Hey guys.
About the mail thing, just switch to classic layout under viewing in Mail’s
preferences. That way, you can navigate by and hide/show columns you don’t want
or need.

Re: Accessible Music Tagging Software

2013-09-05 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
That would work, but I want an app that'll go through my entire library and
make sure all of my music is properly tagged. I'd like to prepare my library
for iTunes matching at some point, so having the proper metadata is essential.
Also, I really don't want to go through every song and tag it manually. That
would lead to me ending up in a rubber room for the rest of my life.
Thanks,
Matthew Campbell.

Fwd: [Dropbox Support] Re: DB: VoiceOver Compatibility with latest desktop DropBox client

2013-03-12 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello all.
Further to the thread I started on the brokenness of DropBox's latest update,
this is the response I've gotten.
Not much, but they are aware of the issues. I'm hoping we'll see a solution
soon.
Enjoy, or not.
Matthew Campbell.

Hi.
I'm running the latest ML.
I've emailed a support ticket to DropBox. I'm hoping to get a useful answer. It
seems like this could be reasonably easy to fix in an update.

Hi.
This does work, however you can't seem to be able to access DropBox's settings.
I submitted a support ticket to them, and I'm hoping for something not canned
back.

2013-03-12 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hey all.
DropBox has released their new DropBox desktop app for the Mac. I have
downloaded it, and found a rather not so good bug.
When you VO space on the DropBox menu bar item, the DropBox menu does not open.
I'm not quite sure what is going on here, but I have a feeling I'll be
downgrading soon.
Hope this helps someone.

Re: ABBYY FineReader Express for Macintosh and Hovercam T5 V

2013-02-25 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
I've actually gotten this to work quite nicely. I use the HoverCam Express
software. The HoverCam Flex is indeed not accessible.
The Express software should come on the disk that came with the camera.
With the express software, some button labeling is required though in order to
make the most out of it.
Hope this helps,
Matthew Campbell.

Podcasting client for the Mac. Any suggestions?

2013-02-04 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
Other than iTunes, can anyone recommend a VO friendly podcasting client for the
Mac? I'm looking for one that will stream over downloading. This is something
that iTunes does not do well, and my Mac's SSD really isn't made for storing so
much stuff.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Mathew Campbell.

Hi.
Thanks for posting this, as I too have been meaning to ask that.
In regards to lists, is there a way to set the number of tweets shown in a
list? Someone I was talking too recently was annoyed that his lists only showed

Thanks,

Re: EBook reader for Mac?

Hi.
Another alternative to both stanza and Adobe is iText Express, free on the Mac
App Store.
I know that this app can read ePub formatted ebooks, but not books that you
have purchased in iBooks it's self. I'm not sure what other formats it can read.
Give it a try, its free.

Re: itunes 11 is out

Hi.
I think he means within the library it's self.
What I think might be the issue is the tagging of songs. If they aren't tagged
correctly, iTunes won't sort them correctly.
There are apps you can purchase that'll fix tagging if you want.

Hi.
iTunes 11 does have a new feature called up next. This only allows you to cue
up songs in the library though.

setting up spacing in textedit

2012-11-12 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello all.
I'm wondering if there is a way to set up spacing in textedit? Some of my
essays need to be double spaced, and I'd love to know how to set this up.
If there is a way to do it, how?
Thanks,
Matthew Campbell.

Re: Blind Mice Mart Movie Vault

2012-10-31 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
The pay for your downloads thing is probably from the SendSpace page.
They use SendSpace to host their movies. It's free though to download them, but
it's really slow, and you can only download one at a time.
I bought SendSpace max to get rid of that limitation.

Re: macbook air 2012 fan

2012-10-15 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello Chris.
I too have a 13 inch 2012 Air. I've only heard the fan come on once, and that
was when I was moving my stuff to this new Air. This does not sound normal.
Maybe take it to best buy and see what they've got to say. Also, you'll still
have one year of Apple Care support at you're disposal. Maybe give them a call
and see what they've got to say as well.

Re: Rogue Amoeba | Pulsar is no longer being developed

You're lucky. As Matt said, the Canadian Sirius dropped even legacy support for
Pulsar and we are stuck with that afore mentioned inaccessible player.

