My firm in jello schedule is:
I'm doing Timing for ProAutoSport event in St. Johns over Labor Day 
weekend and then I'll shove off on Tuesday early AM from St. Johns, AZ.

Tues  9/6 - Amarillo, TX  517 miles
Wed   9/7 - Hot Springs, AR  580 miles
Thurs 9/8 - Oak Ridge, TN (That could possibly be Nashville)  562 miles
Fri  9/9 - Danville, VA  325 miles

I need to get into Danville early enough to have my track tires mounted 
and balanced.  I used RandMcNally.com and basically following I-40E.  
Want to do about 550 miles/day.  Any suggestions for stops would be 
welcomed or if anybody else is along the route.  Let's try to hook 
up.


This internet route planning and map stuff ain't all it's cracked up to 
be..  I'd like to input start and destination and miles/day and let 
technology tell me where I the stops can/should be.

Mine was un-touched. I didn't want to go prying apart the wrong thing 
so I compared it to my 84 which had the ALDA adjusted.I pried the 
little plastic cap off with a pair of gasket picks and then grabbed the 
thin metal with a pair of needlenose pliers and rolled it off like a 
sardine can lid.   I've adjusted it half a turn and it drives better 
and still no smoke.


What IS the proper adjustment?   keep turning anti-clockwise (as the 
brits say) until 


Is this alda thing related to the altitude compensator?  perhaps they 
are one and the same?

Memphis,TN it would be...  but during the week and being a student its 
really hard to take off (oh how I wish for sick days at school...).  If 
your plans put you around Memphis on a weekend (maybe on the way back?) 
That shouldn't be a problem.


MS Streets and Trips does just what you want.  How many miles a day, start 
time, end time, will put you asleep in places where there actually are 
hotels, etc.  Only thing is I don't think there is a Mac version, and it 
does cost money ;) ($30).  Thats about all the trip planning features 
though... anybody know of some software that is excellent for trip 
planning (stay at this resort for this time frame, stop at Grand Canyon 
for x hours, etc)

I turned it until I started getting smoke under hard accelleration, then
backed off slightly.  I ended up with about 1-1/2 turns
counter-clockwise from its original position.  This made a *huge*
difference in off-the-line accelleration.

yes, I really do kick myself for not keeping that 84 I picked up with 
the bad head gasket.  Considering I drive anywhere from 150 to 250 miles 
per day, it would have been nice(was an auto though).

Mercedes points out that 25-30 psi (actually 2 bar) is required in

The ALDA monitors intake manifold pressure and adjusts fuel enrichment 
according to the avaiable pressure. That allows MORE fuel as boost 
increases and less fuel as altitude increases. It usually takes 1 1/2-1 
3/4 turns to reach optimal enrichment. Too far and the engine will start 
smoking at heavy load when rpm gets over 4000 rpm.


While it really requires that the pump be removed and adjusted on a test 
stand to accurately set the ALDA you can get pretty close by monitoring 
exhaust color (as seen in the rear view mirror on a SUNNY day). There 
should be barely visible wisps of smoke visible in the mirror when the 
pedal is floored, the car under full load and the rpm over 4000 rpm.

An auto will only give you 35-38 mpg.

There is no why..  Just reinforces the old saw that there is 
nothing more dangerous than ignorance in action.  I just picked the 
largest town that RandMcNally provided along the route.


It would make sense to stay as close to I-40 as possible.  These 
computer maps are wonderful, but I think I'm going to get several 
real maps..  And work out things a bit better the old fashioned 
way.  Just a Luddite at heart.
I'm guessing that I would be thru there on Wednesday 9/7  Will try 
to make a meeting work

That does not make much sense- A turbo heat wrap?  The diesel exhaust does 
not get that hot to begin with and this stuff could cause the oil and bearing 
in 
the turbo to run hotter.  Plus this crazy intake system with that small air 
filter could not possibly breath as well as the big stock filter?  It also 
takes in hot air from the engine bay instead of cool outside air as the stock 
setup does.  His oil reclaim system looks too small to work well... Who 
knows...  
I bet this stuff works as well as the fuel saving magnets  -Dan

Sorry to hear it! Car sure looks beautiful otherwise.

