aftermarket wipers wont stay attatched to 126 wiper arms.

[MBZ] 1982 Mercedes 300SD Wagon - Power Steering pump failure.

2006-01-11 Thread MICHAEL ESH
Any ideas on why the power steering would fail completely all at once?
It was working fine yesterday and today it is not working at all.
I popped the top and the reservoir is full to the proper line and when I turn
the steering wheel there is no groaning, squeaking, squealing, or whining.
(Other than my own of course)
It has no leaks whatsoever.
The only thing that happened recently was the pump was flushed and new fluid
and a filter were added. I used ATF Fluid to refill.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [MBZ] A/C evaporator cleaners?

2006-01-11 Thread Russ Williams

Dave,

The last time the HVAC guy cleaned the Evaporator and Condenser at my
town house he used Dow Tub & Bath Cleaner, Scrubbin' Bubbles type.
He said it worked as good as the commercial stuff and didn't need as much
water to flush off.

You may want to give it a try.

You can also get the commercial stuff at any HVAC outlet. But it is
concentrated

and the smallest you can get is a gallon at lease thats the case here.

finding vendors for this stuff, though. This is the only one I've
located so far:

Is this what I want to buy, or does someone else know of a better
product and/or vendor? Note there are two different items here - the
DWD2 product, and the cheaper 'core treatment' can that's displayed,
and the prices are very different ($40 vs. $15). Rusty, do you sell

[MBZ] Crack, wagons, cheap cars, piano movers, and crazy Uncles

2006-01-11 Thread Donald Snook
My Uncle Fred loves cars as much as anyone. He was a nuclear engineer
for Westinghouse and built nuclear subs. He is certainly the most
intelligent person I have ever met. He is also the nerdiest person I
have ever seen. He once complained that he needed a pocket protector
for his pocket protector because it was getting dirty. He really is
"that guy." His wife and sons also all play AT LEAST three instruments
each. He also collects all sorts of odd cars. He had a beautiful 41
Cadillac that was used in the movie "War and Remembrance." The strange
thing in the movie was that He was Hitler's chauffer. I don't know why
Hitler would be in a Cadillac, but they did use his car. He also has
several MGs MGBs, Triumphs, and several Avanti (s). He once rebuilt
the MGB's engine because he was bored. He put everything back together
and he had a hand full of small parts left over. It ran, so he decided
to put the parts in a Ziploc in the glove box. As far as I know 4 years
later the car was still running fine.

Anyway, he needed to move a piano, so He found an old Buick station
wagon for $50. He haggled with the guy and got it for $40. After moving
the piano, my cousin (his son) thought the big estate wagon would make a
good first car. So, he started loving caring for that old buick.
Several years later, they still had. For the life of me, I cannot
figure out how they got that piano in a station wagon.

the hoses are about $10 from Rusty. Check VERY CAREFULLY the hard pipe that
runs along the engine to the trans for leaks/holes. After 25 years they may
have rubbed through-don't ask how I know.

Rear steer. Most likely subframe mounts, especially if the car lowrides
in the rear. Very doable yourself in your garage. Could also be the links,
which is the more likely answer for a 201 or 124...

Sounds like it should be on Banned!

While taking a long sweeping 70mph curve, the rear end seems to be
trying to steer the car. It feels like a loose cannon is flopping
around in the trunk.

I checked the trunk, no cannon. What should I suggest my Indy look
for? I fear this work will be too much for me as I am unable to work
with my hands over my head.

Of course, I could put the car on a rotisserie.

Mercedes had become a common German name, but it is not strictly Lutheran. My
Gramma's cousin (German Catholic) was named Mercedes. I don't think it is
popular any more. But the origin remains the same...the devotion to Our Lady
of Mercy pre-dates Lutheranism...it's medieval. Probably popularized by the
Mercedenarians - a Catholic order of monks that would exchange themselves to
the Muslims for the release of Christian prisoners (during the Crusade era).

Kind of like "Christopher" it means Christ-bearer but lots of
athiests/agnostics (like my parents) name their kids Christopher just becuase
they like the name, it has just entered the culture.

Just putting my 2 cents in, not requiring anyone to believe in patron saints.

