Re: Finally!: An Audio Action/Adventure Game on the Mac!; BlindSide

2012-10-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
Sorry about that; I was navigating the page once I was logged in.

Go to this page:
http://www.desura.com/games/blindside

Do a text search for $3.99 and click on the link with these words. You'll be
presented with a cart.

I'd suggest doing a text search, because there is a lot of material on this
page.

I assure you that I have this game and I've played it through once already. The
link provided on blindsidegame.com is just not a direct download link, which
makes it confusing.

Hope this helps, and let me know if I can help further.

Teresa

Re: Reading Epub Books on the Mac

2012-10-02 Thread Steve Holmes
I will give bookle a try. So far, most of my ePub books are all DRM-free from
other sources outside Apple. Yes, iBooks for the mac would be the best because
you could then sync books and bookmarks over iCloud like you can between iOS
devices.

This will do for the time being.

Re: Take Control eBooks' September Sale

2012-10-02 Thread Steve Holmes
I really wish they would fix the tables all over their site. Even my personal
library of books thus purchased is a mess too. VO will not go down past the
first detail row in the table. It jumps from row 3 back up to row 1 even if
you have a dozen rows in the table. I have never seen this anomaly anywhere
else on the web. VO's table navigation is generally quite good in HTML content.

Re: moving and renaming?

2012-10-02 Thread Steve Holmes
To move a file, first select the file in Finder and copy to clipboard with
Command-C; then go to the folder where you want to put it; then press
Command-Option-V to paste and delete original in same keystroke.

To rename the file, just hit the return key and type in the new name or edit
what is currently there.

Problem with Facebook app and push notifications, please help!

2012-10-02 Thread Chris

Hello all.
I use the official Facebook app, along with the new integration
features, on my iPhone 4 running iOS 6.
Up until a few days ago, I could receive push notifications from my
close friends list, or Facebook in general, no problem! But now, I am
not getting them at all! I do however get them via e-mail and they show
up on my news feed on the mobile site. So I know it is not a problem
with Facebook itself, just the official app. I even tried reinstalling
it to no avail.
I asked my friend Gary Price on Skype last night, and he is not having
this issue on his iPhone 4 running iOS 6.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Please reply as soon as possible.
Thanks so much!
Christopher Hallsworth.

Re: OT iTunes Gift Card Giveaway

2012-10-02 Thread Scott Davert
I'm not a mod or anything, but I think this is clasified as spam and
action should be taken. One message was bad enough, now we get the
news lettter too. I mean, if I had subscribed to the news letter,
obviously I wouldn't have an issue, but I feel like the list shouldn't
be a soundingboard for companies to advertize. I say this not being a
moderator or anything, just as someone who follows the list and enjoys
the otherwise useful info on it.

Thanks,

Re: Reading Epub Books on the Mac

2012-10-02 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Can you read other companies' drm books on iBooks? my problem with iBooks is
that I've wanted quite a few books that weren't available from them? Also,
remember that you can read many drm and non-drm books in Adobe Digital Editions
2.0. Its current state isn't optimal since you have such limited navigation,
but you can copy and paste a page at a time using vo-shift-c to copy and it
appears you can actually save the finished product. It would be time-consuming
to do a whole book that way but it can be done. Also, there's the command line
of Calibre and the scripts that are available for calibre and, though I won't
discuss it here, there are other tools for use with calibre that are accessible
to us for converting the books to other formats. This isn't discounting the
need for a better solution on the Mac; it's just inventorying what is available
to us so that we can use these resources until there is something better.

Apolagies To The List

2012-10-02 Thread Scott Rumery
Hello,

I would like to apologize to those of you that I offended by sending out a
promotion for an iTunes gift card that my company is doing. It was not my
intention to send out spam and for the record I do not think what I did is
spam, but I have noticed that a couple of you on this list thought that I was
spamming the list.

We at Fedora Outlier are simply trying to spread the word about about the
company and I thought that I would post the announcement here so that those of
you that would like to be in the drawing could follow us and then be entered.

