Re: filling out a for in Safari on a Mac

2018-11-13 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Lorie,

To turn cursor tracking on or off, VO-Shift-F3.
When you need to find a command, press VO-h-h then type a key word and you will
find the results by doing VO-Down Arrow.

Cheers,

Anne

Simon,

Yeah, it uses a basic speech at a very low level of the startup process. It's
not really VO, just a set of phrases that are spoken. I believe it uses the
good old Fred voice.

Hi Simon,

Your various test-cases match my finings as well. Older hardware produces the
beep scenario when FV is enabled. Newer hardware does speak "username" and
"Password" at the FV login, but behaves with normal VO behaviours after the FV
encryption has been accepted.

I get the username prompt and then the password prompt as you are getting,

Vo is already speaking and I only have to enter my password, all prompted with
VO,
I had to check that file volt was enabled and fully setup.

That mac book pro is the non touch bar model and only 5 months give or take old.

However I have a mid 2012 Mac Book Pro running 10.13.6 which will not let vo
speak what ever I do at the log in,
But it does have the single beep for username, password gives 3 if correct.

Even if I tick the box to say start vo at log in,
It still doesn’t talk.

My mac book air mid 2013 also speaks at the log in screan and it’s running
10.14 as I’ve not updated it yet.

So I’m thinking it’s also relating to hardware and OS version

Either way the important thing is to be able to get in to the machine whether
it talks or not.

For my MacBook Air that I purchased two years ago the single beep is replaced
with a voice saying user name and the two beeps are replaced with the same
voice saying password. It still has the three beeps, though sometimes those
don't sound.

So, I expect that some of the behavior is based on the firmwaare.

Hi Simon,

If on iOS, you are totally correct. There is no need for a third party app.
The Files app that is stock with iOS devices has the ability to integrate
DropBox iCloud Drive and Google Drive and to move files between them. It may
handle One Drive as well, but I don't have it and have never bothered to check.

Don’t tare your hair out. The solution is easy.

First and foremost, you want to put Filebrowser on your iPhone. The free
version is what you want.

Now, you need to give it access to your Mac. You will use your Mac’s user name
and Mac password for this. Once they are joined together, you need to do this.

1. Focus on the file you want to bring over.

2. Click the share sheet. You will notice an item that says copy to files.
Do this. You will be asked for a location. Choose iCloud drive.

3. Now, open the Files app and from there, open your iCloud drive.

4. Now, focus on and double tap the file you want to have an effect on.

5. Now, inside the share sheet, you should notice an item that says “copy to
File Browser”. This is what you want.

6. Now, at this point, you can choose any location that you have allowed File
browser to have access to including your Mac and any folder or drive on it.
Choose your preferred location and copy it. You will see a progress bar
informing you how much has copied over and when it’s done.

7. Now, go to your Mac and press shift+command+i to open iCloud drive. You
should find your file there. From that point, you can move it wherever you
want.

HTH.

Re: bulk deleting mail

2018-11-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Hello,

You might want to try using Inbox either at inbox.gmail.com or the inbox app on
the phone.

Inbox does that Google automatic categorization stuff, but when you open a
specific category on the iPhone version there are a few buttons along the top.
These buttons will act either on every message (except tagged messages) or
every selected message if you have at least one message selected.

The buttons are:
Bundle settings: Mostly useful for turning on / off notifications.
delete all un pinned items or all selected items (if all unselected items then
goes back to the main view)
Done: Archives unpinned or selected messages.
Move to: pops up a list of folders. Can be used to recategorized messages that
Google gets wrong or to save items into folders / Google label

When looking at the list of messages with the action rotar, swiping down
brings up move to trash, swiping up is select item. Once one item is selected
the default action for double tapping switches from open/activate to select .
Other actions in the rotar are: pin, snooze, There is also a snooze action in
the rotor available by swiping in either direction twice.

