I would like to know if the Cogoline a
MapBasic application utlity tool (MapInfo v4.1.2) which only have a feet and
miles measurement units(English system) can also be configured to meters (Metric

Scott,

This is out of my "scale" of expertise, but by any chance
could this sheet be cut on the IMW (International Map of
the World) format? If it is, it's not a Lambert but a
Lallemond Polyconic - infinite number of standard

The math is in Snyder's USGS Bible.

RE: MI Pro Geometry Manager

1999-12-23 Thread Martin Higham

Hi,

>From my tests so far with fairly large datasets it works very well and VERY
quickly. We compile geological maps by digitizing, cleaning, polygonizing
and attributing. Pro Geometry Manager builds a 7000 polygon geological map
from the linework in a couple of minutes on my PII-266 with 128MB RAM. The
ability to clean spikes and dangles, batch process, combine linework from
multiple tables and the very verbose log files are also great features.

It is relatively high cost, but it offers big value if you're cleaning and
building large polygon datasets.

MI Dot Density custom symbols

1999-12-23 Thread W. Kent Treichel

Merry Christmas!
I am trying to make a map. I have about 8000 addresses that I have
geocoded in St. Paul, MN. Most of them are clustered in certain parts
of the city. My boss wants one, and only one, map that shows where the
clients live what type of program they are involved in and where the
programs are located in the city. There are approximately 70 programs.
I tried individual values but the map is not legible. Even if I
collapse the programs down to 10 with ten corresponding symbols that are
legible, the addresses are so close together in certain areas that the
symbols would be illegible. (If I had a large format plotter, this
might not be a problem, but the best I can do is 11x17.) I liked the
look of the dot density maps. It provided a good graphical shot of what
part of the city our clients come from. Now the question. How can I
combine the best of individual value with the dispersed representation
of dot density? And as long as I'm asking for the moon, how can I
ensure that they don't overlap with each other?
The final product would look something like this; a map of the city with
planning districts (17), within each planning district a certain number
of circles, squares, stars etc, representing the corresponding number of
clients in a particular program.
Negative responses appreciated as well, so I can start trying to figure
out a different strategy.
Respectfully submitted,
Kent

Re: MI SDTS Translation

1999-12-23 Thread Bill Thoen

I'm not sure that TVP is the one that people need, but if the
1:24,000 scale SDTS DLG files at the EROS data center are that
format, then yes, that's it. The DEMs seem to be handled fine by
Northwood Geoscience's Vertical Mapper import function, so we
don't need that one right away.

Output to MID/MIF is the sanctioned transfer format. There are
one or two people online here who have learned how to read and
write MapInfo native format files, but they can contact you
privately if they think it's worthwhile. The official doco for
the MID/MIF format (supplied by MapInfo) is at
http://www.directionsmag.com/mapinfo-l/mif/Table_of_Contents.htm.
I can help you with anything not fully explained there (like the
Coordsys clause, and I can supply you with an ASCII tab-delimited
file of all MapInfo-supported projections.)

Let's talk about the data model. Knowing little of SDTS, but a
lot about DLG, I know for example, that some lines that represent
roads can have multiple names or highway numbers. Canyon Blvd
here in Boulder is called "Canyon Blvd" and "St Hwy 119" and "St
Hwy 7" (there's only one canyon for all these to squeeze through
heading up into the mountains.) So here we would have one line
for the road and at least 3 attributes for some sections. MapInfo
handles these as a "View" table. The StreetInfo product is set up
like this, but it's not officially documented. I did write this
up once upon a time, and you can get it (streets.zip) from
http://www.directionsmag.com/tools/Default.asp?a=file&id=169

There are also cases where a line can be part of a shoreline as
well as part of the lake's enclosing polygon boundary, and you
might want them both. Also in hydrology layers there are points
associated with stream sources and fork junctions. It would be
great to have the ability to export, points lines and polygons
into separate layers as needed, even if these features are
coincident and can be interpreted differently depending on what
type of graphic entity they are.

I (with some help from people here) could certainly supply a free
MapBasic and Mbx to load, combine and style MID/MIF entities into
MapInfo tables if that would simplify the SDTS MID/MIF output.
Even better if you could build this as a DLL, and then we could
link it to an MBX and produce native TAB files on the fly.

Just some thoughts...

Alex,

Here's the explanation for your question in as short a treatise as I can make
it:

A "Datum" is a system of Latitude and Longitude that is traditionally
established by individual countries. In Israel, the traditional system is the
Palestine Datum of 1928.

