I found that the way to get past that message about not having permission was
to swipe to the log in button, double tap and then log in and then go back to
the email, click again on the link and now I get an option to sign up to the
group!

HI All,

Just as a general reply, Mark and I will definitely see what we can do to try
to figure out what is going on.

My sincere apologies for the inconvenience.

As I said, we are still considering moving the list but we have more research
to do.

Just to give you an idea, at present with our current list membership, Groups
IO would charge us approx. $1200 per year to host VIPhone there and this goes
up as more folks join. I’m really not wanting to ask for donations so while the
cost is not prohibitive, we’d certainly love something a bit cheaper with a
decent feature set if we can get it. :)

It would also take quite a while to add everyone as Groups IO has more
stringent limits on how many people can directly be added / invited each day.

Lastly, I’ve sent their customer service a note several days ago now and still
have not seen a response.

So right now, Google is still the best option in the short-term until we find a
better solution. Trust me, we are still looking! :)

Anyway, thanks to you all and once again, Mark and I will look into these
issues ya’ll are seeing and see what we can do.

Please have a great weekend and please do feel free to direct any more
questions or issues you’re finding directly to me or Mark. This way we should
see them a bit faster.

Thanks so much!

Cheers!

Cara

Well, I don’t have an official invitation yet, but I did try clicking on the
link that was in the original message where you could supposedly go and get a
group subscription link that way. Except I got the same message that Max did.
You don’t have permission to access this content. You can try logging in, but
to do that, you must already be subscribed. I really don’t like Google. It’s
too bad we can’t go to groups.io.

Cara clicking on the link in your message to the list says I don’t have access

As for VIPhone, I'm thinking I may return. I just needed a break from the drama

I think if she did that, and since she has such a wide membership, we would
have to pay yearly. And some of us would have to sponsor the payment. Do you
need to keep in mind, that to bite off of that, it would be $220 for the whole
year. So each person that wanted to join, after the first hundred joined, would
have to pay five bucks. And who else how many people would actually wanna do
that. If this was of something of interest, I would not mind being the sole
pair and helping get the group up and running but if I did it and you wanted to
join after the first hundred members hand subscribe, you would have to make an
appoint to sponsor us at least five bucks. I do suggest looking at the
following group, that way you can know about the pricing structure and all of
that good stuff. Below will be a link to the archives. And actually, this is a
link to the pricing page that you can find on the groups io homepage as well.
But if you go to the beta group, and put in pricing, you can look at all the
thread that was talked about in 2020.

Re: Moderator Note - The Next Generation of VIPhone

2022-01-27 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Cara,
I am wondering if you contacted google's accessibility team directly
regarding the review request?
Perhaps I am wrong, but making that decision without notification seems
more like wanting you to upgrade your group to something else instead.

Best,
Karen

Re: Moderator Note - The Next Generation of VIPhone

2022-01-27 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Joseph,

Well there are obviously no guarantees, but considering that VIPhone has been
around for about thirteen years now, I think we hopefully will be OK until we
can think of a better solution. :)

We’re still not opposed to the idea of moving the list to a new provider and
the money, while a bit steep for a group our size, is not really the issue.
There were several factors which went into deciding to stay with Google Groups
for the time being.

if nothing else, it was actually the fastest way we could get a list back up
and running. Other providers would have taken much, much longer to accommodate
reinstating all of our members.

So this was definitely a consideration.

With that, I think we should probably close this topic here for now, and let
MacVisionaries get back to being MacVisionaries. :)

If anyone else has any additional questions, I’d be happy to answer them so
please feel free to email me directly if you’d like.

Thanks everyone and please have a lovely day / evening!

Cheers!

Cara

hey Max, no worries and you’re not thick! :)

yes, go ahead and click on the link in the email to accept the invitation.

I haven’t actually seen what the invites look like from the receiving end so
perhaps someone else here may be of more help regarding the actual wording of
the links in the invitation.

-But yes, you will need to accept the invitation to be a part of the group.

If you need any more help, please feel free to write me directly and we can go
from there.

Best of luck!

Cheers!

My only question is since Google kicked you guys off the first time what makes
the second group any different? I’m just worried that people are going to sign
up just to have the same issue arise who knows when! It would just be
interesting to know why Google did this so the second time around it doesn’t
repeat itself hopefully you guys figure that out soon. I understand that other

Re: Moderator Note - The Next Generation of VIPhone

2022-01-27 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi Michael,

Neither do we!

As I said, neither Mark nor I had gotten any notice whatsoever from Google.
Even before I’d had a chance to look at the group that day, listers sent Mark
and I notes letting us know that the group had been banned from Google and that
they could not access it.

Even I could not access the group from the My Groups page on Google. I actually
needed to search the web for VIPhone and then saw the banned Content notice
that everyone else did.

