RE: MI-L RE: Ang. MI-L MapInfo ProViewer 7.8 error

2004-12-10 Thread SCISOFT
I've had no problems whatsoever.

I have WinZip 9.0SR1 installed, and can open the EXE and view its contents
without problem; and, of course, I can install the Proviewer78.exe by
double-clicking.

Maybe your download was damaged? The filesize I have is 38,907,904 bytes

I am running Windows 2000 here and had no problem with the process.

The exe file is a self extracting zip archive. Perhaps it has been created
with older/newer bin components that your OS does not like.
Try unzipping it manually, I tested both WinZip and WinRar and both could
extract the setup and msi files to a directory.
Then install it using setup.exe

MI-L MapInfo ProViewer 7.8 error

Hi Listers,

Has anyone else had this problem??

Got an update email from MapInfo to download the new ProViewer v7.8.
Downloaded it OK. Tried to extract...ERROR message
"C:\...\ProViewer78.exe
is not a valid Win32 application".

Now I am running WinXP SP2, and the system requirements are for XP SP1a.
Think this might be the problem. If so, will v7.0 work with WORs and TABs
made in MapInfo v7.8? Any of the MapInfo development team have any
answers?
Anyone else?

RE: MI-L Defining a custom field in an SQL Select Query - Making expressions with Functions

2004-12-10 Thread Peter Horsbøll Møller
Hi,

I think you have found one of the things that the SQL syntax doesn't allow.
There is a few combinations that MapInfo doesn't allow. To get around them you
can most do your SQL in 2 steps in stead of just one:

1.
Select Sum(population) "SUM_POP", Sum(Area) "SUM_AREA"
From ...
Into SQL_PART1

2.
Select SUM_POP/SUM_AREA "Density"
From SQL_PART1
...

expressions with Functions

Hi list,

I'm doing some population density calculations using the SQL Select tool. I
have population data and area data for several hundred regions in a table. In
order to get the aggregate density for the total area, I'm summing these two
fields in a query and manually dividing total population by total area. My
issue is that MapInfo allows me to define two separate columns using the sum(*)
function, but when I try to define a single density field, which looks
something like this:

Sum(population)/Sum(Area) "Density"

It doesn't work. "Found[/] while searching for [A string constant]" is the
error I get. Interestingly, the following custom fields do work:

Population/Area - returns the density of each region in the table

Sum(Population/Area) - returns the sum of all regions' density, which is
meaningless.

I don't want a MapBasic solution, I would just like someone to confirm that
what I'm trying to do is not allowed, or let me know if there is a way. This
problem isn't keeping me from doing my work, I'm just surprised that this
functionality isn't available and want to test my findings with the list.

RE: MI-L Thematic Bubble Map Question

2004-12-10 Thread Wallace, Steve
I've heard this comment several times this year, and can partially
understand why folks come to this conclusion. The LEGEND of the thematic map
show three REPRESENTATIVE symbols, but the actual symbol sizes are virtually
infinite. You might want to change what point size symbol is used at what
value to help you see this clearly.

A good Friday to everyone!

My conundrum is as follows:

I wish to use a bubble map to display a relationship in MapInfo 7.0. The
problem is that there only seems to be 3 grades of bubbles I can use. (If
you have negative values you can also use bubbles of another color to
represent this). However for the finer detail that I am trying to get
across three grades is not sufficient. Is there a way to pick the number of
bubble sizes that I am missing?

Thanks for any advice on this. I'm stumped.

Hi Josh,

Under "Create Thematic Map" there is an option under Ranges- "Point
Ranges-Varying Size". You can select the number of ranges you want; the
point size, colour scheme etc. You can also autospread colour and size
so that you can display variables with both graduated points and
graduated colours.

I assume that this is what you mean by "grades of bubbles"

MI-L Ang. MI-L Thematic Bubble Map Question

2004-12-10 Thread Mats Elfström
Hi Josh!

A common misconception, perhaps due to an unclear GUI of graduated symbols
(bubble map?).

The 'three grades' are only samples, and intermediate bubble sizes will be
created as needed.
You only get to select the symbol size for one value and have to play
around with that to match your data set.
Suggestion: Try 'advanced' and log(arithmic) if your range is very wide.

Now I am running WinXP SP2, and the system requirements are for XP SP1a.
Think this might be the problem. If so, will v7.0 work with WORs and TABs
made in MapInfo v7.8? Any of the MapInfo development team have any
answers?
Anyone else?

MI-L Routine to convert to/from OGC format

2004-12-10 Thread Soporte
Hi !

Any one have a routing in MapBasic or Visual Basic to convert a Mapinfo table
into an OGC format ? (Write a .txt file with the OGC definition of each object)

The same for reading an OGC text file and create the corresponding Mapinfo
table.

Thanks
Alex

MI-L MapInfo ProViewer 7.8 error

2004-12-10 Thread Hughes, Colleen / Don Mitchell
Hi Listers,

Has anyone else had this problem??

Got an update email from MapInfo to download the new ProViewer v7.8.
Downloaded it OK. Tried to extract...ERROR message "C:\...\ProViewer78.exe
is not a valid Win32 application".

Now I am running WinXP SP2, and the system requirements are for XP SP1a.
Think this might be the problem. If so, will v7.0 work with WORs and TABs
made in MapInfo v7.8? Any of the MapInfo development team have any answers?
Anyone else?

RE: MI-L Translating Shape files, which files are necessary

2004-12-10 Thread Cinda Graubard
mia culpa, excuse my sleepy transgression! a bit too early here (before
6am) to be right on top of important things like esri file types!

of course you are correct, the workspace equivalent is the apr ("arcview
project") file in ArcView 3x. which, of course, does not translate into a
MapInfo workspace in any way other than brute force (that I have found
anyway.) another heads up, any colors applied in arcview via an avl
("arcview legend") file will have to be recreated in MapInfo as well
(either manually or i believe there is at least one tool out there that
attempts it automatically.)

the .shp file translation will use the required additional files and create
the .tab, .map, .dat etc. note, however, that the .prj file is NOT a
projection file, but a "project" file which is equivalent (more or less) to
a MapInfo workspace. you will have to know the original projection and set
it in UT.

Hello Cinda,

Actually ESRI PRJ's are projection files. The equivalent of a MapInfo
