I find the Mac brilliant when it comes to the intergration with iDevices.
Windows doesn't cut it in that area at all.

I don't agree the mac can't get the job done because it can. Its just
nice to have the best of both worlds and the mac with Vmware Fusion or
Bootcamp can do this very well. But if like me you have a Windows
machine then why not use it while it lasts.

Please don't miss understand me, I love the Mac, I have one but I believe
that if I'm lucky enough to be able to afford windows and a second computer,
than I should use them. I'm from Australia and I find the transcription
website that I'm studying from just doesn't quite work with safari. As well
I use a laptop for my job and I can tell you that a lot of work places are
windows orientated.

Fillable MS Word files on Mac?

2014-08-05 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I just downloaded an application which is a fillable MS Word file. I have
Pages, but instead of text fields, I see a table with some blank cells and
other cells giving the prompt (first name, a few empty cells, last name, a few
empty cells, etc). Is there a trick to this, do I just pick a cell and fill out
the information, or is this format just not supported? Thanks.

Also, eurpod.net/vmware has a great selection of abandonware which is
all legal as far as I know. The one I use is the windows xp vm, and with
the sound buffer configured, I truly feel like I'm using windows on a
native desktop with a good ammount of ram. Its just that snappy.

Buying Windows is needlessly complex if you want Windows 7 still. If you
are okay with jumping into Windows 8, and as you haven't used Windows in
a long time I see no reason you shouldn't go to 8, then it's easy. Just
go to www.microsoft.com and see what they
have. You can get Windows from other places as well - amazon.com
, new egg.com , and others. It will
be pretty expensive, but I don't have 8 so I can't say just how much. As
you are looking, though, you might see a bunch of options; get 64-bit if
you can, as there is usually no price difference between that and
32-bit. Don't get an OEM version, and, if you plan on hardly using it,
get the most basic version (Home Basic, if they kept the Windows 7
naming scheme).

As to screen readers, NVDA is a great program and is free. It is all I
use on Windows, and it does more than I need. That said, it seems a lot
to go through for just one website. Have you talked to the site owners
about making their content more accessible?

windows on mac?

2014-08-05 Thread Christina C.
Hi all,

Are there any resources, links, or books to walk me through the ins and outs,
risks, and benefits to getting Windows on my Mac? I know I can ask some
questions here but I fear I have way too many. I don't know where to start. I
don't even know where to buy windows or which version to buy? I don't
understand the 32-bit thing either, or is it 64 bit? LOL! Is it better to just
go buy a cheap windows laptop and use MVDA? I mostly need it for a flash based
website. :( If I put windows on my Mac I don't know if it's better to use
bootcamp or vmWare fusion? How do I protect my Mac when using windows? Way too
many questions. :) I also do not own a screen reader for windows. I believe
purchasing one, would be way out of my budget. Speaking of budget, how much
will it cost me to get windows on my Mac? I haven't used windows in many years.
The last time I used windows I was a zoom text user but changes in my vision
now definitely require a full fledged screen reader. I can't use zoom anymore.
:)

Thanks so much for any help,
Christina

Can anyone recommend anything?

Re: opus audio encoding on osx?

2014-08-05 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries

As was said before, VLC has supported Opus since about 2012:

http://www.jbkempf.com/blog/tag/Opus

The IETF version is used in WebRTC and I have to wonder why we still
have apps to download and install when it can all be done in a WebRTC
compliant browser now. Maybe it's easier to monetize an app than a page.
If everybody did go with Opus it would also mean that, at least for
audio, interoperability would be quite possible. Of course once you get
interoperable voice over IP, all kinds of FCC regulations kick in under
the CVAA so there is some incentive for all the players to remain as
separate islands.

royalties associated with them. Yet, for some reason, Opus is still mainly
only used by Open Source, WebRTC, and SIP.

Nice. Last I played with this was on OSX 10.8 and it failed horribly.
That seems to have been fixed in 10.9 at some point. Yay kaizen.

You can write it in LaTeX with any text editor, then generate a PDF file for
printing. MacTeX is available here:
https://tug.org/mactex/

Unfortunately the installer isn't very accessible. Once it is installed,
however, you can run pdflatex, for example, to generate a PDF document.

I don't agree the mac can't get the job done because it can. Its just
nice to have the best of both worlds and the mac with Vmware Fusion or
Bootcamp can do this very well. But if like me you have a Windows
machine then why not use it while it lasts.

In that case, you won't mind the loss of JAWS too much. :)

As for me, well, I use OS X most of the time now, but the deteriorating of
functionality is making me think unkind thoughts about switching full time
back to Windows, at least on my workhorse desktop. OS X 10.10 looks very
promising, but doesn't quite take away the bitterness for me. We'll see.
Probably, as usual, I will relent and make do with less.

In any event, people should be objective about their requirements, and if
that means using Windows, for heaven's sake use it!

Re: Fire Wire drive ports not identified in the System configuration utility

2014-08-05 Thread Kayaker
Hi,

What Mac do you have. If system profile doesn't see any ports, are you certain
your Mac has a firewire port? Apple stopped putting firewire on laptops a long
time ago. I will say that firewire is supported on Mavericks just fine. I
suspect one of the following is your problem:
1. Your Mac has no firewire ports, thus you cannot use firewire.'
2. Your Mac has blown the firewire controller, a common problem with firewire.
3. IF not 1 or 2, try resetting the SMC on your Mac. That sometimes will
correct firewire issues.

Best,

Faith doesn't give you the answers, it merely stops you from asking the
questions.