Within individual messages you can also “snooze” and “pin” a message. These
When you pin a message the bulk actions don’t effect it.
If you snooze a message you pick a time (later today , next week, next month …)
and then the message disappears from Inbox until that time and you will get a
notification and then the message will be “pinned”.

On the web interface it is also possible to find ways of selecting an entire
list, but it is barely intuitive for those that can see, and I can only find it
by backward and forward tabbing a few times through the standard google mail
view.

Best Wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Is Safari less busy in Mojave?

2018-11-13 Thread Jonathan Cohn
AH yes, I highly recommend that you turn off cursor tracking while browsing
Facebook with Safari, and it probably would not be a bad idea when viewing
twitter either. In Facebook list of people that have liked a post, are expanded
when focus moves to them, videos start playing and I believe the list of
comments also is somewhat automatically expanded / contracted as focus moves.
For this matter, I find best results with Facebook on Macintosh is to use the
J/K to move next / previous through posts but this only really reads the posts
when you have changed Web navigation from Dom to Group.
I remapped the enter key on my numpad so that enter moves keyboard focus to
VO cursor, and shift enter moves VO cursor to keyboard focus. There are a few
places in the Macintosh environment where if cursor tracking is turned off,
then VO click actions do not behave the way they should. I suppose if I was a
good blind citizen I would report all of these to Apple. Certainly one other
advantage of turning off cursor tracking is that you don’t get as many
instances of VoiceOver repeating items as both Keyboard focus and VO focus move
into new windows.

When VoiceOver was first shipped, they really pushed the group navigation mode
on the web, but that is no longer the case. Sometimes it is nice as with
Facebook there are usually descriptions and/or label names for the articles
regions so that speech is limited to the appropriate level you don’t see the
reactions or portions of comments until you interact with the posting article.
There are some circumstances where group nav on the web causes links in the
middle of a paragraph to be read either before or after the rest of the content
in the paragraph, but I don’t think this happens with Facebook and group nav.

Of course all the above experience is associated with High Sierra or earlier
versions of MacOS.

Take care!

Re: Editing problem with Apple mail still exists

2018-11-13 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries
Hi,

I find it easiest to work in the edit area using arrow and text navigation
without the VO keys. So, interact with the edit area, then use up/down arrows
to read line by line, use option-left/right to go word by word and just
left/right to go letter by letter. Note, I'm not adding the VO keys to this
combination. Know that if you're travelling right, the cursor will land at the
end of whatever is spoken and vice-versa. You should be able to properly and
efficiently edit messages this way.

should work. Deleting the messages on the Mac in the Mail app is much easier
than doing it in a browser or on the iPhone.

Currently, I need to log into gmail on the web and bulk delete that way. It is
cumbersome and time consuming. Something I only do every other Month or so.

Any recommendations to better manage mail? I’d love to be able to do it via a

Hi,

Backup & Sync for Google Drive is what you may wish to use. I don't believe
that it is in the Mac App Store. You may wish to do a search for it and go

Re: Is Safari less busy in Mojave?

2018-11-13 Thread Eric Oyen
Um, yes and no.

A lot depends on what is being used on websites. Some sites I go to cause
massive slowdowns, constant busy errors and sometimes even full blown crashes
of Safari (it has a lot to do with javascript and 3rd party redirects).

Also, some of the social media sites (namely Facebook and twitter) still create
windows of high busy periods.

In some ways, it is less problematic than in high Sierra). I would recommend
the use of both Chrome and Firefox as alternatives should Safari have issues
that are not locally resolvable..

bulk deleting mail

2018-11-13 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all,

I’m hoping you guys have a better way to accomplish this. Using mail on the
Mac, deleting a bulk group of messages rarely translates over to mail on my
phone. I am using Imap and a gmail account.

Currently, I need to log into gmail on the web and bulk delete that way. It is
cumbersome and time consuming. Something I only do every other Month or so.

Any recommendations to better manage mail? I’d love to be able to do it via a
Mac app.

