Hi Chris. Yes, torrents are illegal, but as they say in wrestling, it's only
illegal if you get caught, and the law is too concerned about other things to
deal with people downloading software or movies. I shouldn't say anymore but
you get the picture.

Hi Chris. Unfortunately, at this time, Apple has restricted third-party
developers from making voices for IOS. You can get apps that have the voices in
them, but as of right now, they're restricted to that app. I know, it's stupid.

Speaking of New Voices...

2012-11-04 Thread Chris Gilland
I got to thinking. I wonder if there are any additional voices that I can
purchase, or that are freeware which I could download and install on my
IPhone/IPad. With the way that Voiceover works on IOS, I really doubt it, but
you never know. I know there are obviously lots of 3rd party voices you can
get for the Android platform, so figured maybe there may be something similar
for IOS. Don't get me wrong, I like the default voice… what is it… Jill? Or is
it Symantha. Anyway, it would just be nice to have some other options. Yes, I
know there are all the Nuance voices, but I honestly am not too crazy about
those.

Anyway, thanks for the help.

Chris.

Re: Discovered New Voices For Mac

2012-11-04 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland

Unfortunately, I think that John is correct.

I tried installing the Adam voice, and that went fine. When I tried
switching over to the voice however, thank God my voiceover didn't totally
hang and go to no speech at all, but it did seem to revert back to Alex, and
when I looked with my vo+command+left and right arrow to kove to the voice
option, it said Null.

I just rebooted. We'll see if that helps, but at this rate, I'm not very
hopeful, and one of my friends even told me that when he tried getting a
refund once a while back, granted he bought a Windows version, not a mac
version, but still, he said they were so unwilling to refund him, that he
finally had to open a claim with Paypal, and paypal took action, and
refunded him, and flagged Cereproc for negative transaction activity.

We'll see what happens, but at this point, I'm completely unimpressed.

Chris.

sorts of restrictions occasionally using image deployment methods but the
machine has usually ran so slow that it was painful to use, especially with VO.

Re: iMac Temperature

2012-11-04 Thread Cheryl Homiak
Also to clarify: there is a larger software program called hardware monitor
that does a number of things. Temperature monitor itself can be downloaded
separately and is free. I thought I should point it out because when you go to
the website you almost immediately hear something about "full software, not an
app; definitely not available on the app store". Then it goes on to explain if
you keep looking.

Re: iMac Temperature

2012-11-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Esther,

Mostly accessible may have been the wrong phrase. I've just noticed that in
some cases the temperature is not read out, it just says "blank" or nothing at
all. You can navigate up and down sometimes or sometimes VO-c will read the
Column Header and then read the temperature out loud. So, I guess it's more a
consistency issue than an accessibility issue.

Yes, those voices are really good. Admitedly, I think the nuance voices are a

I got a new power adaptor and a new battery and this puppy is running like
a champ with Leopard. I'm wondering if it is upgradable to Snowy. I'll have
to check that tomorrow on the Apple Support pages. How far VoiceOver has come
since 10.5 is utterly amazing. It puts things into perspective for sure. For
those of you who complain about what's wrong with Mountain Lion, try working
with Leopard and see how much Apple accessibility has done with the product

Re: iMac Temperature

2012-11-04 Thread Esther
Hi Max, Chris, Tim, and Others,

If it's the same Temperature Monitor application we've been using
since Tiger, then the URL is:

http://www.bresink.com/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html

It was usually advisable to read the notes at the web site, because
there were sometimes performance issues for different specific
hardware configurations. Tim, I haven't tried running this recently.
what is the "mostly accessible" qualification under ML?

Cheers,

Esther

First, I think you meant to say refresh with cmd-r, not cmd-f5. Second,
I saw a Safari update when I got on the mac today (I had been on windows for a
few days). Does this most recent Safari update not fix things? I doubt it will,
but you never know.