Fortunately, as group owners, Mark and I were given a button which allowed us
to proceed to the standard VIPhone page so we could at least try to figure out
what messages Google did not like and request a manual review of the list.

Google has still not reached out in any way, to either Mark or myself to offer
us any kind of information at all or to let us know if they’ve begun any kind
of review.

So we are as much in the dark on this as you all are.

I wish I could say more but I have no more to say! lol! it’s just crazy!

I’ll definitely keep you all up to date as soon as I know any more.

For now though, let’s all make the new group as much a home as the original.
I’m certainly going to! :)

thanks so much, Michael for your note and please, everyone have a terrific day
/ evening!

Cheers!

Cara

What exactly is googles problem? have they actually earmarked anything that

Moderator Note - The Next Generation of VIPhone

2022-01-26 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All,

I have some good news!

Mark and I have started VIPhone, The Next Generation. :)

For now at least, this list will pick up where VIPhone left off. At least until
Google decides to review us. -Then we’ll see what happens from there.

Over the next few days, Mark and I will be inviting all of the original members
of VIPhone. So if you wish, you need only wait for your invitation. This will
take a few days because we are limited in the amount of invites we can send out
each day.

For those who would rather request a group subscription directly, here is the
link to the group page.

https://groups.google.com/g/viphone2

I know this is not the smoothest solution, but we’re a great group of people
and we will adapt! :) -And maybe even make this a better list than what we had.
You never know! :) -Either way, let’s all enjoy the new list!

Thanks very much to you all for your patience and please let me wish you all a
lovely day / evening, wherever you may be!

Cheers!

Cara

Cara, I know that some of your listers are on my group called blind apples
owner as well, I'm gonna forward this over there but I'm going to say that if
you know all of your subscribers, and have their emails, let them know that
they are welcome over on the blind Apple's list to ask their phone and Mac
questions. And just in case this list ends up having issues, I will go ahead
and say, feel free to apply if you're not already a member of blind apples
owner. You can simply send me a blank message to the following email address,
and I will approve all members.
And we're just as widely known as the iPhone group. But except we're not on
Google groups. Here is the joining address.

Moderator Note: Status of VIPhone

2022-01-24 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi All,

I wanted to post this here as some of us are on both lists.

As some of you may know, as of Friday, Google has prevented access to the
VIPhone mailing list because it says that the list contains spam or
questionable content. However, they did not alert either Mark or myself about
this, nor have they told us what the supposed content may be.

Mark and I have sent feedback to Google and requested a manual review of the
list in hopes that it can be restored as soon as possible. These are the only
options we seem to have available to us aside from just getting the word out in
hopes that someone at Google might at least learn about the importance of the
VIPhone group for the blind and visually impaired community and perhaps review
the list more quickly.

So I just wanted to let you all know the current status of the group and why it
is not available at present.

If anyone does happen to have any contacts at Google or works there themselves
and has any way of getting the review process to happen a bit faster, then it
would sure be helping a lot of people.

Like MacVisionaries, VIPhone also has a large following and provides a valuable
resource for many blind and visually impaired folks. So anything anyone can do
to either help get the word out or at least update people on the status of the
list, it would sure be appreciated. :)

Thanks so much to you all and apologies for the somewhat OT posting. I thought
you all should know what is going on.

Thanks very much and please let me wish you and yours my very best!

Cheers!

Cara

Subscribing to the viphone list [was Re: Viphone list]

2012-06-24 Thread Esther
Hi Stacey,

I think it is possible for you to subscribe to the viphone list without having
Google account by having the list owner or moderator add you directly to the
subscription list. I'll dig up a recent post by Raul Gallego on this subject
and append it. However, I don't think that you have control over your
subscription that way -- if you want to stop receiving list mail probably your
only option is to unsubscribe, and then to try to start subscribing as though
you were a completely new user again, with the same waiting period if there's a
backlog on approving new user subscriptions. As Kawal explained, when you
create a Google account, you do not need to also create a gmail account for
mail. Also, if you have multiple email accounts, you can choose which of these
accounts you want to be associated with receiving the list email posts, or
change your email address if your current one terminates, and you can manage
your subscriptions (no mail, digest format, etc.) from your Google account.

Creating a Google account does require negotiating a Captcha, but you only have
to do it once. There is an audio Captcha option on the web page, but I find
those pretty bad, too, although it was manageable. I'll add that the default
page you are linked to if you choose to create an account from the page where
you are prompted to log in to the viphone list now makes it appear as though
you have to create a gmail account when you create your Google account. You
don't need to do this, and you also don't need to supply your phone or SMS
number to activate your account, despite being encouraged to do so for
"security" purposes.

