you might check with Larry Lewis of flying-blind.com <http://flying-blind.com/>. He has represented Optelec for many years. He should be able to help you obtain the right power adapter. Ok sorry, I just was curious about it, considering the fact that I hadn't heard about those in ages, and the last time I'd heard anything about them, the only thing I knew about them, was that it was a linux-based note-taker similar to the pacmate. Hi again Kait. If they did not allow you to see the Brailliant BI, it has expanded quite a bit. There are now thumb kieys on the front, braille input keys, and it will of course connect to iDevices. however, I will say that I do not like the design of the input keyboard, as the spacebars, yes there are 2 of them, are too far from the rest of the keys. however, that's personal preference, so you may not find it is that big of a deal. Re: alva?
thanks Buddy. I did want the braille edge, but ADP doesn't cover that one, unfortunately. It was either the brilliant, the focus ones, or the alva. The brilliant they showed me had no input keys and was very simple. lol, I hate humanware, so didn't want to go with the brilliant for that reason plus the no input keys. I'm glad I said something now, because I might be able to change it before everything gets ordered. OK, Scott, thanks. I don't know whether I can change this or not at this point. It doesn't surprise me that they showed me an older display. I'll see what I can do, though, no harm in trying. Re: alva?
Hi Buddy. The Alba kind of reminds me of the old Braille Lites in that sense. You had a lot of flash memory that you couldn't do much beyond reading with, and very little in the way of memory available for editing of documents. Cait: As for the Brailliant, if the Edge isn't an option, I would also go with that. Though the Focus may suit you better as an input keyboard if you prefer the spacebar closer to the keyboard. If you are thinking of the Brailliant which does not have an input keyboard, which I'm guessing you are based on your message, there is a newer model called the Brailliant BI. I don't believe the older Brailliant displays are even on the market anymore. Scott On 8/1/13, Buddy Brannan wrote: > If you want braille input, check out the Himbs Braille Edge. If you want braille input, check out the Himbs Braille Edge. It’s $1000 cheaper, it has an SD card slot (so you can read your library books), plus other basic notetaker functions. I have the Alva, and its built-in text editor is stupid. For one thing, you’v got this 4GB flash drive that you can’t access from the thing, the text editor/reader only access the smaller couple MB drive. Eric, This is funded through ADP. My only choices were/are the brilliant, the alva, and the freedom scientific focus products. I really wanted a braille edge, but no go. It might be problematic to go back to get this changed.. thanks for your input, though. I haven't cemented anything in stone yet with the vender. why do you prefer the brilliant over the alva? I looked at the brilliant and while it seems sturdy, you can't do braille input on it. Re: alva?
I couldn't agree more about the Brailliant from HumanWare. You can upgrade the firmware yourself, and the advance bars aren't made of rubber like my old Seika4 from Perkins. Can't say enough about the Brailliant. Juliette On Aug 1, 2013, at 9:51 AM, erik burggraaf wrote: > Hi, It does work, but if I were you I would go back to your funder and > request something else. Re: alva?
Hi, It does work, but if I were you I would go back to your funder and request something else. I teach the bc640 and it's the bain of my existence. The dots fail all over the place and the support is abominable. Some of my resellers won't even sell it because the cost to support it isn't worth the markup. Now I'll have probably offended some users who have a bc640 and love it, and haven't had their one unit fail, but After seeing 10 or 15 of them in the last 3 years with about %50 attrition, I can't keep on recommending them. Especially with the braille edge and the brailliant BI available. Even a focus blue would be better than an alva. pairing the Alva BC640 feature pack with a Mac?
Hi all, In some discussions I've been having off-list, I've heard that as of the latest firmware release, you can pair the BC640 feature pack with the Mac and have braille input from the display. But someone I have been speaking with tried it, and was unsuccessful. Has anyone been able to pair and successfully input from an Alva BC640 feature pack? If yes, could you post some instructions? Re: pairing Alva BC640 with Macbook Pro?
Hi Allison, thanks. I'm thinking the code may be the problem. On my Mac, running Snow Leopard, there is no radio button to check that allows me to input the pairing code. Re: pairing Alva BC640 with Macbook Pro?
Hi DOnna, I don't have an Alva but I did have to pair my Braillino. I went through VO utilities and it refused to pair. It kept saying that there was a driver issue or something like that. I found the best way to pair was to go to bluetooth settings by pressing VO shift M as in mary twice. THen you right arrow till you hear bluetooth. THen VO space on that. You arrow down till it says set up new device or something like that. Select that and try to pair. If the Alva has a specific pairing code, like the Braillino does, you select the radio button that says specific code enter the code and hit pair or connect. I'm sorry I forget what the button is called offhand. I know I had to do this a few times with Earle's help from Handytech with the Braillino. For some reason my VO utility doesn't like pairing the Braille display. BUt once it's paired via bluetooth it's fine. I hope that helps. I love my Braillino and use it everyday as a Braille display and notetaker at work. Have a great day. Sincerely, Allison My birds are winged blessings, they help me soar! Do you hear the Alva initialization sound when you connect the USB to the Mac? I'm currently using one of these with a Macbook pro running Snow Leopard and it is working fine.
