I'm a newbie and for me it was WELL worth the money.
Things are explained very simply and you learn about
how the car works...you read it and start making a
list of all the stuff you want to do!
For the diesel veteran, it might not be worth the
monye. I would recommend it to any newbie.

[MBZ] Bouncy SLS on my wagon ('85 300TD)

2005-07-27 Thread meadedillon
Richard,

Yes, I have to step and lower the mast each time I launch. Rather a hassle,
makes the power boat crowd very curious (but usually they're too polite to
stare and point), and I'm still working on refining the process to get the time
required more reasonable. I once did it in 30 minutes, when helped by a very
experienced sailor.

Joe,

Yes, I personally have removed the rear springs with no compressor of any kind.
That was in conjunction with complete removal of the rear axle (carrier, swing
arms, differential, the whole deal). Basically, I supported the car body front
and rear on a lift, and held the rear axle up with a massive air jack that was
built into the rack. Removed all the connections holding the axle to the body,
and lowered the air jack to release the pressure on the springs. Installation
was reverse. I was pretty nervous, but it went very smoothly and without
drama, and I'd do it again with the same equipment.

My 1979 300SD did not have a filter in it, which is strange considering
some fool had to remove it and then decide not to put it back or buy
a new one.

Could be a slight leak at one injector or a lazy glow plug. 800 miles is
pretty good for that mileage. I wouldn't touch anything.

Losing (through consumption and leaking) about a quart in 800 miles right now.
Thats improving as the external leaks slowly dry up (using Mobil 1). The thing
is I only get the blast of smoke (it could be blue, its hard to tell) first
thing in the morning, none of the start ups during the day show it.

Depends on what you mean by a fair bit of oil.
I find that my SD leaks out as much oil as it uses ( which isn't that
much ) and neither warrant fixing.

Have you checked the injection pump timing and chain stretch? A simple
drip tube works pretty well to time the pump. Black smoke would be
unburned fuel..

Don't even think about a 617 powertrain in a W124. Either fix the
engine or get a used 606 motor to drop in. If you're a glutton for
punishment, a 603 turbo powertrain would work, but getting things like
the cruise control to function might be a real trick. A 606 turbo
would be the holy grail but that would take tons of custom work and
probably a Myna-Diesel massaged manual injection pump ($1500) and
elimination of almost all the computer controls. Would be lots of fun,
but not easy nor cheap.

2005-07-27 Thread Richard Hattaway
Nope, don't have it. I so far have gotten away without needing one,
but I guess the time will come someday that I have to have that tool.

Do you drop the mast on each takedown? So far I have not had to do
that, and it has made sailing more enjoyable. I kept my boat at a
club for years that allowed 'dry sailing' and had clearance to drag the
boat to the water w/o tree inteference (most of the time). Then about
10 years ago I bought a place that had a ramp in the back, so the mast
still can stay up with the boat on the trailer.

My Highlander is a 20 foot boat as well, sloop rigged, with no
appreciable weight in the centerboard. The whole boat is 850 pounds or
so. The main is huge, so sailing upwind in 15 knots is exciting, to
say the least, even with three on the rail. I plan to sell it someday
soon, as I need something that is much more tame. I've owned the boat
for ~15 years, and it is time for someone younger to learn to sail (c:
..

I sailed a Hunter 170 a while back. 17 foot sloop w/ open transom.
Looks like a minature Melges racing sloop. It was a blast. Small,
easy to handle, *very* responsive, and relatively inexpensive. I will
be looking for one someday.

Good luck on the bouncy wagon, Bruckman has been my guide on all my
issues. Keep us posted on your progress...

In both our cars (of different makes and vastly
different ages and miles), within a month of
eachother? That would seem to suggest a fuel problem,
but Bill said the fuel tested out fine, and lots of
other people are buying the same fuel and it's a
pretty tight knit BD community here in Oly - you'd
think word would get around if there was a problem w/
the fuel (I certainly spread the word after our TDI
incident). Plus, the word on the TDIclub forum is
that this is actually not that uncommon of a problem,
and not just w/ BD, only somewhat more frequently w/
BD. (Though unscientific, the impression I got from
the geographic origin of the comments is that the
problem is more prevalent in warmer climes,
reinforcing the suspicion that it's a heat induced
problem.) Plus at least two other pro-BD "local"
mechanics are using Viton (Dave of Dave and Zane's and
Dr. Dan) so not every "expert" around here appears to
share your belief that all is well and good w/ the
stock equipment. All this said, if your still
interested in looking over my rig, I'd certainly
appreciate the input.

[MBZ] Bouncy SLS on my wagon ('85 300TD)

2005-07-27 Thread meadedillon
Richard,

I'm not sure what class it is, it is 20 ft long with a sloop rig. Really a
very enjoyable boat, and so far the cost has been reasonable. My wife and I
are really having fun with it, just wish the heat and humidity would become
more reasonable. The set-up and take-down cycles each take about 45 minutes,
which typically leaves me drenched in sweat. I've got to get one of those
'shower-in-a-bag' deals to hang from the mast so that I can rinse off and cool
down before jumping in the car that has no AC.