I will refrain from sending this list any more announcements about Fedora
Outlier in the future.

Again, please accept my sincerest apologies.

Scott

Nope.

This has been standard since IOS 5.0. Voiceover and triple press home works

Hi,

Thats because the phone was already set up with out Voiceover being enabled.
You must turn on VO with a triple press of home during the setup for those to
be the default configuration.

Re: How to start with Numbers?

2012-10-02 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi There
I do this all the time on Numbers. First, when you press command O en a file,
you should get the messaje that you are on layout. There are some other
choices, but that's the one you want first. You need to interact on that one.
Then, you should get a choice of tables. You can add tables somehow so that you
have more than one, and I have done this accidentally. If you have done nothing
yet to your file, you should have only one. Interact again on the table. Then
you can see your rows and columns just like in Excel. VoiceOver does consider,
as a default, the first row and the first column to be headers, which tells
VoiceOver to let you know where you are. It announces these rows and columns
for you as you move from place to place.

I will say that right now there seems to be a bug in the new version of Numbers
that the computer slows way down on very large files. I have one that is over
100 rows, and it's slow to use. I have reported this to Apple. I hope they fix
it soon. But for smaller files, this should not be a problem. With these big
files, the pro#more seems to be with editing the cells. Copying and pasting
doesn't seem to be a problem. However, after having said that, I can make it
work ok, even though with a braille display it is possible to need to force
quit like I had to do yesterday. If you're using a braille display, turning
grade 2 braille off might help.

Regards,
Gigi

be doing more. They say it takes an average of an hour to play, but I'm a slow
game-player, so it took me several.

Re: iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Eugenia Firth
Ricardo, apparently that has been changed. AFB sponsored an iPhone workshop at
our recent ACB of Texas conference this past weekend. We decided to test this
because there was a discussion about tripple click home and whether this
standard any more. It didn't work on any of the iPhones we had present, unless
it was set up in the VoiceOver utility. I guess too many of our sighted friends
using iPhones turned VoiceOver on and couldn't figure out how to get it off. My
husband said that at one time there was a link or something on the Apple
website that said "Turn VoiceOver off." I've noticed that some of these sighted
folks panic when they get VoiceOver going. I guess that some of them don't
listen to the hints.

Re: braille display

2012-10-02 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi guys.
There are some very good reasons to use 40 cells instead of 32 for some people.
This 40 cell one I have is much lighter than my Focus 40 that I'm about to give
back to the state of Texas.

For one thing, if you use Web Braille, the files are done with 38 cells as the
righthand margin. Although you can read in Web Braille with fewer cells than
40, you are always assured of getting a complete braille line with a 40 cell
display. A 40 cell line is standard with NLS.

Although the display is longer with a 40 cell ddvice, this particular one is
not awkward like some of them can be with a longer display. I think it depends
how heavy the device is. One of these days, when I feel like it, I may get one
of those little bitty ones for the iPhone. I can't justify the cost right now
because this little thing is pretty to use with the iPhone, what with the light
leather carrying case and all.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Ricardo.
I have done this test with several devices that sighted have had where they
have never turned VoiceOver on or off. It didn't work with theirs either. In
this case, some sighted folks had some iPhones there and they tried it on
theirs. It didn't work. So, it was recommended that people check it out first
before leaving the store to be sure it work and not just assume that it would.

Now, it could be that some of these stores are messing with the settings
because they don't want their customers turning VoiceOver on accidentally.
That's the best answer I can give.

Regards,
Gigi

Tim, the tripple click has always worked since I O S 5 by default, provided you

Pam,

Even if they did have a first generation, that wouldn't matter at all. This
has absolutely nothing to do with the hardware specification like what
generation... this depends on what version of IOS. Ever since I O S 5, you've

RE: iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Paul Hunt
Hello everyone. To get around this, you could either purchase the device
online or insist that the store sell you a device that hasn't been touched
by a store employee. People in stores want to make sure everything is set up
before a customer leaves the store. For some of us, part of the fun is the
pure joy of being able to open a box and set everything up ourselves.

