MD: Skipping of home recorded discs

2001-04-23 Thread Edwin Carter

Apologies if any of this has been discussed before - I can't find anything
in the archives...

I have a Sony DHC-MD373 mini-deck which I've been very satisfied with
apart from one thing. Quite a few minidiscs I've recorded play back with
a persistent intermittent skipping (or rather the sound stops briefly for
short moments); it gets increasingly bad through the track.
Further diagnosis points:
 - the discs all play back perfectly fine on my portable player
 - the glitches are always in roughly the same places on the tracks
 - all have been recorded from analogue sources (i.e. cassette or radio)
 - the same problem occurs with two brands of MD (Maxell and Sony)
 - I think the problem's never happened on a new disc, but it does
still happen after a total erase.

Can anyone give me any advice on whether this is a problem with my
particular unit (and is it likely to be repairable if I take it back)?
Or is this sort of skipping something one gets sometimes with minidiscs
generally?
The unit is under guarantee, but I'm disinclined to return it if it might
be only, say, dodgy discs which are only playing all right on my portable
because of its anti-shock memory...

Any comments at all would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Edwin Carter

I had this problem (still do) but only for certain disks.
I also had problems when recording from a digital source where
it added loads of trackmarks and did not copy correctly.

I thought it was dodgy discs at the time but after reading a lot
of replies from the people on the list here I am inclined to believe
that its the Equipment that could be doing damage to the disc.
dont know how/why or how to stop it.

The disks that have the problems also play fine on my portable (MZR-91)
but my Deck (Sony S-38) Id say has seen its final days.
(It also has the phantom eject glitch)

Sorry I could not of been any help but at least you know your not the only
one with that problem.

The exact same thing happened with one of my previous portable players.
Eventually I went for another model, and it went away. The skipping is not
normal. I have only found it on one recorder, and never again.

Hmm, MiniDisc cases that slide onto your belt can be got from Dixions,
I've got mine here, it's called Swordfish and made out wet suit stuff
;).

Mines for my Sharp 722, have a look at your local one and see if they
have one.

That is why they sell the belts that you can put a MD in and wear it
 around your waist.

Where can you get these things!!?? I've looked all over the place for
them.

Wouldn't you just use any pouch of that kind (choose one that's the size you
need, of course)? I didn't think the "belt" reference was talking about any
MD-specific "belts".

Just a generic (whatever you call them!?) bumbags? pouches?

MD: Skipping on MD's

2000-03-22 Thread L K

Hi all,

I bought a JVC XM-PX5 md player from hongkong just
over 2 months ago. And i'm quite happy with its size
and weight. however, i'd just like to ask about how
much other Md players skip when walking. basically i
find that my player skips *A LOT*
normally i just keep it in my trouser pocket, and i
dont believe i walk fast, but in my larger pockets,
the md does swing a lot, and even walking on flat
ground, the md skips, and stops playing until i take
it out and just hold it when i walk. i find if i hold
it in my hand while walking or running then its fine,
only when i have it in my pocket does it skip.
is there anything i should do that can stop it
skipping so much?
or is my md just not working right?

thanks

Don't carry it in trouser pockets where it has area to move. The
movement throws the laser off.

Ok, maybe I'm wrong, but my portable does the same thing.

MD: Skipping

2000-03-22 Thread James Jarvie

I have the Sharp MT-15, which only has a 10-second
buffer. I put the unit in my shirt pocket and it
never skips. In fact, I am really enjoying the
portability of this format (which was not one of the
things about MD that first attracted me). I actually
try to wear shirts with pockets on days that I am
going to listen to the MD.

Also, on the topic of growing tired of favorite
recordings...this has happened to me occasionally.
Compilations are wonderful, though. And the neat
thing about them (and MD) is that you can redo the
compilations. Add a few different songs...change the
order. Sometimes just keeping it fresh will help.
Also, don't be afraid to put a recording away for 6
months. I have found that when you "rediscover" it,
it's almost like when you first purchased the disc. I
have some discs (many of which are favorites) that I
only hear once a year...and even some that I go more
than a year between playing.

Best regards,

James
(who is really enjoying his MDs, and thanks everyone
on this list for there help in deciding to enter the
MD world last November)

Re: MD: Skipping on MD's

Hi there,

JR Moore and the others are right. On a post not too long ago, I mentioned
how leaving a MD player in your trouser pockets will make it skip,
regardless of its capabilities.

If you'd rather keep it in your pocket, try this. Do things so that the MD
player doesn't wobble around in your pocket. For example, attaching the
battery case. Do everything you can so it absolutely stuffs the pocket.

Shirt pockets are also great, but since on the PX5 unit | and | buttons
double as volume control, it may be a little annoying to operate.

Check http://www.insflug.org/slink/potential/integration/. The
ideas stated there, and its potential is what makes MD my favorite media
for enjoying music in my car or portable without getting sick of hearing
always the same, or even bother to make "manual" or "conscious"
compilations.

MD: Skipping on recorded MD's from early model

1999-12-02 Thread Robert Dorsett

Hello,

About a year ago, I purchased a used Sony MDS-302 which worked fine but the
MD's recorded on this model skipped, mostly at the first track, when played
on a new portable player (Sony MZ-E25). The skipping symptoms were dropped
music (dead spots where silence was heard instead of music), a quick
movement from one area of the song to another (as if it was sped up
momentarily) and very slow cueing when play was initiated. Almost all the
time, MD's recorded on the 302 played fine on itself. Infrequently, it
would skip on its own recordings.

I took the 302 unit to the Sony Service Center and they replaced the
optics. The problem persisted. I thought it was bad MD stock but tests with
a friend's new MD recorder disproved that theory. The skipping problem does
not occur all the time. I cannot see a pattern. It does seem to be more
prevalent with certain kinds of MD stock and is related, almost always, to
the first track.

The only conclusion I can draw is a slight incompatibility between the
older 302 unit and the newer models. Perhaps something with the Table of
Contents?

Had anyone else encountered this phenomena?

Thanks.

It sounds like maybe the sled that carries the optical block could be
sticking at the inner end of it's travel.
It could also be temperature related - extreme cold or heat causing more
errors...
It's probably worth taking it back to Sony and explain that it is still
not fixed and emphasis the fact that the problem is always with track
one...
IMHO, it's not a compatibility problem
