Don't get composite and component mixed up.

Composite Video typically uses one RCA, F-Type, or one BNC
connector at each end of a 75-ohm coaxial cable to transmit
all the signals required for colour video: luminance (brightness)
and chrominance (colour). Video colour modulation schemes such as
NTSC (National Television Standards Committee) and PAL
(Phase Alternation Line) are examples of composite video.
Cable TV often includes sound within your cable TV connection.

S-Video uses MiniDin 4-pin connectors at each end of a cable
that has two small 75-ohm coaxial cable lines running within
it. S-video keeps the luminance signal (brightness signal)
and chrominance signal (colour signal) separated. One line
(or pin) carries the luminance signals, one carries the
chrominance signals, and the other two lines (or pins) each
are ground wires. Adding the luminance and chrominance signals
together produces a composite video signal (above). S-video
is also known as Separate Video or Y/C video because the
Y signal (brightness) and C signal (colour) are separated.
S-video is designed to provide a better quality picture than
  composite video.

Component Video typically uses three RCA connectors or three
BNC connectors at each end of a cable consisting of three
separate 75-ohm coaxial cable lines within it. However,
three individual 75-ohm coaxial cables with the same
connectors can also be used. Component video separates
the luminance signal (brightness signal) from the sub-components
of the chrominance signal (the blue signal and the red signal).
Notice that blue and red will produce green to achieve a completed
RGB (red, green, blue) signal. Component video is designed to
provide a better quality picture than s-video.

RGB Video typically uses four or five RCA or BNC connectors at
each end of a cable consisting of four or five individual 75-ohm
coaxial cable lines within it. Again, these can be four or
five individual 75-ohm coaxial cables. (Compare RGB Video with
Component Video above, as they are often confused.) RGB video
typically describes a computer video signal, not a television
screen signal (which are typically NTSC signals or PAL signals).
RGB signals are incompatible with NTSC and PAL signals, however
special adaptors can be purchased to convert between them.
The first three lines carry the red, green, and blue signals
(the RGB signals) separately. The other two lines carry the
horizontal sync and vertical sync (which can be combined into
  one line).

Some of the confusion between composite and component, and what VCRs accept,
can come about (at least in Europe, where SCART is used) in that S-Video,
and RGB can be carried over SCART (although, usually a composite signal is
also passed).

Cheers

MD: Clie (OT)

2001-06-19 Thread Rich

This seems strange, but I'm sure there's some explaination... Why
does
the hardware (the type of Memory Stick used) affect what can be put
on it?

The white MagicGate memory sticks have some kind of security features
on-chip... I'm not sure what they are, but I'm sure Sony have tested
them! :)

have a built-in ATRAC3 decoder or something? Or is it just
a security
 thing?

Just security.

It has to be 'signed out' through their program OpenMG. Maximum of 3
signouts, so you can't just copy it to all your friends. This can
also
convert MP3s on the fly as they're being transferred, if you like
your
  music in ATRAC3 format.

So what happens if I sign out some music, which I've paid for, put
it on
a memory card, then decide that I want to use my Clie to record
something
 through the line-in?

I don't think it has a line-in (not that sophisticated! ;)). Still,
that's irrelevant...

If I repeat this two more times, am I rewarded with
a song, which I've paid for, that I can't listen to?

You get the signouts back when you sign the music back in! :)

If there's some FAQ about this, I'd like to take a look...

I don't know if there is or not... this is just stuff I've gleaned from
my research.

Not too shabby! I'll consider it when I get around to replacing my
Palm
Vx. It sounds similar to Palm's m505, which I've been drooling over
for a
while now, but with more and better features.

It definitely competes. Better (more comfortable) form factor,
incredibly superior screen (4x number of pixels, and infinitely
brighter), and Memory Stick rather than SD.
And a jog dial and dedicated DSP (you can't listen to MP3s on a 505).
There are a few downsides (it's mostly plastic and is less rugged, and
the screen's softer), but it wins out in my opinion.