John, I'm an Apple trainer. I won't charge anything just to help get her set

ovedr Skype, or the phone but there would be a small fee. Just the initial
setup though, I never ever charge people for that. If she needs any more help
getting Voiceover on or started, let me know. Even with a first gen, it can be
done with no sighted help. Trust me, I've done it many many times.

Re: iPad

Again, as Ricardo said, the tripple click won't work by default, unless it
was pressed initially during the setup screen. If you all were trying to do
this after the IPhones had been set up and configured, that's then why it
didn't work on any of the units. Trust me, I've been a dev for quite some
time, so I think I should know what I'm talking about.

Ricardo, apparently that has been changed. AFB sponsored an iPhone workshop
at our recent ACB of Texas conference this past weekend. We decided to test
this because there was a discussion about tripple click home and whether
this standard any more. It didn't work on any of the iPhones we had present,
unless it was set up in the VoiceOver utility. I guess too many of our
sighted friends using iPhones turned VoiceOver on and couldn't figure out
how to get it off. My husband said that at one time there was a link or
something on the Apple website that said "Turn VoiceOver off." I've noticed
that some of these sighted folks panic when they get VoiceOver going. I
guess that some of them don't listen to the hints.

Hello, I might to also assume that you are a brand-new iOS user if so
there is a gentleman on Apple this VIS Apple this.com who works
primarily with visually impaired and has done many podcasts dealing
with iOS software and how voiceover works. His name is David
Woodbridge. If you go through there podcasts section, you will find
your share of podcasts relating to Iowa software done by David
Woodbridge also you can find his podcasts in iTunes. I hope this helps.

How to download ebooks from christianbook.com

2012-10-02 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Okay, I hope everybody will excuse that I am going to post this to three lists
but at least I am going to send separately to each list. I thought this might
be really helpful to some who may have been as frustrated as I was.

I have bought several ebooks from Christianbook.com. I could read them online
but aside from a copy-and-paste procedure that only worked on Snow Leopard
below 10.6.8, I could not download the books to my computer. Also, when I tried
it with Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 on my computer in Windows, the fact that i
had ADE installed wasn't even recognized but if I allowed the ADE to be
installed from Christianbook.com in Windows it was inaccessible. Trying to
download from the Mac was really frustrating because you could see the message
to close the window from the flash player but couldn't access the link to
download the item.

I emailed Christianbook specifically about updating their version of ADE and
they wrote back suggesting I right-click. So I decided to try this on the Mac.
To my dismay, setting a keyboard commander command for right click did not work
even though I had the mouse lined up correctly; it just dinged at me. Doing
vo-shift-m brought up a seven item menu which didn't include downloading the
linked file.

Finally, I went into System Preferences > Trackpad and under the "point and
click" tab, I changed the secondary click menu to "click in bottom right
corner". This time when i lined up my mouse on the "download" link for a book
and pressed the bottom right corner of the trackpad, and eight-item menu opened
with both "download linked file" and another to save as. I have now tried this
with three books and two times it downloaded the actual epub file. One time it
downloaded the urllink file which downloaded the epub when opened in ADE.

I hope this will be as helpful to somebody else as it was to me. I have spent
the greater part of the last two days stewing over this and trying to get
something to work to download ebooks from this site. I no longer need to cling
to Snow Leopard 10.6.7 on my old mac mini which threatens never to start up
again every time I shut it down! I again apologize for posting this to three
lists but I know that some people only subscribe to one of these.

Re: iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Right. But as I'm trying to explain, that is expected behavior. The term "out
the box" pretty much means just that. Voiceover being enabled with a triple
press of home only works when the device is being set up either, straight from
the factory when you first get the device and open its box or, you restore your
device to factory settings and are doing the set up again. If a sighted
person sets up your device, and they do not use voiceover, voiceover can not be
enabled by default with a triple press of home. You would then need to connect
your phone to your computer and use iTunes to enable VO or, have a sighted
person do it for you. Again, this is standard behavior.

I got a brand new iPhone 5 delivered last Thursday from Sprint, and triple

like, etc., but no VO with triple click home.

