RE: [MI-L] SUM: projection woes for madagascar.

2006-03-27 Thread Lawley, Russell S
Title: projection woes for madagascar.

Many thanks to Sam Knight and Spencer Simpson for their
replies..

There is'nt a definitive sum to thisposting,
but it raises an issue i'd thought i'd share with other listers (esp. if
you are working in madagascar)

Basically the projection information is as posted on
many internet docs:

projection: oblique Mercator (hotine)
datum: Tananarive_1925 spheroid: international 1924
Origin long: 46.43722917
Origin Latt: -18.9
Azimuth: 18.9 scale
factor: 0.9995 false
east: 40 false
north: 80 units: m.
which
would suggest a PRJ file entry of:
"Laborde CS", 7, 147,
7,46.43722917,
-18.9, 18.9, 0.9995, 40, 80
However..this doesnt work for me, the false easting and northing needed
to be 'adjusted' for my data to work (thanks Spencer). I therefore assumed that
my data 'supplier' had fudged the coordinates in the map information thereby ruining the chances of the data projecting
properlyBUT on testing the original data and the projection info in ArcGIS 9i find everything works fineMadagascar
appears in the right place with spot-on laborde coords and correct lat
longsso..the mystery is...why is mapinfo not able to replicate the laborde
projection? having fiddled (at random) with the false
eastings/northings i have not been able to get a unifying parameter to
re-scale the values to compensate for anysimple 'metric-imperial
units' typeerrors (thanks Sam)..in other words the E and N need differingfactors for MI to get madagascar to 'locate' properly in the
world.. curious and a little annoying (its also the first time Mapinfo has
seriously stumped me in nearly 12 years...)
regards

[MI-L] donut polygons

2006-03-27 Thread Alison Deegan

Dear listers

Apologies if I am re-treading old
ground

I have a table of c. 25 000 objects imported from
another application. Some of these objects were originally drawn as "donut"
polygons (for example archaeological monuments like ring ditches with an inner
and outer line to show the width of the ditch). I would like to combine these
occurances into one polygon but need to find them first. Is there is simple way
to find one object that lies entirely within another object in the same table, I
don't understand the error messages I am getting when I attempt this.
Thanks

[MI-L] MapX geoset centring problem

2006-03-27 Thread Tim Aldridge
Title: Message

Hello,

I am having problems
opening MapX Geosets in MapInfo (7.5/7.8).
Whenever I attempt
to open a geosetit loads the data and then zooms to a completely different
place than it issupposed to. Geosets using the British National Grid
projection seem to centre on (40, 4470100) no matter where the centre should
be.
This does not seem to be a
problemwith geosets savedwitha lat/long projection, but seems
toaffect geosets saved in the other projections I've tried. It also
doesn't seem to be a problem when opening them in MapInfo 6.5.

Most of the data
being used is savedwith theBritish National Grid projection,
including some rasters, which demands that the geoset projection is the
same.

I am using Mapx
Geoset Utility (Version 2.6) as a tool in MapInfo.

Is there any way of
fixing this?

but it
still centres on (40, 4470100).
I also
get the same result if I delete the "\GEOSET\PROJECTION..." line or corrupt

Could
it be that this whole line is wrong?

You can easily create this table using the DBMS Catalog tool that you'll find

RE: [MI-L] Unable to Make DBMS Table Mappable

2006-03-27 Thread Peter Horsbøll Møller
You need to close the table and reopen it from the database.

If you have opened the table and it wasn't mappable, MapInfo will not check to
see if it has been mappable until you reopne the table from the database.
It's not enough to close the table and reopen the table using the tab file.

2006-03-27 Thread Warren Vick, Europa Technologies Ltd.
Hello Ross,

I didn't see any response to you query on the list re. MapWorld! I usually
go but am unsure about this year, particularly as the early bird pricing has
now passed. I usually make some I'm on MapInfo-L stickers for the
conference badges and I think there were about 10 listers attending last
year (excluding MapInfo staff).

Did anyone else notice some of the odd pricing for the event? For example,
when the very early bird prices were available (finished back in November
I believe), the cost of going to the event was $795 but $895 if you attended
last year (MapWorld Miami Alumni). There are some other inconsistencies
too.

Since starting MapInfo-L with John McCombs in 1994 I've been doing the list

Those who are well-aquainted with the list have seen Peter's many helpful

Hi Warren,

I guess some people last year didn't pay the bill from their minibar, so
MapInfo is trying to get the money for these in some way.
A good thing that they only ask people who went last year to pay a part of that
bill ;-)

Good idea with the stickers. Let me know if you don't make it this year. I'll
se if I can arrange for some stickers.
Maybe I just need a handful of stickers ;-)

I didn't see any response to you query on the list re. MapWorld! I usually go
but am unsure about this year, particularly as the early bird pricing has now
passed. I usually make some I'm on MapInfo-L stickers for the conference
badges and I think there were about 10 listers attending last year (excluding
MapInfo staff).

Did anyone else notice some of the odd pricing for the event? For example, when
the very early bird prices were available (finished back in November I
believe), the cost of going to the event was $795 but $895 if you attended last
year (MapWorld Miami Alumni). There are some other inconsistencies too.

Speaking of MapWorld, I'm wondering if we could make a list of those of us on
MI-L that will be in attendance. That way, we could have a mini-meeting of
sorts. It would be nice to know the faces behind the names.

Subject: [MI-L] New Moderator for MapInfo-L

Since starting MapInfo-L with John McCombs in 1994 I've been doing the list
maintenance ever since, but it occurred to me that if I ever get struck by
lightning or win the lottery, there'd be no one else ready and able to keep
things going. So last week I was talking to Peter Horsbøll Møller and asked if
he would like to take on the job as co-moderator so that I could take a break
once in a while. He agreed, so now when you send questions or requests to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] you'll be talking to both of us (or whoever is driving at the
time.)

Those who are well-aquainted with the list have seen Peter's many helpful
postings over the last few years, and I think he's got the knowledge and energy
to do a great job. If you want to find out a bit more, you can read his bio on
the MapInfo-L Wiki or go to http://www.horsboll-moller.dk/peter_eng.html. Also,
he told me he'll be at MapWorld this year, so if you're going, you can meet him
in person.

That's all the new for now!

[MI-L] MI elecrical applications

2006-03-27 Thread Eric Gagnon

Hi all

Are you aware, or is anybody working on electrical projects with mapinfo.
Ex: (utility poles, lines, city circuits, loads, infrastructure
inventory etc..)

would there be an MI add-on software out there or a mapbasic application
that would provide me with these functions.

Thanks,

Eric

It's normal to lose so much quality or I am doing something wrong?

 thanks a lot

You are doing something wrong. The compressed image should look almost
identical to the original. Is your original image larger than 500MB? I
think the compressor downsamples larger images. However you can use
FWTools ECW to compress arbitrairly large files.
(http://www.remotesensing.org/gdal/). Or you can tile your soruce
image before compressing.

[MI-L] Mapinfor problem

2006-03-27 Thread Peter Hatton
Title: Mapinfor problem

Hi all

I have come across a strange problem.we have a contour table which was edited and saved, upon re-opening the table there is no visible data. Display override still shows nothing. The browser indicates there is data as does the file size in Explorer. Window, Marquee select highlights the select and unselect button. Query, find selection in all windows, moves to the area but still no visible data BUT with the table editable and the data selected the node reshape button is not selectable. If anyone can help it would be very much appreciated.

 Regards

 Peter
