MI Workspace Problem
Dear Lister's Has anybody had problems saving workspaces on a Windows 95 OS. Our 4 person GIS team currently uses NT on 3 of the 4 machines in our office. However, on our 95 OS we cannot save workspaces. When the workspace is oppened in wordpad for correction all the text is replaced with little sqaures. We have scanned for viruses and gotten together with our IT department because it happens to all the workspaces that the machine with 95 saves to our network drives. The machine also corrupts workspaces saved locally to it's hard drive, but it doesn't happen as often and the workspace is usually able to be saved in wordpad. The problem started about 6 weeks ago. Any comments on how to deal with this would be greatly appreciated. __ Do You Yahoo!? Send instant messages get email alerts with Yahoo! Re: MI Workspace Problem
The first thought that came to my mind was that your workspace file may be getting saved as a word processing doc file and not a text file. The fact you are using wordpad makes me think this. Whereas note pad only saves in text format, wordpad has to be told to save it as a text file. Just my thoughts Jack Alex Ross [EMAIL PROTECTED] 05/23/00 10:49AM Dear Lister's Has anybody had problems saving workspaces on a Windows 95 OS. Re: MI Workspace Prob...
Andre, I do not thinks that this is a problem with the virus, not affecting the workspace anyway. If you can open your workspace in a text editor of some variety, goto the line represented by the number in the error message (36 in this case). It sounds like it is trying to do something with one of your tables, using a column called ID. Dependant on what it is doing, either delete or modify this line and try running the workspace again. Re: MI Workspace Prob...
Andre that error message brings back (not so) fond memories - have you changed any of the table structures? if you have that could be the problem, the "36" in the error message is the line number in the workspace file, have a look at it in a text editor and see what the variable name is, does it correspond to a field name in the table? if not there's your problem, you can edit the workspace (insert the valid field name) in the text editor and all should be well, I once had to do something similar for lots of workspaces I know very little about Lovebug etc. but I had the same problem a year or so or go so I suspect it's not related. hope this helps cheers Mick - Original Message - From: Lederer, Andre [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 18, 2000 4:09 PM Subject: MI Workspace Prob... Re: MI Workspace problem
Hi Karen I had the same happening a few weeks ago! The only change in my system prior and after the message appearing is that I changed my local (lpt1) inkjet printer to another brand and type in the meantime and deleated the old printer driver from the system. All the workspaces last openen with a still existing network printer worked fine, the ones last opened with the previous local printer gave the message ."126: Printer driver file not found" I had to open all the *.WOR files and deleted the reference to the printer in the last part of that file to make them work again. Max Schelbach Karen wrote: Hi, I'm having problems opening some workspaces I made about a month ago. The workspace starts to open up, then I get an error message giving the workspace file path name and "126: Printer driver file not found". When I click Okay (the only option given to get out of the error message) another dialog box appears "Workspace could not be opened". So, I can't use the workspace at all. This is only happening with some workspaces and not others. MI workspace open and print problems
Listers, Our office currently has 4 versions of MapInfo ranging from 4.1-5.5. We are having trouble swapping workspaces within the department. I was under the impression that if you open the workspace in Word as a text document you can change the version of MapInfo it was saved as. The problem lies in reading back, for example if someone saves the wksp in 5.5 any earlier version can't read it. I thought we could work around it in word as described above. Any software implemented in this way is likely to cause nothing but trouble. Seems as if someone is trying to save a buck but that buck is lost many times over in time wasted as you run into trouble. But anyway - a couple of mementos: 1: Do NOT use Word or ANY word processing software to edit workspace files. They are pure ASCII and may easily be completely ruined by inadvertently added formatting codes. Use notepad or a similar tool. 2: MI writes version info into the workspace as needed. I.e. if a workspace contains commands only valid in 5.5, it will say so. (The same goes for tables as a matter of fact). Thus, by changing the version info, earlier MI versions may well be fooled to read the workspace but will then fail in an unpredictable way upon encountering the unknown commands. So to be sure, these commands must be found and removed which may alter the appearance of the workspace altogether. MI Workspace Editing : DANGER DANGER
