Yup and I've got no complaints so far. I've only used them to record
digitally straight from CD and they sound fine. In case appearence
is a factor for anyone, the discs themselves are pale blue - a bit
 like the Samsung ones.
It's quite nice being able to walk into a high street store (I know

Is it just me or do we think now discs have broken the pound barrier in
high-street shops will further boost the sales of MD equipment therefore
lowering their price (if it is not already at the minimum affordable?), and
attract more people into MD? We need them, MD is now a small but
financially recognisable market for them but we could be killed if the
manufacturers of equipment and discs decided to drop it and they'd
hardly notice the loss.

Once MD becomes a mass market media, the new CC, only then can
we be sure it's future is safe for many many years. And I reiterate my
view that solid-state storage won't be viable within a decade or two.

The future's bright, the future's round and flat

have clocked up quite a few more years. Look at how HDs are going.

MD: Newbie question recording from Minidisc to CDR

1999-10-08 Thread Peter Brown

Hi

Being a newbie to minidiscs i have a question.

I am about to purchase a Sony MZ-R90 portable minidsic player.

I want to record to minidisc using binaural mics which I have worked out.

I then will want to record from minidisc to CDR (on a PC) and have not been
able to find a resource on the net that explains this. I was wondering if
anyone could point me to any resources about this or give me some tips.

This is what I have figured out and as far as I know it could be totally
wrong.

Is it possible to do digital to digital minidisc to CDR recordings? I
assume to do this u need a line out on the Sony minidisc that is a TOS
connection? Is this the case and is there a TOS line out on the Sony
minidisc recorder. Where does SPIDIF fall into this and what exactly are
SPDIF and TOS, are they different? Secondly you need a TOS/SPDIF connection
on the PCs soundcard (for the CDR). As long as that is the case I presume
these recordings can be made. Or am I wrong and is the only output on a
minidisc recorder analogue As you can see I am confused any any advice
would be appreciated.

Cheers
Pete

A. S/PDIF is the format of the audio data being transmitted (Sony/Philips
Digital Interface Format).

B. TOSlink (Toshiba Link) is a connection type for a physical medium
(optical) which may be used to transfer the above mentioned data (other
mediums include coax cables etc.)

C. What you need is a digital output from the Z90 (you'll have to check that
for yourself), if such an output exists it's probabely optical.

D. You need a soundcard with a digital input (SB Live/Value, Hoontech's ST
series etc.), and make sure the bracket on the card has the desired digital
connection (either optical or RCA(coax)). If you have the Live/Value you can
get Hoontech I/O board III for about 35$ which has both optical and RCA
input and output. (www.hoontech.com)

E. Then you record the audio stream from the MD using the sound card
DIGITALY to a standard PCM encoded file on your hard drive (.wav), after
which you're ready to burn it on a CDR in the standard CD-Audio format, thus
the whole proccess is done digitaly and the only source for audio quality
degredation is the ATRAC compression algorithm which is used to store the
audio data on the MD.

I just ordered an MDS-PC2 from Video Direct,
in Florida (800) 368-5020 for $289 + $15 shipping.
They inform me that they expect to receive a batch
of them from Sony in 10-15 days, so I should receive
it mid to late October.

But you leave out one important point - this list goes all over the world!
Where about in it are you?

My apologies. I live in the U.S. I don't mind the transfers being done
overseas, but I'd prefer to find someone in the U.S. if possible.

By the way, I also have a couple of DAT's I need transferred to CD-R. If
anyone can also handle that (digital transfers onto one track will suffice
as I can edit the CD later), let me know.

It'd be the solid-state equivalent of a MD machine.

Is this a joke? Where can you get a 64MB memory-card for about 2US$?
I can get a minidisc which stores 150MB of audio for less than that!
Pls don't say you use the Rio as I will really consider you a sad sad guy.

I use a Rio.. it's great for demonstrating how much better MD is. :o)

Seriously, I have never managed to see the point in the Rio. It's basically an MD with
no moving parts and no functionality, yet still manages to retain the high price point.
If I want to record something, I want a small device I can flick a switch on and start
recording, not find I have to take a few thousand ££'s worth of laptop computer and
software with me to do so. I spend about 2 to 3 hours each day using my MD to listen to
music, so I carry 3 discs with me - 1 in the recorder and 2 in the pocket on the carry
pouch. To do this with the Rio I would need. 3 Rio's! Well lets face it, at the
price a memory stick is you might just as well buy another Rio, at least you get more
for your money.

When they start making Rio's or similar devices with the ability to record at near CD
quality and memory becomes cheap enough for me to get 80 minutes worth for about
£2. I still wont be interested because by then MD will probably have moved on and
we'll be using those 650Mb discs and buying 80 minutes for something silly like 50p
each, with the new 650Mb discs costing maybe £5.

BTW - Memory prices are about to rise again apparently so your best off leaving memory
upgrades etc. until after XMas.

That's today's ranting over with! :o)

According to the latest Sony catalog the Z90 has the same 3 inputs/outputs
as the M55, i.e. analogue or optical line-in (same socket), microphone,
analogue line-out.

Shame really, it seems none of the portables have digital out.

To get from Minidisc to CDR you'll need to use a home deck with digital
outs, either coax or optical, whichever your pc soundcard can handle. I
bought a MDS-J520 earlier this year for what seemed like a ridiculously low
price of 127UKP. It has optical in and out as well as coax digital in.
There are some real bargains out there.

I use it to clone CD's from my CD player, or mp3s from my soundcard both
which only have digital coax out.

It's my impression that ATRAC as used in MD is a lossy compression
system. I doubt many pros would want to start out with a lossy system.
They might not mind publishing in such a format, but they would like to
retain as much info as possible until committed to final form.