Yes, there sure could be damage to the tranny, as 
well as the frame and the whole driveline. You 
really need to take it into a body and frame shop 
experienced with MBZs and have them thoroughly 
check out the whole car and give you an estimate. 
talk to your insurance company right away and 
have them go after the party who hit you. Save 
all your receipts for your recent work.

Maybe some of you remember that my '82 240D was in
accident a few months ago. I just got it fixed and had
the entire car and the hub caps painted. A family
friend who is in body shop business did it for me and
it was a very nice job. It was like a NEW car until
this morning it was rear-ended in a multi-car
accident. I just couldn't believe it!

I should say I should feel lucky because I was on my
way to work after dropping off my children so it was
just me in the car. It was a low speed crash (20 mph)
and I didn't seem to have any apparent injuries. I am
going to see my doctor Friday. I guess if there is any
delayed symptoms I will know by then.

The driver at the end of the chain reaction
(supposedly at fault by Police report) was arrested
for driving with suspended license and careless
driving. I was told by the witness later that the
driver and passenger (either sisters or
mother/daughter relationship) in that car got out and
swapped seats immediately after the accident happened.
I thought the car behind me (Chevy 1500) hit me first
and the arrested driver hit the Chevy then after but I
guess police found the fault all at the arrested
driver or I really didn't know how it happened.

Here are pictures of the damage. Maybe some of you can
tell me where to look for places with hidden damages
if you have experience with this. It appears the
bumper got pushed down and forward and the quater
panel went along with it.

My transmission (4-speed manual) now behaves a little
funny with some delay between shift. It was in gear
when the was rear-ended. Could there be any damage to
the transmission and possibly the engine?

I try not to think about this for now but eventually I
will have to deal with the insurance agonies - the
owner of the car at fault has the insurance from a
company called Direct Insurance.

Well now that is a piece of kit that promises to nicely complement the other
useless thing in the first pic, the K  N cylinder wall sandblaster.

The turbo performance crowd use heat wraps on their bling bling cars. I
really don't see it making a shred of difference on a daily driver
turbodiesel, unless you routinely pound the daylights out of it all day in
stop and go driving in a really hot environment.

For those guys who build up their turbodiesels, however, like the GM and
Ford pickup performance crowd, I could see it making some sense.

I think it's the red rattle can spray paint that really increases 
performance, but probably not as good as some neon color, maybe with 
some blue LEDs to light it up, and an R sticker too...

Kevin,

Maybe use a screwdriver to push the lip out of place.  Alex may be
right, the door panel may need to be removed to move the wires to get
enough slack.  Just use some new wire and some crimp butt joints to
repair.

 There's no trick as far as I know.  I've never had any trouble pulling 
 the accordion-thing loose on my 124s.  It's just a friction fit.  The

 BTW, I've also found that you almost always DO need to pull the door 
 panel and loosen the clips holding the wires to the door in order to 
 fix them... there just isn't enough slack to work with otherwise.  Good 
 time to lube the window and lock mechanisms, clean the seat switch

You are correct, the ALDA is an altitude compensator, as well as a boost  
fuel compensator.  Marshall's description of what to look for is right  on.  . 
 
 I have found that most ALDAs run out of travel about 1 3/4 to 2  turns, CCW 
from their factory location.  As you turn the screw you will  feel a marked 
increase in resistance, just before you twist off the adjusting  screw.  'Nuff 
said?
 
Some of us feel that the ALDA can no longer add fuel after about 2  turns 
anyway, due to the over riding, restrictive action of the full load  screw.  
That 
topic has recently been discussed on this list but may  add a considerable 
risk of piston seizure under heavy loads.   Consider that a MB diesel is set up 
with less than 0.001 inches of piston  clearance, compared to a race engine  
which may be a loose 0.004.

the cash, make your car pretty and sell it on their site.  A Gump type 
is up to 2k euro, some fool has a fintail out of CA for 21k euro.  I do 
not think Kalebs cars will fetch that, but maybe the more polished 
ones, in good condition.


Maybe that fellow in CA who snags the diesel and tries to sell them 
here with vegie conversion is taking the vergassers and putting them in 
container for the fatherland!