Rogue Amoeba | Pulsar is no longer being developed

2012-10-13 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello everyone.
This message is slightly off topic, but I know that some of you probably use
Pulsar for listening to you're satellite radio.

As it states in the message below, Sirius / XM is no longer allowing 3rd party
access to they're servers for online listening.

I have checked, and here in Canada, the online listening experience is not
accessible from what I can see.

I just thought I'd bring this to your attention.
My apologies if this has been discussed before.

Matthew Campbell.

Recent Moves by SiriusXM Have Forced Us to Retire Pulsar

Effective October 1st, 2012, Pulsar is no longer available for purchase. While
it is still available for download for existing users, we have no further
planned updates for it.

Why This Has Happened

Changes SiriusXM has made throughout the past year represent deliberate moves
to lock out others. Pulsar has always existed at the mercy of SiriusXM, and
their recent actions make it clear that they wish to lock out all third-party
players. We enjoyed both making and using Pulsar, and we'll be very
disappointed to see it go. It is clear, however, that SiriusXM wants you to do
all your listening through their web-based players.

Current Status

Sirius Canada and XM Canada Users
SiriusXM subscribers in Canada are no longer able access their audio via
Pulsar. SiriusXM Canada has moved exclusively to a new audio player, breaking
Pulsar. We no longer have any way to access SiriusXM audio in Canada.

American SiriusXM Users
SiriusXM subscribers in the United States can still access audio with Pulsar.
Pulsar connects to an older player on SiriusXM's website, which is still
functional at this time. Sadly, it is likely SiriusXM will remove this old
player and break Pulsar's access at some point in the near future.

Next Step

Use SiriusXM's web-based player

At this time, the only truly reliably way to listen to SiriusXM is via their
web players. It's clear that this is how SiriusXM wishes for listeners to hear
their content.

SiriusXM US Player SiriusXM Canada Player

Downloading Pulsar

For the time being, we are still providing a download link for the last version
of Pulsar. This version can be used by already-licensed users in the US.

Get Pulsar 2.3.4 from on our Legacy page.

It is likely Pulsar will cease functioning soon. Please note, this version is
not supported.

KeyNote Question

2012-10-11 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello all.
I figure it's about time to figure out some of the ins and outs of KeyNote, and
so now I've got some questions.
1. Is each slide treated like a mini document, and can I work with it as such?
2. When playing through the slide show with Command Option P, should I not be
able to read any text in the currently playing slide?
Thanks for any assistance.
PS: If it is not worth trying to make KeyNote work, are there any powerPoint
alternatives? I here PowerPoint isn't even accessible under Windows Anyway.

Re: Looking for eHarmony suggestions

2012-10-08 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi Eric.
I'm really not sure what to say. I don't have any issues at all with the
eharmony site in safari.
I didn't do anything to my profile. The only issues that sometimes come up, are
when notifications come up on screen. The close or dismiss buttons are usually
at the end of the page and when the button is hit, accessibility issues if any
are fixed.
I'd recommend contacting eHarmony. They're customer service is usually really
good. Maybe they can help?

the ram manager again. Some progress.

2012-09-30 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello all.
Following up on my previous post regarding an accessible ram manager for the
Mac, I came across a free tiny utility called purge.
This little gem has absolutely no interface what so ever. You just run it, it
does it's thing, and you have lots of free RAM once again. Seeing as there is
no interface, there is there fore no accessibility issues with it.
It now has a place in my dock.
If you want to find it, do a google search for purge for Mac. I got my copy
from macupdate.com.
Hope this helps someone.

accessible RAM freeing app for OS X

2012-09-29 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I'm wondering if any of you have found an app either free or paid, on the Mac
App Store or not, that will allow you to free up memory?
I've always used either freeRAM under windows or Maxmem under windows, but I'd
like an app to do this under OS X. Of course, this app needs to work reasonably
well with VoiceOver.
Thanks for any suggestions.

importing activities? Can this be done?