The third 300D, also a 78, got the name Ingrid. The 300CD got the name

As far as I know, the only engine in the 124 series that has a
reputation for cracking heads is the 6 cylinder 1987 model. It has the
603.96x engine.

From my archive:

Head model on 603 diesel engines:

For the head question, look at the casting number near #2/#3 cylinder.
Should be 603-016-xx-20 or something like that. If "xx" is 14, it's
the old
bad head. If 17, it's the newer head from a 3.5L. And if it's 22, it's
a

REALLY new head.

Thanks, Wray, for saving me the trouble! ;) To clarify my previous
post, if
the head is number 17 or higher, it is the "good", reinforced head. A
number

15 or lower is the old, weak head.

I have heard of 5 variations... 14 (1987 version), 15 (?), 17 (3.5L,
1990 to
1995), 20 (newer than 1995-ish), and 22 (last revision, AFAIK). I
forget if
number 15 exists or if it's a figment of my imagination, but the other
4 are

real. The head I bought from Rusty in spring 2002 was a #22.

Brian,

For some reason the 114/115 early tail lights either had metal contacts
available to the second 5w lamp or not. Gump came to me with no brass
tongue thing to put power to the second bulb, so no light.

When you turn on the lights you normally twist to the right. To
activate fog, pull out one click, for back fog, another click or all
the way toward you.

Seriously though, I'd like to know what you mean by changing out the
rear lamps. Which lamps specifically did you replace and what fills
their previous function? Wait. I just found this post which answers
that.

Redghost wrote:

1994 Mitsubishi Diamante LS - Unicorn
2003 Mitsubishi Galant ES - Ghost

Also have had:

1968 Plymouth Satellite (Road Runner) Convertible - The Hulk. She was

1986 Chevrolet S-10 - MidKnight
1994 Chevrolet Caprice 9C1 - Officer Mitchell

Many, many more you name something out of love, not because you
want it to keep you company. Though I do talk to GL quite a bit,
usually "She'll hold together. Hear me baby? Hold together."

It is a long long tradition starting with the reason men (sailors)
named their vessels instead of just calling them "The big Brown Boat"
or "The little Wooden Boat" To give to something that we live with,
and deal with on a daily basis a feeling of personality and a feeling
of purpose.

Would you ever get on a Forrestal class aircraft Carrier called
"U.S.S. Big Boat with Planes"? Don't know about you, but I'm getting

A couple of people have built search engines to aggregate search results for
Craigslist and CL will block them. CL's story is that they want all the
activity to be local, and a national search capability would circumvent
that...

I'm going to sell a baby grand. ebay or Craigslist?

Pianos are hard to ship, probably worse than cars. Cars, at
least, can be driven and/or stored outside in an open trailer.
I'd favor a local sale over a remote one, at least at first.

I had exactly one nibble via craigslist on my for-sale 450 SL.

Re: [MBZ] I've got a long drive PLUS I need a name

2006-01-11 Thread Christopher McCann
Actually, there is a connection. When Emil Jellinek first started selling
Daimlers in France, he insisted on changing the name as the French would not
like a German named car. Although a Jew, he was fascinated by all things
Spanish (AND was a diplomat of the Catholic King of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire to France...he died in a French prison during or shortly after WWI) and
named the car after his daughter Mercedes, whose full name was Nuestra Senora
de la Mercedes - A Catholic devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary under the
Title of "Our Lady of Mercy". In Hugary, he sold Daimlers under the name Maja
- his other daughter.

So Catholic girls named Mercedes, have the Virgin Mary as their patron
saint, as do our cars...including St. Frances of Rome (patron saint of cars)
and St. Christopher (patron saint of drivers).

There is alot in a name. Unfortunately, by all accounts, Emil Jellinek
(although brilliant) was a real SOB in the personality department. His
daughter Mercedes died in poverty. The MB Collections catalog sells a doll of
her, which OF COURSE (ATTN: LT DON) my daughter MUST have. We'll see.

  Tchuss,

  Chris

this email is inappropriate or breaches eBay policy, please help protect
other eBay community members by reporting it to us immediately."

Then it went on to say,"
Dear eBay member,

This is a message from eBay :

Be aware you have received the third non paying bidder alert. Your account
is now targeted for termination in order to avoid this you must click on
the "Respond Now" button and update your information . After you've done
this we will revise your account's activities and send you an email with
our final decision within 48 hours.