Re: Discovered New Voices For Mac

2012-11-04 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I'll admit, their web site was a mess, not to mention a major! pain if ever
their be one! Then, once I bought the voice, they never e-mailed me the
password to my user account. They said I was logged in, yet I got an
unauthorized page when I tried to go to the link they provided to direct me to
my downloads. When I clicked the link to reset my password, nothing at all
happened. Finally, I wound up having to manually go to the link they gave me
in the initial e-mail to reset the password. Once I reset it to something I
knew, I got no confirmation on the page that it was successful. I just had to
trust it worked. Finally, once I started downloading the zip file of my
product, after much headache, I'm only getting maybe 50K a second, which for a
100 something odd meg file, is utterly crap! I should be pulling at least! 3
to 400K, if not more.

God help me!, if the interface to input my license isn't accessible.

We'll find out.

Thank you kindly,

Christopher-Mark Gilland.

I listened to a few. Personally I find them a bit choppy and not as smooth as
the voices you can get with the mac by default. Still, synthesized speech is
one of the most subjective things in the blindness community, so to each their
own, I say.

On a practical note, I had trouble getting the sound files to play. I had to
interact with the link for the sample, then vo-right to the actual link (not
the image), route the mouse with vo-cmd-f5, and click with vo-shift-space.
Sometimes I could just right click and select download file, but that didn't
work much of the time.

Good News about Safari and Bookshare XML Files

2012-11-04 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello, guys,

I know I, and others, and been having issues reading .xml files from Bookshare
in Safari. Sometimes, these files will load as blank within Safari. I decided
to load the .xml file in my Internet Explorer on the Windows side of my
computer, and it brought up an error that said it could not load properly. I
said to try and find a solution and report the problem to Microsoft, and that
fixed the problem.

So I went back to the Mac side and Safari, still totally lost. The file loaded
as blank. I went to the develop menu and emptied the cash, just in case that
could make a difference. It didn't. Then I say the option to "Disable local
file restriction" which was not checked. I checked this box, and refreshed the
page with cmd-F5, and the book loaded without problems. I am really happy
about this, since I can now read my book in Spanish that I have been trying to
for some time.

I hope this is helpful to some others who may have experienced something
similar. Please note that the "Develop" menu is not enabled by default, and do
not think, but it escapes me at the moment how to enable it.

Thanks,

Harry

I listened to a few. Personally I find them a bit choppy and not as smooth as
the voices you can get with the mac by default. Still, synthesized speech is
one of the most subjective things in the blindness community, so to each their

On a practical note, I had trouble getting the sound files to play. I had to
interact with the link for the sample, then vo-right to the actual link (not
the image), route the mouse with vo-cmd-f5, and click with vo-shift-space.
Sometimes I could just right click and select download file, but that didn't
work much of the time.

Well, for those of you that wish there were more alternatives besides Nuance,

How I Organize Classical Music in iTunes
Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at 4:36 AM

Classical music in iTunes is a disaster. The track and album information that
is downloaded with your album is an inconsistent nightmare, and leaves one with
few options for creating a variety of rich playlists—which is almost
exclusively how I listen to my music.
To remedy this, I have a system which overhauls the existing track and album
data, and appends those data with rich metadata so that I can create a variety
of smart playlists. Here is my recipe.
Tidy Track Data and Add Metadata

Fix Album Composer

Unlike many people, I keep the composer of the work in the Composer field (many
people move it to the Artist field). I make sure I choose one consistent way to
spell the composer's name (Dvořák or Dvorak? you decide and stick with
one—personally I prefer the "řá" spelling), then I change it to a [last name],
[first name] format. And, I don't include the dates of birth and death, we have
Wikipedia for that. Once you have a composer in your library, subsequent
entries will autocomplete.
Add composer to sort fields

I put the composer, in the same [last name], [first name] format, in the Sort
Artist and Sort Album Artist fields. This bunches the works of one composer
together, but will not break up multi-composer albums. If you identify your
albums by the artist more than the composer, don't do this step.
Fix Album Artist