2012-09-26 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hello.
I just took delivery of a brand new MacBook Air yesterday afternoon. When I
exported my VO prefs from my old Mac, and then imported them in to my new one
everything imported properly accept for activities.
Does anyone know if activities are supposed to be exported when one exports
VO's preferences? If yes, shouldn't they be imported when one chooses to import
preferences?
Thanks for any answers. I'm feeling like this is a small bug that I should
report to Apple Accessibility.
Thanks again for any feedback.

journaling apps for Mac

2012-09-07 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I'm looking for an app that'll let me write a journal on my Mac.
I realize that I could do that in textedit, but I'm looking for something that
will allow me to organize and date the journal entries.
Of course, this app would need to work properly with VoiceOver. If it synced
with an IOS device, that'd be really cool too but this is most definitely not a
requirement.
Thanks for any feedback.

an ABBYY FineReader Question

2012-08-09 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi listers.
I'm wondering if any of you know if the HoverCam document cameras work with
FineReader?
I know that one can get the HoverCam T5V to work nicely with DocuScan Plus.
Thanks for any info.

Mac OS X scanning solutions

2012-08-01 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I am looking, as the subject line states, for a full fledged scanning solution.
I don't want to have to jump between several apps to scan a document for class,
and I'm looking for something that will work with a document camera such as the
hovercam products or similar.
Here is what I've narrowed it down to.
1. DocuScan Plus with the hovercam. I don't really like this solution because
it's cloud based, and it requires you to log in and have an internet connection
in order to use.
2. ABBYY FineReader express with something. I not sure whether or not a hover
cam would work with FineReader or not. Supposedly there is a Twain driver
included with the unit.
I'm sorry for the lengthy email, but I'm just wondering if I could get some
opinions on scanning solutions that can be done within a single app.
Thanks for any advice.
Matthew Campbell.

Hi all.
I'm having an issue when viewing content on the apple store website.
I'm looking at MacBook Air configurations, but the only mottle who's specs are
showing is the 11 inch. How do I change it so that the 13 inch Air is showing
in place of or at the same time as the specs for the 11 inch?
I'm using Mountain Lion and Safari 6 if that helps.
Thanks for any help.

2 things still not fixed in Mountain Lion.

2012-07-25 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I've found 2 things so far that haven't been fixed in Mountain Lion.
1. Tables in documents. These still appear to not work properly with VoiceOver.
VO still announces new line new line when I tried this just now.
2. Web page selection. This still doesn't work. I know that the web page
scrolls when I move with the arrow keys, but VoiceOver is still not reporting
that the page is scrolling.
I think I'll be sending these findings to Apple Accessibility to see what they
have to say about these really old issues.
Sorry to spoil the good mood of the new OS launch,

What version of fusion are you running?
I'm running 4.1.3, and everything is working fine here.
I'm not using Jaws though, so I'm not certain how well that'll work.

Use VO Command H to go to the next heading. THis should be the mountain Lion

Hi everyone.
I'm wondering what verbosity option I need to change so I can stop VO from

This is especially annoying in both mail and the Japanese swearword. When you
try to scroll through tweets and messages, you're message or tweet gets
interrupted by VO saying how many rows were added.
If anyone can help, That'd be awesome.

Hi.
I'd learn to use quicknav. You can activate this by pressing both the left and
right arrow keys at the same time.
If you've used an iPhone with a wireless keyboard before, the commands will be

If you were to go the route of purchasing a wired keyboard with numpad, that'd
be one more thing to carry around with you if you're Mac is a laptop.

Hi.
The reason you're arrow keys aren't working is because you have quicknav turned

May I suggest getting started with VoiceOver first? A good way to do that is to
press control option command f8 to run through the voiceOver quick start.

Hi Mike.
It used to until I figured out that little trick I told you about.
It seems to happen when I press one of the keystrokes that goes somewhere such
as command shift a to go to the applications folder.

2012-07-06 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi Mike.
What I do when my finder gets busy is switch to another app and then reload VO.
This seems to fix the problem. I've been meaning to write Apple Accessibility
for a while now about this issue but haven't gotten around to it.
HTH,
Matthew Campbell.

chooser menu. This menu wil allow you to see any hidden windows.

