Re: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-16 Thread Kimberly thurman
Olivia: Bottom line concerning the Stream and the Mac... You will be able to
do everything with the Stream, except authorize it for Audible. Audible works
very very nicely on the iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. I believe you have two
of these. The NLS player is really worth getting though. I works great with
the Mac. I downloaded 20 books and put them on it yesterday. The Stream
really is a nice device and if you can get a discount through GDB, you should
go or it. I believe you will enjoy it. Maybe you can get a friend to help you
authorize it for Audible, on a windows machine if that is a deal breaker
for you.

 Hi Everyone,
I'm looking at the Q and A's that someone sent earlier today (Thank you,
who ever sent these! :) I have a few more questions, as all of the
material I've seen works on the assumption that people are using
 windows.
 1. How do you formatt the stream's card? The material discusses various
folders to copy certain kinds of files into. So, how do I take a blank
SD card and make it work with the stream's folders using a mac?
 2. Can I copy music files and put them on the same SD card as talking
 books?
 3. I'm assuming that the SD card would simply show up in the finder and
content can just be coppied between devices that way.
I'm still considering whether or not to drop the money on the stream, or
if I would simply be fine with my iPod, iPad, etc, as they work better
with a mac. I would welcome people's thoughts and opinions!
 Thanks!

RE: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-15 Thread Simon Fogarty
I have both an IPod touch and a victor stream, and I use both.
I find the stream great at night because of it's sleep timer. I can set it
and it turns off if I've fallen asleep.

My Ipod doesn't or at least I haven't found the function to allow it to auto
switch off.

The only problem I really have with the victor stream, is that it at least
mine which is about a year old, is limited to 16gig sd card storage. So my
Ipod has more storage capacity. But the stream plays more book formats than
the Ipod. Each has it's good and bad points.

Re: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-15 Thread Dan Roy
Right, but, most people who live in the US are eligible for the free NLS player
which does the job nicely. the only down side to that free player is that it's
quite large. This was done intentionally to facilitate people who have various
physical disabilities as well as those who are elderly and not used to small
devices. However, the speaker on the NLS player as well as the battery life
are wonderful. if I would have had this player when I bought my stream, I
wouldn't have bothered.

Now, that its not fully compatible with the MAc, I don't think I would even
recommend it. there are much better ways of playing audio than a victor stream.

Re: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-14 Thread Allison Manzino
Hi Olivia,

I think I can help you. I say think very lightly. I used to be a Stream user
who used Windows, and obviously now have switched to the Mac. Okay let me see
if I remember the first question, to format the SD card, you do it on the
Stream directly. This is accomplished by pressing the 7 key on the numpad a few
times till you hear format SD card. It will ask you to confirm by pressing the
pound key. Once you press it, it will say formatting SD card and report back
when the format is complete. Once that is done, you will have folders like VR
audible, VR music etc. Yes, you can place talking books on the same card as
music. You just place the talking books in to the VR DTB folder. I'm switching
from the stream to the Ipod on my Iphone, I think the largest card the Stream
can handle is a 16GB but I could be wrong. It is much faster if you were to get
a Stream to copy content via the card reader than the Stream's USB port itself.
The Stream shows up on the desktop once you insert the SD card in to a card
reader. You just hit command O to open like normal and all the folders are
there. I hope this has helped you. The only thing I'm unsure about is the
Audible authorization. That might have to be done on a Windows machine, since
the Audible version on the Mac assumes you are using Itunes on an Ipod. Well, I
hope I have helped. Have a wonderful day. Thank you for your help on the
Iphone, it is much appreciated.

As a stream user I would say this. Remember you will also have to pay for a
storage card. That being the case, if I didn't have one I would regard any
Apple device with 16 GB, or even better 32 or the incredible 64 GB of
storage as a better bet. Synchronising will be much easier and I can't think
of anything the stream can do that Apples can't provided you have a Daisy

apart from the Stream, and in some ways is much better.

 1. How do you formatt the stream's card? The material discusses various
folders to copy certain kinds of files into. So, how do I take a blank SD
card and make it work with the stream's folders using a mac?

You insert the card into the stream and it creates the folders for you.

 2. Can I copy music files and put them on the same SD card as talking

Yes, you put them in the $VRMusic folder.
 3. I'm assuming that the SD card would simply show up in the finder and

This is correct. You would see the streams folders through the finder.

I'm still considering whether or not to drop the money on the stream, or
if I would simply be fine with my iPod, iPad, etc, as they work better with
a mac. I would welcome people's thoughts and opinions!

RE: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-14 Thread Dave Taylor
If I didn't have a stream now, and I liked the way the apple products work,
which I hope I will when I get my hands on them in a few weeks, I would say
a 64 GB iPhone 4G would meet so many needs that a Stream would not be worth
the money. Given that I bought one a couple of years ago when VO wasn't
quite as well established and the Apple products not as good, it was one of
the best purchases I ever made. I'd like to be able to spell filenames and
things like that on it which you can't, and I wish it had internet access
etc. Things have changed a lot in two years!

Re: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-14 Thread Kimberly thurman
Olivia, I have the Stream and the Book Sense. I like the Book Sense
better. It's smaller, can record in more formats right out of the
box, plays NLS, Audible, RFBD, all sorts of text files. It's about
1/3 the size of the Stream. The XT model even has an FM radio and
blue tooth connectivity, of which the Stream has neither. Only
drawback to this is it's somewhere between $400 and $500 instead of
$329 or so. It works with the Mac very well for transferring files.
The XT model even came with an 8 gig card and 4 gigs of internal
storage, which is very handy. I hope this helps instead of confusing
you further. I do believe you would still have to authorize it on
Audible with a windows PC, but I'm not 100% sure of this one.

Re: some more questions about streams and macs

2010-06-14 Thread Chris G
Hi,

I'm going to play devils advoket here.

The advantage of the removable storage is this.
1. If the card dies, you throw it away and buy another one. Before I
get emails saying cards are not likely to die, I just had a 2gb die on
me. (smile)

2. If all you can afforde is 8gb, buy an 8gb SD card and when money
allows buy a 16 or 32 gb sd card. you still have access to your 8GB
card.