Many have recently responded to problems with opening workspaces due to deleted or path changed files. Several have advised to simply delete the reference to file in the Open Table " " section and the Map from Table section. This is not good advice. The problem comes in when you delete the file from the Map From section. After the Map From section the front window properties are set, then the Set Map section defines parameters for the Layers. THE ORDER OF LAYERS IS THE SAME AS THE ORDER OF THE MAP FROM SECTION. IF YOU DELETE THE REFERNCE TO THE MISSING TABLE IN MAP FROM SECTION YOU SCREW UP THE OREDER OF LAYERS AND EVERY LAYER AFTER THE DELTED TABLE WILL USE THE PROPERTIES OF THE NEXT LAYER. What do I suggest you ask? Replace the problem table with a known table that will open in both the Open Table section and the Map From section. Open your workspace. Close the replacement table. Save the workspace. It will now open without the deleted table and you can start to rebuild the deleted table. I'm not sure if you can recover the data from the recycle bin, but I would try. Remember that you are looking for a set of files, 4 or 5 (a file for the tables Indexed fields), being MyTable.TAB, MyTable.DAT, MyTable.ID, MyTable.IND and MyTable.MAP By the way, the order of tables in the Open Table section sets the order of the list of tables you see when you go to layer control and select Layers Add William Woodruff Zoning Administrator Charter Township of Union, T14 N R4W, Isabella County, Michigan -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: MI WOrkspace
So that you know, this doesn't work well in practice. I often have workspaces with 100 or more tables in a workspace, and I am sure I am not alone. It is not uncommon for someone to come back 2-3 years later and want to use that map as a base. You have to allocate hours to resurrecting or remaking the map. Computers die. Networks get rearranged. It's a drag. This happens all the time. I think a good solution would be a "delete table from workspace" option. If a table is missing, you have to dink with the workspace forever, changing layer references to try to get it to open. It would be nice to have something that does it automatically. What is even more annoying is that if a column is referenced for labeling, then gets changed, the workspace won't open. And it won't even tell you the table name! Then you have to look at the map statement and count over, figure out what table it's complaining about, make a dummy column that takes up drive space, and try again. And 90% of the time you weren't even labeling that field! -- To unsubscribe from this list, send e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and put "unsubscribe MAPINFO-L" in the message body, or contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: MI Workspace Editing : DANGER DANGER
Hi All! Will Woodruff wrote as a tip for saving wrecked workspaces: What do I suggest you ask? Replace the problem table with a known table that will open in both the Open Table section and the Map From section. Open your workspace. Close the replacement table. Save the workspace. Well, at first this seems as a splendid idea. However, the replacing table cannot be any dummy table. Consider the line Layer 5 Display Graphic Zoom (0, 1500) Units "mi" Label Line Arrow Position Above Font ("Arial",0,9,0) Pen (1,2,0) With Highway Now, if Layer 5 does not contain the column name Highway - the workspace will fail at this point. In fact, it is almost impossible to recognize all references to a missing table in the workspace file. But if the case is a mislaid table, you can give MapInfo a hand in searching: Under Options Preferences Directories you can add up to 4 search paths. If you add the 4 most likely drives or trees, MapInfo will traverse each one in turn until a Table with the wanted name is found. Be prepared that this can take a while. Beware that MapInfo opens the first Table found a name that satisfies the search condition. So if multiple tables exist with the same name (no good practice but common nevertheless) another table than the original may well be opened with possibly fatal results. The obvious choice in the workspace opener should of course be an option to skip and turn off all following references to a missing Table. RE: MI Workspace Editing : DANGER DANGER
For the future, I would suggest our Workspace Manager. Downloadable from our website for a free time renewable version. It can create a .worp file. This in essence is a compressed workspace, that when reopened, can reassign the data files to new directories. You could also archive old workspaces (perhaps those older than 1 year) as a .worp file, then uncompress then in whatever location required. It does require space, as each file making up the workspace is copied and compressed. You can also use Workspace Manager to send whole workspaces to clients, either via e-mail like a .zip or transferring the whole workspace to another storage medium. We often burn to CD or zip drive for easy transfer. It can also parcel the worp file into e-mail bundles for size limit e-mail system. www.empoergeo.com http://www.empowergeo.com/authorized/workspace.htm Here the basics from the readme.txt. Features Workspace Manager is designed to facilitate easy management and distribution of a standard MapInfo Professional(r) Workspace file (.WOR extension). Version 1.0 of Workspace Manager has been tested with MapInfo Professional v4.5 and v5.0. (and 5.5 - Sinam) a) Resolves missing/relocated .TAB files. You can let Workspace Manager search drives for you automatically, or you can specify a particular file replacement. b) Workspace Packages (.WORP) can be built to send a Workspace to another user via disk, email or other electronic transport mechanism. The Workspace Package can include any or all of the tables that are used in the Workspace (within the Limitations listed in IIa). The Packaged files are compressed to reduce disk space and transmission time requirements. c) The recipient of a Workspace Package would use Workspace Manager to save the enclosed Workspace and Tables to disk, and will assist in the location of any tables not included in the distribution. d) Workspace Manager will default to extract only newer Tables from the Package thus preserving your local copies as appropriate. The user can easily override this default on a Table by Table basis. e) There is no physical restriction on the number of Tables that can be included in a Package or on their sizes (within available disk space requirements for building or extracting them). -Original Message- From: Mats Elfström [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, February 03, 2000 4:32 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Mapinfo List Subject: Re: MI Workspace Editing : DANGER DANGER Hi All! RE: MI workspace
