MI broken? MS-Windows98?

1999-09-30 Thread Lenard Milich

Listers, following the discussion re. z-values, I downloaded and installed one
recommended solution, MFWorks. Abruptly, things began to get a little strange.
For one, I have lost the ability to access my addressbook in MS-Outlook - I'm
told I'm out of system resources, which I'm most certainly not. Worse from a
GIS point of view, MI5.0 has decided to go belly-up. I get 2 error messages:
(a) "unable to load library RICHED32.dll" (this is a file found in
\windows\system), followed by "the file MAPINFOW.MNU is missing or damaged;
MapInfo is unable to start". Well, it's not missing, nor does it seem to be
damaged, for a text editor brings it up error-free.

So far, the 3 things I've tried have made no difference: (1) uninstalling
MFWorks; (2) reloading the MI program files (not the entire setup, because I've
added various tools over time). Having had no success there, (3) I asked a
colleague to email me both files. Not only did I put the .dll file in Windows,
just for the hell of it I also copied it to the MI directory - all to no avail.

Anybody else had a similar problem following installing MFWorks? Is my
Windows98 now corrupted? Must I reinstall it (ye gods - and all the programs
too)? Do a full reinstall of MI? Any and all suggestions appreciated.

No, we won't.
At least not until you explain to the list the steps needed to obtain
the *same* result in ArcView.

Probably not, the opposite could have if version specific features were
used.

However, I wish to stress that missing tables, altered paths etc are
much more likely to cause trouble than your original concern.

You must understand that a workspace is no more than a script for
opening tables, and displaying them on the screen. Only some original
information is kept in the workspace, such as object created in the
cosmetic layer.

MI: 3Com pilot data capture software

Hello listers,

I'm looking for a mapping/data capture program that will run on a 3com Palm
pilot, and can import/export MIF files. I've searched the Mapinfo-L archive,
no luck. Anyone know of such a thing?

Cheers

Subject: MI Search & Replace

Dear Listers,
Does anyone know of a way of replacing string sequences within multiple
files in one go.
For example, I have about 50 workspace files which I need to move to
another project directory (along with the associated *.tab files etc.)
and so I need to edit the workspace files to point to the correct
location of the *.tab files. These files will all reside under the same
'parent' or project directory, so it's only the parent directory name
that needs changing within the workspace files.
Now, it's very simple to do this for a single file using a search and
replace within WordPad or NotePad for example, but as there are so many
of them I am after a faster solution. Someone told me I could acheive
this from within Windows Explorer, but I can't see where or how.

Please help!!

TIA

Ben.

The easiest way to get it is to download the files you need already in
MapInfo format from Directions Magazine. Go to http://www.directionsmag.com

MI BNA files in MapInfo

1999-09-30 Thread Maciej Tomczak

I was trying to import BNA files (Boundary Named shoreline files offered by
NOAA at http://seaserver.nos.noaa.gov/projects/shoreline/shoreline.html).
File: GL80_04 for the Lake St. Clair, Detroit River and Lake Erie.

Is there an easy way of importing it to MapInfo? I used GNA files instead,
converted them to MIF files with GENA2MI2 translator, and imported them to
MapInfo table (both GNA and MIF were Lat-Long coordinates, and NAD83 datum).
It worked (to a degree), but the shoreline was shifted by some 100 m from
where they are supposed to be. Could anyone offer an advise on what could
have gone wrong and how to remedy it? Thank's a million.

Re: MI MapBasic Shade statement

1999-09-30 Thread Antoine Gilbert

use the RUN COMMAND instruction..

exemple:

dim tmp as String
tmp = "Shade .. With ... bla bla bla "
tmp = tmp + "Values "
for i=0 to x
tmp = tmp +  + nameIndividualValue(i) +  + " Brush(" + param1(i)
+ "," + param2(i) + "," + param3(i) + "), "
Next
Run Command tmp

PS : is an insertion of the caracter -> " <- into the string...

for the string stories, i'm not not sure to understand all you asked..

RE: MI Fwd: AV: General--New guidance for using the ArcView list and an important survey question

I would like to see all replies made to the listserve and a summary.
Certainly more traffic and we all have enough email, but one useful reply
can save hours of work and aggravation so for me its worth it. Several times
material has been posted which is nothing I was particularly needing at the
moment, but it stuck and I used it later or went back and fixed something.

