Hi,

Once the Word count is shown, there will be a pop-up menu item at the top level
of the Pages window with the Word/Line/Paragraph/etc counts. Press on that

The Character count item should be a menu item. that is, if you've already
made it show the count from the View menu, just VO-space on the Character count
item, then arrow down to Word count. Whatever count that was visible on the
last viewing in that document will be the count that shows next time you open

Donna,

ON my Macintosh, the word count is immediately after the toolbar. After the
word count is the region that contains the document contents. If you click on
the word count it will provide paragraph character, and page counts.
Best wishes,

Re: Word count scripts

2017-02-12 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Jonathan,

I shared scripts for this sort of counting in a different post. I'm thinking
that Brian was simply commenting on these scripts, not asking for them. I
could be mistaken though. In either case, here's the gist of the script I
shared:

if application "TextEdit" is running then
tell application "TextEdit"
set WordCount to the number of words in the the front document
display dialog ("The wordcount is: " & WordCount)
end tell
else
display dialog "Error. TextEdit is not running."
end if

When the script is called with a VO Keyboard Commander shortcut, it's important
to have some error checks. I've had this one display a dialog instead of VO
just announcing the count so that it's easily read out again if needed.

The delay is there because you need to give VoiceOVer a chance to produce

Also, for mail the Document property would not work but "body would work if

Word count scripts

2017-02-12 Thread Jonathan Cohn
This should be a one line script, but I believe that in some some applications
it will not work.

A general script would be
tell frontmost application
set CharacterCount to the count of characters of document 1
end tell
set spokenText to "The character count is " & CharacterCount
tell application "VoiceOver" to output spokenText
delay 3 Best wishes,

The delay is there because you need to give VoiceOVer a chance to produce
output before the script exits. I am not quite sure about the frontmost
application, and it also might be that some word processors would need you to
specify a window for the document.

document of window 1 or document 1 of window 1
Also, for mail the Document property would not work but "body would work if
that is what you are after.

Best wishes,
Jonathan Cohn

2015-08-02 Thread Paul Erkens
Hi Jim and others,

What a wonderful tip that is. I have been running into mac versus unix files
since I’m using mac and windows side by side. Word count, sort lines, convert
from mac to windows formatting etc, wow. Thanks a lot. And for those
interested: yes, it’s in the mac app store. Still exploring all its
capabilities.

Hth,
Paul.

Re: word count in text edit

2015-07-30 Thread Jim Gatteys
actually that's not where I got the word count. It is an apple script that I
converted to run like an app. Not sure if I can post it to this list but if
you want to email me I can send it as an attachment. Not sure where I got it.

Hi!
If you look for an app called word service it will let you install several
services that work with many applications and one of them is a word count
service. Also sorting is another handy service that I use quite a bit.

You'd assign it to a commander, at least that's the easiest way I can think of.
You'll also need the Talking Dashboard scripts, since that zip file contains

In the meantime, here's the script. Just copy the below lines, open up Script
Editor, paste, and save the script in the same place as the other Talking
Dashboard ones. It's not tested very much--I wrote it in about fifteen
minutes--but it runs on my machine and doesn't require Yosemite. Be warned
that, if TextEdit is not running when you run this script, the app will launch
itself. Anyway, here is the script:

(* Keywords:

$wordCount: the number of words in the currently open document in TextEdit

$characterCount: the number of characters in the currently open TextEdit
document

$name: the name of the currently open document

*)

set template to "$wordCount words ($characterCount characters) in $name."

set utilities to import("utilities.scpt")

set {wordCount, characterCount, documentName} to {0, 0, ""}

tell application "TextEdit"

set my wordCount to count (words of document 1)

set my characterCount to count (characters of document 1)

set my documentName to name of document 1

end tell

set keywords to {{"$wordCount", wordCount}, {"$characterCount",
characterCount}, {"$name", documentName}}

set template to str_replace(keywords, template) of utilities

tell utilities to speak(template)

on import(filename)

set p to (path to me) as text

set oldDelimiters to text item delimiters of AppleScript

set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ":"

set scpt to load script file (((text items 1 through ((length of

set text item delimiters of AppleScript to oldDelimiters

Re: Looking for a Script to Give a Word Count in TextEdit

2015-03-27 Thread Alex Hall
I'm glad it works. :) Anyone else can use it too, so long as you have Talking
Dashboard:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17005121/talking%20dashboard.zip

Again, this script will be in the next update to that, but it will work right
now if you paste the code into Script Editor and save the file in the same
folder as the other Talking Dashboard scripts.

Re: Looking for a Script to Give a Word Count in TextEdit

2015-03-27 Thread Alex Hall
It's not, but you have a great point. I'll add that to the next version.