Yes, I found this possibility. I just don't want to fix the workspace for missing layers "by hand" or forceps if I have hundreds of layers to replace. Besides, I was hopping for something new on this matter. Like an "workspace application interface" that would load an workspace template and would update the final one much more easily. We should develop one though. I also was pushing for MI Corp to address this question with a better interface design. I will take a look on the link you suggested. Thanks for you participation. If it is present, when trying to open a table but not finding it MI will ask the user to relocate it. Of course if the table has been deleted, one must go back to the editing of the wor file. Why Dyan did not encountered that possibility? I thought that MI was automatically adding it to its workspaces. MI Workspace
My nightmare has occurred... I accidentally deleted a table which was used in several of my fairly complicated workspaces yesterday and when I try to open them today, not only can they not find that one but they seem to have lost all the others too. When I go through the process of finding each table individually it gets so far and then tells me that it can't open one of my other tables which has never moved and I know is ok...Is there anyway of getting some tables disregarded within a workspace so that it will boot up as normal? Re: MI Workspace
David Join the club! I had a similar tale of woe from a student who had done the same thing. Open the .wor file in Notepad (after saving a copy in a different folder for safety!) and delete the lines referring to the lost tables. (The sections start: Open table "C:\mystuff... etc). Save the file and it should open OK with the remaining tables. You can then open the tables which still exist (but wouldn't open) and save the workspace again - preferably under a new filename just in case it falls over again! regards Nigel On Tue, 1 Feb 2000 12:56:40 - David Eagle [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My nightmare has occurred... MI Workspace
Hi Users Is there any reason why MI (unlike ArcView) does not complete the open workspace command if there is one single map missing? I am running a program that creates multiples workspaces based on a workspace template and a lot of interactions are needed. However not all the maps have all the leyers (13 layers) so if the workspace for the complete set is working it will crash for those with one single map missing. Is there a way to say CONTINUE or IGNORE? Thanks for all. Dyan C. I'd like to convert a lot of workspaces to geosets and using some kind of batch in MapBasic would speed up this proces significantly. I tried it, but my attempts have failed so far. MI Workspace Questions
Dear Mapinfo Listers: (1) Has anyone opened a workspace under Map Basic control? That is, without using the common dialog. (2) Also for thematic mapping. Has anyone by-passed The 3 step dialog sequence that Mapinfo imposes? We are working with Mapinfo Pro 5.0 (desktop) and Access '97 and are trying to open a "specific" workspace in Mapinfo (through Access), and subsequently map it thematically. Any help would be greatly appreciated. MI Workspace descriptions
Is there any way that I can append comments and descriptions to my workspaces so that I / other users can see what they are all about? RE: MI Workspace descriptions
Fraser- I'm not sure how ER mapper appends comments, but at the very least if you wanted to append comments to your MI workspace you could open up the .WOR file in a text editor and use the apostrophe character ('), which is used in MapBasic to signify the beginning of a comment. Then you can comment to your hearts content. Just be sure you add the comments AFTER the initial workspace information that is preceded by exclamation marks (!) eg. !Workspace !Version 550 !Charset WindowsLatin1 'this is a comment 'you can type all you want to describe your workspace here Open Table "C:\Mapping\Database\AllSites" As AllSites etc.etc. etc. -Original Message- From: Fraser Gardiner [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 20, 1999 3:20 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: MI Workspace descriptions Is there any way that I can append comments and descriptions to my workspaces so that I / other users can see what they are all about? MI Workspace Control
Peter, Thanks for sending this to me - I'll pass this onto the group (no I'm not a paid advocate!) because its salient to the discussion regarding the difficulty with workspaces. The company (below) has developed a very slick set of tools (at least from what I can tell on their web page), and I can't imagine this kind of market evolving if there weren't widespread user frustration with workspaces... ok guys how about a business partnership with MI so that we can all have these tools in release 6.0 ! :-) Chris -- Forwarded by Chris Skelly/MOH on 07/26/99 02:00 PM --- "Doyle, Peter W" [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 07/26/99 01:35:32 PM To: Chris Skelly/MOH@MOH cc: Subject: Workspace Control Chris, This may be of help to you.
