[MBZ] Limo console wood install report (W124)

2005-12-22 Thread Dave M.
Hi all,

I wanted to add some extra electrical switches in my W124, and prefer a
factory appearance. Thanks to Aaron Lam, I learned there was a wood trim
piece used in the long wheelbase (limo) version W124 in Europe. This has
extra switch holes for (I assume) the 2 extra windows in the 6-door chassis.
I picked up one of these 'limo wood' panels for my 1994 E500, which
originally had 1 aftermarket switch added for the BergWerks first gear start
(FGS) kit - normal position has stock upshifts, the other position selects a
programmable upshift speed for the 1-2 part-throttle upshift.

Anyway, I wanted to replace that funky FGS switch with a factory switch.
And, I wanted to add a switch to turn on the stereo without the key in the
ignition. (On the E500, this is a big deal, with the key in position 1 the
current draw is nearly 20 amps!) I also wanted to add a momentary contact
type switch for my Valentine-1. I specifically wanted it set up so that when
the key is turned off, and then the car is re-started, the V-1 does NOT turn
back on. So, I wired up a relay to act as a 'latching' relay... momentary
contact triggers the V-1 power module (and relay), but when the key is
turned off, the relay un-latches - requiring a press of the switch to turn
it back on. In case you're wondering why, it's because of the irritating
'startup dance' that the V-1 goes through at each power-up. I don't use it
all the time, and hate listenting to that screeching every time I forget to
turn off a regular rocker switch (which is what I have right now in the
diesel.)

See links below for photos. The switch in the 'fader' position is actually
an ACC recirculation switch, which controls the V-1. When energized, the red
LED stays on. I used this switch because it was the only one I found which
has normally closed (NC) *and* normally open (NO) contacts, allowing use of
only one relay instead of two. Push up/on closes the NO contacts, push
down/off breaks the NC contacts. The right side 'child safety' switch is for
the FGS speed selection, replacing the goofy round switch on the old wood
panel. The next one down is a factory "dual-tone horn" switch, which I have
set up to turn the radio on & off without the key. Next to the left (in the
center) is a central lock/unlock switch, which is at present not used. To
the left of that is a 'trunk release' switch with integrated alarm LED,
again, this is not functional. I may work on making those functional in the
future, but for now they're just filling the empty spaces. All are wired so
the backlight illumination works - no dead/dark switches, lol.

Sorry for the lousy photos. I'm still using a 'loaner' 2MP camera from work,
about 5 years old (translation - a fossil in digicam years.) I'd like to get
a better 'after' photo without the flash glare. I'll get a better one
eventually. My old/stock 1994 wood trim panel is for sale, pretty cheap,
since I have no use for it. Email me for details.

Re: [MBZ] Unstable Starting

2005-12-22 Thread zac

Thanks for all the help.

Yep. The Bosch solenoid was dead short across the posts off the shelf.
And about

$13 more than the Brazilian job I ended up with. Thats three times now I've
pulled this starter in the past 6 mo. Love that top allen bolt. Easiest way I
found: slide a 10mm ratcheting box end onto the 10mm allen socket (huh?
its not

a socket, but its 3/8 drive) and slip it in the bolt, then ratchet away. Must
say, they are high, but those ratchet wrenches have their uses.

Everything back to operational.

I installed the pos. battery cable on the big bolt, and the strap to

I had to do one brake rod mount when I rebuilt my whole suspension, but
it was more of a "clunk" than a squeak. I was thinking that could be
his problem, perhaps before it wears out completely it squeaks. The

Are you sure your suspension is not being taxed too heavily?

A two year old '66 200D with a manual transmission was my first diesel.
Wonderful, reliable car, but really underpowered if you do much highway
driving in hilly country or at altitude much above 4000'. Fuel
consumption was not especially great. While I could coax mid 30 mpg on
the highway IF I WAS CAREFUL, low 30 was far more usual. The car was
VERY susceptible to rust - rocker panels, jack sockets, and inner
fenders (a REAL pain to fix/replace). This engine was usually good for
250kmi with proper maintenance.

Re: [MBZ] cruise control question

2005-12-22 Thread Trampas
Well I thought that the difference was the resistors soldered inside the
units. Specifically I thought the resistors were calibration for the
different horse power of the engine. For example if the 300SD one was put in
a 560SEL then it would press gas a lot to increase speed a little bit.

