works to improve its app.

The issue began when Apple opted to boot Google Maps from iOS6, essentially
forcing customers to use its own native app, which many complain lacks details,
is filled with distorted images, and provides the wrong directions.

Here's the full letter:

   To our customers,

At Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best
experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last
week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the
frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to
make Maps better.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. As time
progressed, we wanted to provide our customers with even better Maps including
features such as turn-by-turn directions, voice integration, Flyover and
vector-based maps. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps
from the ground up.

There are already more than 100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps,
with more and more joining us every day. In just over a week, iOS users with
the new Maps have already searched for nearly half a billion locations. The
more our customers use our Maps the better it will get and we greatly
appreciate all of the feedback we have received from you.

While we're improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map apps
from the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps by
going to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their web
app.

Everything we do at Apple is aimed at making our products the best in the
world. We know that you expect that from us, and we will keep working non-stop
until Maps lives up to the same incredibly high standard.

Re: hint: Apple Earpods work on macs, too

2012-09-28 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I don't even need time. lol. They are definitely better. They have a little
nozzle that directs sound directly into your ear canal. This way, less sound
is bled out the back like the old model. It just sounds better. But, they are
what they are. run of the mill headphones. I don't find them terribly
comfortable for long use. Not as bad as the old headphones though. You get a
little more bass response and more mids with the earPods. I still won't use
them though. They will do in a pinch but, I'll keep on with my Shure 215 IEMs.

A number of years ago, a Freedom Scientific rep told a friend of mine that
there was no such thing as Windows 2000.
So, how would they know if Jaws would run on a mac.

I think the thing to keep in mind is that FS says they will not support Jaws

there is something like "New Message" in the context menue which opens a new
message to the sender. But of course it's not the same as reply to sender but
it might be a better option then to copy the address to the clipboard.

Hmmm, I haven't had this problem with my Apple earphones but I imagine it can
vary from set to set and could be related to how much you use them.

Re: Windows7 bootcamp and JAWS

2012-09-28 Thread Cameron Strife
FS, clueless and stubborn as usual. There is no valid reason why they
don't offer tech support to those running windows natively on a mac
via bootcamp. It's the same damn thing as running it on any piece of
crap pc, except for the fact that I've had better performance on my
macs than on any pcs I've owned.

Re: hint: Apple Earpods work on macs, too

2012-09-28 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi Cheryl
My old apple ear buds work find with my mac book pro 2011. Even the microphone.
The volume works for both vo and audio. Try playing around in system
preferences/sounds. When I plug the Apple ear buds in the devices table shows
that automatically and it seems to be the only one available then. You have to
push them in quite hard or they won't work. Good luck. Maybe someone else can
help more.

Re: Windows7 bootcamp and JAWS

2012-09-28 Thread Esther
Hi Phil,

I've never done anything with Boot Camp, but a search of Apple's own
documentation pulls up the following (with source locations so you can
check this yourself):
Source: Boot Camp Installation & Setup Guide
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/boot_camp_install-setup.pdf

Under "What you need" section
A USB keyboard and mouse, or a built-in keyboard and trackpad

Also, the Apple Knowledge base has an entry,
"Boot Camp 4.0, OS X Lion and Mountain Lion: Frequently asked
questions"
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4818

One of the questions is about why using a wireless mouse doesn't work
with the installation, and the answer is that there are not wireless
mouse drivers in this version of Boot Camp, so you have to use a USB
mouse. I suspect the "built-in" keyboard and trackpad alternatives
refer to laptops. My reading of this is that you need to use a USB
mouse to do your setup. On the other hand, I've never done this
installation myself.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Am I crazy or is there no longer a way to reply only to the sender of a message in mail?

2012-09-28 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Wait, just a second here. I was under the impression that all one had to do to
reply directly to the sender was to interact with the message headers group,
then, focus on the sender, VO=left arrow once, then, open the short cut menu
and choose e-mail from that menu. Always has worked for me. Note, the option
to "reply to sender" has apparently been renamed, "e-mail" but, still the same
thing.

I think it would work to select that tone in iTunes, get info, then lower the
volume level there.

Re: Windows7 bootcamp and JAWS

2012-09-28 Thread Phil Halton

Thank you esther,

I've read the guide and read through the various apple documentation. My
question is whether the mouse is "absolutely" necessary to the install -
e.g. you can't complete the install of windows7 without using a mouse at
some point where the keyboard won't suffice.

Or, if there is the assumption that everyone uses a mouse, and that you'll
have to use a wired mouse if indeed the assumption is true (which we all
know, as blind people, that a mouse is at best minimally useful, and that
most everything can be done with a keyboard that could be done with a mouse)

PHEW!

I hope I finally made this clear. I never use a mouse if I can avoid it, and
I'm just wondering if those of us who have installed bootcamp windows found
it absolutely necessary to the install process to move and press a mouse
button at some point. Otr, if they managed just fine with the keyboard
alone.

I think I know the answer (the mouse is not necessary), but I want to be
sure.

Great, but do you need a mouse to install windows7 in bootcamp? That's all
I want to know, is a mouse necessary? Can the installation be done by
keyboard alone?

