RE:MD: Sony Dropping MD
Hey I'd think about dropping MD if the cost of solid state media dropped to below 2UKP per hundred meg instead of circa 60UKP for 50mb. That is roughly what MD can store, and if there were mp3/whatever players out there that could write onto cheap archival media then I am sure it would be a big hit, but for the next three years I cannot see that happening! A colleague here in the UK tells me that they recently heard a radio programme in which it was suggested that Sony will drop MD in 12 to 18 months time due to the poor uptake of this technology in the USA and the impending large scale release ans promotion of solid-state digital media players now that SDMI is spec'd. I suggest we just put our flack jackets on and keep our BS Deflectors on standby! Keith - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear All, You are right, thickness of the track has been reduced in order to have a higher length of the groove in order to increase from 74 minutes to 80 minutes. TOC has also been changed, but I am not an expert and I can not give you more details on this topic. Concerning compatibility, I can tell you that there are NO PROBLEMS AT ALL with these medias. We have more than 30 different MD devices at the factory, all brands, all types, all ages and everything works well. I also own an MZ-R3 (still alive) and it works well on it ! So be confident ! Re: MD: md-l-digest V2 #403
I really hope someone out there can help me with my strange problem. I've had a sharp 702 for over a year now and have had no problems, not even that nefarious UTOC error. So, I put in a minidisc today and push play and what happens? The display says it is playing, scrolling the song name (fyi- it was Radiohead's Airbag) and even happily flickering its little decibel meter. But no sound is heard! I check the headphones- snuggly plugged in. And I hear the beeps when I change the track and whatnot, so I know the problem ain't the headphones. With the volume all the way up to 30, I can barely discern the extremely quiet music. All signs seem to point to some sort of messed up EEPROM setting, which no, I have never played with. Can anybody help me? Has anyone had this problem before? Thought i'd un-lurk at last seeing as i might be able to answer this question. A friend of mine had the same problem with his 702 - at full volume you could *just* about hear the music. Anyway, he sent it back to Sharp as it was within the guarantee period and they fixed it and returned it fairly quickly (there's details on how to return it in the box it came in). We guessed it was some kind of internal amplifier that had failed - so far i've been lucky with my own 702 which i've had since April, so perhaps not *all* of these units develop faults :-). And, to add to the soundcard debate, i've just got the new SB Live Platinum, and its a great card. Those of you in America may wish to get one from Europe since european models come with a Live!Drive 2 (front panel which goes in 5 1/4" bay) which has optical in/out, whereas american models come with a Live!Drive 1 which lacks these connectors. Funnily enough it also comes with the longest Toslink cable i've ever seen, rather negating the need to have front panel access to optical connectors. One screwdriver I found in the road and the previous owner had ground the blade off. A saw was purchased around 1947 after WW II by my brother's father-in-law. I found it rusty and lying outside on the ground. It had been sharpened so many times, by someone that didn't know how to sharpen a saw, that I couldn't tell if it was a rip saw or a cross cut saw. I took it back to Sears and fully expected them to just get a big laugh out of seeing it in that shape. Well, the saw was so old (this was in the middle seventies or early eighties) that they couldn't find the catalog number and we couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be a rip saw or a crosscut saw. So, they just told me to go back to the saw display and pick out the one I wanted. They wrote up the warrantee info and gave me the new saw to take back to my brother. They never asked for a receipt on any of these instances, just the fact that I had their product, and it had a lifetime warrantee was good enough. -- Jim Coon Not just another pretty mandolin picker mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] If Gibson made cars, would they sound so sweet? In America it's common practice. I think the same goes for the life-time warenty. It's a term that's well defined in the small print. Ie, you can't blame the manufacturer. MD: Hesitating sound
Hi all, I've got a new problem, maybe you can help me. It never happened anything like this before, but it's two days that I'm trying to record some MP3s to my JE530, using an optical connection from my SBLive + Hoontech Optical daughterboard to my MD deck. What's happening is that every now and then the sound coming from WinAmp (but it shows in Liquid Audio too) "hesitates" resulting in a strange sound, like if a bit was lost in the reading process, or like it was read twice. I've tried re-installing both WinAmp and Liquid Audio with no luck. I've also defragmented the hard drive, but the problem remains. This has been happening for a couple days, and there has been no changement in my PC configuration, nor I had installed any new program. Any idea what it can be? MD: stuck disc
Hello List, I have a Sony JE510 deck which won't eject the disc. I hear a whirring/plastic sound then nothing. When I turn it off and on again reads "blank disc" but when put into record mode flashes "loading error" Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this? Is it worth trying to get it repaired or since prices on new decks are so good now should I just get a new one. If I do get a new deck would anyone care to suggest what would be a good buy. They will replace the item for free as long as you still own it, and you're still alive. I'm beginning to wish I lived in the US. If you now examine TDK video casettes they have a lifetime guarantee, but things are so bad in the UK regarding these now that TDK supply labels to stick onto their products stating the guarantee is good for as long as the format is still available. They started doing this in the UK beacuse brands such as Scotch, Memorex, ProTape (aka Radio Shack / Tandy own brand), Bush and countless others all brand their tapes etc. with lifetime guarantees, but so far not one person has ever managed to make a claim to the knowledge of Trading Standards. UNfortunately the way the laws work in this country prevent us from taking much other ation than not buying the products, but that has little effect when the majority of these brands are the cheap ones bought by most people who simply cannot afford to spend the money on decent recording media.