After WWII, the U.S. Army Map Service (AMS) decided that it was going to "unify"
all of the individual Datums that had connections with each other from classical
surveying observations. That new "Datum" was going to be started in 1950 in
Europe. In particular, France was the first country to be "converted" to the
European Datum 1950 (EU50). Each country in Western Europe was connected to
EU50 through their connections to France, then Scandanavia was connected in the
Northern European Block, and Institue Geographique National (IGN) in France was
contracted to do the connection computations in Northwest Africa (through AMS
computations in Spain and Portugal). After the Danube region of Europe was
adjusted and connected with Western Europe, the chains of triangulation into
Greece and Turkey were computed on EU50, and then the Palestine Datum was
recomputed onto EU50 in the process of bringing EU50 to Egypt and connection
with EU50 in Algeria as computed by the French IGN.

These computations were done with the use of the Universal Transverse Mercator
(UTM) Grid which is composed of 60 zones, each 6 degrees wide in longitude. UTM
is a Grid, and is independant of ellipsoids and Datums. UTM is based on the
Transverse Mercator projection, and the mathematical formulae are specifically
called the Gauss-Kruger model.

For further information on this stuff, I publish a monthly column on the topic
of "Grids and Datums" (each month is the history of all systems, new and old,
existing in a particular country). I publish in "Photogrammetric Engineering
and Remote Sensing," the official journal of the American Society for
Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing.

You can download some of my past "Grids and Datums" columns from:

http://www.asprs.org/resources.html

The files are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format, and there is a link at that page
where you can download a free copy of Acrobat to read and print each copyrighted
article.

There's ten different countries on the list at the moment, two discuss some of
the history I just alluded to above. See specifically my column from June, 1998
on the Kingdom of Morrocco, and my column from October, 1998 on the Kingdom of
Belgium. (There's lots of other places, but that's what's available on EU50
stuff. I did one a few months ago on the Kingdom of Norway, but the Society
does not have that one available as a "freebie."

It ain't a mystery; it's just remarkably obscure stuff.

One of the world's foremost authorities on Map Projections is Prof. Ron K. Adler
who teaches at several campuses (campii?), including in Tel Aviv.

Happy Holidays to you too!

RE: MI Super Workspace - Try Workspace Manager

1999-12-23 Thread Sinam Al-Khafaji

I work for Empower Geographics, a MapInfo VAR outside Chicago.
We put together a small program called Workspace Manager.
You can download it free off our website; empowergeo.com.

It has some nuances, but we are always open to suggestions, revisions,
upgrades, etc.

Here the basics from the readme.txt. Good luck & Happy Holidays.

 Features

Workspace Manager is designed to facilitate easy management and distribution
of a standard MapInfo Professional(r) Workspace file (.WOR extension).
Version 1.0 of Workspace Manager has been tested with MapInfo Professional
v4.5 and v5.0. (and 5.5 - Sinam)

a) Resolves missing/relocated .TAB files.
You can let Workspace Manager search drives for you automatically, or you
can specify a particular file replacement.

b) Workspace Packages (.WORP) can be built to send a Workspace to another
user via disk, email or other electronic transport mechanism.
The Workspace Package can include any or all of the tables that are used in
the Workspace (within the Limitations listed in IIa). The Packaged files
are compressed to reduce disk space and transmission time requirements.

c) The recipient of a Workspace Package would use Workspace Manager to save
the enclosed Workspace and Tables to disk, and will assist in the location
of any tables not included in the distribution.

d) Workspace Manager will default to extract only newer Tables from the
Package thus preserving your local copies as appropriate. The user can
easily override this default on a Table by Table basis.

e) There is no physical restriction on the number of Tables that can be
included in a Package or on their sizes (within available disk space
requirements for building or extracting them).

graphics packages for MI maps?

1999-12-23 Thread Dan_Page

I have a question about graphic packages. So far we have been able to do all of
our printing directly from MapInfo to our HP Deskjet 1120c. However we are also
becoming interested in producing quality output maps and images for printing on
larger then 11x17 format. After downloading the AdobePS 5.1 postscript printer
driver I am now able to write a file from MI to Acrobat PDF writer and produce a
PDF file which can be viewed in Acrobat Reader. My question is what graphics
package is most compatible to use for editing PDF files for quality output?
I've read on the list people mentioning Abobe Illustrator, what about Abobe
Photoshop? Which would be more suitable and more convenient for producing
publishable maps or images? We also might be needing to print out raster photo
images and right now we are getting by with Corel PhotoPaint 6.0 but need to
upgrade. Is it necessary to have both Abobe Illustrator and another raster
graphics package such as Abobe Photoshop or Corel PhotoPaint or will Abobe
Illustrator be sufficient for editing pdf files and printing photo raster images
in TIF format? I'm I also going to need MapPublisher with Abobe Illustrator for
the MI maps or can I get by with just saving my MI maps into PDF files? As you
can see I'm a newbie when it comes to graphic packages so I'm not sure what the
differences are between Illustrator and Photoshop, any suggestions would be
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

MI Mysterious coordinate system

Season's Greetings, List.

Here in Israel the use of WGS 84, Zone 36 Northern Hemisphere,
is pretty common. Digitized maps (from paper maps) show a high

It costs way more than it should (close to a thousand) but is quiet good,
once you have a few quirks figured out (for example, "promote topology"
actually keeps it the same and "maintain topology" changes lines to surfaces,
etc.). Can't compare it to Arcview, since I have no experience on that.