As far as humor goes - seems self limiting so far, and I can use any laugh I
can get.

Reading all the replies takes a lot of time, but it is SO
informative.
I personally like them better than summaries, for I sometimes find the
latter well ... too summarized.

All the information circulating on this list is very precious. I want the
gist of it all
(at least of what my partial knowledge allows me to understand).

MI Losing Z values

Friends,

I've translated MI tab files with XYZ coords into dxf format (eventually to be

One day I'll answer somone elses question on this list, its my GIS dream.

MI SUM Joining tables...

1999-09-30 Thread Peter_McPherson

Thank you to George M. Smith, Cindy Reid, and Michael Goldberg.

The combined suggestion was to use SQL Select dialogue. Place my two
tables that I want to join in the FROM section. In my Where category
set the two "key fields equal.

The result will be a query table. Should you want to keep this, Save
Copy As.

I think we would all agree that the ArcView join is much simpler.

Why can't we have the best of both worlds.

MI DOQs will not overlay

1999-09-30 Thread Phillips, Andrew

I've two DOQs. The first has a 1m resolution, the second was created by
resampling the first at a 2 m resolution. Both .tfw files are identical. I
registered them using Georeg.mbx. When opened, both appear automatically
within the same mapper, suggesting to me that they are, indeed, in the same
projection. However, they display with about a 90 m offset. Although I
seem to recall some discussion about weird behavior of multiple raster
images in MI, I have used a similar set of DOQs in another project with no
image shifting (although that was v5.0 rather than the v5.5 in use now). Is
this congential, or is there something that I can do?

Many thanks,

Drew

Reading all the replies takes a lot of time, but it is SO

I personally like them better than summaries, for I sometimes find the

All the information circulating on this list is very precious. I want the

"Intersects" works very well with polylines. You may create a buffer

into GonnaBeTransformed.
Also, polylines do so have centroids.

Re: MI Bravo

1999-09-30 Thread Christovam Barcellos

Hi up there,
I am sorry to say that in Brazil we use a lot of pirate softwares too. In
some cases these softwares are officially acquired after a "testing
period" and I think it is a good institutional or individual strategy. I
must remember you that in the Third World we don’t have the money and
information you have in USA or Europe. We receive a lot of advertisements about
one or other software and we must choose one based on the experience of friends
and the price.
Vietnam may be in the same or worst situation and this is not so strange. Do
you remember the war? I know USA have been involved in a lot of wars but this
one is "unforgettable". Also Cuba uses pirate softwares (Mapinfo is
the preferred GIS) and you can imagine why: They don’t have dollars and
commercial exchange with USA is forbidden (by USA).
Sorry about this non-GIS message .
P.S. My institution is relatively rich and we have a legal 4.0 version of
Mapinfo. We are looking for money to buy a more recent MI
version.

Craig,

I back you up 100% on the issue of SOFTWARE
PIRACY.

We are BDT, MapInfo re-sellers in Vietnam,
which is documented as being the most most pirated country in the world
(99%). There is absolutely no software purchasing ethic at all and the
government departments and various companies have the money..however, we
must be patient, educate as to the benefits, etc... in the hope that one
day, things may turn around.

However, it breaks our heart when the power
of the internet is used to promote software piracy from afar, and I
encourage all to help us guys "on the battlefront".

Here are some rules of etiquette from the ArcView-L that, I believe, would
help us very much here.

It doesn't really bother me that people on MapInfo-L reply publicly, but it
does when you get 5 people sending their same replies to a person and the
list, rather than first checking to see if there was an answer posted.

For me, I still say those who need a joke fix can join any number of humor

Make sure you do not have a thematic layer above or that the layer in

the map layer, called Reg3_cty map, I go into layer control, display, click
on
style override, change the color, click ok, then ok again at layer control
and
POOF! nothing changes. The cosmetic layer is editable, then I tried it with
the Reg3_cty editable, still zip-o. I moved Reg3_cty up in the layer
control,
zip-o. I've done this before so what could I be missing? I could just

MI MapBasic Shade statement

1999-09-30 Thread Susan Yu

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if anyone can help me with a Map Basic problem I am having.
I'm trying to automate a thematic map using the "Region, individual values,
black and white" template. This map is suppose to result from values
extracted from a selection performed prior.

