The sign said that it came with
a USB cable that allowed you to digitally record MP3 files to MD. My
question is what in the world are they referring to, and where can I just
get the cable sinc eI already have that recorder?

It's really just a USB DAC. It's not a digital transfer.

Even so I wish I know how to get that exact unit they sell with that
package. It must be cheaper than the ones other companies make, and it would
*have* to have better sound quality than my terrible soundcard on my PC.

Re: MD: Real Player to MPEG or AIFF?

2001-03-22 Thread Julian Morey

I want to be able to burn some CD of the Real Audio files, can't do this
as they are.
Yes the quality is crap - but this is the only way I can get these
recordings (live DJ sets).

Is there anyway of converting Real Player files to AIFF or MPEG?, on a

 Mac.
 MPEG would be better.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to? RealAudio is about radio
quality already, and I doubt changing compression formats (RA-MP3)
will help the quality any.

i read here the other day that the MZ-R70 is not a good unit.

can someone that knows the score, tell me exactly what its limitations
 are?

It depends what you plan to do with it.

The Sony MZ-R35, -R37, -R70, -R90 and -R91 have a common problem that
makes them less than desirable for live concert recording: they do not
have a low sensitivity setting for the mic pre-amp. So if you record
loud music, the mic pre-amp will tend to overload and distort. For that
reason we recommend other Sony models: the older MZ-R55, -R50 and R30;
and the new -900. And the -R70 is a bit slow and noisy. (By the way,
they're all fine for ripping tracks from CDs.)

But in general (and except for the Sony -900), for concert recording,
the Sharp MD recorders are better choices. The Sharps allow you to
change recording levels while you're recording -- the Sony's require you
to go into "Pause." We'd strongly recommend the Sharp MS-722, -821,
-831 or -SR60. If budget is a strong consideration then we'd recommend
the Sharp MT-15, MT-20 or MT-66 -- they lack the automatic gain control,
have 10 second (rather than 40 second) buffers but are still good,
reliable recorders.

I found a eat solution to my requirement to record from my PC's optical input

to record, play, stop and save. I found it at

I hope this is of use to someone else.

minidisco.com sells all kinds of stuff for mp3 to minidisc
conversion. honestly, i wouldn't buy any of them because they're
overpriced, and i have my own solution.

but if i were looking into that sort of thing, i'd just invest in a

shady. and i've used one (not the digital usb, but analog) and it's not

MD: MDLP portable with smooth single-cycle shuffle?

2001-03-22 Thread David W. Tamkin

I'm looking to buy an MDLP portable with the following playback characteris-
tics; the MZ-R900, per Brian Youn's review, meets the criteria but I'm hoping
for something less expensive.

Recording is not necessary; I never record in the field and I've an MDS-JB940
at home that can lay down the tracks.

What's important is the shuffle play: I want a unit that can play one cycle
of all the tracks and then stop on its own instead of starting another cycle
if nobody stops it, and which can segue smoothly from track to track without
an interruption between them. So far every unit I own either inserts a si-
lence between tracks or won't stop after one cycle.

Program play would be really nice to have as well.

Any suggestions for such a machine? Thanks.

If the only thing you'd need the new soundcard w/ optical out for is the
optical out then I'd recommend the Xitel DG-1 (the digital usb transfer
thingy). I have one, it's pretty nice, really eazy to set up and all
that jazz and quite simple to use. I don't use it all that much (I have
cd players w/ digital out and a cd-r, and on my current 26.4kbps
connection I don't download tons of mp3s) but for what it's used for it
works very well, and surely not "shady" in the least bit. Most sound
cards w/ digital out (as far as I've heard) will not automatically
record track marks unless you set it up for the 2 or 3 seconds of
silence between tracks, so beware buying a cheap soundcard just because
it has digital out.

Re: MD: Earbuds

2001-03-22 Thread Chad Gombosi

What's the diference in the sound that cames out of Left Rigth earphones.
Diferent frequencies?

Not exactly. With stereo audio the sound of certain things will move from
ear to ear. Because a persons ear are in two different places, he/she hears
two different versions of the same sound. Sometimes recording enginers will
get clever and purposfully move (pan) things from left to right and back. If
you can only hear in your right ear, then when the sound moves to your left
ear it will drop out totally.

to use both (L R) connectors in only you ear? will i take any advantage
in buying one?

You could buy a single mono earbud (probably hard to find of good quality)
and buy an adapter that will convert the stereo jack on the MD player to
mono. This will give you both left and right channels in the same single
earbud.

If you want to use the same earbuds you have now, then you could buy a
stereo to mono, and a mono to stereo adaptor and chain them together. This
way you will get the same thing in both left and right earbuds, and you can
just cut the other one off or something.

i hope my question is clear! somtime my english get's a bit hard to

I hope my answer is clear, my English isn't so great either, and it's my

Sony's MDLP decks cannot; like other Sony MD decks, they stick a moment of
silence between each two tracks in shuffle mode, though they manage to segue
smoothly in program mode. They can, however, play one shuffle cycle and stop
on their own without starting another.

My Sony decks behave and my Aiwa portable behave as I just described; my Sony
portables don't interrupt between songs in shuffle mode but after finishing a
shuffle cycle they start another unless you stop them.

I could use an MDLP portable anyway, and it would be nice to get one that
does shuffle the way I want, and I hope that won't mean popping for an R900.

MD: Sony R900 vs. R90

2001-03-22 Thread Nathan F. White

I want to get rid of my R90 because of two reasons:

1) no good for live recording (very hard to adjust levels in the dark)
2) Doesn't go even close to loud enough. I set the rec levels as high as
they will go, and its still too quiet. I use sony 888 earbuds.

Anyone have any recommends? Thanks,

Right, both the analog and digital USB to MD link that Sony sells with
their machines is made by Xitel (see www.xitel.com). The analog one is
called the MD-Port AN1, and the digital one is the MD-Port DG1. Both
are available from Minidisco (even if you go to Xitel's site and try
to buy it, Minidisco handles the sales for them). However, the DG1 has
compatibility problems; as far as I can tell Xitel goofed on the
design of the DG1 and so it *only* really works with the MZ-R90 and
later Sony machines.

I notice that Japan-Direct is selling the "CatchSound PC Link" (see
URL:http://www.japan-direct.com/shopping.asp?prodid=256) a USB to
digital audio out device. I've asked Randy (owner of Japan-Direct) but
no word yet on whether it works better than the Xitel device (but it
would be hard for it to do worse!). It's the same price as the Xitel
part (modulo shipping fees from Japan).

By the way, I've used the Xitel MD-Port AN1 (analog version) and it
works quite well. It's really quiet and I wouldn't have any qualms
whatsoever about using it for high quality MP3-MD recordings.