I think on the latter ones '87 and newer they had the calibration in a
module that plugged in beside the connector.

Now I am often wrong but these were the assumptions that I had been using.

I guess you could sell the stack you have to one of the rebuilders of these
amps.

[MBZ] 126 seat motor question

2005-12-22 Thread Kaleb C. Striplin
On the earlier 126's(well and the later too but use a different seat
motor), there are 3 motors under the seat. The epc lists each of the 3
motors that do a different function as a different part number. There
are stickers on them with different part numbers as well(old part
numbers). My question is, are all 3 of these motors actually the same
even though the epc says they have different part numbers? Look at the
motors they are identical even the wires coming out of them. The only
difference I can tell is a couple of the wires are color coded
different. Some even have the same color wire but an outer color coding
later applied. I just dont see any difference in them but wanted to see
if anybody knew for sure.

Thanks,

Kaleb

With the roof issues, I see a convertible in the future. Maybe Jim can
fashion some body bits out of microwave carcass for the rust areas. A
steady hand with the torch and a welders blanket gets the headliner and
sunroof removed, exposing the nice interior. Maybe he can also
fabricate a good metal or kevlar soft top protector for the interim
while waiting for a real top to be made.

Re: [MBZ] O.T.- Air Purifiers

2005-12-22 Thread redghost
Depends on if it is an ionizing one or just a HEPA. Both provide some
treatment of air, but not in a really large area.

HEPA will suck up particulate around the unit and within the reach of
its suction.

Ionizing units put out ozone and "sanitizes" the environment around it.
Not sure it will do a whole enclosed office room, but should do a desk
well enough. Will have a "clean" after the thunder storm smell and
should defeat bugs that hover around the desktop. May irritate mucous
membranes if you hang around it too long.

Neither one will do much good for areas away from the desk. If you
would like to reduce possible contagion for healthcare worker, washing
hands and being masked should do that. Clerical folks at a desk will
be served by these units, and should wash hands anyway

The efficiency of ionization air purifiers is very low. That is to say
that only a small percentage of particulates are trapped in a single
pass. Mechanical filtration using HEPA filters is very efficient. They
use more electricity and replacing the filters is expensive.
I use both at home in the bedroom 24/7. The gunk that accumulates in
each is impressive and disturbing.

Scrape/brush the snow off of it daily, just as if you were
driving it. When I had to store my cars outside all winter during
my garage extension project (which discombobulated the existing
garage too) I did not do this, and the ones with the pretty blanket
of snow over them that I completely ignored ended up with some
pretty serious interior condensation-related problems.

If you're not going to be driving it, disconnect the battery.

Fill the tank, change the oil, wash, dry and wax the exterior, treat
the interior, coat the rubber bits, lube everything, drive it onto a
thick sheet of visquine, insert two or three dri-z-air under the car,
crack the windows, cover with more heavy visquine and seal it up with
good tape. Then use a shop vac to suck out all the air you can and do
a final seal. If you do it on a really cold day, you should limit the
amount of residual water vapor trapped and the calcium carbonate in the
dri-z-air will not be over taxed sequestering water.

YMMV, and others may have better ideas for east coast outside storage

Consumers Report has reported on these and had very little good to say about
the Sharper Image. IIRC, they did a follow up on the latest version with a
new device, same results.

They operate the different types in a room with the bad stuff introduced and
go from there. It seems like they did say one type did best.

I'll try to find their response and post it later.

Re: [MBZ] O.T.- Air Purifiers

2005-12-22 Thread Gerald R. Flintrop
Bob,

I've used two of the large, Ionic Breeze units for about three years, and
find that they are effective. They do seem to produce a noticeable amount of
ozone, which Consumers Union thinks is a bad thing.

If I had it to do over, I would buy an Ionic Pro brand for less than half
the price (about $150 vice $350+). They are available at Fry's, Kohl's,
Wal-Mart and other places.

I believe the smaller, desk-top units are much less expensive.

Re: [MBZ] why is this so cheap?