I really love calibre now! I found what I needed to make it work in some books
I had trouble with and it is going to revolutionize my ebook reading! I also
really like that it seems to work well with voiceover in terminal; enough gets
spoken as it converts for you to usually know whether or not it was successful

when applied at check out up through the end of September. These books are
DRM-free, and are available in both PDF and ePub versions. Furthermore, once
you purchase a book, which generally lists for $10 or $15, you can get all
minor version revisions free and re-download alternate formats from your
account, and often you can get a discount on the new major version of the eBook.

I'm cc'ing this to the viphone list, because some titles, such as "Take Control
of iTunes" or even "Take Control of Switching to the Mac", may be of interest.
For Mac users, titles such as "Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion",
"Take Control of Using Mountain Lion", "Take Control of Troubleshooting Your
Mac, Second Edition", "Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal" (for
learning to use Terminal and unix concepts), "Take Control of Backing Up Your
Mac", and "Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network, Third Edition" (for
general Wi-Fi setups and use) might be of interest. These guides are very
hands on and practical; some of them have information that I've never found
anywhere else.

If you log in through their special anniversary sale link, the coupon code
should get filled in automatically. This URL is:
http://tid.bl.it/september-sale-mountain-lion

Alternatively, if this web page is busy, you can go to their catalog page:
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/catalog

You can browse the "Take Control" titles in iBooks, if you have an iOS device,
but the discounted price and the ability to download alternative formats and be
informed of new, free, updates is only available for purchases made through
their web site. (I find it easier to browse the titles in iBooks).

I'll put in a few sample direct links to specific books on their web site:
• Take Control of iTunes 10: The FAQ, Second Edition
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/itunes
• Take Control of Apple Mail in Mountain Lion
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mountain-lion-apple-mail
• Take Control of Using Mountain Lion
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/mountain-lion-using
• Take Control of Switching to the Mac
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/switching
• Take Control of Backing up Your Mac
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/backing-up
• Take Control of the Mac Command Line with Terminal
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/command-line
• Take Control of Your 802.11n AirPort Network, Third Edition
http://www.takecontrolbooks.com/airport-n

There are also good guides for GarageBand, third party apps such as Scrivener.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

looking for a blind friendly point of sales program for the Mac

2012-09-28 Thread Scott Berry

Hey there,

Does anyone know of any blind friendly Point of Sales systems for the
Mac which includes a bar code scanner and a cash drawer? We would also
like to have one screen that the customer can see on the other side of
the counter as well. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions

2012-09-28 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
Is there described content available on iTunes? If so, how does one find it and
how wide-spread is it?

Second, a more general purchasing question. When one buys a movie or tv show on
iTunes, does one then own it for life, or is it a rental-like arrangement? I
know I own the songs I buy, but I am not sure about longer content with
different licensing like tv shows or movies. Thanks.

Have a great day,

tivo and mountain lion

2012-09-28 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion, but my Itivo software won't work to
transfer shows frm my Tivo box to my Mac. I know people use Roxio Toast, but
the last I heard it isn't accessible with Voiceover. Any suggestions? This
issue is holding me back from upgrading.

Re: described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions

2012-09-28 Thread Chris Bruinenberg
Hi Alex.
I know if you purchase a tv show or movie, you will own it.
I am currently downloading a tv season that I purchased a while ago.
The first question, i believe there are a few movies that have described
content. I remember for instance, the movie toy story 3 had described audio.
HOpe that helps a little.

Thanks.

Re: described content on iTunes, plus purchasing questions

2012-09-28 Thread Alex Hall
Okay, I'm glad to know you own them. I thought I'd heard somewhere that you
only rented them, but maybe that was a while ago or it's a cheaper option if
you don't want to buy it forever. As to descriptions, it sounds like it's a
rare thing from what you are saying, which is really a shame. I'd still like a
way to find all described content, or at least do a search with the stipulation
that all results must be described. I'm tempted to write to apple accessibility
about this, but I'm not sure this is in their area. Hmm...

protected pdf

2012-09-28 Thread Lisette Wesseling
Hi all
I recently bought a book from Kobo which I thought was in epub but is actually
a drm protected pdf. I don't know how I can read this either on my iPhone or
mac. I've written to Kobo but they have not replied.
What are people using to read protected PDF files? Bookle won't read them is
that right?
I'd like to read my book now that I've purchased it. Thanks for any help.

Cheers

Trouble Interacting with the HTML Area in Messages

2012-09-28 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Thanks Chris and Gavin.

Gavin, the only problem I foresee with that soolution is that the messages I
want to read are nearly always the last few at the bottom of the HTML area.
Doing VO-A I assume will read from the beginning, which will read out all my
really old messages and take a really long time to get to the new ones.

Anyway, thanks for your thoughts. I'll try reporting it to
accessibil...@aple.com and hopefully Apple will fix the problem in an update.

Best,
Nic

Sharing Reminder Lists in Mountain Lion 10.8.2.

2012-09-28 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi all,

Since Mac OS X 10.8.2, it is possible to share reminder lists with other iCloud
users. The process is described as follows:
1) Place the pointer over a reminder list's name
2) Click the broadcast icon that appears
3) To share the list with someone, enter the person's email address (or contact
name),
4) Click Done.

Obviously, this process of clicking the broadcast icon that appears when you
place the pointer over the reminder list's name presents problems for VoiceOver
users.

I've tried accessing a contextual menu, searching the menu bar options, using
VO-Command-F5 to route the mouse pointer to the VO curser and then moving
around with either the mouse or the VO curser but none of these has yeilded any
results.

Has anyone else had any success sharing reminder lists?

Cheers,
Nic