There are two fields here: Artist and Album Artist which, as you might imagine,
represent each track and the entire album, respectively. For the Artist field,
I tend to put the conductor and orchestra first, when applicable, and follow it
with any highlighted artists along with their reason for being highlighted.
Each artist is separated by a semi-colon. So, for example:
Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic
Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony; Sidney Harth, Violin
Alfred Brendel, Piano
Stanislaw Wislocki, Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra; Sviatoslav Richter,
Piano
For the Album Artist, I typically put the most important artist first, without
any instruments or voices. If the album is known for the pianist, then he or
she will go first. If the album is best known for the conductor, then he will
appear first (why are there no female conductors?). I still join the conductor
and his orchestra with a comma, and separate other artists with a semi-colon.
For example:
Leonard Bernstein, New York Philharmonic
Fritz Reiner, Chicago Symphony; Sidney Harth (the piece is better known for
Reiner's work)
Alfred Brendel
Sviatoslav Richter; Stanislaw Wislocki, Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra
Now, I know what you're asking, what about those albums that have different
artists for different pieces on the album. Well, I personally hate when albums
have an Album Artist of Various Artists, but sometimes it is unavoidable,
particularly on compilation albums. However, if there are only two different
artists, I will join them together in the Album Artist field, thereby rescuing
it from the various artists section. The alternative is to break up
multi-artist albums so that they appear as different albums, but taken to its
extreme—compilation albums—this system breaks down. I vote to keep the original
album together.
Add Metadata

The Comments field can take a format-free string of characters, so I populate
this field with an assortment of metadata that describe the piece. These
include, in this order:
The Musical Period — Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century,
or Modern.
The Musical Form — Symphony, Sonata, Concerto, Prelude, Rhapsody, Tone Poem,
Fugue, etc. If you don't know the form, then put Form?
The Ensemble — Solo, Duet, Trio, Quartet, Quintet, up to Nonet, and Orchestra
Highlighted Instruments — Violin for a violin concerto, Strings for a string
quartet, or Winds for Mozart's Serenade #10 for Wind Instruments. You get the
idea. Instruments can either be listed as a broad category, like Keyboard,
Strings, Winds, Voice, or they can be listed individually, like Harpsichord,
Cello, Oboe, etc.
The Album Date — if you feel the need, the original date that appears on the
album. Often the release date, which I include as Rel2007, or the recording
date, which I write as Rec1965. I don't pursue these dates, I only copy the
date from the Year field here, just to have a record of when the album was
released.
Date Uncertainty — if you don't know the date of the composition, which, as
you'll see next, I put in the Year field, I place a Date? at the end of the
Comments field.
Fix the Year

I like putting the year the work was composed in the Year field. This is a nice
way to put pieces in context w

Re: Picking the brains of you Mac veterans

2012-11-04 Thread Esther
Hi John,

There's a NumLock F6 key on the old PowerPC laptops and the earliest
generation MacBook laptop models. Try pressing F6 or Fn+F6 --
depending on whether your F-keys are set to software or hardware
functions. The keyboard layout for these laptops had the volume keys
on F3, F4, and F5 for mute, volume down, and volume up. On these
models you could always get the embedded numeric keys to work without
toggling on the NumLock by pressing the Fn key in combination with the
corresponding key on the right -- such as Fn+i for the "5" key. The
other possibility is that you have Mouse Keys turned on, but that's
less likely. You should be able to use NumPad Commander with the
embedded numeric keypad, but you don't want to turn Mouse Keys on at
the same time. I think that when I tried this I lost the ability to
use some of the main keys like Control, Command, etc. and it was only
because I had set Mouse Keys to turn on and off with 5 presses of the
Option key that I was able to easily recover.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Pages and APA 6th edition style

2012-11-04 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Tammy,

I've mentioned several times on this list that I can send anyone a template for
the APA format. It contains all the necessary styles and heading formats. You
just have to type over the placeholder text and it will be correctly formatted.
Also, we put in examples of all the formats for references. You just need to
select that text and copy it into a TextEdit document as a reference guide.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Barcode scanner?

2012-11-04 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I didn't even bother doing the lighter version and then upgrading. The other
thing is instead of printing out the make labels, I bought the ones that the
company has. I don't have the proper printer to do all those labels just so, so
I don't want to go to the trouble. The other thing is, they have the paper
labels and the plastic labels. I Think they are plastic. Anyway, you can take
these plastic labels and stick them on two canisters, and even send them
through the dishwasher. They still work asking I go through the dishwasher.
It's rather Amazing.

