MD: Sharp MD MT-20?

1999-07-26 Thread Corn Beef

Hello people,

does anyone here own the new Sharp model?
It's available at http://www.wfv.de for DM399 which seems like a real
bargain.

http://www.jyu.fi/minidisc/minidisc/part_Sharp_MD-MT15+20.html

has some info on the unit. It says that "the MT20 takes AA rechargeables".
Apparently it will take regular AA Duracells as well, if the rechargeables
run out of power? Am I right?

Please help me if you can, I need to know.

Thanks,
Tom of Finland

Thanks everyone for your advice in speeding up my Win98, K6-2/333,
32MB RAM, ancient PCI videocard system.

The general concensus seems to be 64MB RAM or more first, after
fiddling around with virtual memory (which I've just performed). After
all the time I spent optimising everything loaded into the UMB area
to leave about 622K (636+ thousand bytes) conventional, *WITH* an
EMS page frame, I'm amazed I forgot about that.

you also might want to finsd a utility that reduces the size of your
hard drive cache.. windows burns RAM to cache your hard drives and if
you skip around alot in directories it will keep filling up and not
being used, dumped and refilled etc.. you can reduce how much RAM it
uses for this to practical amounts.

For instance, my dual Celeron 300A/256mb system running NT 4 wants to
use 32mb or more to cache the hard drive. i limited it to 4 mb.

MD: equipment advice, regarding the future

1999-07-26 Thread nick

G'day..

I've got a bit too much cash on hand, and not enough sense, so like a lot of
people nowdays, i'm looking at getting a MD setup..

As a mailing list, there have gotta be a few things that piss you off..
things like "this is better than that" which really only comes down to
personal opinion.. so i'm going to try not to ask simple questions.

I've done a bit of research.. two weeks ago i discovered that MD's are
rewriteable.. i was quite pleasantly surprised :) the setup i'm looking to
get is aimed at two things - portability and a good system for some sit down
listening/loud party mixes :)

As for portability, i was looking at the Sony MZ-E33.. which is reasonably
priced, and uses atrac-4, apparently.. it has the good headphone amp in it
that the original recorder has - i need it to drive some beefy sennheisers
:)
I've heard a few things about it tho - it only has a 10 second anti-shock
memory, and apparently this model is more susceptible to shocks than
others.. does anyone own one, and go running with it? find any problems?

For the home deck, i was gonna do the whole Sony thing and get the
MDS-JE330. As this is going to be something i'm looking at having for the
next 5 or more years, are there any technical limitations which this model
has which will piss me off in a year or so's time?
Buying a CD deck without an optical out really ticked me off, but luckily
the shop is going to trade it up to one with an optical for about $120..

the whole bundle, cd upgrade and everything, will come out at about $1000..
which is a lot, and i dont intend to re-spend in a few years time.

Any input will be appreciated..
Keep in mind, tho, that australia doesnt have the largest range of .. well
.. anything :) and sony more or less has a monopoly going.. which means they
sell us the stuff that is obsolete to the rest of the world, and they charge
the world for it.. and thats the sorta thing i'm interested in getting :) in
my experience, sony is a quality brand, and i regret buying yamaha equipment
over the good ole sony label..

thanks a heap
nick

You can compare an MD-blank best with flopyy-discs.

If you write a report, and you put it on differnt brands of discs does the
report change?

The answer is no. All discs contain the same data and if the data can be
read, this data will sound the same. The main difference is build-
quality. Ie, how long does the media last without giving read or write
problems. And some brands have beter cases/colours/labels.

I buy HiSpace since they offer good quality for a low price. And the new
colour HiSpace discs with the flip-cases offer average labels and an
index-card. I like the index-card a lot more than the sticker that you
have to stick to the case.

Cheers,
Ralph - who bought 8 colour HiSpace-discs for 169 FFr at FNAC Saturday!
(169 FFr eq $28. Ie, $3.5 per piece!)

The more annoying thing I find is the fact that the machine
 needs about 2
seconds to 'recover' when yuo change case. Meaning if you
 change case and
start 'typing' on the remote, the first few characters won't
 go in because
the Md player is still doing something.HOw many butchered

I think this is fixed on the newer decks - certainly the JB920

So my question is-- when listening at medium to loud levels
 [not so loud
as to cause a thermal cut-out in the amp], would it be
 beneficial to my
units to have the fan providing a steady and quite
 significant airflow over
and under the amp (on high speed the result is an airflow
 worthy of a wind-
tunnel but is rather noisier and I would only use in extreme
 circumstances).

I think that electrical items such as fans can make the
mains electricity quite noisy and may result in a
greater amount of noise coming through your speakers -
especially if the fan is very close to your amp.