Hi.
It worked that way in SL with Safari 5.0. As soon as 5.1 came out, that ability

Hi.
I think "List view," is what is meant.
This happens when you connect an empty drive and you try to go in to the empty
drive in the finder. That actually happened to me this weekend with my new

I had to boot up my Windows VM in order to get all of my stuff on it.

Hi.
You can use VO at the login screen.
Go in to users in system preferences, unlock so you can change options, then go
back to near the top of the window and find login options under all of the user
accounts. Once in there, you will find a check box to use VO at the login
screen.

Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?

2012-07-02 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
As for me, I'd like to see a few things fixed. I wouldn't however, call them
bugs, more accessibility issues.
I'd like to see table's in textedit and other word processors become accessible
to VoiceOver.
The connect as button in the network view of finder isn't accessible while
using column view. I'd like to see this fixed even though it's been that way
since 10.5 Leopard.
Another thing that would be nice to see fixed is the iWork suite as a whole.
I'd like to be able to use all 3 apps without having to jump through numerous
whoops, standing on my head, and counting backwards from 1000.
Finally, I'll add my voice to better performance from VoiceOver in Safari. This
"Busy, busy, busy," nonsense is really annoying! Another safari thing that'd be
nice to see is if VoiceOver would respond when pressing the regular arrow keys
by them selves. Pressing the arrows for a sighted user scrolls the web page and
until safari 5.1, this worked with VoiceOver rather nicely. Last but not least
is link menus only work randomly when one presses VO shift M instead of all of
the time as they should.

Re: can you upgreat your MBA2012?

2012-06-30 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
To add to what Daniel said, this is the air not the pro that is being asked
about.
The air isn't upgradeable. The RAM and the SSD are both soldered to the
motherboard. This is why the upgrades can only be gotten at the time of
purchase.

Re: how to extract audio from dvd

2012-06-25 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
What I do is a two step process.
First, go and get handbrake. It'll allow you to copy the DVD to a video file or
set of video files.
Next, Go grab another app called MPeg Streamclip. It'll allow you to extract
the audio from the video files gotten by using handbrake.
I'd love to know if there is a simpler solution.

Matthew Campbell.

 Hello,
After working for more than 3 years with the mac , it's my personal
opinionthat more basic programs are accessible on windows then on the mac
 platform.

I find it more stable to work on the mac because of the integration of the
 screenreader voiceover with the osx.
The fact that the hardware is also adapted for us by the trackpad and the
 function-keys with the spoken values.
And of course the flexible way we can install , manage the system with
 voiceover support everywhere.

However, we can't e.g. configure dropbox with voiceover while this is
possible on windows, office programs like microsoft office and also
iWork's aren't fully accessible with lay-out tasks, in my opinion there
are several usability issues with the browsers on the mac, some
ellements of the os , like
Tables, on websites and on numbers and pages, are very difficult to
navigate e.g. you can't search for edit-fields on websites while they are
in a table and in pages, you can't work with tables on a comfortable way.
the icon's on the status bar, can't be reached on a normal way with
 voiceover...

My conclusion: a paid screenreader for the mac that makes program's
accessible with scripts (like screen readers on windows do), should be
 very welcome I think.
With this kind of optional screenreader, blind users should be able to use
all the equivalents on the mac of their windows favorites. Perhaps it
should push apple to make their screenreader better on a faster speed.

Why such screenreader doesn't exist yet?
I see 2 reasons for this:
 1. Apple should not be happy with this and the screenreader of apple
should have more possibilities to integrate with the os then the external
 screenreader.
 2. Other communities don't see a reason to make a screenreader for the mac
while there is one built in.
If it should be the second reason, any people with accessibility
frustrations on the mac , should communicate this to other companies
like gw micro, freedom scientific, baum...

Any opinions about this meanings should be very welcome.
 kind regards,
 William Windels

Re: is a paid screenreader for the mac a option?

2012-06-25 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
Adding to what Ray said, It doesn't seem really that necessary for there to be
a 3rd party screen reading option for the Mac. Something like that will
probably cost $1 or something else ridiculous and there will probably be an
SMA every version or so for another $1000.
It seems like there's a lot of improvements to VO coming down the pipeline in
Mountain Lion. Maybe they will fix some of the minor annoyances with VoiceOver.

