MD: rec-pause + koss eq-30
hi all, so IMO the best options for rec-pause(or lack of it are) 1. slide for immediate recording, OR slide and hold for record-pause(like the Aiwa models) 2. slide for immediate recording 3. rec-pause with time-machine recording(even just 2 secs, but this may have an adverse effect on battery life) 4. option stored in memory allowing choice of immediate rec OR record-pause(although as stated this can lead to confusion) 5. rec-pause but i guess the best option depends whether there is AGC...but the Aiwa option is by far the best on another note, has anyone got the Koss EQ-30(a mini/portable/handheld graphic equaliser)? is it worth the $30US? I think all this only applies to recordings you make yourself though... Nope, it applies to pre-recorded MDs as well. An MD still has the same capacity, whether pre-recorded or "made at home," so it is subject to the same limitations. What Sean said about the differences between classical an "other" music is for the most part correct, though. It's more difficult for MD to compress classical music without losing very audible parts of the content. yeah..I'm only spewing stuff that I've read from other places, so forgive me if I'm just perpetuating lies LIES here.. erm.. it gives me a misguided (and incorrect) sense of importance.. ANYway.. Whilst I would have little technical comprehension of how discs could be coded differently yet still read on the same machines, surely this is what is happening? I mean, how can manufacturers have different ATRAC systems, and release different versions of them with new MD models, and yet the discs can all be read by any MD machine (well..supposedly)? Isn't this something to do with the way that ATRAC bit allocation assigns varying bits to blocks depending on the complexity of each..er..part (you can tell I'm floundering here, yes?)? I've just picked up this info on this site.. http://www.minidisc.org/minidisc_faq.html#Q5 13.Does ATRAC have "forward compatibility," or is it a static algorithm? Does the ATRAC version affect the quality of the recording or the playback? The encoder (recording) side of ATRAC offers room for improvement from one generation to the next (specifically, in the decision about how to allocate encoding bits so as to best match human psycho-acoustic properties). Thus, MD recordings made on a newer machine with a better ATRAC encoder will sound better than old recordings, even when played back on an old machine. The decoder (playback) side of ATRAC has a fixed structure, and though ATRAC chips are all generally expected to decode with nearly the same quality, increases in digital signal processing accuracy may allow slight audio quality improvements (if those improvements have not already been made to modern ATRAC chips). Endofquote Doesn't this mean that if you recorded some classical music from a CD (say) using second generation ATRAC, and then you bought a pre-recorded MD of the same music which had used 3rd generation coding, that the latter would sound better, regardless of which ATRAC the player had on board? Re: MD: Beeps and more...
I've checked these "special" cables out a bit more and, while they're still analog, they plug into your sound card's USB port, which the manufacturers claim leads to the improved S/N ratio. On the other hand, several companies have these USB-miniplug cables for under $20, so even if I buy the argument, I don't have to buy the Xitel cable... Thanks for all of the responses on this question. Are there any thoughts out there on the Aiwa machines, as far as their sturdiness and quality of recorded sound are concerned? * Sean Buckingham [EMAIL PROTECTED] on Mon, 05 Jun 2000 | Whilst I would have little technical comprehension of how discs could be | coded differently yet still read on the same machines, surely this is what | is happening? Not even close. What is different is the psychoaccoustic model used for the encoding process. The way ATRAC functions is that it takes an input stream and breaks it up into a number of bands, each of which has a fixed data width. The first thing that happens is that the psychoaccoustic model is used to determine how many bands or channels are allocated to different frequency ranges. That is, if a chunk of music has a lot of high frequency sounds but few low frequency sounds, more bands will be allocated to the high frequency ranges and fewer to the low frequency ranges. More bands means greater resolution and fidelity. Once bands have been allocated, each band is processed with the psychoaccoustic model to remove sounds that cannot be heard. Improvements to ATRAC are really improvements to the psychoaccoustic models used for encoding. The "format" of data on a disc is identical; the difference is in which bits are recorded and which are not. And as the psychoaccoustic model has absolutely nothing to do with playback, there is 100% forward and backward compatability. -- Rat [EMAIL PROTECTED]\ Warning: pregnant women, the elderly, and Minion of Nathan - Nathan says Hi! \ children under 10 should avoid prolonged PGP Key: at a key server near you! \ exposure to Happy Fun Ball. - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yeah, all I needed was a stereo miniplug to two quarter inch mono plugs. it was all good. The radio shack shielded gold plug cost me $7. The quality of the cables does make a difference in some cases. Monster cable is waaay expensive. I sing for a band and I went through two $20 microphone cords with in a month during performances. Since they were lifetime guaranteed, I got em replaced free, but I do a lot of microphone tricks involving spinning and throwing and catching the mic so it was time to find a new cord. I got a Monster Cable mic cord for $50 and I could probably tow a car with it and it would still work. It's shielded to keep extra noise out and sounds great. joe. "J. Coon" wrote: David Witzany wrote: One last question, not directly related to any of the above. A recent post complained about the amount of noise added to music when recorded off of a computer. NO! Contrary to what the audio stores tell you, it isn't the cost or the quality of the cables, (unless they are extreemly junkie). The qusetion is do you have the right type of cables. MD: Track marks problem linked with digital recording
Some days ago, I made a digital copy of the Corrs MTV Unplugged album. I noticed that the total recorded time on MD was inferior to the total time of the CD. When I played the MD, I noticed that a lot of the tracks were often amputed of 1 second or 2 (even more sometimes). The result is that it's quite unpleasant to listen cause it is a live concert. When you listen to the CD, there's no interruption in the disc (especially between the songs where you hear the audience). On the MD, at the end of some tracks, you can hear the audience but it's suddenly cut by the beginning of the new track. To solve this problem, I decided to make an analog copy. Cause I use sync-rec and due to the fact that there's no interrution in sound, I had a 64 min 12 sec long track. Then I put the track marks manually (very easy with the jog wheel of the Sharp 722). Is there a solution to make a digital recording without track marks? - To stop getting this list send a message containing just the word "unsubscribe" to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: MD: Sony MDSJE530 Richer Sounds
I am thinking of getting the Sony MDSJE530 from Richer Sounds. I was wondering if anyone has had any good or bad experiences with the deck or Richer Sounds. Richer Sounds are great *if* they have the stock - always ring and check first (they'll usually offer to put items aside for you). If you've not been to one before, they're totally different from most hifi dealers; tiny shops that can get pretty crowded but the staff are usually really friendly and know their stuff. Many of them only have one demo room though so book in advance if you want to try the unit out (and try to go midweek). Just about all of the hifi in my household came from them, including my MZ-R55 and my brother's Pioneer MDJ-707 deck, and I'll certainly go on using them in the future. Check What Hifi? magazine before you go - Richer Sounds often carry adverts in there with prices that are lower than usual. As for the deck - I don't own one but a friend does, they're very happy with it. Good range of sockets, excellent facilities and it's been well-recieved by the hifi press.