Thanks,
Traci

Editing problem with Apple mail still exists

2018-11-13 Thread Tom Frank
Good morning,
I still cannot make corrections easily on my 2012 27 inch I Mac with Apple
Mail. Today, I did find a work around. When correcting and error, I interact
with the text and move to where I want to make the correction. I delete errors
and add new text. However, VO will not read the new text. I have to turn off VO
and then turn it back on again. I reported the original bug to apple months
ago. today when I called Apple support they said engineers are still working on
the problem. the tech said he would escalate my report to the engineers. Let’s
see what happens.

Re: Forgot password for my secure notes

2018-11-13 Thread Daniela Rubio
Hello.

The reset option for notes password is in settings, notes, password.

you can reset the password for notes, but locked notes will only open if you
remember the password with which you blocked them, even if you reset the
password for the notes that you create from now on.

If you remember the pass for a note locked before you reset the password, once
you open it, the system will give the option to update the pass for the new
one. How ever, if you can’t remember the password that you used specifically
when you blocked that note, the only solution is to delete it, because there is
no way you can recover it.

I hope you did not lose any vital info. It just happened to me, and I had to
ask help to rewrite my credit card data.

Hope it helps.

Best, Daniela

Re: Frustrated, can't copy from google drive on Ipad mini 4.

2018-11-13 Thread 'Tim Kilburn' via MacVisionaries

From that point, you can move it wherever you
want.

HTH.

So is it possible to for eample use google drive on the mac to import it to

I tried to find more actions but the only actions you can do on google drive is

Hi Simon,

Your various test-cases match my finings as well. Older hardware produces the
beep scenario when FV is enabled. Newer hardware does speak "username" and
"Password" at the FV login, but behaves with normal VO behaviours after the FV
encryption has been accepted.

However I have a mid 2012 Mac Book Pro running 10.13.6 which will not let vo

But it does have the single beep for username, password gives 3 if correct.

Even if I tick the box to say start vo at log in,
It still doesn’t talk.

My mac book air mid 2013 also speaks at the log in screan and it’s running

So I’m thinking it’s also relating to hardware and OS version

Either way the important thing is to be able to get in to the machine whether

Sorry, I may have read wrong. I believe you said you are using (or getting) a
new Mac with only USBC? If that's the case you'll need to have a way for the
USB-A (the older ports you probably think of when you think USB) to talk to the
new USB-C ports. That's the adapter I'm talking about. The number, like USB2 or
USB3, is more about the speed than any physical changes.

Anything will work, as USB3 is backward-comptabile with the USB2 on your old
Mac. I'd definitely get a USB3 storage device, even though it's more expensive,
because it will be a lot faster.

As to the question of connection types, that's what adapters are for. Grab a
USBC adapter or three, or a hub, to connect your drive. If the drive is USBC,
then you'll need the opposite adapter to connect the drive to the old Mac.
Either way, make sure the adapter is able to handle USB3 speeds, as cheap
adapters that can't will bottleneck your transfers.

Then a few seconds pass and it works as expected

So, I expect that some of the behavior is based on the firmwaare.

From that point, you can move it wherever you
want.

HTH.

I’ve also got 2 USB-C Hubs one which has 2 USB-3 ports,
1 HDMI,
1 SD card slot and another USB-C pass through for power and Ethernet
And it’s small enough to fit in my pocket
I’ve got another one which has a couple more USB-3 ports and VGA and they are
really handy to have around.

I could suggest one of those if you needed to extend ports.

Correct. That's why you need adapters to go from USB type A, which most drives
and other connectors still are for now, to the new USB type C. Thunderbolt is
just a speed standard defining the speed of data transfer over the port, it's
not a physical aspect of the port's shape.

The MBP or MBA have these new thunderbolt ports. If I want to by an external

Leaning towards getting the new MBA, but it depends on what good deals crop up

No, they actually only have USB-C ports which handle only thunderbolt 3
