Strange problem with dashboard.

2013-09-16 Thread Gerry Cook
Hi everyone! recently i opened the dashboard, and looked at the widgets in
their, however, when i closed them items in the dock were read out. I heard
that shouldn't be the case and, was told to have a genius bar appointment
however i want to try and fix this myself without going to the apple store if
possible. Has anyone had this problem before? I'd appreciate any feedback
because if i leave a widget in their it won't happen but if i close or remove
any of the widgets, the dock is read out. Thanks.

Re: drop box

2013-04-26 Thread Gerry Cook
Hi mike i've noticed that the menue extras don't work like they use to and to
quit dropbox, is a little more difficult, because you may have to use the
trackpad, like you use to, rather than vo m twice which made it easier. I found
this out last week with the 205 version. I can get in to dropbox by vo spacebar
when in menu extras however, if you want to quit dropbox you may have to go in
to users and groups, and login items and uncheck dropbox from your mac when it
starts, up! that's how i've found it anyway. Thanks and all the best.

2, If you sign out of iCloud then text edit opens without interruption.

Re: Bookmarks in Safari Not Showing

2012-02-13 Thread Gerry Cook
Hi I had a problem with this about 3 weeks, ago and as a last resort

 Hi Brandon,

Scott Howell posted a solution for this a few weeks ago in response to a
question from Mary Otten. I'll paste it in below. I haven't encountered
this problem yet myself, but I would guess that it's specific to Safari 5.1
or Lion, or the combination. Another thing that it occurs to me to try is
quitting Safari, then using Finder to go to the ~/Library/Preferences folder
under your account using the Command-Shift-G Go to folder shortcut, and
delete the com.apple.Safari.plist file. Relaunching Safari should go back to
 the default new configuration.

 Scott's post:
 Mary,

THis is a strange one, but here is the solution. SInce you already can get to
the table with the bookmarks etc. I won't cover that. So, once you have
selected the set of bookmarks from the table:
 1. Navigate past the vertical splitter and the search field.
 2. When you encounter the horizontal splitter interact with it and navigate
to the right. THe idea is to hear it say Zero percent.

At this point Safari may go busy on you and my advice is to simply toggle VO
off/on and that should resolve the problem. Then you should be able to find
the table with the individual bookmarks. Unfortunately I have not found a way
to keep the table expanded, so you have to use this method until someone can
figure out how to fix the issue. :) Of course put a bug in Apple's ear at
accessibil...@apple.com, so they know this is really annoying.

some reason, I only get the search field, and not the table itself listing
the bookmarks. Only the sidebar with the categories, and the search field,
 show up.

I've tried using the splitters. The horizontal splitter only says
collapsed inside of it, and it won't expand.

Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do about it?

and the 2 tables i have are on the left bookmarks bar address book all rss

solution to unzipping multipart files

2012-01-05 Thread Gerry Cook
Hi everyone, I found a solution, to the unzipping multipart files by trying
stuffit from the app store, that an apple store person put me on to. when you
find the file, you want to unzip, you, vo shift m on the file you want to
unzip, then open with and use the choice stuffit and it anounces the
decompressed file in folder form, after a few secs, there's a progress
indicator too, and it seems to be accessible. I was told it only worked, with
rar files but it, seems it works with most files. when installed click on the
don't register button, and your good to go. Thanks everyone, and have a happy
newyear where ever you are.

Hi list,

Is there a way to turn off the trackpad entirely, while using a macbook or
macbook pro with Lion? When accidentally touching it, even when I am in
VmWare fusion inside windows, a whooshing sound may be heard, which means
I am in dash board. Of course, you can turn that off, but is there a way
to have the trackpad not react to me when I accidentally touch it? I know
you can turn on mouse keys, but that is not really a solution. Having an
external mouse or trackpad can be done as well, but I'm hoping to find how
to just turn off the internal laptop trackpad. Any ideas?

Paul.