David Bruckman has provided the enlightenment I needed, and your info confirms
that, so I'm going to get some new spheres. I've already got a rebuild kit in
hand, and some spare Febi fluid, just need to find the time to do it.

You don't happen to have the spring compressor? Use of that special tool might
be enough to tempt me to make the trip, as I'd love to put in thicker spring
pads to increase ride height.

[MBZ] 76 300D questions

2005-07-27 Thread R A Bennell
Hopefully easily answered by someone who knows.

What am I supposed to use for power steering fluid? Is it AT fluid and if
so, basic GM type fluid? I stuck my finger in it and that is certainly what
it appears to be.

Second question - on the side of the resevoir there is a line which I assume
marks the appropriate level. Is this the right level hot or cold? My level
seems a bit low (an inch or more below the line) but I am reluctant to
overfill it.

engine or get a used 606 motor to drop in.

I suppose it's conceivable that you could have a restriction in the
return circuit (blockage or kinked return line) which could create a
pressure build-up causing those tiny lines to leak. They're push-on
lines cuz usually that's a relatively low pressure circuit.

2005-07-27 Thread Dave M.
Jay,

while I'm not sure about your specific model, all the other W124's
turn the fans on low speed based on refrigerant *pressure* - on at 16
bar, off at 12 bar. So they may only run part of the time, but should
usually be running most of the time if it's warm out (say, over 90F).
The fans turn on high speed based on coolant temperature - previous
diesels would trigger that mode at 105C but again, you have kind of a
half-breed there and I'm not sure of the specifics. I forget if the
124.131 is included in the ETM or not - might be a WIS-only thing if
you wanted to study electrical schematics...

Re: [MBZ] Leak detection - AC System

2005-07-27 Thread 72benz250
Hey Dan,

Does it say there is a leak detector? if so then all you need is a UV light. I
picked one up from pet smart 12$ and it works great.

Look at the fittings, do they look correct or is there an adaptor on it? if
there is an adapter it has been changed to something else. Could be R-134,
could be Freeze-12 ... Each one has it's own fitting.

Hope that helps.

Subject: Re: [MBZ] Bouncy SLS on my wagon ('85 300TD)

Meade,

If the bounce is SOFT and/or the car is sagging, your base pressure
is low. When the internal spring weakens in the base pressure
component of the levelling valve, base pressure is allowed to escape,
which in turn leads to a SOFT bounce. The relevant, poorly translated
passage from Chassis job 32-501:

"Oil pressure in the spring struts should not drop below a given
basic pressure, so that the spring struts can fully meet their
additional jobs of shock absorbers acting independent of positions of
level controller. Making sure of that basic pressure is attained by
means of a compression spring which pushes the return flow valve in
level controller out of reach of control disc when the available
pressure is below a given mark."

Essentially, the damping effect that a shock absorber usually
provides is achieved by constraining the movement of hydraulic fluid
within the STRUT. This can only be achieved if there is sufficient
base pressure to ensure that there's no cavitation around the flow
restrictors. The good news is that the restrictors don't wear out!

If (and only if) the bounce is HARD or DIAGONAL (one side harder) do
you need new spheres/accumulators. New spheres do not (and cannot)
solve sag or soft bounce, except by pure coincidence. Random
component replacement occasionally disturbs and thereby corrects the
actual cause of the trouble, but it can be an expensive methodology!

In case someone suggests replacing the struts: the failure mode for a
strut is external fluid leakage (MB gives a permissible leak rate);
they don't "wear out" or cause sagging. Cars sag because of a bad
base pressure valve OR worn subframe mounts, the latter causing far
less sag than the former. If the base pressure valve is not holding,
the reason is probably that the spheres (MB calls them
"accumulators") were low on nitrogen, causing frequent system shock
and leading to component failure. Spheres without gas are like using
a solid bar instead of a spring. Something has to give when you hit a
bump, and it will be the strut mounts, strut seals, and level control
valve components that take the hit.

To quote from 32-520, "Checking pressure reservoirs":

"Checking the gas filling pressure of pressure reservoir is required
whenever suspension is getting harder.

"The gas filling pressure decreases during operation, the time factor
is evaluated higher than the mileage. Under normal conditions, the
minimum pressure is attained after approx. 2 to 3 years or 80,000 to
120,000 km. Under extreme climatic conditions or in countries with
very high outside temperatures, the gas pressure may decrease faster
under given operating conditions, e.g. repeated slow bumper to bumper
driving.

Five years seems a little early for total sphere failure, but perhaps
the PO installed used ones or wasn't clear that they'd been done a
few years earlier. In any case, if they're shot and you do not
replace the spheres, you'll be replacing struts, strut mounts, and
levelling valves fairly regularly. When one side sags this can also
be an indicator that a sphere has failed (because of the differing
rate at which nitrogen's density changes under pressure), although it
could also be a collapsed rubber strut top mount.