Re: iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

Did you check your volume? I got an iPhone 5 as weel from sprint and, triple
press of home did turn on VO, and on that very screen with the different
languages. The volume was turned down almost all the way. I did a 2 finger
flick up, and increased the volume.

Ricardo, apparently that has been changed. AFB sponsored an iPhone

decided to test this because there was a discussion about tripple click
home and whether this standard any more. It didn't work on any of the
iPhones we had present, unless it was set up in the VoiceOver utility. I
guess too many of our sighted friends using iPhones turned VoiceOver on
and couldn't figure out how to get it off. My husband said that at one
time there was a link or something on the Apple website that said "Turn
VoiceOver off." I've noticed that some of these sighted folks panic when
they get VoiceOver going. I guess that some of them don't listen to the
 hints.

windows logo key alternative on Apple keyboard?

2012-10-02 Thread Phil Halton
I'm going to install Windows7 on my late 2011 iMac soon and am wondering about
this very important and useful key - the windows logo key. Obviously its not on
the Apple USB full-size keyboard, but is there an alternative mapping after you
install the bootcamp support drivers? How about the "applications key" on pc
keyboards.

These two keys are invaluable on windows systems. Do I have to map them with
something like SharpKeys, or is there already an alternative mapping?

thanks.

Re: windows logo key alternative on Apple keyboard?

2012-10-02 Thread Chris Bruinenberg
You'll need to install sharp keys on windows.
The windows key by default is the command key. At least on my MacBook.
Sharp keys will have to change a key such as the right command or option to the
applications key.
Hope that's helpful to you

Re: windows logo key alternative on Apple keyboard?

2012-10-02 Thread Alex Hall
The command key is the windows key, at least that's how the mac maps it on a
windows-style usb keyboard connected to my mini. As to applications, there is
not, but remember that the same functionality can be gotten to by pressing
shift-f10. I know it isn't as convenient, but it is something to keep in mind.

2012-10-02 Thread CJ Daniel
Hi,

I read them as HTML in Safari on my Mac. Remember, the key is to add them to
your bookshelf via favorites. Unless you do that, you can only see a teaser
for each chapter @ a time.

Hope this helps,

CJ

HI all (and particularly Esther, as I have a feeling you may hold the

I'd like to try and understand a little about basic programming on the
Mac. I'd like to see if I could develop some very simple little apps. I
would, of course, want them to be accessible with VoiceOver. In fact, this
 would be my top priority.

I've heard that programming in the Mac's native cocoa language is best in
 terms of VoiceOver accessibility.

 So, my questions are:

 1. Does anyone know of a good resource for learning the basics of cocoa,
particularly any that provide a VO accessibility point of view?
 and
 2. Are there any apps that can be used to develop apps in cocoa which are
 accessible with VoiceOver?

 Many thanks for any help.

You'll need to install sharp keys on windows.
The windows key by default is the command key. At least on my MacBook.
Sharp keys will have to change a key such as the right command or option to
the applications key.
  Hope that's helpful to you

These two keys are invaluable on windows systems. Do I have to map them

Again based on my mac's mapping of a windows keyboard, yes. Too bad there's no
function key mapping for windows keyboards, as I'd love to have the function
keys (f1-f12) work like they do on a dedicated mac keyboard.

Re: iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Gigi, you're still not understanding though what we're trying to explain.
This explains why it didn't work.

The tripple click of the home key won't work unless several conditions have
been met.

1. The user gets the IPhone out of the box for the first time, powers it on
for the very first time, and as soon as the first initial screen to set up
the device comes up, they then press the home key 3 times quickly in a row.

2. The user must go into settings, accessibility, tripple click home, and
set it to toggle voiceover.

Here's the thing though that you need to understand. The tripple clicking
of the home key, to toggle it on/off as you all were testing, and trying to
do, will, not, work, unless you either manually set it to do so through
settings, or unless you mash the home key the 3 times quickly after very
very first turnhing on the phone. I don't mean, turn on the phone after it
already has been before, then immediately press home 3 times. That won't
necessarily work. You literally have to do it initially the very very very
first time ever that the device is powered on or is reset to factory default
settings with all data being wiped.