The only thing I don't
like, which is the same complaint I have with all solid-state storage
devices, is the cost of the media.

It's coming down now a bit (less than $1 per MB), but that's still a
lot considering the price of MDs.
We can but wait... :)

I would imagine that it is hardware dependent as there is no real digital

Just what is the audio signal that the USB port puts out? Or is it
hardware dependent? I had a digital Xitel that I returned because it
could not constantly stream. But it seemed to me that if it did work any
audio that I played on my computer, regardless of the format would be
converted to optical PCM.

this may seem like an extreme solution, but in the end it might work out
better for ya. if you watch every once and a while someone is selling the

Re: MD: Clie (OT)

2001-06-19 Thread Rich

Sorry, that was completely unclear - maybe I should have read the
message
twice before hitting send. ;-) I should have said use my Clie to
record something in place of what I signed out. So, what happens
when
you cannot sign your music back in? Based on how I use my MD
recorder,
blowing away the data on a memory stick and recording something else
is a
likely possibility. And, as far as I can tell, this is a legitimate
use
of everything involved since I'm not copying the music to someone
else.

That's what I thought you were saying, it was clear enough so don't
berate yourself :)
As far as I'm aware, there's no way around it. But then, the MS Walkman
and Clie don't have line in, and I doubt you could record regardless.
But I definitely see the problem - maybe the files are write-protected,
and can only be restored by signing in?

I'll definately consider it. One advantage I can see for a genuine
Palm
over something else running PalmOS is expandability. I already have a
portable keyboard and the hard case for my Vx. If I got a Clie to
replace
it, I'd definately need a keyboard, which Sony doesn't seem to have
yet.
I also wouldn't mind a GPS reciever and some mapping software, which
is
available for the Vx, for when I'm on the road.

Definite advantage in an existing system. Having said that, Targus have
a stowaway keyboard out for the Clie now, Sonystyle have cases (as well
as the thousands of other cases that will fit), and Sony are working on
fingerprint recognition, GPS and camera modules for the MS slot.

Yeah, its that comparison to MD that ruins it all, isn't it? ;-)
Besides, considering how small the R900 is and how much music it can
put
on a disc, why would I want to use a handheld computer for it? (as I
try
to justify sticking with Palm and fail miserably)

Heh, that's one of the arguments both for and against.
For: I don't need to carry my 900 when I need a handheld and an hour of
music.
Against: why pay more when I have my 900?

Confuses the issue, certainly :)

In any case, this has certainly thrown a twist into my upgrade
plans. I
guess the only thing to do is wait since the Clie really appeals to
me,
but currently lacks some things that I'd have a hard time living
without.

Exactly my conclusion. It's got a jog dial, music playing, great
screen, but it's got some issues.
I suppose I'll wait for an iPAQ killer (new Psion?) with a MS slot, and
everything else to satisfy my wanton hardware lusts! :)
If you do end up getting one, maybe you'll let me or the list know? I'd
be interested in your viewpoint on it. Particularly on whether or not
low-bitrate ATRAC3 really does outperform 128kbps MP3... a thorny
subject on the Clie boards.

FreeBSD(i'm assuming you mean FreeBSD) see BSD, w/ the added support of Linux

AtheOS, yes AtheOS has support for PDF's(dog slow, but it works)

QNX - QNX RTP ships w/ phpdf

Apples OS X has built in support for PDF's both viewing and creating.

if i've missed anything i appologize but my knowledge of OS's isn't what it used to be.

plus there are many good PDF conversion tools to translage pdfs into latex, other

2001-06-19 Thread Alan Dowds

Hail to you all, minidiscers of the world.

I was in the Croydon Dixons today and bought a five-pack of Sharp *80*
minute MDs for eight quid (7.99). That's £1.60 each, the cheapest brand name
80 min discs I've seen so far, especially in those quantities.

I'm going to buy more!

Al.

Wouldn't it be great to have an MD player like that?