2005-12-22 Thread andrew strasfogel
Money pit indeed. That's some kind of SCARY rust! Headliner replacement
will set you back $1,000! Sunroof repair at least $500, maybe double that!
OTOH, the seats are nice. A 250SE without these problems might sell for
$7,000 so I would only offer $2,000 to allow plenty of leeway for repairing
the rust.

Personal taste in shades of the color green are HIGHLY subjective. I am
totally hooked to moss green (DB 834) but forest green leaves me cold. Pea
soup green from 1970 is OK, but the later Euro version (more like avocado)
is IMHO pukey.

FWIW, I also think they are just plain ugly, though this opinion may not
carry much weight with anyone else. It's difficult to see their lineage

[MBZ] 350 sdl a/c clutch r/r

2005-12-22 Thread Constantine N. Polites

Update on the removal an replacement of the a/c clutch on the 350 sdl.

On this model you do not need a puller. You do need a large monkey
wrench with some
copper on each jaw ( to protect the pulley). You can then hold the
pulley with the wrench

while you remove the nut with a box wrench.

You will need a right angle snap ring pliers- preferably the Hazet.
Also you need a straight
snap ring pliers that will open to at least 40mm. Snap On makes one
and Hazet # 1845 A-19
should do the job- the tool is for the back snap ring. The normal snap
ring tools are only 1-7/16"

at the widest opening and will not (as I have found) make life pleasant.

Some time ago I designed a series of mandrels for such problem
installation in hydraulic machinery.
Basically, you make a sleeve the i.d.which will match the o.d. of the
shaft with a setback for the next o.d..
The o.d of the sleeve should be 1mm larger than the o.d of the shaft
offset. You then transfer the
seal or ring from the sleeve to the shaft. All of this is if you really
want to solve a repeat maintenance item.

Kaleb,

It would be nice to have a section showing sites on repair articles possibly

broken down by models. That way someone new would access this as a library
of information. You also wouldn't be interfering with any copyright
infringements. Whenever a new site was found by a subscriber it could be
added.

Starting the process of trying to figure out how to create a half way
decent web site and will be needing some ideas as to content. Its
y'alls site really so what do you want to see? Some of the stuff from
mbz.org is up as far as articles go but Im not sure we should be coping
that stuff directly. I dont think its copyrighted since its all just
derived from posts over the years but still probably should. If anybody
has any subjects for articles they would like to see, let me know. Will
probably need volunteers to right up some articles for different
repairs, mods or what not. Probably have a section for list members
pictures, pictures of their cars and that sort of thing. Might also be
nice to include the archives from the old lists if anybody has that
stuff handy. Anyways, just give me your imput and will see what we can
come up with.

Pressure bleeding is the ONLY way to go. My MityVac doesn't go anywhere near

Looks like the 240D gets stored outside this winter. Any advice on
avoiding

problems? It gets really cold here in central Massachusetts.

2005-12-22 Thread Dave M.
I learned the hard way - over many years - that the MityVac is an *awful*
tool for bleeding brakes, regardless of how much they hype that use for it.
Pressure bleeding is the ONLY way to go. My MityVac doesn't go anywhere near
brake fluid anymore. I use it all the time for testing vacuum system
components, and boost pressure related items.

If anyone needs the full MityVac Silverline kit, here's a great deal:

but the corrosion will come back. Disassembly is fairly obvious, as I
recall; just don't lose any parts. I threw my silverline out and bought the
cheaper plastic version; no problems yet but I also use a pressure bleeder

What's your 201, a 2.3, 2.5-16v, 2.6?
The 124 and 201 are somewhat similar, even share/interchange some suspension

Probably two of the most rust-resistant MBz chassis.

Thanks all. THis car is an 82 300td. As per Tom here, I checked the
solenoid and
it didn't work when jumpered. So I found a place with a new solenoid,
bought it,
installed it.

Now get this. When I replaced the neg. battery cable, the starter
started
spinning. With the key off, etc. It did not engage the flywheel, but was
turning all right. So I go from one problem to the extreme opposite.

I installed the pos. battery cable on the big bolt, and the strap to
the starter
was on the small bolt, and it still turned whether or not I had in the
small
wire. My qustion: Is this a defective part, or does it tell me something
about
some other defective part or installation technique? I mean, really,
it's not
me, it can't be me, can it?