*)

set template to "$wordCount words ($characterCount characters) in $name."
set utilities to import("utilities.scpt")

set {wordCount, characterCount, documentName} to {0, 0, ""}

tell application "TextEdit"
set my wordCount to count (words of document 1)
set my characterCount to count (characters of document 1)
set my documentName to name of document 1
end tell

set keywords to {{"$wordCount", wordCount}, {"$characterCount",
characterCount}, {"$name", documentName}}
set template to str_replace(keywords, template) of utilities
tell utilities to speak(template)

on import(filename)
set p to (path to me) as text
set oldDelimiters to text item delimiters of AppleScript
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ":"
set scpt to load script file (((text items 1 through ((length of (text
items of p)) - 1) of p) & filename) as text)
set text item delimiters of AppleScript to oldDelimiters
return scpt
end import

Looking for a Script to Give a Word Count in TextEdit

2015-03-27 Thread Jamie Pauls
Hello, all,

I understand that a script exists that will allow one to get a word count for a
document using TextEdit. If someone could kindly point me to this script, that
would be great. It doesn’t appear to be a part of the Talking Dashboard scripts
unless I’mm missing something.

Thanks.

Take care and have a great day.

Re: word count

2015-02-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello,

In Pages, show or hide word count is in the View menu. The count appears to the
left of the Formatter. It’s a menu button and the menu offers several choices
such as character or paragraphs.

In TextEdit, you need a script to do this.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: How do I get a word count in Pages?

2015-02-13 Thread Jamie Pauls
Hi, Anne,

I see that now. I think I may have gotten myself into an area of the program
that dealt with resizing my document. I’m not sure how that happened, but it
doesn’t seem to be a problem now. Thanks for the explanation.

Take care and have a great day.

Hello Jamie,

When you find the Word Count, you’ll see that it’s a button and clicking it
will give you other options such as Character count. You find the Word Count
button to the right of the document layout area.

Re: How do I get a word count in Pages?

2015-02-12 Thread Jamie Pauls
Hi, Anne,

I see the Show Word count option, but it is not a button. Pressing it simply
changes the menu item to Hide Word Count. I managed to see the word count a
couple times while looking around in the document layout area, but I can’t
reliably find the info. Sadly, TextEdit isn’t quite the word processor I need
and Pages seems a bit more frustrating to me that it’s worth. I’ll keep
plugging away, though. Thanks.

Take care and have a great day.

Hello Jamie,

To get the number of words, characters, paragraphs, etc in Pages, just go to
the View menu and down to Show Word Count. It appears as a menu button and
pressing VO-Space on it will give you the other options.

Cheers,

How do I get a word count in Pages?

2015-02-12 Thread Jamie Pauls
Hello, list members,

I need to get the word count on a document I am writing using the latest
version of Pages. An article I read said to use the inspector, but I’m still
not finding what I am looking for. Has anyone written a script for this? It
seems like it might be a good candidate, but I’m not the guy to do it, I don’t

Re: how to enhance the say word count script

2014-04-30 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Your first question is tricky. You might be able to get the "name of" "current
application" or "frontmost application" and put it in a variable, but I think
this is a little difficult.

The second question is easy, at least so far as it doesn't depend on the first
question. You could just change the "say WordCount" line to:
say "The word count is " & WordCount
If you wanted to include the application name, assuming you stored it in the
variable appName, you could do this:
say "The word count in " & appName & " is " & WordCount

Best,
Nic

how to enhance the say word count script

2014-04-30 Thread Scott Berry
A couple of questions here. Firstly, is there a way in Apple script to get the
name of the program where the word count is coming from and secondly I don't
like just the number. I'd like it to say "Your word count in program name is".
 How would I accomplish this?

Re: Getting Started with AppleScript (was: Shortcut to Speak Word Count in Any application | Here's How It's Done)

2014-04-27 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Phil, if you have some experience with programming or some scripting language
(e.g. I've done a bit with JavaScript) AppleScript will be really easy to pick
up once you read through some other people's scripts and get an idea of the
syntax, objects and commands. For more information on any particular object or
command, I find the best thing is to Google Apple's AppleScript language guide.
I've given you the link to their introduction, but it's often easiest to just
Google what it is you're trying to do and include the terms AppleScript
language guide. Then once you're on the page just do a VO-F search for the
particular term you're after.

Another great place to check out is Mac OSX Automation. They have a beginners
tutorial on AppleScript, as well as more advanced tutorials on using
AppleScript with iWork. For even more basic stuff, I also came across this
tutorial but I didn't read through it very carefully as by that stage I had
got a handle on the basics.

Shortcut to Speak Word Count in Any application | Here's How It's Done

2014-04-26 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi all,

Attached is a very simple little AppleScript to speak the word count of the
selected text in any application. It's great for TextEdit, Safari, or anywhere
you can enter text. It's even easier, in my opinion, than using the word count
feature of Pages.