Here's the URL to use to create a new account without also creating a gmail
account:
https://accounts.google.com/newaccount?hl=en

You need to supply your current email address and the password you wish to
create for your account, retyped to verify it. And apparently you must now
supply your date of birth (so they can verify you are over 13). That email
address is being used as your unique login for your Google account. If you
need to change your email address for receiving mail at a later time, or add
another email account that you'd prefer to use for your subscription instead,
you'll also be able to manage this yourself within your Google account. Make
sure to check the box for accepting the terms of service before you press the
"Create my account" button.

Once you've created your account, return to the viphone list page:
http://groups.google.com/group/viphone

Use the link for "Apply for group membership" and sign in with your Google
account login (which is the non-gmail email address you used to create the
account) and password. I'd add a note saying that you were previously a member
of the list, which they'll be able to verify.

At any later time you should be able to go to the "Manage My Membership" page
for your account at to change your subscription status or go "no mail" for a
while:
http://groups.google.com/groups/mysubs?hl=en_US&pli=1

There are more detailed instructions that posted for Teresa about changing
membership options, and you can read the archived post if you ever need more
information:
• Re: The New Google Groups Site and viewing/changing membership options?
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg64431.html

I'll paste in Raul's message if you want to try to subscribe via email only.

Hi Stacey.

You need to set up an account with Google first and it does not have to be a
gmail account. Once done, sign in, then look for Google groups. Once done,
find the VI Group and apply for membership and wait to hear that you have been
approved.

Re: My thanks to those at CSUN and on MacVisionaries and VIPhone!…

2012-03-06 Thread Cara Quinn
Hi David and all;

The subscription process is the way it is because it prevents bots / spammers,
or at least does a pretty good job. :)

Yes, it is a bit slow, and for that I apologize. -As I said though, the
benefits for filtering out spam are quite good.

On the subject of Skype / Google Hang-Outs, that sounds like a great idea, and
listers are, of course, really encouraged to connect up off the list if they so
choose. So the two options you mention might work really well for people.

Anyway, thanks for your note and keep enjoying the group!

Smiles,

Cara :)

Re: viphone and dropbox

2010-10-31 Thread Paul Erkens

Hi William and all,

Here's an observation concerning dropbox which I find alerting.

I am using it on a laptop with a u s b dongle, so that I have a 3g internet
connection on my laptop. Thanks to te dongle, I can see the upload and
download activity of my machine. Now when you start dropbox, it starts
indexing and synchronizing all the files in your computer's dropbox folder
to the website. After half a minute or so, if nothing changed, dropbox will
tell you so. Nothing to synchronize.
However, I noticed that my upload bandwidth is still being entirely taken up
by something. I closed down all other aps as far as possible but it remained
uploading. Then, I closed dropbox. Dropbox was idle according to its system
tray icon, but still something kept uploading stuff to who knows where. So I
turned off dropbox, and the ghost upload immediately stopped. To verify that
dropbox had been uploading stuff even though it told me that it had
everything in synch, I restarted dropbox and indeed, after the initial phase
of indexing and comparing, it told me all was in synch, yet the ghost upload
had started again.

Does any of you have an idea what is going on here? Do you think that
dropbox may be sending out stuff that we don't want to be sent anywhere? If
all is in synch, what is dropbox uploading? I'm just wondering. I stopped
using it right away, until I understand what has been going on. Do you
experience the same, if at all you can reproduce this behavior? Very
interested to know.

Subject: viphone and dropbox

Hello all,
I have installed dropbox on my iphone and it seems perfect accessible and
works great together wit windows and mac.

But, I have discovered that the files on the dropbox on the iphone, are
not readable when the iphone has no internet-connection.
I have set the cache memory to the max of 1 GB but , the dropbox is 2 or
more GB so, perhaps not all is available on the iphone because of that.

My question:
- can I set the cache-size of the iphone to the max of my dropbox and
should this solve the problem?
Or , can I save all the things in my dropbox , offline on my iphone (with
a external program)?

On the mac an windows, this is stored offline on the hd and synced from
there.

Any hints are very welcome

Best regards,
William

Hello all,

I have seen the function to put files in dropbox offline with the favorites and
it works. However, with this option, it's not possible to put complete
directorys offline.
I have zipped some folders and then I can take it offline as zip and unpack it
in file app pro.
But, when I open a file there to read, it has a full screen without button to
leave the text.

my question:]

how can I leve a file , after reading, in file app pro?

The only way I've found to deal with this is to mark the files you want to keep
on the phone as a favourite. I'm not sure if you have to go into favourites or
not after you do this, but it'll then download the files to your phone.

Hi Søren,

At one point I think you could simply send a message to subscribe, but
this got changed and you now have to go to the Viphone web page and
request an invitation according to an earlier post from Cara:

Actually anyone whom would like to sub to the list will need to
request an invite from the list's main page at:

http://groups.google.com/group/VIPhone

This is done so that potential new members can be screened to avoid
spam issues.