Do a google search for a key mapping utility called sharp keys.
This should work well for you.

Re: VMWare Fusion questions

2012-06-23 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
In regards to the upgrade process, I didn't have any issues when I did this a
year or so ago. I am using NVDA as my windows screenreader and everything when
very smoothly. So smoothly in fact, that it is what made me purchase the Fusion
4 upgrade in the first place.
In regards to the video issues, I use NVDA and as NVDA has no video intercept,
I have never gotten video intercept issues. I stopped using Jaws about a year
ago because of similar issues as well as they're insane licensing scheme. I'm
not going to go on about such a licensing scheme because that would be getting
off topic and would be insulting users of jaws.
It really is a shame that Fusion is our only option for accessibly installing
windows in a virtual environment on our Macs. Parallels and VirtualBox would
both be great options if they'd just do some work and make they're apps
accessible.
Have an awesome weekend everyone,
Matthew Campbell.

An update on scanning software

2012-06-17 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I've gotten this message from the developer of VueScan. This is a feature I'm
sure some of you on here have put in a request fore. I my self requested
auto-rotation of text back in 2008 [according to this message].
This is his response about this feature. I'm sure that this will make scanning
a lot easier for some.
Hope this helps someone,
Matthew Campbell.

VO support for FireFox.

2012-06-16 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I'm messing around with the nightly build of FireFox. I understood that this
was supposed to be at least partly accessible.
Seems to me that it's just as bad as it ever was. Might I be doing something
wrong? I don't see any HTML area, toolbar, scroll area, nothing. All I see are
buttons for close, full screen and zoom.
Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this.
Matthew Campbell.

2012-06-15 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
This is why I didn't say exactly what the feature is or how this feature works.
I'm not going to respond to anymore of these types of messages as I don't want
to start a possible flame war over something so silly.
Kind regards.

Re: VMWare Fusion questions

2012-06-04 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
It's not entirely fusions fault when you're jaws activation key craps out. It's
jaws crying fowl if anything about the computer that it's running on changes.
I've even just upped the amount of RAM once and jaws cried fowl and deactivated.
So to answer you're question, Jaws would probably deactivate if you were to go
this route. This is one of the reason's I am using NVDA when I need to use
windows.

OS X usually has great printer support built in. THe best thing you can do is
just to plug it in and see if it shows up under print and fax in system

Re: VMWare Fusion questions

2012-06-03 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
A couple of things to keep in mind.
1. If you do go the boot cam route, you will need sighted assistance to get
windows installed. Also, you'll be able to have Fusion treat the bootcamp
partition as a virtual machine. This has some advantages such as being able to
utilized all of the Mac's resources when you need to do something that needs a
lot of them but still able to boot in to windows quickly through fusion when
you don't need to do something system intensive.
2. The quick install option in fusion will have fusion install windows without
sighted assistance. The only thing you need do after installation is install
you're screen reader of choice.

some questions about the bookport plus. Please answer off list.

2012-05-03 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi all.
I've got a couple of questions about the book port plus and I'd like to ask
those of you who can answer them to please do so off list. This is not at all
Mac related.
1. Are they're any lists for people who do use the book port plus?
2. I know that on the victor stream, one can search for a particular string of
words or characters. Can this be done on the book port plus?
3. I read rather large text files on the victor stream but have to listen to it
say "Please wait," several times before it finally loads the file. Is the
Bookport fast at loading larger text files?
4. This is the only Mac related question I have. How well does the book port
transfer software for Mac work with Voiceover? Is it worth it?

Thanks to any of you who can help. To the list mods, sorry for posting this on
list.

Matthew Campbell.

Re: Skype on the Mac made accessible?

2012-05-01 Thread Matthew Campbell
Hi.
I would think that iTunes for a new Mac user would be way more difficult to
tackle than a small bit of navigation through Skype.
I think it's all in the user's head about how difficult such a small bit of
navigation could be. There's the finder, mail, Safari, the previously mentioned
iTunes, and even the setup of the Mac has lots moor navigation.
If a new user goes through the VO tutorial like the should be doing,
applications like Skype shouldn't really be an issue.
Just my thoughts.