Just:
download this script;
save it somewhere on your Mac (making note of where you save it);
Open VoiceOver Utility with VO-F8, and navigate to the commanders pane;
Choose Keyboard Commander, and add a new entry, choosing custom and run
AppleScript from the menu button.
Browse to the script you saved earlier, and choosing it.

Then you have a handy little keyboard shortcut to speak the word count of
selected text in any application.

Note: The script copies the selected text to the clipboard, but afterwards it
resets your clipboard to what it was originally so you won't lose what ever you
had on your clipboard.

If the link above doesn't work, the URL is:
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/58683113/Say%20Word%20Count%20of%20Selected%20Text.scpt

Best,

Hello Donna,

The word count in Pages appears to VO as an image. You can find it to the right
of where VO says "Layout area" but it isn't readable with VO and I haven't
found a way round this as I can't seem to highlight it to use the trick of
copying the highlighted text into TextEdit. In any case, that would take longer

Hi Donna,

Bring up the inspector with Command-Option I. Select the Info Tab which is the
third tab to the right. You will see the Word Count in there, VO-right arrow
will provide this information. HTH.

Thanks so much for the info on this. I was in the Info Tab, but I used the tab

Hi Les,

To get to word count in pages, do the following:
Open the inspector with command+option+I. You'll then vo+left arrow and see a
series of radio buttons. Choose the one labeled "document."
Then, you'll vo+right arrow to the info tab and select it. If you vo+Right
arrow through, you'll see something that says "words…" and the number of words
your whole document contains. If you want to know how many words a section of
your document has, just select it as normal, and do the steps outlined above.

Just a question, did you mean to write "the" twice in the second line (e.g.

Word Count in TextEdit

2013-02-25 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

For those of you who were looking to use a word count function in TextEdit.
Try this:

• Go to your Utilities folder. (cmd-shift-u when in the Finder)
• Open the Apple Script Editor app.
• Paste in the following text.

tell application "TextEdit"
set WordCount to the number of words in the the front document
display dialog "The wordcount is: " & WordCount

end tell

• Press cmd-comma to bring up the Preferences menu.
• Make sure the "Show Scripts menu in Menubar" is checked.
• close the Preferences window.
• Save the Apple Script as Word Count" to your Desktop.
• Open Macintosh HD.
• Open the Library folder.
• Open the Scripts folder.
• Open the TextEdit Scripts folder. If one doesn't already exist, create it.
Make sure to name it "TextEdit Scripts".
• Copy the Word Count AppleScript document you saved to the Desktop into this
folder.
• Close all the windows.
• Open a TextEdit document.
• Press VO-M twice to get to the extra menus.
• Locate the one called AppleScript menu and activate it.
• Go down to TextEdit and over to the "Word Count" script.
• Press cmd-tab to take you back to TextEdit and a dialog will be there
announcing the word count.

A few things to note:

• It will only count the words in the front most TextEdit document.
• If you don't like using the AppleScript menu, you can save this script as an
application to your Desktop. All you'll need to do then is have the TextEdit
document open, get to your Desktop and run the Word Count app. The same dialog
will appear over your TextEdit document.

Hope I didn't forget any steps.

HTH.

Re: word count

2013-02-22 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I did some googling and found the following link that gives a script to use.
The script appears to work but turning on the applescript menu as this article
suggests is a bit cumbersome because it means you have to go into the extras
menu and down to the script. So you might want to put it in the dock instead.

Re: word count

2013-02-22 Thread Israel Antonio
Lisette,

The only way I've found to get a word count for my Text Edit documents is by
writing and saving in Text Edit, but then when I wish to get a word count, I
open that same document in Pages, navigate the Inspector until I see where it
says Word Count and get my count there. I do not know if this helps or if it's
too cumbersome, but just an idea.

Re: word count for mac?

Well, there happens to be an app called "Word count". There's also an apple
script you could run to do it.

Have you tried Pages? It definitely has word count. You just go into your
inspector, and it shows up right in there.

word count for mac?

2013-02-04 Thread Rachel Feinberg
Hi All,

Would any one of you folks know where I could get either an application, or a
word processor that supports word count for mac? I'm not seeing the feature in
bean or TextEdit. The word service app, unless I'm overlooking something,
doesn't appear to have that feature either.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Rachel

Re: Word Count in TextEdit

2012-09-23 Thread Alex Hall
A google search reveals that you can't do this directly. The way I found was to
make a script, then enable scripts in the extras menus. When in Text Edit,
you'd go to the script menu in the extras and select your word count script
from there. Google can tell you how to do this exactly, but that's the idea.

Word Count in TextEdit

2012-09-23 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello everyone,

is it possible to get a word count in TextEdit, or is this only available in
Pages? I don't remember.

I am writing a document in TextEdit, and would really prefer not to need t copy
it over to Pages just to obtain a word count.

Thanks,

Harry
