Not exactly. With stereo audio the sound of certain things will move from
ear to ear. Because a persons ear are in two different places, he/she hears
two different versions of the same sound. Sometimes recording enginers will
get clever and purposfully move (pan) things from left to right and back. If
you can only hear in your right ear, then when the sound moves to your left
ear it will drop out totally.

You could buy a single mono earbud (probably hard to find of good quality)
and buy an adapter that will convert the stereo jack on the MD player to
mono. This will give you both left and right channels in the same single
earbud.
If you want to use the same earbuds you have now, then you could buy a
stereo to mono, and a mono to stereo adaptor and chain them together. This
way you will get the same thing in both left and right earbuds, and you can
just cut the other one off or something.