WHee, what a ride. (The only other time I've bought a starter solenoid
(for a
slant 6) it was bad right off the shelf and I had to rebuild it. I can't
get
into this one.)

THanks for your help.

My apologies to Mr. Moore:

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the list
Blockheaters were plugged in...cold weather persists.
The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,
In hopes that packages from Rusty soon would be there.

The children were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of 240Ds (4 speed, of course) danced in their heads.
And mamma in her 'kerchief and a beautiful corsage,
Knew I was getting ready to go to the garage .

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
It sounded like an OM 617 with something the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
I tripped over a jackstand now I'm bleeding from a gash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Made me think the POS cars in the yard could get up and go.
Then, what to my wondering eyes should I see,
But a perfectly maintained mid-'80s 190D.

With a little old driver, I don't need a sleuth,
I knew in a moment it's Herr Doktor Booth.
More rapid than eagles his advice he dealt out,
And he whistled, and waved, and started to shout!

"Change fluids, change coolant! Changes filters, Change fuses!
Replace all those hoses from which something oozes!
>From the highly waxed roof, to the three pointed star!
Now do these thing, do these thing...take car of your cars!"

As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,
Which always seem to end up in your garage, my oh my.
So into the garage Herr Doktor Booth flew,
With a bag full of tools and a timing chain too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the drive
Several other listers who soon had arrived.
I went to the car as quick as I could,
But Herr Doktor Booth was already 'neath the hood.

He was dressed in a coverall , from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with M1 and soot.
A bundle of tools he had flung on his back,
They were so complete..I was taken aback.
He said,"Your engine's so dirty I think I might wretch!
The valves are all wack, look at this chain stretch !

This thing is a wreck, many PMs you have missed
Have you learned nothing in your years on the list?"
.

He was fixing fuel hoses that were all out of kilter,
"I need a hand with this wretched inline filter!".
And then barreling in as if on que,
Were Kaleb, Chris and Casey and the Dons (OK and LT) too !

The work in my garage was making me dizzy,
Everyone was keeping incredibly busy!
Seeing all these good friends from so far away,
Working so hard..made me wish I were...able to serve them frosty brews

They spoke not a word, but went straight to their work,
And torqued everything with the wrench (Nm, of course) with a jerk.
And then waving his hands like the big rappers do,
He said,"Let's roll fellers, our work here is through!"

He sprang to his 190D, all Christmas arrayed ,
And they all piled in like Shriners in a parade.
But I heard him exclaim, as I puffed my Christmas cigar,
"Happy Christmas to all, and TAKE CARE OF YOUR CARS!"

One of my early cars was a 68 Plymouth Satellite (Road Runner)
convertible that my friends dubbed "The Hulk" cause she was huge and
triple green. Interior was actually a two tone green and she even had
the, rather expensive at the time, factory color keyed top that was
also green.

I miss that car aahh unibodies and rust *sobs*

I goofed with my 'the difference between a W124 and a W210 ?' question - I
meant W124 vs. W201 !

I would have called the car I've just bought a 124, but the chassis number
starts W201

There is a conversion kit for some of the vacuum only models to add
the pressure feature, but it's less expensive to buy a new one with it
than a vacuum only and the kit.

One of the dual converter pumps that reads both pressure and vacuum is
MOST desirable, but you will seldom need pressure (but when you do it's
wonderful to have that feature). Probably costs a $10-20 premium.

I think I got mine from JC Whitney about 15 years ago, maybe $6.95.
I'll see if it's got instructions I can scan.

I have one that does pressure and vacuum, the silverline version. I
have used it a few times then all the sudden it doesnt work anymore.
When doing vacuum you pump it and it holds vacuum while you have the
handle sqeezed in but releases it when you let go. Wont hold or build
up vacuum. Wonder what the deal is.

It's got rubber flapper valves in it. Easy solution is that there is
foreign matter in a valve. Harder solution requires a repair kit for
$10 or so. Either way, you've got to disassemble the thing.

One of the dual converter pumps that reads both pressure and vacuum is
MOST desirable, but you will seldom need pressure (but when you do it's
wonderful to have that feature). Probably costs a $10-20 premium.

Pep Boys sells them, so did Auto Zone, and MAYBE Harbor Freight.