The best part about this is that having a hot engine bay is beneficial to
the engine. Anyone who has taken thermodynamics and heat transfer would know
that the hotter an engine runs, the more efficient it is. The only think you
would want to be cold is the air going into the engine because it is more
dense. The whole idea behind this is silly...

A long time ago in a converted orange grove a crazy man built a 
wonderful world so as to strip $$$ from unsuspecting people.  He called 
it Disneyland.


Today, you just bend over and allow them to suck the $$$ right out of

The original scam was to take a small fee to allow you in, and then 
provide you with a ticket book, to redeem said tickets at rides.  The 
lame rides used A and B tix.  The more interesting attractions took a C 
or D.  For the really hot and desired things, like Matterhorn or Space 
mountain, you redeemed the rare E ticket which lived in the back of the 
booklet.  You could also combine some of the lame tix to equal the E, 
but if  you had small kids in the pack, some poor fool had to ride the 
vomit inducing tea cups, or Dumbo, and squander some of the upgrading.


Knowing that lots of people would like the E ticket rides, you could go 
back and buy yet another ticket book, ad infinitum until Dad was about 
to smack you, or enough people got cranky and the fireworks began.


The one upside of this scheme was that the tickets were negotiable 
paper, and valid the next time  you went.  My uncle, who lived in the 
area had a desk drawer full of partial books of tix, still made us buy 
our own.

I remember reading about somebody who looked at a SL up for auction
and found it an incredible turd. He started emailing the bidders
and warning them. In the end, some fool Dutchman won the auction, so
he paid more than the car was worth for shipping alone.

Mitch,

I think that it is possible for this car to get pretty close to 110 mph, 
certainly it will exceed 100.  My '85 wagon with 320k miles on it, with same 
engine and transmission as this car, has reached an indicated 107 mph in 5th 
gear (will go faster in 4th gear but I didn't know that before and haven't had 
an opportunity to find out how much faster since).  I've reason to think that 
my speedometer is pretty accurate, but I haven't 'calibrated' it against GPS 
yet.  If the EGR valve has been disabled, a reasonable estimate is a gain of 
~5hp (comparing info from '85 TDM for engine power figures in countries that 
didn't require EGR - they got an extra ~5hp).  The sedan will be lighter than 
my wagon (lighter still than a US spec car which has an automatic transmission 
and heavier bumpers).

Also, do I see an ABS pump in the engine bay?

Unfortunately, the car is beginning to rust - I think I see bubble on the 
leading edge of the RR fender, and there is a rust stain on the front bumper.  
Also, the jack points look a little ragged - very hard to tell in the poor 
lighting conditions used to photograph the car so that it is very tough to see 
the lower body parts.

Will be fun to see how much it goes for!

The valley hitch at Hitches 4 less says it is USA Spec only.  That leads me 
to believe there is some difference under the car.  There was a huge 
difference under our Euro 123 1984 wagon and our US 123 1985 wagon.  I 
never knew is it was  EUro vs USA, gas vs diesel, or 1984 vs 1985 or some 
combination of variables

If you are going through W Memphis (AR), get off at Missouri Blvd -- it 
is a fairly large exit, lots of gas stations, truck stops there.  Go 
about a mile south and across from a Wendy's/Backyard Burger, next to a 
Citgo? station and a bank I think, is Ray's BBQ, in a little strip mall 
shop on the west side of the street.  He gots some mighty fine pigmeat Q 
in there, for Memphis style.  I stopped there once to get gas, smelled 
the Q, followed my nose, stop there whenever I get through that part of 
the country.  I recall fuel being cheaper there than in TN.

MS Streets and Trips does just what you want.  How many miles a day,

planning features though... anybody know of some software that is 
excellent for trip planning (stay at this resort for this time 
frame, stop at Grand Canyon for x hours, etc)

You adjust the ALDA richer until you can't feel any more power gain
off idle. This may produce a small puff of smoke leaving a stop, which
is normal. Adjusting the ALDA may NEVER produce more smoke at WOT so
don't bother looking for that. If you adjust it too far, you'll just
be wasting fuel.