MD: Problems with Minidisco

1999-07-26 Thread Matt Dramowicz

Hi guys/gals,

I havn't posted for quite a while but i thought I'd share a bad experience
I'm having with Minidisco. I've delt with them before and was very happy
with their service...until now. I originally sent them an email requesting
a price quote on the Xitel Platinum sound card and shipping to Canada. Rose
answered me with the following:

"Thanks for your interest and for your positive feedback! The Xitel
Storm Card sells for $78.95, with shipping to Canada the grand total is
$89.20. I will look into putting the weight specs for the card on our
website. Thanks for bringing that to our attention."

That was a good price so i went ahead and ordered it.however after i had
ordered it the price that appeared was $99.70. I emailed them back and told
them to make sure they fix the mistake and honor their quoted price.
I got a reply back from Adam saying that Rose had made a mistake in her
quote! I then emailed them and told them to cancel my order (since i could
get it cheaper from the manufacturer) unless they would honor their quote.
A few days went by and no answer. Then a charge for $99.70 appeared on my
VISA account!! I wrote them back and asked what was going on and they said
they never got the cancelation request!!!:

"Dear Matt,

All of this confusion is my fault and I am sorry for the hassle
and frustration this has caused you. The original price I quoted
you was for shipment in the US, not to Canada. You were not
refunded because we have no records of a cancellation. I trust that
this is a second mistake on our part and for this too, I
apologize. When the package does get delivered to you simply refuse
delivery, do not sign for anything, and the package will be shipped back
to us. Upon receipt we will refund your credit card. Thank you for
your patience and again a thousand apologies for my mistake."

The problem is that it has been two weeks since the item was sent back to
them, and they have not yet removed the charge of my account. Furthermore
they have been ignoring my e-mails about this problem since i have written
them three times in the last week (and recieved a confirmation auto-reply
from them each time!). I'm very mad since this charge is now on my current
bill and i have to pay for something i didn't want or get!!

Does anyone know the name and e-mail address of the head of Minidsco so i
can take this up with him/her? Please relpy to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I apologize for the length of this message but i thought you guys should
know that Minidisco seems to be slipping in their Customer Service. I hope
no one else has to put up with this type of treatment.

I agree that some additional electrical noise will doubtless be introduced,
but given I run the fan at the low setting only whan the volume is higher
than
normal [say 1W / channel], and at the high setting when cranked up beyond
about 15W / channel, it will be lost under the levels sent to the speakers.

The noise I was talking about was audible noise caused by the fan moving
the air, not interference. Switching between Off - Hi - Lo settings on
the fan cause a noticeable spike in the mains supply but running at any one
setting is fine. At even low-moderate volume levels, the sound generated
by the fan on Lo-speed is totally masked except between tracks.

Reasons? SLLLOOOWWW, and it doesn't work with the MD Editor software that
came with the MDS-PC1 (that I own). Only controls the first 200 CDs. :(
Plus the time functions leave much to be desired.
Found the CE535 to be a much more desirable unit. Only 5 CDs, but it keeps
running time of programs (even those which use multiple CDs), which makes
making MD mixes easier. Plus it can be controlled by the MDEditor, and is
much quicker on changes.

I assent to the limitations you describe: the MD editor limit of the first
200 discs is really dumb, although I do not currently use MD Editor and may
never. The keyboard input on the JB-930 when it comes out will probably
suffice for me.

The longer changing time is a reasonable trade off to me to have ALL my CD's
on tap. Plus, in shuffle play, I can tell the unit to have no delay in
playing from changer 1 to 2, which eliminates this problem. In recording
mixes, smart space seems to truncate any more than 3 seconds of disc changing
time.

Poor time display is a minor annoyance to me, but you are right. It should
be smarter.

To each their own, but to me, having all my music on tap, being able to
browse it from across the room or shuffle play my entire collection or groups
of it is the best thing that happend to my music listening since MD came out.
I like to make shuffle mixes recorded to MD and listen to a surprise mix of
music I might have neglected for years.

Thanks for your accurate viewpoints,

MD: Elektor SCMS Remover and Track Marks

1999-07-26 Thread Link :-7

Hi List,

Just wondering how many people out there use an Elektor SCMS remover.

Here is my dilemma.

The unit seems to put way too many track marks between tracks when I go
directly from a Sony D-E505 (CD Player w/ Optical Out) to either my Sony
JE-520 or Sharp 821.

When I successfully make an MD (sometimes I get too many track marks without
the Stripper involved, or I get short areas of silence), I can play the MD
in my JE-520, go into my Sharp and everything seems to be fine.

Just wondering what all this is... Is this Jitter?

Thanks for any replies!

Sincerely,

Mark J. Linkhorst