Subject: Lion clean install

Hello,
So I decided to take the plunge today and do a clean installation of Lion.
I was pleasantly surprised how easy it was to install Lion. In fact, it
was so easy the whole process took less than an hour. VoiceOver spoke to
me the entire time.
So far, I've been using it for about 2 hours. I do feel that a clean
installation of Lion does make it run a bit more smoothly. I don't think
it's faster, but just more smooth.

There are 3 small anomalies that I thought were a bit odd.
First, during the installation process, it asked me to set the time zone.
This was normal. But what was not normal was the fact that it has my city
preselected. I just have to click continue.
Second, after installation, I just assumed I need to setup my Bluetooth
keyboard to work. No, it is already connected and working. How's this
possible?
I'm quite certain I had erased the hard drive and did a clean
installation. It's interesting that of all the settings I had, it
remembered the time zone and my Bluetooth keyboard. Why not my VoiceOver
settings, or Finder settings?
The third thing is probably more of a problem with Lion. When making
certain changes in System Preferences, you have to click the Lock button
to allow you to make changes. When you do this, another dialog window pops
up asking you to authenticate the administrator account. For some reason,
when this window pops up, VoiceOver will say that the authentication
windows is busy and it will stay busy for at least 30 seconds, maybe an
entire minute. I find this very bizarre. Finally, when it is ready, I can
type my user name and password.

Anyways, over all, it has been a pleasant surprise so far.

Except for the last 5 minutes. As I was typing this email, Mail quit
unexpectedly. I've never seen this happen before. But then, when I
reopened Mail, what a surprise, it saved a draft of my email so I didn't
lose anything.
For those who are having lots of issues with Lion, especially when the
user experience is not as good or better than Snow Leopard, I recommend
considering a clean install.
It is so easy to install. For iTunes, I just copied the music folder to an
external drive. After installing Lion, I copied it back and my entire
library is there. Can't get any easier than that.

I would not say it's more difficult, but it is a bit different. You
navigate more by item than by line, if you've used the web on the iphone,
it's very similar to that. Personally, I enjoy surfing the web on the mac.
The only time there is a problem is if you need to access flash content,
and that's Adobe's fault. I think voiceover is the best screen reader for
handling dynamic web pages, these are pages that change their content when
you click a link, but it doesn't load an entire new page. In Windows,
system access seems to handle this the best.

What do you use for converting YouTube videos to mp3? I haven't found any
accessible converters for this yet.

Re: iPhone keypad question?

2011-04-27 Thread gerry cook
I just wonder if you've got your phone in touch typing mode instead of
standard typing, because, in standard, typing you have to put your finger on
the letter, tap once more to confirm the letter where as you lift your
finger off in touch, typing once you find the letter. but i may be wrong I
hope its close to the mark.

Subject: iPhone keypad question?

Hello list, when I first got my phone when typing I was able to double top
of each letter in order to accomplish typing a letter. Now all it seemed
that the single tab accomplishes this, much sooner than I intended to. I
have some cerebral palsy, so I would very much appreciate being able to go
back to the double tap method. As it would allow me to type the letters I
want, instead of the letters that I'm trying to avoid. It makes typing a
very frustrating experience. Other any suggestions in order to go back to
the double tap method? Hope everyone on the list is having a great day.
Now back to trying to get some schoolwork done of course on my Mac. Cheers
everybody. Amateur radio call sign kd0iko.

Hi:
The function keys at the top of the keyboard are set by default to control
things like brightness and volume. When using voiceover, the function
keys are often employed to perform software related tasks. Therefore, it
is recommended that VO users change the setting to have them do Software
by default. This way, you might only require to use your FN key at the
bottom of the keyboard for things like volume, Pageup, pagedown, end and
home.
The setting to make the f-keys perform software functions is in your apple
menu, (ccl-option-m), under system preferences. Select hardware,
keyboard, and keyboard again, and check the box that says, use all f1,
f2, etc. keys as standard function keys...

how

2011-03-04 Thread gerry cook
Hi i'm new to this and the viphone list, and i hope to get useful info about
the most accessible multitrack recording programmes, for playing rhythm guitar
and dropping lead over the top of it. I'm not far off buying a macc but would
greatly appreciate feedback, being from a windows background. Thanks!