You can also go to the web page and read the posts without joining.
Unfortunately, the viphone list isn't set up to be archived at the
Mail Archive site, which provides an easier reading and searching
interface.

I'll try to answer your questions. (Responses follow excerpted
queries). I have an iPod Touch, but the gestures used are the same as
for the iPhone.
>>>
>>> 1: What is the difference between the drack gesture and the flicking

>>> icon?
Flicking is a very quick gesture where your finger is only in brief
contact with the screen. It's actually difficult to drag icons around
the screen by accident because you first need to execute a pass-
through gesture (double-tap and hold) before you can drag the icon and
also because VoiceOver will announce "moving icon" -- where the name
of the actual icon gets announced, like "moving Mail" or "moving
Maps". If you actually do move the icon VoiceOver will tell you the
row and column you're in, and until you lift your finger from the
screen the position doesn't get changed. If you get confused, or want
to stop, just move your finger to drag the icon back to where you
started, lift your finger from the screen, and click the home key to
get out of the mode in which icons can be moved. (This will also take
you back to the home screen in case you were moving icons on another
page of applications.)

The OS 3.1 update added a gesture practice area under Settings >
General > Accessibility > VoiceOver where if you double tap the
"Practice VoiceOver Gestures" button you'll be taken to a screen where
VoiceOver announces the gestures you've used and their function --
kind of like a gesture-based keyboard practice mode. If you flick, you
might hear "flick right, move to next item"; or if you issue the pass-
through gesture, you'd hear "double-tap and hold, drags the item".
(The only thing is, you won't hear the small burbly noise that is
played when you correctly perform a pass-through gesture of double-tap
and hold.)

>>>

When reading mail in your Inbox you can use buttons for previous mail
and next mail to go through your messages. (What's a bit odd is that
the latest message is at the top of the list, so if you start further
down the list at your first unread message you end up tapping the
"previous message" button to move through mail, and I haven't found a
way to change sort order.) If you start from a listbox you can
navigate either by selecting individual items by touch or by using
gestures to move through items or pages. For example, you can do a
two-finger upward flick to "read all" on the page, and you will hear
not only the buttons at the top of the page, but also the list of mail
with sender, time, and subject. This will read through the list
including scrolling, and you can stop with a two-finger tap. You
could also touch the center of the screen (probably close to where you
stopped the list reading) and move your finger up or down and have the
entries read to you, then double-tap on a spec

Hi,

Somebody said that joining Google Groups would help. I tried that and
it didn't make any difference. I still get the message that the list
is moderated. I did, however, have a lovely experience with the Solona
captcha
solving service. It worked like a charm.O

Then that explains it, thanks...

Just don't say anything important until we all get on:) I hate going
backwards to read old messages.

I hope to have my iPhone soon. Since my employer requires me to have a
phone I'm trying to get them to spring for it. About 9 months ago they
finally gave me what they call an accessible phone. I can make the
font just so slightly larger, and it speaks when you go into the
contacts menu. Doesn't read contacts, just the menu. Now that there is
a true off the shelf solution I want it.

I just subscribed to the aiphone group and it did it first try with no
delay. In face it pushed the page refresh showing I'm subscribed.

Yes I have a google acct, not a google email address, but do have an
account.

The aiphone group doesn't appear to be active though, very few
messages. I think Google has some issues also, shows number of members
as 0.

Hello Robert and all:

I do not know if you have a google account already or not. You will
have to get a google account to subscribe to the list. Once you have a

subscribe. say yes and presto ... you are in ... or at least that is
what worked for me.

Re: Subscribing to the viphone list

2009-06-29 Thread Josh de Lioncourt

I believe that you just need to wait for the moderator to aprove you
request now. You can shoot her off an email to caraqu...@caraquinn.com

She had to put the list into moderation, as a spam bot started posting
to it, and as she's gone for a few days, it may take some time to
aprove your request. :)

Re: Subscribing to the viphone list

2009-06-29 Thread Simon Cavendish

Robert,

I had a similar problem. Apparently to be able to subscribe to lists
in Gogglegroups, you have to have a google account. There's a link on
the page on googlegroups which says "join" and on the next page
"create a new account" link. The only trouble is that in thep process
of creating a new account, you have to enter some graphically
represented letters and numbers into a box. A blind person requires
sighted assistance to achieve this. There's an alternative link which
gives you audio representations of these characters but I spent a
couple of hours trying to hear the letters and I couldn't because they
are so distorted. So I had to get sighted assistance. Hope this helps.

With best wishes

Simon

Subscribing to the viphone list

2009-06-29 Thread Robert Carter

Hi,

When I send an email to subscribe to the viphone list, I get an email back
from google groups saying that it is a moderated list and one cannot
subscribe via email. It gives me a link for more information but the page is
just a sign up page to join google groups.

How do I proceed from here? I really want to join this list.

Thanks,

Robert Carter
