Re: audacity help please

2015-03-21 Thread Alex Hall
Sound flower is broken in Yosemite, and hasn't gotten updated yet. I'm not sure
where it came into this discussion--I thought the goal was recording via
microphone, but I was obviously mistaken. Audio Hijack, from
www.rogueamoeba.com, can do what you want, and www.applevis.com has a podcast I
did explaining that app. You can record using Audio Hijack, then edit the
resulting files in Audacity.

Chris, I'm not sure why you'd want to switch to Audacity over Pro Tools, if you
already have it. Pro Tools is way more advanced and polished, from what I hear;
Audacity is great for a lot of things, but it's still free. If you have Pro
Tools already, I can't see an advantage is not using it and using Audacity
instead.

As to all the effects you asked about, I've not done that kind of work. All I
can do is point you to the online help and forums, and suggest you go through
all the options in the Effects menu. Those dialogs should all be accessible,
though you'll need to tab through them or focus won't follow you to edit fields
correctly. Keep in mind that Audacity can also handle any Nyqvist plugins you
want to throw at it, so you may well find a third-party effect you prefer and
use that instead.

Now, use R to record. Space will stop recording, and P will pause or resume

and have pressed space to stop it, repeat the process for vocals, and any

Use up and down arrows to move through your different tracks. Vo-shift-m

Re: audacity help please

2015-03-20 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
OK, but then how do you add a compressor to the vocal track? How do you add
reverb? Can I route my reverb through a send, then route it back into an
auxiliary track? Can I add E Q, and actually specify a 12DB oct? Can I roll
off say, in the vocal track, everything below 80HZ, then notch say around the
120HZ to 140HZ range up by say, 1.5DBFS? Can I read my peek input meters to be
sure that no clipping occurs, and that I don't peek above say minus 10DB?
Getting back to the compressor, will it let me dial in attack, release,
threshold, and input as well as output take up gain parameters? When all is
recorded, can I then add a master track where I can do the final mix masterring?

These are the things I want/need to be able to do with Audasity. If not, then
ehh... I'll just stick with ProTools as every! single! one of the things I just
mentioned above are 100 and 50 percent times accessible with Voiceover.

Chris.

Video isn't going to happen, Audacity is audio only. You could use iMovie or
another app for adding the finished audio track to a video project.

To do what you're wanting, just open Audacity; it will have a new project
open automatically. Hit cmd-comma, choose the Devices item from the table, and
interact with the scroll area, then review the items to be sure your audio
input is set how you want. Stop interacting twice, find the OK button, and
press it.

Now, use R to record. Space will stop recording, and P will pause or resume
recording without stopping completely. Once you have the instrumental track,
and have pressed space to stop it, repeat the process for vocals, and any other
layers you want.

Use up and down arrows to move through your different tracks. Vo-shift-m will
open a context menu, from where you can rename, move, and otherwise adjust each
track.

audacity help

2014-08-03 Thread Chris Moore
Hello,
I'm trying to use audacity to select a portion of a track. I know about the
left and right brackets to mark the start and end points. My question is how
do you adjust the markers? If there aren't some keyboard shortcuts for this
then the program isn't very useful to us.

I have other questions, but let's start with one at a time.

Re: audacity help

2014-08-03 Thread Alex Hall
I use comma and period (add shift to jump by larger increments) to move back or
forward, then the brackets to place my marker(s) again. There are commands to
move the markers by small increments, but I've always found it easier to do the
movement myself. I don't recall the commands now, but if you go to Preferences
Keyboard, you can find them, and many more.

Ok, how do you find the option to alter the sound of your voice? I thought I'd
found the vocode, feature at one point in time, but now that I've made a
voice recording, can't find the thing anywhere, which is one of the reasons I
downloaded the program in the first place.
I've been really impressed with the way people do that, especially with some
of the stuff I've heard in the song Walt Disney hits on parade, I think it
was called, that had a vocal track at the beginning of it, and the rest was all
instramental with a bunch of wild sound affects, and would love to be able to
do that, but have yet to find something that will allow me to do that.
I've played around with the voice changer app for the IPhone, which was ok,
but not 100% impressed with it.

I strongly recommend just reading through the manual. It has a lot of

keyboard equivalents (hence that list I suggested you look up) so ignore the

I've never tried that function. Again, you should consider subscribing to the

accurately. If you mention that you can't see the screen and need key commands,
you usually get them instead of mouse instructions.

Re: Audacity help.

2013-06-29 Thread Jessica Moss
Also, when it comes to recording, I want to record my voice for example, and
attempt to alter that, sense I was told Audacity can do that, but can't figure
out how to do that, can I please get some help in that area?

Those effects are pretty much everything you could want to do with files, and
there are plugins all over the internet to do even more. For instance,
changing tempo is done with the speed change function. You may also want to
google 'audacity keyboard reference to find the part of the manual that
lists all the possible keyboard shortcuts. You will have to adjust some
(often, use command in place of control) but they pretty much work on mac
even if they are written for windows. Finally, don't forget that some
functions can be accessed by right clicking tracks in the table, and other
functions, like how far arrows move, can be configured in the app's
 preferences.

I've just started attempting to use this program this morning, but at the
moment am having a little trouble with it. Perfect example, have been
trying to change the tempo of a song, but can't figure out how to change the
incraments to make it faster/slower, so it just stays the same, and same
with echo, so when it comes to that, it sounds really weird, so have no idea
what to do with that. As far as some of the options under effects like Audo
duct, all the stuff labeled Apple this and that,, and amplify, I have no
idea what those are, so would love to get some help getting up and running
as far as what the effect are, aside from some of the obvious, change pitch,
 speed, tempo, wawa, etc.

Re: Audacity help.

2013-06-29 Thread Alex Hall
First, open preferences (cmd-comma, as usual). I don't remember where, but in
one of the preference areas is a setting about applying an effect to the full
track if no audio is selected. If this is off, you can either turn it on, or
remember to press cmd-a before applying an effect if you want to have the
entire track change.

To record, just hit r. To stop, press space, and to pause or resume, press p.
Once you finish that, a new track is created which you can modify as much as
you want.

I strongly recommend just reading through the manual. It has a lot of
references to doing things with the mouse, but most mouse actions have keyboard
equivalents (hence that list I suggested you look up) so ignore the
instructions on how to do things and just pay attention to how Audacity works.
It took me a while, but I managed to learn how to manipulate audio pretty well.
Also, there is an audacity users list you may wish to join. I don't have the
address handy, but I found it with Google when I looked it up a while back so
it is easy to get.