Thank you, the eBay antifraud team."

I have purchased very few things on ebay and I have paid for them all
promptly. To whom should I report this crap to?

Re: [MBZ] What is a quick fix

Heck, I think I've switched to the cheapest ones I can find at Advance (the
$4 plastic ones).

I used to think the Bosch ones were good, so I spent $12 a wiper for them.
Then I tried these Valeo ones for $40 a pop from Tirerack.com They are a
hair better, but really, anything's going to streak under bad conditions.
I'd say these little plastic pieces of crud are doing about as good a job as
anything else that I've seen. And if they last at least a year (they're
pretty close now) then that's really all they need to do...

I agree with Marshall's remedies for screeching wipers.

Not long after I fitted brand new wiper assemblies to my wagon (the old ones
had been endlessly bent and reshaped by my efforts to stop chronic
screeching), one of them began to screech again. The fix was a simple twist
to ensure that the blade swept the glass at the same angle in both
directions.

You could also try crimping the little paired clamps which hold your rubbers
and stiffeners in place. Over time, they can loosen off. But be careful not
to over-crimp them.

WHEW! I never dreamed that expressing my disdain for the puerile practise
of christening personal vehicals with cutesie-poo nicknmaes would engender
such a massive response.

BTW, the American Heritage dictionary lists "Brunhild" (Icelandic) as well
as Brunnhilde (Wagnerian).

I love this list!

Yes, but I thought that was for assigning attributes from one living

On the other hand, my dad had a '69 Volvo 164 3-liter straight six

the 300SEL is making 154, or whatever, horsepower by the new net

Quite right, I've only ever named one car and thats Hammie. When I was waiting
for his new exhaust to be put on (the day after I bought him) I was at a
bookstore reading a "Baby Blues" comic. It occured to me that Hammie was my
second Mercedes and the character Hammie in the comic is the second child. Fit
perfect.
I tried to name the 190D when I first got it and nothing would stick. Then I
realized I was trying too hard, a good name will just come.

had been sideswiped. Since it looked like a bite had been taken out of
it,
we called it "The Great White".
Point being, names should come to you...you shouldn't have to think
about
it.

Anyone know what the wheel size was/is on a 1990 300SEL.

The wheel size was 6 1/2 Jx15 H2 ET21.5. 7 Jx15 H2 ET25 were used on
Euro versions and will fit the US models as well. The tire size for
either wheel was 205/65x15.

Re: [MBZ] A/C evaporator cleaners?

2006-01-11 Thread Rich Thomas
I saw some at Lowes or Home Depot, in the AC section, WAs in a white
spray can (blue lettering I think) and its name implied its intended
use. I do not recall what it was though. It might not be the foaming
stuff.

I also saw them demo some on that TV car show (2 guys garage?) where the
older guy hawks Tornado turbulizers to improve your fuel mileage. Not
sure if this is the stuff but it was like this http://www.dwd2.com/
http://www.dwd2.com/docs/DWD2_Products.htm

google this"car air conditioner evaporator clean foam" for a bunch
of hits

Hi all,

I need to pull the dash to replace the vac pods on my 124, and figure
I might as well clean the evaporator while I have easy access to it.
There are foaming cleaners that are supposed to lift off the dirt &
crud and rinse them away, down the drain tubes. I'm having a hard time
finding vendors for this stuff, though. This is the only one I've
located so far:

http://www.ackits.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=dwd2

Is this what I want to buy, or does someone else know of a better
product and/or vendor? Note there are two different items here - the
DWD2 product, and the cheaper 'core treatment' can that's displayed,
and the prices are very different ($40 vs. $15). Rusty, do you sell
stuff like this? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

:-)

Forward it to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] , they'll deal with the sender (at least that
is what they always tell me).
The important thing is to never click on any link in that email, just delete
it.

I agree a SDL isn't gutless. But I am buying a 300SEL. It has the 103
motor that is in the 124. I think OK Don is right, it probably won't
feel gutless, but it won't be a rocket either.

The 300SEL will be considerably faster 0-60 than a 300SDL (about 8 sec
vs more than 12 for a 300SDL).