MI SDTS Translation

1999-12-23 Thread Frank Warmerdam

Folks,

In response to recent discussions about the need for SDTS to MIF (or TAB)
translation, I have decided to write a free sdts2mif translator. I am not
normally a Mapinfo user, and so have a limited knowledge of Mapinfo, mostly
garnered in the past from work on mif and TAB translators. As such I am
interested on feedback indicating how to write optimally useful files for
use in Mapinfo. Bill Thoen has kindly offered to help me a bit in this
regard.

I have read back through a couple dozen SDTS messages in the Mapinfo-L
archive, and this is what I understand:

o Vertical Mapper (as of a very recent version) includes SDTS DEM import,
so there isn't really much need for me to support DEMs. Based on this
I will concentrate on SDTS TVP (Topological Vector Profile) import. If
DEMs are an issue, I can easily provide an SDTS DEM to GeoTIFF translator.

o MID/MIF is equally useable in Mapinfo as TAB/DAT files, so it is sufficient
   to write MID/MIF.

o Mapinfo is primarily (only?) available for Windows so it is sufficient to
produce Windows .exe files for a conversion utility. (Note other platforms
can be supported if desired. I normally write platform agnostic text
   mode programs).

One question I have relates to the SDTS attribute data model. SDTS vector
features (lines, polygons, etc) can have links to zero or more attribute
records. These records can be in one or more tables. What I have done in
the past when writing an SDTS2Shape translator was scan the whole vector layer
for attribute references, and then establish an attribute schema which is the
merged form of all tables references from the layer. I will do the same for
Mapinfo output.

However, some vector features have links to more than one records in the same
table. For instance, some elevation contour datasets have more than one
elevation record associated with contours. This seems to occur when several
contour have been collapsed into one in very dense areas. The result is that
one feature should be able to have several ELEVATION values associated with it.
For now I am going to just assign one of the elevation values at random, but
does anyone have an opinion on a better way of handling this? Is it a major
issue?

Another question I have is about what sort of graphical elements I should
be using in the MIF file. Is it important that this be configurable on the
translator command line?

Finally, a few weeks ago someone asked if the FME support for SDTS was
read/write or not. FME only reads SDTS datasets at this time, but the
results can be written to any supported writable format, including MIF and TAB.
As usual, a variety of manipulation can be applied during translation. FME
is a good value for anyone needing to do an assortment of data translation.
It isn't my intention to displace FME purchases, and in fact Safe Software
funded the development of my underlying OpenSource SDTS library.

Best regards,

Re: MI Create Text in a Layout

1999-12-23 Thread PEM

Hi Scott,

If you are using MapBasic 4.5 or a later version there is a new function,
that does the trick.

Syntax:
CreateText( window_id , x , y , text , angle , anchor , offset )

This function creates text from a centerpoint and you can then set
different values to control
the placement of the textobject, almost like the Labelsetting.

That is you just need the calculate the center between your two points and
of you go.

Merry Christmas to you all.

Best wishes,

Peter

MI Please help with labeling features

1999-12-23 Thread Philip Place

Hi,

I'm sorry if I'm not writing to the right place but I discovered a link to
this site on MapInfo's web site. Please ignore this mail if I'm in error. I
was hoping that you may be able to help me with a problem I'm having with
MapInfo. I've searched MapInfo's KB for a solution to no avail. I'm
developing a small application with Visual Basic and MapX (3.x) in which I
have to add a layer with some labelled features on it. I've managed to add
the (temporary) layer and the features to it but I cant figure out how to
label the features. The source of my data is an access database table with
fields; ID, Latitude, Longitude, and FeatureDescription. I first added the
layer using the CreateLayer method and added the features by looping through
the following procedure as many times as there was records in the table

Private Sub AddPoint(dblLatitude As Double, dblLongitude As Double,
lyrCurrentLayer As MapXLib.Layer)

Dim fNewSymbol As New MapXLib.Feature
Dim fMapSymbol As MapXLib.Feature

fNewSymbol.Attach Map1
fNewSymbol.Type = miFeatureTypeSymbol

fNewSymbol.Style = Map1.DefaultStyle
fNewSymbol.Point.Set dblLongitude, dblLatitude
Set fMapSymbol = lyrCurrentLayer.AddFeature(fNewSymbol)

End Sub

However, I'm at a loss as how to label these features with its Description
(4 letter abbv.). If you can help in anyway or know of anybody that would be
able to, it would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Philip Place

MI Interface with Business Objects

1999-12-23 Thread Alex Eshed

Greetings, List.

Season's greeting to you all.

Does anyone know of an interface between MapInfo and Business
Objects?

(I checked the Archives. There was one identical, unanswered
query from January 99. Maybe something has changed since then?)

TIA to all responders.