Re: locking application for the mac

2012-11-04 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I don't believe that there is a keyboard command for this but you could go into
the Users & Groups pane of the System Prefs, unlock it with your Admin
password, then from the Users, Groups and Login Options List, choose Login
Options. Navigate down to the Fast User Switching checkbox and check it then
choose Full name from the pop-up menu.

Now you can press VO-m-m to go to the Status menus, activate the Fast User menu
and choose Login Window. This will essentially bring up the login screen but
and others will need to enter your password to get past this screen.

Alternatively, in the System Prefs, choose the Security & Privacy pane, then
select the General tab and check the box for requiring a password after Sleep
or Screen Saver. In this method, if you have a laptop, just close the lid and
when it is re-opened, it will require a password to login or press ctrl-eject
to bring up the Sleep, Restart, Shutdown dialog then just press "s" to Sleep
the machine. Because you have this set, it will lock your machine and require
a password to get back in.

HTH.

Later...

Re: Need help with time machine on network.

2012-11-04 Thread Ioana Gandrabur
Hello,

Are you saying that it is better to connect to the router rather than
connecting the cable directly between the two computers? Do you by any chance
know why that would be ? I just would like to understand this whole process
better.

Thank you for your help,

Re: Barcode scanner?

2012-11-04 Thread Esther
Hi Mel,

I also have Digit-Eyes, which is $19.99, and is used for both scanning
commercial bar codes and for creating personal audio labels with QR
codes that you print out. If you only want to try out the custom
labelling and reading feature on a limited basis, there is a free lite
version that can be upgraded to to add the main commercial bar code
scanning through in-app purchases, but you probably want the full
version. Here are the URLs at the app store:
• Digit-Eyes Audio Scanner and Labeler  ($19.99)

• Digit-Eyes Lite QR Bar Code Reader and Labeler (free)

Check their web site for tips and usage instructions:

Re: question for mac mini users

2012-11-04 Thread Alex Hall
You need a camera for Facetime, and at least a microphone for Skype.
The Mini, like all Macs, has a line-in jack, not a regular microphone
jack. This means that you either need a USB sound card into which you
can plug a normal, unpowered microphone; you need a USB microphone or
headset; or you need to use a powered microphone of some kind. I was
quite frustrated when I plugged my cheap desktop mic inot my mini and
nothing happened, but I found out that the Mac won't pick up signals
from a device like that, they need to be amplified somehow. A USB
device will solve this. Also, Apple earbuds with microphone should
work, but you cannot then use normal speakers as sound will come
through the headphones.

Re: how to remove an iPhone app?

2012-11-04 Thread Alex Hall
Double tap and hold on the app (double tap, but don't lift your finger
the second time). You'll hear three ascending tones, then vo will say
"moving messenger". Now lift your finger, then double tap normally.
iOS will alert you that deleting this app will delete all its content
and ask if you really want to do this. Find and double tap the delete
button and the app will be gone. Press the home button to get out of
this app moving mode and return to normal, otherwise any double
tapping of an app will prompt you to delete it.

Okay, what am I doing wrong? When I try this app, I see an html
content with next to nothing in it, just some frame which itself holds
nothing. I see no Facebook-related content whatsoever. I'm not
prompted to log in, and I see no menus, so it must be logged in
already... I'm running the latest version.

Re: question about hotspots

2012-11-04 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jürgen,

Hotspots can certainly be unstable, especially in applications where objects
are moved around on the screen. I also find that they can be tricky to set
correctly sometimes. I use them in Pages to monitor what styles are being used,
and for that, each HotSpot has to be set on each table in the Styles drawer,
but without interacting with the table.

I also use Hotspots when doing a crossword online. There, I set a Hotspot on
the current clue so that I can both read the clue while I'm looking at what's
already in the grid, and jump back to the clue afterwards. I then unset that
Hotspot and set it again on the next clue.

Cheers,

Anne