Since you've already noted that one side is harder than the other,
I'd bet you're due for spheres. In that case it makes sense that,
when loaded, the bounce seemed even worse. The trailer weight would
have caused the system to add pressure to the struts to raise the
car. The added pressure in a system with less "give" because of low
gas pressure, plus hitting a bump, might have triggered the
overpressure release valve, causing you to lose any damping (and
height!) in the suspension.

Since you say the car sags overnight, your levelling valve definitely
needs to be rebuilt. If the car seems harder on one side than the
other, it's probably time to replace the spheres too (don't try to do
just one side; the pressures will not be the same), but I'd start
with the valve and see what happens.

Does the system react when you add load (200+lbs) to the back of the
car? What happens when you manually activate the level control valve
(disconnect the ball rod and move the lever)?

D.

[MBZ] ALDA Parts for 1987 300TDT w/ OM603.960

2005-07-27 Thread Steven Gee

Hi,

I am looking for some ALDA parts for a 1987 MBZ 300TDT with an OM603.960
engine. I would appreciate any information or ideas from anyone on
where to obtain ALDA parts for my 300TDT. I was told that a person

Re: [MBZ] a car that came from Shuler

2005-07-27 Thread Loren Faeth

Bzzzf t Well, it is partly right

The model designation is a number in 100th of a liter, up until they put
the C, E, or M first in the 90s. It has nothiing to do with the number of
cylinders. IT was related to displacement, up until the late 60s

not getting into prewar cars:
170v = 1.7 liter, and this was a 4
190, 190D, 190Db, 190Dc, 200, 200D were all 4 cyl 1.9 to 2.0 liter. 190Dc
is actually a 2 liter engine, just to confuse things. all diesels were OM
636 or OM 621

220
220a
220b
220Sb were all 2.2 liter 6 cyl, and I think all were m180
THe 300d, 300SEb, 300SL etc were 6 cyl
the 600 was a v-8 M100
Fairly simple until the /8 cars came out
then 220 and 230 were 4 cyl
250-300 were sixes
250S and 280S were sixes, until they put in the 3.5, 4.5 or 6.3 v-8s and
became a 280SE 4.5 or such

Letter designations, 50s thorough early 90s
D Diesel
S Super
SL Sport, Light
E EInspritz = fuel injection
L Long
C Coupe
combinations: SE, SEL, SD, CE, CD
Some other designations were available outside the US as in the G

Then came the wagon with a T designation, combined as TE or TD

Ad a shorthand, dealers began referring to the S cars as the S class.

Then MB adopted the "Class" designation, and put the letter first, and the
model number, still mostly tied to the displacement after, as in ML320, a
3.2 liter v6.

The C in front obviously no longer referrs to the coupe. I guess it is a
common class or commoners class.

If you are confused, don't worry. Even the designation system has been
confused by MB, or MB was confused about the designation system.

basically, you had it right for the /8 series forward.

I assume it is like my '81 300D. You do not need to remove the console; the
bushings are at the ends of the shift rod beside the transmission--as I
remember. They are cheap, but they are a pain to get installed. You have to
force them into the holes on the shifter and the transmission, and you have
little room beside the transmission. I almost ripped my fingernails out, but I
finally got them installed.

Good luck,

I have been having trouble with the shifter lately. It is real loose and
sometimes doesn't lock the tranny in park. Only starts in neutral alot of the
time. I have read some about bushings or such there. I looked and there are
three different ones. I know that they don't cost much and think I will buy
them all.

Can someone tell me what I am going to be going through to do this. I
plan on using a lift for the job so I am not going to be laying down.
Concerned about if I have to remove the console and lower the transmission?

Not exactly right. In this case, the 380 indicates a (approx.) 3.8 liter
engine. It happens to be a V8.

In the early 80s, back in Germany, the 300 series was what later became the
E-class, over here. You could see 300s with 2 liter fours, various diesels
and whatnot.

twelve cyls. Can someone help explain the madness to me?

Re: [MBZ] Bouncy SLS on my wagon ('85 300TD)

2005-07-27 Thread David Bruckmann

In case someone suggests replacing the struts: the failure mode for a
strut is external fluid leakage (MB gives a permissible leak rate);
they don't "wear out" or cause sagging.

So, it took me three days to realize it, but I've finally decided

the rear axle. I did the bounce test, and the RR corner seems to

As near as I can tell, the gassers went something like this:

2.2 & 2.3 were four bangers
2.5, 2.6, 2.8, 3.0 and 3.2 were sixes
3.8, 4.0, 4.5, 5.0, 5.5(AMG55, right?), 5.6, 6.3, 6.9 were eights
6.0 is V12.

No doubt, all the German car speciallists in the Puget Sound area use
the German braided stuff, because...well, it works. I just got back
from hauling the wife n' kids in the TD up to Bellingham at supersonic

leaking, while running B20-60(?), and I get it from the same source.
The braided line has worked well with Bio in our former Passat tdi,

Feel free to swing the car by my shop if you like, and I'll give it a look-see.
