yea, I figured if a new plug measured whatever, then others that measure
the same should be good. It will show a bad plug though with 30 or more
ohms.

A lot of meters aren't very sensitive below a few ohms, unless you have a
high end meter used for real small electronics.

For your meter, that is the value of a good plug. A different meter might
think something else.

[MBZ] 80 240D For Sale Cheap

2005-10-06 Thread l02turner

A friend has a '80 240D with about 150k miles on it located in Richmond Va
he'd like to get sell. He bought it for his daughter who drove it for
several years before buying something else and selling it to a neighbor.
The car was driven until several months ago when it wouldn;t start and the
owner left it in the driveway needing a battery we think. The owner moved
to Germany and didn't want to spend $100 on a new battery. The title has
been signed and will not be a problem.

The car is light yellow with tan interior (IIRC) - auto trans, manual
windows, -

fast glow plug kit and was serviced by the book until it failed to start.
The engine smokes slightly at startup but runs well and the AT shifts fine.

If interested, send me a note directly and I'll provide a phone number.
He wants to get $500 for it. Would be an excellent driver or parts car.
It's
such a nice car I'd really like someone to buy it & drive it instead of
parting it out

but what happens, happens. ;-)

On the 87, without afterglow, I'd recommend the afterglow conversion.
Basically that means installing a glow plug relay from any 3.5L diesel
(90-95), and replacing the dash gauge temp sender in the head with the
dual-output type (the extra output is for the relay). I did this on my

Afterglow has NO influence on cold starting temp or ease but it DOES
profoundly smooth out initial idle when the engine is started cold. The
later style glow plugs (used in MOST cars with afterglow relays) DO
slightly improve cold starting, but they will do that when used with a
normal (no afterstart) relay.

Biggest challenge to cold starting after insuring that the battery is
capable of delivering sufficient power and the preglow system is
operating perfectly, is to verify that there is NO water in the fuel
system and fuel is treated so that clouding won't occur at the lowest
expected ambient temps.

Re: [MBZ] Glow plug come on after starting

2005-10-06 Thread Fmiser
rumor has it that Kaleb wrote:

> Is there something wrong with me or what? Anytime I measure plugs cold

My favorite way to test them is with an old-fashioned automotive
ammeter. (Note - this method is for the "new" parallel pencil plugs) The
ones that display -30,0,+30. I put 12AWG wire leads on it.

To use it, I pop the top off of the glow relay and unplug the connector
for the glow plugs. There is a contact for each glow plug in this
connector, so I clip on meter lead to the fused side of the big,
screw-in fuse and then touch each contact, one at a time. The socket
has pin numbers molded into it, and these numbers correspond to the
cylinder number.

This method tests the wire _and_ the plug. When cold, a good plug draws
about 20A (Well, on my meter it point to the mark for 20 amps. I have
not calibrated or tested the accuracy of that meter...) It will drop
back to about 15A after 8-10 seconds.

Once (and only once - so far) I had a bad terminal contact and found it
this way. At the relay connector it showed bad - but at the plug they
were all good!

Philip, who likes cheap tools that work well.

Ultimately it depends on the weight, but that looks like a pretty light
trailer. Shouldn't be a problem. It'd look really pretty behind a
Mercedes.

I think a small trailer is the best of both worlds, really. You aren't
tempted to bring along too much stuff, but you can sleep off the ground

A lot of meters aren't very sensitive below a few ohms, unless you have a
high end meter used for real small electronics.

For your meter, that is the value of a good plug. A different meter might
think something else.

Um, the thought *had* crossed my mind. My wife drives her '96 A6

some point our son will need a car.

If I had prior experience with diesels, and in particular,
biodiesel as a fuel, I might do more than think about it...

But I'm not putting my wife in a vehicle that I don't know yet.
Last thing I need is her calling me from work, or from a customer

I have to experience a New England winter with a diesel car before
I'm willing to convert her too...

Yeah, I was stunned. Five bucks a gallon. This is a mainstream fuel/oil

The whole biodiesel market is in its infancy here in SE Wisconsin.
Pretty sad, consiering what's going on in neighboring states. In
Minnesota the government has mandated a small biodiesel content in all
the diesel fuel sold in the state. I don't like fuel mandates, but they
can, at least, prompt a startup of some industrial capacity. We've got
fuel-grade ethanol plants popping up here to produce gasoline oxygenator

The difference in speed/power should be inconsequential due to the 3 litre
being a older design and having to pull along a wagon as compared to the 2.5
being in a sedan.
If you are worried about mpg go for the 2.5 however if you want the extra
versatility go for the tourist.