I guarantee, if you was to buy an I O S device from Apple, take it out of
the box, put the sim card in, if there need to be one depending on the
network it's being used with, then hold the sleep/power button on the top
right of the device, power it on, then as soon for the first time as it ever
gets power, and comes on, as soon as you see the screen that says welcome,
and you then immediately press the home key, the round concaved key at the
front bottom center just below the screen 3 times quickly as a tripple
click, Voiceover would then start talking. It would be a bit quiet, and you
may have to turn it up, but ultimately, it should turn on.

The reason it wasn't working when you all did it, is because someone had
already gotten through those welcome screens. They'd already selected their
language, time zone, etc etc and initially set up the device. Once they've
done this, if they didn't turn Voiceover on at that time with the tripple
click, as they were setting it up, then it won't work unless you manually go
in and turn that setting on. If you do it during the initial setup screen,
it will turn Voiceover on, plus will set it so that from that point forward,
no matter what, hitting the home key 3 quick times will toggle Voiceover
on/off.

I have an old IPod, which is pretty much identical to an IPhone only without
the hardware gut of the phone, but same exact system/OS. It's still I O S.
If this doesn't make sense, I'll try making an audio recording with it after
restoring it to factory default and show you what I mean.

Chris.

Re: iPad

2012-10-02 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Let me know if you all need that audio demonstration still. I'm not about!
to reset my IPhone to demonstration this, but I'd be happy to do it with the
IPod, seeing I mainly only use that thing as a testing device for things
like this anyway.

I know, it works. I tried my brothers iPhone 4s and it does not turn
voiceover on.

Your correct with everything you said and it all makes perfect sense.

Gigi, you're still not understanding though what we're trying to explain.
This explains why it didn't work.

The tripple click of the home key won't work unless several conditions
have been met.

1. The user gets the IPhone out of the box for the first time, powers it
on for the very first time, and as soon as the first initial screen to set
up the device comes up, they then press the home key 3 times quickly in a
row.

2. The user must go into settings, accessibility, tripple click home, and
set it to toggle voiceover.

Here's the thing though that you need to understand. The tripple clicking
of the home key, to toggle it on/off as you all were testing, and trying
to do, will, not, work, unless you either manually set it to do so through
settings, or unless you mash the home key the 3 times quickly after very
very first turnhing on the phone. I don't mean, turn on the phone after
it already has been before, then immediately press home 3 times. That
won't necessarily work. You literally have to do it initially the very
very very first time ever that the device is powered on or is reset to
factory default settings with all data being wiped.

I guarantee, if you was to buy an I O S device from Apple, take it out of
the box, put the sim card in, if there need to be one depending on the
network it's being used with, then hold the sleep/power button on the top
right of the device, power it on, then as soon for the first time as it
ever gets power, and comes on, as soon as you see the screen that says
welcome, and you then immediately press the home key, the round concaved
key at the front bottom center just below the screen 3 times quickly as a
tripple click, Voiceover would then start talking. It would be a bit
quiet, and you may have to turn it up, but ultimately, it should turn on.

The reason it wasn't working when you all did it, is because someone had
already gotten through those welcome screens. They'd already selected
their language, time zone, etc etc and initially set up the device. Once
they've done this, if they didn't turn Voiceover on at that time with the
tripple click, as they were setting it up, then it won't work unless you
manually go in and turn that setting on. If you do it during the initial
setup screen, it will turn Voiceover on, plus will set it so that from
that point forward, no matter what, hitting the home key 3 quick times
will toggle Voiceover on/off.

I have an old IPod, which is pretty much identical to an IPhone only
without the hardware gut of the phone, but same exact system/OS. It's
still I O S. If this doesn't make sense, I'll try making an audio
recording with it after restoring it to factory default and show you what
I mean.

Re: Go to end of document

2012-10-02 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Yes there is.

