MD: Remote beep hack?

2000-12-11 Thread Jonathan Oakley

Hi all

Has anyone managed to hack any of the Sony portables to disable the annoying
beep you get when a remote button is pressed? The continuous beeping in
pause is particularly irritating...

Cheers

Jonathan Oakley

On some of the newer models, it can be turned off through regular functions
with no need to hack.

Not on my ancient R3, though: I listen to it through the line-out jack and
use headphones with an in-line volume control.

MD: Earbuds in the UK

2000-12-11 Thread Robin Landy

I cannot find ANYWHERE in the UK (either on the web, or on the high
street) which sells earbuds above 20 UK pounds. (although I know that
Index does do the Sony 268s for £35 - this is the exception). There
are plenty of places doing big, expensive *head-phones*, but no where
with ear-buds. I'm thinking of spending around 50 UK pounds. Does
anyone know of anywhere with a decent range? I *was* thinking of
simply ordering them from a US site, but the shipping appears to make
them prohibitively expensive (although again, if anyone knows of
anywhere which will *cheaply* ship to the UK, please give me the
URL).
Cheers
Robin.

No Subject

2000-12-11 Thread Jaques, Yves (FIDI)

I'm looking for some purchase advice. There are a lot of models, and it's
difficult for me to decide on which to buy.

This is what I want to record:

ambient sound, from the city to the sea.
So I don't care about digital inputs, and I don't care about extended play.

What seems important for my situation:

1. Best possible sound (i.e. good A/D converters)
2. Small size
3. Long battery life

Please advise. I don't want to spend money for features I'll never use, but
I want high-quality guts.

MD: MZ-R90 problems

2000-12-11 Thread Jens Thomas

Hi

My MZ-R90 started playing up recently by skipping (jumping a lot and
cutting out - just like a scratched vinyl LP). Luckily it was still under
guarantee so I took it back to the shop and they sent it off to be
repaired. I got it back today (the reciept said "fitted laser assy and
tested to spec") but it is still skipping - if anything worse than before.
Because of this I thought the problem might lie with the discs, but I've
just tested my discs on my friend's Sharp 722 and they play fine. What is
really confusing me is that his disc (unfortunately he only has one with
him) plays perfectly in my MZ-R90 - no skipping or anything. It appears
that my player only dislikes discs it recorded itself?!?

Can anyone tell me what the problem might be and what I should do? - I'm
loathe to take it back to the shop, as it took them a month to repair and
it has come back covered in gunk.

Thanks

Jens

Probably don't. AFAIK the stereo connector for a MD minijack is
unbalanced: L R and ground.

The three wires of a XLR connectors are ground, signal+ and signal- for a
balanced signal.

There are two ways of achieving what you want:

The pretty one: use a external box for suplying phantom power to the mic,
and convert the signal from mic, balanced to line unbalanced. They usually
supply roll-off filters and the like also...

The ugly? one: you can always convert a balanced signal to unbalanced if
you shorcircuit ground and signal-. Theoretically, if you solder signal+
to the tip and intermediate ring of a minijack, join signal- and ground
and solder it to the ring, that will do the trick. What I don't see clear
is what happen with phantom power, or if you will still be able to supply
power to the mic. I'd bet yes, but don't believe me...

I wouldn't try, specially w/ expensive equipment (MD), without
reading a confirmation from someone here first... ;)

Unless your charger says it is capable of charging NiMH, I would seriously
consider the purchase of a NiMH capable charger.

Would it be damaging to charge a Ni-Mh battery with a Ni-cd battery charger?

Also I have the correct charger that takes 100V from Japan. What kind of
 damage will this do?

MD: What is Sony thinking?!?

2000-12-11 Thread David Helgerson

How can the folks at Sony be so thick-headed?

The Fall 2000 issue of Sony Style magazine advises us to connect the USB
PCLink to our computers to "record mixes to your MD recorder with almost no
loss in sound quality."

To further reinforce their contention that MD doesn't sound as good as it
could, they go on to advertise their MDW-80D premium discs as being
constructed in a way that "reduces vibrations during disc rotation to
produce even better sound."

While MP3 advocates crow about their "near CD sound quality," Sony seems to
want to warn people that Minidisc doesn't really sound that good.

No, if the mike uses phantom power, there isn't enough voltage from the
MD to make it work. If you are handy enough to attach a stereo mini
plug, just make one of my T mikes. THey work just fine.

It's the same thinking that brought us that beloved END SEARCH button
that lets people record over material they want to keep.

RE: MD: Battery Charger

2000-12-11 Thread Simon Longhurst

I have been using a 1500mAh Ni-Mh in my R-70 with great results. No
real heat buildup it just takes several hours longer to charge. It's not the
best way to charge a Ni-Mh as it has a slightly higher cell voltage than a
Ni-Cad but works never the less. I get about 18 hours playback with it.

Most Ni-Cd chargers will happily charge a Ni-MH though normally take longer
due to the Ni-MH higher capacity and as noted above may not quite achieve
full cell capacity.

One thing to note however is that the AA Ni-MH cells I have seen are not
stamped with a extra-fast recharge rate; my 1300mAH Ni-MH cells are rated
as 210mA for 8 hours or 130mA for 14-16 hours, whereas my 650mAH Ni-Cd are
350mA for 2 hours or 150mA for 5 hours, or 65mA for 14-16 hours. Both
cells are manufactured by Uniross by the way.

Whether the Ni-MH could be safely charged at, lets say 350mA for 4 hours I
know not, though I'm tempted to think doing so may shorten their overall
number of useful recharge cycles, and given modern Ni-Cd generally are
stated as having about twice the cycles of Ni-MH I don't think its worth
risking it. So whilst I have few qualms about charging the Ni-Cd in my
R3, I won't do that with the Ni-MH.

Yours,
PrinceGaz.

MD: MDH-10

2000-12-11 Thread Howard Chu

I just got a Sony MDH-10 data drive (thru eBay, $150). I'm having some
problems with it on my Win'98 VAIO laptop, using the Win'95 drivers v1.25
from the Sony web site. Has anyone else had any trouble with using these
drivers on Win'98?
Specifically, if the drivers are present when I boot, Windows fails with
"initalizing device SHELL: unable to load KRNL386.EXE" and then eventually
says "It's now safe to turn off your computer." (How nice.)

I can boot in command mode, rename the offending VXDs, and then reboot
successfully. Then after Windows is up and running, I put the VXDs back in
place and then I can use the drive. Rather annoying.

Since these drivers aren't any use unless the drive is connected, is there
any way to force Windows to postpone loading them until I've plugged in the
drive? (I figure the SCSI drivers must already work this way, since I'm
using a PCMCIA SCSI adapter...)

MD: Sony MD-X5: Any good?

2000-12-11 Thread Aileen Chen

Hi all,

i am going to be getting a new shelf system for christmas, and i was looking
at the sony md-x5...does anybody have any praises or gripes about the
system? i heard it in the store...the sound seems kind of weak, but i
happen to like the built-in MD recorder/player.

While I'm on that subject.. is it better to have a separate deck or to have
an integrated system? All I do is copy cds to md, and i occasionally dump
mp3s onto md (though I'm considering getting a portable to do the mp3-md).
i already have a je-320 and i was considering just buying a shelf system
with an optical digital out so that i could do transfers and such...but the
MD-X5 is so much cheaper and seems like a good idea... =)

Does anybody have any recommendations about this subject at all? :) Please
let me know or point me to someplace that can help me out.

Thanks a bunch (and in advance),
Aileen