The 3 litre motor is a very proven design and more common than the 2.5.
What are the colour combinations?

I did follow several listers advice and tried the biodiesel. There is an
oil company here in Wichita that sells B100 in large pails. I ran my car
until the reserve light had just come on, then added the whole bucket of
B100. I drove the remainder of the weekend on that. Then I put 5
gallons of dino in. They also have B2 at several pumps. They told me
they are probably going to offer B20 at the pump (which I think sounds
like the way to go). At any rate, I did not notice a change in the
engine sound, but I did notice a DRAMATIC reduction in black smoke! It
was a totally different experience. I also thought the car felt a
little "zippier" that could have been my imagination, or it might have
just been that the biodiesel really did clear out some built up gunk. I
changed the secondary (spin on) filter. I have not changed the primary
filter, but it is nearly clear, so I am keeping an eye on it.

I'd check the resistance of each glow plug, which should be around 8-11

2.5 oz of acetone per 10 gallons and achieving a 1/3 increase in fuel

hi Tarek!

yes.
i've run almost exclusively B100 in our unmodified 300D for most of the
last 25K miles over the last couple of years with no ill effect.
having seen the experiences of the many BioD users in this area, i think
the concerns over fuel lines leaking on our cars are much overstated; i'd
watch the fuel lines as i would with most any other vehicle of that vintage,
and replace them with something better when/if they start to show seepage.

oddly enough, the only cars i know to have had fuel line failures when
using BioD were an ancient neglected VW, and 2 practically new MBZ E320 CDIs.

Re: [MBZ] Biodiesel

2005-10-06 Thread ernest breakfield
hi Donald!

just pump some B99-B100 in it to give it a try; it'll mix with
however much you've got in the tank. run it lower before you fill it if
you want a higher ratio, but it will blend and run in any ratio.

don't spill it on the paint. if you do, hose it off, don't wipe it;
BioD makes a lovely paint and rubber adhesive remover.

you should *always* be ready with fresh fuel filters in a diesel.
BioD may quite likely clean your fuel system out and loosen up gunk
that's accumulated from running #2; they higher a concentration of BioD
you use, the faster it'll happen.
i never had an clogging when i switched to B100 in my car, but the
previous owner had apparently used good fuel and fuel additives and
there wasn't much gunk built up. i changed filters just before i started
using B100 and with the next few oil changes, but that was it.

there's no 'shock to the system'; it's just a different fuel and you
can go back and forth and mix to your hearts content. the only shock may
be the one you experience when you hear how much smoother the engine
runs and how much better it smells.;-)

cheers!

There are three ways to use vegi oil in a diesel.

 * VO (vegitable oil) - this is clean, new oil. Depending on what plant
it came from and how it was processed it may be too thick at fuel-tank
temperatures. This can be fix with a tank heater (usually the VO is in
a second tank with dino-diesel in the first) dino is used for start-up
and shutdown 'cause it's hard to heat fuel in the lines and pumps. Or
it can be mixed with dino in the main tank. The dino-diesel is used to
dilute the VO enough that it doesn't need a heater. It's often not
necessary to filter and de-water VO.

 * WVO (waste vegitable oil) - Much more variable, but usually much
cheaper. WVO must be filtered and de-watering is a usually a good plan.
Then it's basically the same as VO - heater or blend.

 * Biodiesel - Startes life as VO or WVO, but is then "transesterfied"
chemically. It's properties do vary with the base stock, but in
shirt-sleeve weather it is a "drop-in" replacement for dino-diesel.

Ultimately it depends on the weight, but that looks like a pretty light
trailer. Shouldn't be a problem. It'd look really pretty behind a
Mercedes.

I think a small trailer is the best of both worlds, really. You aren't
tempted to bring along too much stuff, but you can sleep off the ground
where your stuff won't get wet if there's a rainstorm. I used to borrow
my parents' Jayco pop-up camper and tow it behind my Volvo 240 wagon.

The older plugs have a bigger 'nut' on them that you use to unscrew them.
A 12mm worked fine on my 87 300D, but was nowhere near big enough for the
series plugs on the 78 300D.

I vote to keep posting the lists. They're not that frequent, and
everyone's computer has a functioning Delete key.

Personally, even though I'm not currently in the market for a car, I
find the lists interesting as a way of seeing what's out there and what
prices are like. Eventually, my car will wear out and then the lists
will be directly useful to me. Sorting through pages of Craigslist
entries to find the few that are makes and models I might be interested
in is pretty tedious.