First of all:

fn+left arrow=Page up
fn+right arrow=Page Down
fn+Up arrow=Home
fn+down arrow=End.

In Text Edit at least, can't speak for Numbers, command+left arrow=beginning
of line

command+right arrow=End of line
Command+Up arrow=top of file
command+down arrow=bottom of file.

Re: Go to end of document

2012-10-02 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Chris,

you're slightly confused. In tables, you can't do command+down arrow. What
you gotta do in a table, is to hit fn+vo+shift+right arrow.

If you do left arrow instead of right arrow you'll jump to the top of the
table.

I know that sounds cocka mainy but trust me, it works.

For those with a full sized keyboard, you can do the same thing with vo+home
and vo+end. Just be sure that before you hit either a those that you first
are interacting with the table. Otherwise you'll jump to the bottom of the
screen, or the top, respectedly.

I thought the end of a document was command-down arrow. At least it works
in Text Edit and any edit text fields, but it is broken in some tables,
such as the message table in Mail.

newbie tip: vo-u in webpages

2012-10-02 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm back for another in my unintentional Newbie Tips series, where I explain
something I just found that I wish I'd known months ago.

This time it's the web rotor, available in any "html content" item. When vo is
focused in one of these, press vo-u to bring up the web rotor. Left and right
arrows will move you through the different items available (you can set which
ones you see in the vo utility under web). Each time you left/right arrow to a
category, vo tells you how many of that item are on the page. You then use up
and down arrows to move through the list of that item. For instance, you might
do a google search, then bring up the web rotor and arrow to headings. Use up
and down arrows in the headings list to move through your search results.
Pressing space or vo-space on any item will jump you to it, but will not open
it, even if it is a link. So, if you are arrowing along and find a link in the
rotor list, press space on it and vo will jump to it. You must vo-space again
to actually open the link.

This looks like a really neat tool and one I will certainly be using more now
that I know about it. As always, if I have made any errors, please correct me
so we don't have bad information getting spread around.

Have a great day,
Alex (msg sent from Mac Mini)

system dialog but not there

2012-10-02 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Okay.

Want a weird problem? Here goes. While running Skype, and after a while of
just sitting there, I will suddenly hear a Skype alert telling me a contact has
gone on or off line; and then, I hear "system dialog". But, when I go to check
using VO+F2, nothing but that one window open. Any clues?

Sincerely,
The Constantly Barefooted Ray!!!

Now a very proud and happy Mac user!!!

Is there a series of help files for different applications?
How do you all find out about these? Thanks again.

Editing Repeating Events in Calendar

2012-10-02 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI all,

When editing a repeat event in Calendar a dialogue is displayed asking whether
you wish to change all future events or only the current event. However,
VoiceOver does not automatically focus on this dialogue. Moreover, it is
impossible to keep editing or even stop editing the event once this dialogue is
displayed.

the only way I have been able to get around this so far is by turning my
trackpad commander off, then using it to move the mouse pointer while pressing
VO F5 to hear what's under the mouse. When I hear the dialogue message under
the mouse I use VO SHIFT F5 to move the VO curser to the mouse pointer which is
on the dialogue, then I can use normal VO navigation to choose whether to
change only the current or all future events.

This method works, but it can be time consuming and a little hit and miss.
Sometimes I find the dialogue straight away, other times I can be moving the
mouse pointer around for a really long time before I hit the jackpot.

Does anyone have a better method of getting VO to this dialogue?

Many thanks in advance.

Nic

typing at fast speeds with the Alex voice ...

2012-10-02 Thread Jeff Bishop
Hello,

I have noticed that typing very quickly on my Mac using Alex that it is not
very responsive (not keeping up as I type). Now, I do have keyboard speech
set to echo characters. Switching to Samantha seems to be a bit better but I
was just curious what others impressions are as far as a good voice that is
very responsive (even if purchased)?

Re: system dialog but not there

2012-10-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi Ray,

You might try a VO click on it. It may have gone out of focus because of a
blank screen or screen-saver. Try VO-shift-space wherever you happen to be and
see if it comes back.

Teresa
