Re: MD: sound blaster live value

2000-04-16 Thread Hannes Rohde

Brent Harding wrote:

But, if I'm on netmeeting and turn the volume for the show down,
could I keep recording, so I can record the whole show including
the part where I'd be on? There's this show I listen to sometimes
that takes calls on netmeeting, and I'd like to be able to record
it, and be able to participate in it.

Hmm, sounds like it's going to be complicated:
Although I don't know NetMeeting, I believe it requires your part of
the communication to be recorded to the computer. To do this, you have
to set the recording setting from "what you hear" to "microphone" or
you will be recording your voice plus the continuing show and send it
to them, which is probably not what you want to do...

Another problem could arise because you would then be recording to two
applications at the same time (your own recording plus the NetMeeting
recording). I have not tried it, but the SBLive might not be able to
do this...

Any way to do it? If I bought a minidisc recorder, would that help any?
Well, you could record to minidisc :-)

I was thinking that thing mentioned on the list about the idea of
playing a recording into a remote would be good, to have it d
things when I want to, how does it work? When you play it, how does
the minidisc recorder know what to do with the other devices at the
time? Like, if I recorded various shows from satellite or something,
would I be able to have the computer or other source turn on and turn
down the program during the commercial break and come back on when
it's done, possibly putting music in between, or just pausing the
minidisc so I can have enough space to record without having to
 do anything with it?

Hmm, can't comment on this...

Bye,
  Hannes

MD: ATRAC Algorithm Clarification

2000-04-16 Thread RJ [EMAIL PROTECTED]

A few months ago one of our members posted a thread stating that he had
written an ATRAC coder in software, and that all the information needed to
implement it was readily available. Well I am a computer sci/eng student so
I figured, why not. And I have spent several months learning the math I
needed to deal with the theory involved with all of this. And I have
succeeded in writting an ATRAC software implementation, with one caveat. He
stated that he had problems with window size selection, I solved that
problem (with ALOT of help from a very generous discrete signal theory
professor at a distant university). But what I cannot solve is that the
ATRAC spec calls for a QMF analysis/synthesis bank, in order for these to
work properly, the analysis equation used must be the correct pair for the
synthesis bank. No one has published (as far as I can find) the synthesis
algorithm for ATRAC decoders. I was wondering if anyone knew the answer to
this as it is the last step I need to finish my coder.

MD: sb live! value + hoontech = ?

Two more things: 1) Where can I get the best price for a soundblaster live! value
card? 2) Are there more than one "version" of sb live! value card? and if so, will
the Hoontech bracket work with all of them?

Thanks for your help. If you reply to me personally please reply to

Re: MD: sound blaster live value

2000-04-16 Thread Brent Harding

Oh, if I used what you hear, the show would hear me in an echoed format?
That's the trouble there, if I switch it to microphone, then I don't get
the other person's side recorded with it, and if two recording events at a
time can't work, then it won't work either.

I'm curious why everyone likes the sb live card soo much? I purchased one
and have had nothing but trouble with it from day one. I'm pretty much 100
aureal chipset any more. as for a generic toslink out card, IMO the Xitel
is one of the best as long as your using ms products. anyway that's my 2
cents.

I am just trying to get an inexpensive optical in on a soundcard so that I can get my
home deck optical out hooked up to it directly. The whole sb live value ($40) and
hoontech optical in bracket (~$30) can be had for $70. I already have the Xitel, but
it only has optical out. Anyway when I switched the card to my new computer with
Windows 98, I can't even get the Xitel optical out to work. Do you have any
suggestions for an inexpensive optical in on a soundcard?