Guys,

Here is a 1967 Mercedes 200D 4 Door registered to a RL Pender  Associates in 
Weston, FL.  The tag shows June of 99 Expiration but DMW shows it was renewed 
in 1999 and 2000 with an expiration of June 2001.

It is sitting near Ormond Beach, FL and available for free to a good home.  My 
son Scott, tells me it has some body rust.  But, engine and most everything 
else seems intact.  It has been sitting for awhile.  Would be a very good parts 
car for someone.  Title not available.

It would be good to find this old beauty a home (other than a junk yard).

My niece, Tracy Matthews lives near this car.  She can be reached at:  
386-677-5714 work,  386-615-1773 home, or  386-233-0420 cell.

I read somewhere that they changed it between 83 and 84.   It 
definitely feels different.   the 84 will jump off the line,  even 
chirp.   The 83 won't even come close.  (even with the ALDA fixed)

My browser was out of commission for a few
days...sorry to resurrect, but I've never used the
bolt assist. I forget the exact story, but when the
originals came out (without cleaning kits and the
silly claim that they didn't need cleaning, it was
probably necessary) - interestingly, the airforce
ordered first without assist. Army insisted on it. By
now it is no more necessary than on any other auto
rifle, but like the fire extinguisher in the trunk,
can come in handy if you really muck things up - mud,
etc. If you keep the ejection port door closed, you
should never need it, unless you drop it in the
mud...even then, I bet you wouldn't need it all the
time.

Looks like a fun car.  One of a kind if it was brought to the US.  It looks 
like the badge is 250SD   (2.0)  Now a quick accelerating car, but fun.  I 
have spares for both body and engine.  Anybody wanna buy it and ship it 
here for me?  I'll drive it.  It would make a good parade car.

I'd consider doing a valley hitch if they'd make one with a two inch

they'll do is a cheesy smaller one, I'll just stick to using the colony 
park or country squire if I want to use a wagon, or one of the jeeps, or even
the powerchoke.

I'm hoping Tan's shifter problem is a binding linkage from the engine/tranny 
shifting
rearward in the crash. He does have a nice crimp in the rear unibody though.

Yeah, I see. Mine has 260k miles on the motor and
trans so they are probably no better than what Don's
got. The 4-speed may have some worth I guess. Actually
the body is in an exceptionally rust-free
condition(spent its life in GA and FL) and that was
the reason I decided to paint the whole car when it
was sideswiped a few months ago. Supprisingly State
Farm (my insurance company) appraised the car at over
$5,000 so they sent me a check $3200-$500(my
deductible) to fix the sideswipe damage. I was
thinking they would have totaled the car. 

How difficult is it for the body shop to fix the
damage with the frame and you all's guess on the cost?
State Farm's adjuster already looked at the car so I
have an estimate. If it becomes too much hassle to
have it resolved with other insurance companies I may
just let State Farm handle it. My friend who did the
paint job for me last time still has about 1 pint of
paint that could be used this time.

Please understand, Tan, it isn't hard at all to pull out the frame where it
has buckled and straighten the rear of the car. I hope I did not make it
sound that way. Any competent collision shop can repair that car.

I just wanted to warn you of how the other insurer may handle it, so you go
in prepared. My point is that the insurers don't like to spend time on any
file, especially on an older (and from their point of view) rare car. The
world of insurance does not work on common sense, it works on actuarial
tables, assumptions and rules (that is my take, anyway).

Also, bear in mind that the price YOU will pay to fix that, has no relation
to what a shop will price it out as, for an insurance company. My guess,
based on seeing how it works here in Canada, would be a difference of 1.5x
to 2x or even more.

I would not hesitate to repair and drive your car, in fact I now drive a car
that was repaired after a rear impact much worse than that.

The 290GD has the NA 2.5L OM602 motor. Coupled with
the 5-speed manual transmission it is a very reliable
SUV if you don't mind the slow acceleration!

I'm pulling numbers out of thin air, but saying the car is faster in
fourth could be the same as saying it makes more power at 5000 rpm
than at 4000 rpm. I once had a car that could pull redline in 4th,
(800 rpm faster than peak hp) or go the same speed within one or
two mph in 5th (around 600 or 800 rpm below the power peak). That 
car would have been faster with different gearing.