Bob,

In the case of my brother's 78 300D, it meant that there was something up
with the glow system. About two months later, it turned into a hard to
start condition as the weather cooled. You probably won't have THAT problem
in the phoenix area :)

Marshall sent me a diagnostic that was way easier than the CD, so I forwarded
it to you. In my case, I had just enough resistance built up in the #2
hole from carbon that the #1 plug wasn't getting all it was supposed to.
LT Don's suggestion of beating it with a stick - literally, remove glow plug,
stuff a small piece of wood in there to break apart the carbon, then
replace the plug - was spot on what fixed the problem.

IIRC, it's either a 21 or 22mm wrench (or deepish socket that will not
fit around the oil filter canister or IP) needed to get the glow plugs out.

Good luck...

Re: [MBZ] G-wagon, was 33 1/3 increase in Diesel fuel mileage...Huh?

2005-10-06 Thread John M McIntosh
I don't own it so it's hard for me to comment, mind I did poke about
a bit a year back
deciding if getting one would be good thing. Somehow the $20-25K Cdn
needed wasn't there.

a) It's a truck, expect poor milage & poor acceleration.
b) See above, goes anywhere, my friend uses his to haul dead deer
from the back country.
c) 20+ year old truck, expect to replace lots of suspension
components. Not much different than say 25 year old 300D.
d) 617's can be converted to turbo 617's, watch for baffled oil pan &
custom exhaust headers etc to get things to fit.

e) Expect anything from cloth roughness to burl walnut A/C
f) If you picked up an 82 300D what would you expect to have to
replace/fix/refurbish/do maintenance on?

g) Snow what's that goes anywhere

My dealer here in Canada says they now have access to European EPC
which has made life way
easier for dealing with Euro stuff. IE, sit down with VIN, type in,
order things

PS the fellow I got the 92 300 TDt from, had a burl walnut outfitted
5 door 300GD, *very nice* Very much NOT FOR SALE

Ya, my friend's 280GE with the badly adjusted lamba which:

a) gave him about 10 mpg.
b) made the floor about the CAT *very* hot.

Required someone who knew what they were doing to adjust it correctly.
Price of gas drove that decision, versus say the pending truck fire.

[MBZ] I need help with an OM 628 motor

2005-10-06 Thread Kayoooh
Hello List,

I would appreciate it very much if someone can direct me to where I can find
detailed explanation on the theory of operation and it's implementation of
the 4L OM628 engine (aka 400 CDI). Any exploded diagrams of this motor and
the names of it's component will also be very helpful.

Some of you may remember my complaint of an unpleasant, high pitch
clattering sound that is heard only upon startups and I would really love to
chase the sound and identify the part emitting it. This task will be made
more difficult with brief duration of the sound but I must find a solution
since it seems to be getting worse.

I have suspected the sound to be coming from a leaking lifter/lifters on the
right bank and/or a collapsed chain tensioned. I am astonished that this has
happened to this motor even though it has less than 50,000 miles! I did
replace the motor oil with Mobil1, 4000 miles ago in hope of resolving this
issue but as I have said, it seems to have gotten worse.

Thank you all,

Omar.

A properly running diesel is VERY efficient.

There was some discussion of that in the mercedes shop magazine a few
issues back if I may paraphrase as compared to gassers, it was
interesting
because of the concepts we take for granted.

a) Gassers fill the cylinder with fuel/air, you compress and ignite
the mixture with one or more spark plugs, because of how
the explosive wave form travels it usually leaves unburned fuel at
the outer edges of the "cold" cylinder wall, so you never consume all
the fuel.
Diesels on the other hand inject fuel into hot air, the fuel explodes
consuming all the fuel since the fuel usually does not reach a cold
spot in the cylinder before igniting.

b) Gassers require vacuum to pull fuel air/mixture into cylinder, and
provide the ventura effect for carburettors, a side effect of this is
engine braking on hills and manifold vacuum to drive door locks.
However pulling a vacuum by the pistons actually requires lots of
energy, so you consume more gas to produce the manifold vacuum,
perhaps lots more energy than a vacuum pump. I realize that fuel
injection and turbo gassers change this equation, still air volume
and gasoline is varied resulting in manifold vacuum on most gassers.
Diesel don't have this problem, so less energy required to idle since
the engine is not spending energy being a huge vacuum pump.

c) Diesel fuel by volume has lots more energy than gas, so less is
needed to do a given amount of work.