When was the last time someone on this m-list purchased
a Cassette walkman ? Are they still very popular ?
They are still on the shelves but I don't know anyone
who has bought one in the last 3 years. Perhaps
parents still buy them for their kids? shrug

I haven't had a walkman in a long time, but the last one I owned was this
really spanky Sony. It was a cassette/radio player, barely larger than the
cassette itself. When the casssette was removed, the whole thing could
slide down into itself about an inch and a half. Very cool bit of
engineering, I've never seen it since.

RE: MD: MD FAQ

2001-06-19 Thread Richard Lang

 marc
(who has nothing against the current faq's, but thinks we can get ALOT
more info going)

Then may I suggest you send the extra information to Rick Woudenberg who can
add it to the existing MDCP FAQs.

It's up to you guys to do whatever you want, of course, but I don't see the
point of re-inventing the wheel. The MDCP at www.minidisc.org is the most
informative, best organised, and best updated maintained MD resource that
I'm aware of anywhere on the internet, probably anywhere in the printed
English language.

Isn't it simplest just to be able to go to that one resource and see - or be
linked to - everything MD related? Why supplant what MDCP already does? To
be honest the suggestion seems a little ungracious and unfair to the work
that Rick Woudenberg et al have done with MDCP.

An earlier post suggested that everyone on MD-L should get together to
create the FAQ. It's a nice idea, given the expertise lurking on the list -
but I suspect (from previous experience on collaborative projects too
numerous to mention) that it won't that easy. If everyone actually does
get involved, there will ultimately be differences as to what
should/shouldn't be in the FAQ, what the facts are on certain things are
etc. Ultimately you will need an editor, and Rick already does that - and
with his not insignificant experience.

Don't take this as a flame - your intentions are great, guys - but when you
look at MDCP, it seems better to me to put the effort into perfecting the
existing resource than duplicating/competing with it

One final comment I would make is perhaps that the initial subscription
e-mail to MD-L have a link to the MDCP FAQ, or perhaps have atop ten FAQ
in it? That might deal with the MD-L issues...

RE: MD: Mironics computer interface

2001-06-19 Thread Wesleyan Hsu

I purchased their product and am reasonably pleased with it. Although I am
an experienced software developer, I have not worked at the hardware level
so I can't give a fair assessment as to how difficult it is to write your
own software. My guess is that it would be difficult as the timing of
commands sent to the dongle would be somewhat critical (I highly doubt the
dongle has a command buffer). The unit does work as advertised, but I have
seen numerous glitches, some of which were caused by my lack of
understanding of what was truly going on. Others, simply unexplainable. My
only guess is because of timing issues between the software and my MZ-R900.

The current software is functional but very poor as far as usability goes.
I've spoken with the designer and he tells me that a new version should be
out shortly which includes numerous new features. I've inquired if he would
consider wrapping the engine/driver in an ActiveX control so that people
like me could write my own custom software to suit my needs. He blatantly
ignored that question.

I am also under the impression that the hardware he is selling is different
than the DIY instructions he first posted on his web site. The site implied
that the commercial unit supported more features.

means that for the price, they are a horrible deal ;)

I am looking for very high quality sound and wonder what you would
recommend.

As I mentioned in a post a few days ago, before we can recommend anything,
you need to answer a few questions:

1) Do you have a preference in terms of earbud vs. circumaural (on-the-ear)
vs. supra-aural (around-the-ear) headphones?

2) Do you want open or closed headphones? In other words, do you want
'phones that block out external sound and keep your music from disturbing
others? Or do you want to be able to hear the outside world? Keep in mind
that in *general* open cans sound better.

3) Do you have any preferences in terms of how you like your music to sound?
Accurate? More bass? More treble?

If you answer these, we can help you pick some really great 'phones for your
budget.

Personally I prefer the closed type. Especially at work. :) They do an
excellent job of blocking out ambient noise. Definitely wouldn't wear them
while driving, and you definitely have to be more aware of your environment
when out and about walking and such. :)

Hi all, don't know if this has been seen before, but it seems like a pretty
good deal, soundcard with coax SPDIF, optical SPDIF and even an MD optical