The selection results with a list of names - and regions should be shaded
according to which name it falls in. I have managed to just get the names
and the regions it falls under. Not the shading part.

Then I have to use the "Shade" statement to create the thematic map:

Shade 3 With some_column
   Values
  "x" Brush ...
  "yy" Brush ...
  "zz" Brush ...
   etc

My problem is that the list of names can be 3 or 23! How do I code in Map
Basic to dynamically list the names and assign a different brush style under
the Shade statement?

Another attempt: I put the names in an array variable. I tried to list the
values by putting them all in one variable 'name_list', where names(n) is
the array variable containing the names:

counter = 2
name_list = Chr$(34) + names(1) + Chr$(34)
do while counter <= newsize
   name_list = name_list + "," + Chr$(34) + names(counter) +  Chr$(34)
   counter = counter + 1
loop

The problem with above is that 'name_list' is seen as just one long string
rather than a list of strings, despite that I have put in double quotation
marks (Chr$(34)).

I also tried putting under 'values' a variable list with: names(1),
names(2), names(3), ... to a certain number
but if the selection results in a list of names smaller than the listed
number of variables, then it doesn't work. It seem to fail when there is no
value for the rest of the listed variables.

Or is there a way to call an existing MapInfo function and pre-assign all
the values to automatically create the thematic map?

The answer seem like it can be right under my nose but I can't see it. Any
help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Susan

Sarah: I've come across a few cases where I had imported a file into MapInfo, and had
saved it without doing any edits, but when I came back to reopen and edit it, the file
seemed to be "read-only". Work-around seemed to be: save a copy of the file ("save
copy as" ) from MapInfo. Then, using the copy, everything seems to work OK.

Was and have been too busy to track down what was really going on. In my case, the
files were .DBFs and .XLSs.

MI Mulitple node selection to create new ployline/polygon

Can anyone help me?

I want to create a new ployline/polygon object from existing objects without having to
snap to each and every node (in some instances there are hundreds). Is there a way of
selecting the corners of the existing object and create new points along the new
object that match with the old object?

Does this sound confusing or what?

Re: MI Inserting nodes

Try my node_space.mbx - available at mapinfo-l shareware archive. This will
insert nodes into a polyline object at an interval approximating a user
specified distance. Its approximate because its optimized to produce even
node spacing. More about that in the docs that are with it. I use it to
get better results geocoding - whacky node spacing can lead to poor
geocoding. Let me know if you have questions.

MI Converting labels to text objects

1999-09-30 Thread Marcel Wolters

When I try to convert labels to text objects (using the mapbasic function
LabelInfo(window_id, layer_nr, LABEL_INFO_OBJECT)) I never get all of the
labels converted and sometimes my program crashes with the message that
there is no current label.
Also I have trouble with scaling rotated text objects.

At first I tried it by:
* setting the map to the right scale
* converting the objects on the screen layer by layer
*   panning the map
* converting the objects on the screen layer by layer
*   panning the map
*   etc.
As result I got about 10% of the labels spreaded throughout the map. Those
labels apeared however about 600 times in my text object table.
Aparently, when MapInfo tries to find a labels on the screen while there is
none, he finds a label outside the screen.

Then I let my program check for every label he found if its anchor point
was within the screen (if so: convert label; else do nothing). As the
result I got still about 10% of the labels converted, but this time only
once.
Has anyone got any idea why MapInfo didn't find all of the labels. (I'm
sure I let my program search the whole map.)

Then I used a different approach:
* I let my program scale the map to fit on the screen
* then I let my program convert the labels layer by layer
* then I let my program scale the objects to the right size by changing
MBR coordinates (MBR = Minimal Boudery Rectangle)
The result:
Lots of labels were converted, but not all of them. Every time I run my
program a different amount of labels is converted (depends on the mood of
my computer, I suppose). Sometimes I get hundreds of text objects,
sometimes thousands (there are about 4000 labels in my map).

The horizontal texts were scaled back correctly, but the rotated texts
remained much to big. The MBR's however were always scaled correctly. Does
anyone happen to know what goes wrong here?

There is still another problem:
Sometimes my program crashes at a LabelInfo() function with the message
that there is no current label. However my program should only execute the
LabelInfo() function if he has found (and selected) a label.
If this happens my program already has succesfully converted some labels
(sometimes tens, sometimes hundreds, sometimes thousands) and sometimes it
doesn't happen at all.
