Re: MD: sound blaster live value

2000-04-17 Thread Maciej Rutkowski

Hi!

Does the sound blaster live value have a optical digital out?
No, but you can make one! :)

A 220ohm resistor, red diode and a piece of cd-in cable is needed.
you put the resistor between the diode and spdif-in's GND and voilla! It
works perfectly for me!
The diode has to be with a wavelenght of about 660nm (bright, pure red).
Well, just look at the minidisc.org page, the article is "Super cheap
TOSLINK transmitter".
I don't take the responsibility...

MD: help! dropouts!!

2000-04-17 Thread Jeff Rodenkirch

I did a live mix for Univision (spanish language network), gave them a feed
(which dumped) and did a backup on my MZR50. The problem is the MDs are
dropping out, even on a "PRO" (Sony $2500+) player. The disks play back
better on my R50 than the "PRO" unit but there are still dropouts. I have
not flown the material in to an editor so I don't know if stuff is gone or
the player is having problems reading the disk. At one point the "PRO" unit
sat for about ten seconds with the clock stopped and only silence comming
out.

Has anyone had this problem and can anyone suggest a fix???

p.s. I could probably edit from other takes but I don't want to.

Re: MD: help! dropouts!!

2000-04-17 Thread Tony Keogh

Dunno but it sounds a bit like the "stuttering" problem I had with my Sony
520 recently. The discs which were recorded on the 520 played fine on
another MD player but on the 520 they stopped and started in a stuttering
manner and the timer stopped and started with them. The problem is
absolutely consistent on repeat plays of the "faulty" disc.

Opinions on md-I varied from dust to bad discs to laser misalignment to a
damaged laser... and through it in the bin. At first I suspected Maxell
discs but it happened on an Arita as well and it seemed too much of a
co-incidence. Brought it back into Richer Sounds here in Ireland who sent
it to Sony who cleaned it and sent it back today "no fault found"... it
remains to be seen. I'm pretty sure it's not the discs cos I filled the
balance of the disc, then deleted the offending section and re-recorded.. no
problem.

Dunno if that's any help... maybe it's just a bit of dust... you might be
lucky.

You might consider a set of our Low Cost Binaural mics. They seem to be
very popular among budget-concious MD tapers for concerts, lectures,
interviews and ambience.

For details, please see our Web page or send email.

I've got one of those, and I love it.

  1. Anyone know where I can get a copy of the manual?

I don't know the answer to this one. :( Sorry.

  2. Does it use standard AA Ni-cads or some special Sony batteries?

In the manual, it says you can use two nickel-cadmium rechargeable
batteries (NC-AA), or two size AA (LR6) alkaline batteries.

Mine came with the rechargeables, and they've worked just fine for me.

  3. Can all functions be performed without the remote?

Yep! Apparently the remote isn't very nifty, but I use it all the
time. You can order extra remotes, too.

Can you use a MZ-R55 or MZ-R50 with the MZ-R37?

MD: MXD-D3

2000-04-17 Thread James Jarvie

Hi folks. I just purchased a Sony MDX-D3 on Friday (3
days ago).  I got it at The Wiz (I hate that store;
but they are convenient geographically, and they had a
sale going on). I paid USD 270.00. I haven't had a
chance to even take the unit out of box yet; but once
I get going with it, I will do some A-B dubbing at
normal speed and a 4X, and let you know if I hear any
differences.

I will also redo those recordings that I talked about
last week (made on a Sharp MT-15), in which I heard
some definite differences between the CD and the MD
recordings (Magic had hypothesized that the Sharp
ATRAC did not do chamber music and classical guitar as
well as the Sony ATRAC).

I probably won't get a chance to do this until next
week sometime, since it is Holy Week, and I'll be
singing in church Wednesday through Sunday.

I will keep you posted.

James

MD: Sony Minidisk Recorder with USB?

2000-04-17 Thread Neon John

Hi, new to the list.

I was waltzing through the Knoxville, TN Best Buys today when my eye
caught an apparently new player/recorder. It looked like the Sony
MZ-R55 (I know it had "55" in the name). What caught my eye was the
Best Buys blurb that said that it could transfer MP3 files via a USB
interface. Since I'd come in the store to look at Diamond Rio
products, I suddenly snapped to attention and whipped out the
plastic. Of course they didn't have the unit in stock. Off to the
nearby Circuit City. Same type blurb (salesman even tried to sell
me a USB cable and hub) and of course they didn't have it either,
though their computer said they had 55 of 'em in the "warehouse".
As a last ditch effort, I went to Service Merchandise where I did
buy a MZ-R55. Took it right back when I learned it had only the
optical interface.

Looking around the net tonight, I can't seem to find anything about
this, including on Sony's site.

So.. Is Best Buys and Circuit city making this up? Is there such a
device? Of any brand? I really don't want to buy a fancy sound
card to get the optical interface. Just want to stick my favorite
music out on minidisk and do it digitally.

Thanks,
John
