MD: CompUSA deal on Sound Foundry Software

2000-11-02 Thread Jerry Jelinek

Hi all,

I know this is not MD topic, but thought all of the MD to CDR fans would
be interested in this.

At the local (Beachwood, Oh.) CompUSA, they have a Sound Foundry bundle
for an incredible price of $7.88.

The bundle includes Sound Forge XP4.5b, along with Sound Foundry ACID loop
maker.

Sound Forge XP4.5b is a scaled down version of the Sound Forge Pro version
that costs hundreds of dollars. For transferring MD to hard disk and
ultimately CD audio, the program works great. Sound Forge XP has
compression (called dynamics). It has has very detailed editing
features. I highly recommend the program.

The Sound Foundry ACID program enables you to make music loops using
pieces parts. The musical styles are definately more rock and industrial
styles. Not my personal favorites, but for the job, does an excellent job
at making background musical loops for presentations or background for
radio stations etc.

FYI,

Jerry

I use martin Danek's fine Winremote program.Once the program is setup,
you can get titles from CDDB for CDs, and you can cut and past raw text
from other sources, along with manually typing in titles via a keyboard.

Martin also does a fine job of supporting his product. The only drawback
is it only uses Sony decks via the IR input.

Hope this helps,

Mike,

I'm writing this without reading about 4 or 5 MD digests, so the answer to
your problem may have been resolved by now. I know that is a mortal sin
in listserve communities, but heck I just blew off about 5 digests that
had nothing to do with MD so I'll probably end up in purgatory instead of
hell.

Ok, I've used the 702 and Core Sound Mics for many concerts over the last
2 years. Have had nothing but great results with the setup.

For louder jazz concerts (~90-110db) I use the mic input on the 702 and
have the level set around 9 out of a possible 30.

For softer jazz concerts, I'll be in the 12-15 range. For very small
classical string ensembles I'm usually set at 15-20. Any only once did I
have to get into the 20-25 range and that was a solo piano and solo violin
recital I attended.

As Martin had suggested, check the power of your battery. That is the
most likely cause of the low volume. As far as clicks or pops in the
recording, I've not noticed anything in mine.

The Sharp 702 that I have has a known artifact that when your changing the
recording level from above '18' down to or below '18', the machine will
drop out of recording for about 1/10 of a second. You get a very nice
blank space in the recording. :( That has been documented before. I'm
just very careful when I have to record softer events.

Hope this helps,

Jerry

Let's see... if you had songs like that (40 characters long,

Well I regularily have 40-50 tracks per CD. In fact I fit 5 complete
mono jazz LPs on 1 minidisc earlier this year. If I remember it had
over 60 tracks on the disc.

But the 40 limit is nothing new to me for the number of tracks on a disc.

One of the biggest features on MD for me is mono recording for old mono
jazz LPs.

I'm not aware of any with multiple analog inputs. For switching of
multiple analog sources, I'd go to Radio Shack and get an analog A-B
switcher for stereo switching.

If you want multiple digital inputs, Sony has them. My JB920 has 2 coax
digital and 1 optical digital inputs. It also has optical and coax
digital outputs.

Hope this helps,

MD: Family Archives on Minidisc

1999-11-29 Thread Jerry Jelinek

Someone last week had mentioned using the MD format for recording family
members talking.

I want to thank that person. About 12 years ago, I had recorded my
grandmother talking about your childhood etc. on betamax video tape, then
transferred that to cassette tape. A quality result was generated in
that.

But this year at the US celbrated Thanksgiving, I brought my trusty Sharp
702 along with my Core Sound Binaurual Mics over to my parents. While my
father and aunt leafed over pictures, lots of family stories came up and
of course all of this dialog is now archived on MD!!

I strongly encourage EVERYONE to do something similar over the holiday
season. If you're like me, hearing your family members discuss family
history is really informative and fun.

As always, MD continues to amaze me in all of its functionality.

Re: MD: Transferring MD to CD

1999-11-23 Thread Jerry Jelinek

"Martin Schiff" [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

Is there any software out there that makes it easier to transfer a MD to a
CD including splitting the tracks on the CD to match the MD?.

Martin,

I have a similar setup to yours. A Sony JB920, Sharp 702, Sound Blaster
Live with Hoontech Dig I/O board. I agree it is a tedious process to
take a MD and burn a CD from it. I'm not aware of any software that
would automatically create seperate wav files for each track on the MD.

Ideally, if the computer could read in the MD while it is playing and
create seperate wav files automatically for each track, that would be
great.

From previous discussions on the MD Listserve, I seem to recall a
conversation that the DIG I/O boards on the market, somehow strip the bit
which sends a track mark. Even if the track mark were sent, the software
reading the digital data would have to create seperate wav files after
each track mark.

I also recall hearing from an add for the DAT Store about a Marantz Pro CD
burner that would accept track marks from a digital source (MD or CD) and
place the track marks accordingly. I can neither confirm or deny this
product.

Hope this helps,

Jerry

Re: MD: concert recording

[EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

i recorded a concert tonight on my 722, and 95% of the songs, the ones that
had heavy base were not recorded satisfactorily. ATRAC could not handle
heavy base: all parts with base sound like digital noise, which completely
drowned out all other frequency bands.

That sounds more like a problem with the mics you were using. I do a lot
of concert archiving in classical and jazz events and have been extremely
satisfied with the recordings I've made.

I'm not into heavy bass oriented rock concerts, so I can't offer direct
help. But both Core Sound and Sound Professionals offer mics with bass
roll off.

That might help you out,

Jerry

MD: Trouble with MD Digests???

1999-09-02 Thread Jerry Jelinek

Hi all,

I subscribe to the MD-L in digest form. Today something rather wierd
happened. I received about 6 or 7 old digests with dates from July and
August. Did anyone else get these old digests?

Is the digest version a bit messed up?

Re: MD: Re: A couple of questions from a new 702 user...

1999-08-25 Thread Jerry Jelinek

Regarding mono recording on the 702:

On last thing: I noticed (again in the manual) that it states that mono
recordings made on the unit won't play in other units.

This statement is incorrect. I regularily record in mono on my 702, both
from digital and analog inputs. I have not had one problem in playing a
702 mono recorded disc on a Sony 510, Sony JB920, Sony MZ-E40 or another
Sharp 702.

This is both
contrary to what I've heard about the MD standard and what I've witnessed
playing mono (and mono/stereo mix) discs in my two Sony units... Are
there any MD units out there that *won't* play mono discs?

I'm not aware of any units that will not play mono discs. From memory,
the mono playing is part of the MD standard going back to the begining.

Mitch,

I have a Sony deck and Martin Danek's Winremote program works great in
